Thread title:
Newer Consoles.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
To be honest, this is probably way too new to go anywhere, but I kinda agree with Carc here. Makes me wonder if he read the sticky. I guess I'll move it.
Stand: Devil's Call in your Heart
lol this was on older consoles.

wouldn't 1p still be faster? so far when playing with several players i've found it much harder to advance because we end up blocking ourselves. maybe if the players are really good and coordinated but a single player run has better odds at being made.
DS Dictator
Haven't got the game yet since I'm in the UK (out here Friday but ordering it from Gameplay usually comes to my door 1 day earlier  :D), but there is one thing I am going to do before producing the run seriously, which is to buy a new TV and try to find a way to record in Component video. The current TV I'm playing on is huge but isn't widescreen, what's even worse is that the image is slightly missing on the left half of the TV (recording playback is uneffected) and I got the offical composite cables to record from.

I'm likely to post a tech related issue on this later on this week/month after playing through this game.

One question, is the level design good enough to speed run through the game easily like the DS one?
Fucking Weeaboo
I don't find it as slick as the DS one, since it relies on gimicks like shaking and tilting the Wiimote.  But for general play?  It's fun.

Here's the Gamespot PDF guide.  If you go for 100%, I'm sure it'll help you out.

That would make it an even more impressive speed run if the runner can do these things smoothly. With proper timing and coordination it could probably make it seem like there isn't even motion based controls. I've played it some, midway through the 3rd world, but I'm liking it so far.
Best Ike In My City!

Sorry, I thought I put this on the casual speedrunning section. oops thanks for fixing it.
Join Club Nintendo today Mac!
Looks like the fastest route through the game is 1-1 -> 1-2 -> 1-3 (Secret Exit) -> Warp to 5 -> 5-1 -> 5-2 OR 5-3 -> 5-Fortress -> 5-4 -> 5-Ghost House (Secret Exit) -> Warp to 8 -> 8-1 -> 8-2 (Secret Exit) -> 8-7 -> 8-Airship -> 8-Castle.

The choice between 5-2 and 5-3 might depend on if the vines on the map cooperate, but at first glance 5-3 seems faster.
Survive
I can't think of anyway two player would be faster other than in 100%, where you can do so many things incorrectly and still get away with it. And if one person dies doing something stupid yet productive, the other can still save him. If two really good people played together, then that would be pretty sweet, and probably not much longer at all. But I still think single player is fastest for low%.

This. Maybe with two players there's places where you can get Star Coins faster as well, but for overall running speed 1-player will be much more efficient. A 4-player TAS would be incredible, but not meant for human hands.
Just as a side note, does rescuing the toads do anything other than putting their houses on the map?
A second player is nothing but helpful. They can just spend the entire level in a bubble on any level they wouldn't be helpful (just have player 2 hit "A" as their first action and never let them out, use the Wii Remote jiggle at the right times to make sure the bubble never drifts in the way). Remembering that you don't actually care about p2's welfare, you could pretty easily just utilize that player for a jumping boost a few times or something (this is probably the fastest way past the first form of Bowser, as a random example). If you want to use several power ups, you could even switch between which characters you are "really" playing as by having characters with different powers take turns spending the whole level in bubbles. In 100%, several players would definitely help a lot; suicidal grabs are the obviously fastest solution for so many star coins, and there are a lot more where using each other as platforms is just faster than the single player intended solutions to get to them (or, in some cases, not faster but requiring of fewer power ups).

Also, in 100%, you can re-run random overworld events with several players by entering a level and having everyone enter a bubble immediately (imagine if the vines in world 5 were cutting you off or something). This eats all of your power ups, but sometimes you have to sacrifice for the greater good, right?

Individual level runs for this game will be semi-hilarious since it will be the best strategy to start every level with a star + whatever powerup is best for that level. At least with a complete file building up those resources should go pretty quickly...
Nintendo has already done most of the speedrunning. Wink The best thing is that you can watch them from the comfort of your own game disc! Just beat the game with all star coins and unlock the videos one by one in Peach's Castle.

they're good starting points for potential runners but those are beatable.

Prove it.

Also, plz take the dumb "Objection!" fad back to GameFAQs, where it belongs.
Stand: Devil's Call in your Heart
beatable by half a sec is still beatable.
Exactly, I saw possible improvements to 1-Tower and 4-2 in there, and I haven't even beaten the game yet.
DS Dictator
I've haven't fully read the thread yet (avoiding getting myself spoiled) and from my experience so far is that, this is going to be much harder to produce a 100% speed run than the DS game.

When I produced a route plan on the DS game I made a list of certain levels on where they gain huge time savers and/or collecting star coins by using certain power ups like:
* Using a Mini Mushroom on 7-2 to save time.
* A Blue Shell collected on 4-A to use on 3-1, 3-3 and 3-Ghost.

Since the game now uses the item system based on SMB 3 and not SMW, a 100% run may require entering a mushroom house and get some bonus items stored on the map screen reserve menu.

* The Fire Flower can defeat enemies without having to avoid the ice blocks and can defeat giant P.plants.
* The Propeller suit is great to gain high heights quickly (like the tower stages).
* The Ice Flower can defeat some enemies that are immune to Fireballs such as those Bone fish like enemies in 4-Castle
* The Mini Shroom isn't as useful as it was in the DS game but it is the only power up to enter small pipes.
It can however stall in mid-air when bouncing on flying enemies such as Paratroopas,
* The Penguin Suit is vital for non-auto scrolling underwater stages for obvious reasons.
* The Starman doesn't last for long and I haven't thought of any good uses for speed running atm other than 6-Tower with the giant drill spike.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I've done a little Speed Running for this game, and the best time for a 100% run, would be somewhere between 4-6 hours, due to the game's difficulty and length.

It takes me between 30-45 minutes to beat a world, depending on how much trouble I have.  And in this game, you don't have those signs to spend Star Coins on the save your game.

About the only real advice I can give, is to stock up on Mushrooms unless you're really good that you absolutely never die.

And I dunno, for a Speed Run of that magnitude, you'd probably have to visit a few Mushroom Houses to stock up on other items.

In my last 100% game of this, I probably died about...20 times, maybe a little more.  So far I've beaten it twice, and it's still a challenge.  I doubt anyone has mastered the game just yet.
I'm thinking of doing an any% of this game. I'm very bad at producing routes so I'm counting on someone that can whip up a route. I've already beat this game since it first came out, so at least i'm going to try to make a route.

The first video I clicked on, World 7-1, could be improved by wall jumping up the inside at 0:05, surely?
OK guys. I downloaded a 100% file of NSMB Wii and this game will probably be quicker or a bit slower than the ds version. This is because in world 1, 1-3, there is a secret exit that leads you to a cannon that shoots you to world 5. From there, there's another cannon that shoots you to world 8. BTW to get to the secret exit in world 1, you need that cap in mario that let's you fly up. I can't really explain it, but it's sorta near the flagpole. In 1-1, you can easily get one of those caps. However make sure you survive till 1-3. So this game should be quick. Smiley
