Re-Edit: 25:43 is the runs official time, I'm going to make sure one more time that everything in the file is well and good and I'll post the video either later tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully soon I'll get the .mp4's but it does take quite awhile on my computer to get HQ done (it's something like a half-hour for the 1 minute video on my quality test).

For anyone with a question 25:43 is the time from the overworld view to pressing the switch after Bowser, from control of Mario to pressing the switch in the Bowser Fight it is 25:31.
25:43 run, starts off a little less then desired, but fixes the ending that cursed my 26:01.

Awesome run, Raiker Z. Well done on that!
Some information about movement speed that might help if anyone still runs this game:

Standard run speed on flat ground is 3.0. With starman it increases to 4.0.

Running down slops and sliding down them usually have the same acceleration, but sliding has a higher max speed.

Very steep slopes, such as the one right after the checkpoint in 1-1 actually slow you down; it's best to jump over them, or run down them, depending on how long they are. In this particular case, you get 2.85 speed while sliding. If there were not goombas on it, it'd be slightly faster to run down, but since there are, it's best to jump from the top.

Sliding with starman always (?) slows you down.

Going down hills causes you to slow down briefly before speeding up. This means it's faster to jump over very short declines than to run down them, such as the ones before the POW block in 1-2.

The adjustable beams, which can be found in 1-2 should always be put down one notch to the right, and slide down them (except with starman; just run). This gets 3.95 speed, or 4.93 with starman.

When going up the clock-wise spinning platforms, jump as soon as you get on them. From 3.0 speed, you'll boost up to 3.23 while jumping (which will be maintained until you land, or hit an enemy). If you don't jump right away, you'll start to slow down, since you're going uphill. When going down, slide for extra speed, and jump off 3-4 frames before reaching the end to keep a speed of 3.23. If you jump too late, your speed will drop right back to 3.

Obviously stay off of the platforms that spin counter-clock-wise at all costs. Sliding down the right side is slightly slower overall than just jumping past it.

If anyone wants to do more testing, speed is stored at offset 15e39ac, and is a (big endian) float.

Also, the save file is updated just before the screen starts to fade to black after mario, luigi, and the toads run off screen, chasing the airship. A segmented run could reset at this point. I'm pretty sure it's faster to reset here for an rta run too, but i can't say for sure. You can't use the home button to reset until much later (which also takes extra time to select reset), and this ends up being about 2 seconds slower, but i'm pretty sure using the wii's reset button would be slightly faster. I can't test though, since dolphin doesn't support resets.
So I am shooting for two different goals here for the game.
Any% Warpless - 1st Goal
100% Complete - 2nd Goal
I'm thinking of trying to do these in a single sitting, however not sure at this time. >.<
I personally have always love Mario games and SS game runs!

Please correct me if I am wrong, but as right now the game only has a any% speed run and nothing else right?
Source/Link: http://speeddemosarchive.com/NewSuperMarioBrosWii.html

I've looked around the website/forums for any more information and it doesn't seem to be much... Just the verification page for the Any% Speed Run.

Right now I am practicing the game here and there when I get a chance.
I hope to submit something before college starts back up!

If time permits, I'll give the any% run a crack myself. =)

Thanks for any feedback/support anyone has,

1-Up!
Vongola, I'm going to merge this thread with the existing NSMB Wii thread. Also I want to express my extreme interest in any% warpless and 100%. You are correct that at this point we only have segmented any%, though a SS any% run is in verification.

There is good info in the thread I'm merging this with, so be sure to look through it for anything that could be helpful.
Thank you Flip!
By the way, nice run there Raiker Z! =)

Vongola, I'd suggest going to my channel on youtube (www.youtube.com/user/IzikiZara) for a basic route for cannonless, I was working on an improvement but I wasn't happy with how some of it was going, and a few other things got in my way.

For 100% look for ewallertv on twitch, he has been working on it a bit, I used to talk to him in speedrunslive, but right now my computer is fighting with me on entering the irc. I think he's broadcasted a few practice streams, racing and talking with him will help you get better at both 100% and any%.

Also thanks rog, I'll try testing out the reset thing soon, if it is faster that'll be an easy save for when I improve the any%. I'm actually waiting on your TAS to get through world 5 to find out what I can do to improve on the levels I feel most comfortable with. Loved the first two stages.

EDIT: Oh yeah side note, saving takes between 2 and 5 seconds using the saves after towers/castles, so if you segment it try to do it as little as possible. I think just removing the saving from my 1:39 cannonless on youtube would save about a minute.

Just to add about ewaller, he has about everything practiced and put together. IIRC, he was going to start his first full game 100% attempt either this or next week, so we'll hope to see what a good estimated time he has in store for us.

That will be a while. I still haven't redone the first level after getting the propeller, and i'm also working on two other tases that take priority over this atm.
Congratulation Raiker Z! I seen the post for the accepted run! Just shaved a few seconds off the WR. ^.^
By the way, I've been in contact with ewallertv! Great guy and it looks like we are both making it off to a great start! Thanks for letting me know about him.
I'm going to be doing a race with ewallertv July 3rd (warpless) for fun, maybe you should join in if possible!? No time just set in just yet, however it would -have- to be after 4pm PDT that day. I'm hoping to use it to help me get a few more viewers to my stream (have a 1k viewer goal in place right now). Let me know what you think and/or if that day would work for you.
Thanks, I just noticed it myself, I'm going to try to get mibbit to work for me in the next day or two, I miss talking on irc, and races. Been busy with some other stuff but I'll try to get in that race Cheesy I need to start playing again!

Hopefully I'll find the problem and we can figure out what times we're on, getting in a few more races here and there before the biggie sounds fun.
Good job RaikerZ on your video getting accepted :).

I finished a 100% run yesterday with a time of 4:31:10.

Screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/KeKKz69psUWK

I recorded the run but my recording program automatically stops after 3 hours unless you change a setting which I was unaware of :). So the recording I have is only up thru 6-1.

I uploaded it to YouTube, but YouTube seems to have squished the dimensions, if anyone has any tips on how to not have that happen it'd be appreciated.

I also have the entire run highlighted on Twitch but the quality is much lower:

Part 1: http://www.twitch.tv/ewallertv/b/322602496
Part 2: http://www.twitch.tv/ewallertv/b/322604405
Part 3: http://www.twitch.tv/ewallertv/b/322604551

I can definitely improve this time a lot, this was just a first attempt at setting a time. If anyone has any tips let me know :).

Ok after watching that I have a route suggestion:

1-1, 1-2, 1-3 (Normal), 1-T, 1-4, 1-6, 1-5, 1-C.
2-1, 2-3, 2-T, 2-4 (Normal), 2-6 (Secret), 2-6 (Normal), 2-5, 2-4 (Secret), 2-Cannon, 1-3 (Secret), 1-Cannon, 2-2, 2-C.
3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-G (Normal), 3-T, 3-4 (Secret), 3-5 (Normal), 3-5 (Secret), 3-4 (Normal), 3-C
4-1, 4-2, 4-T (Secret), 4-Cannon, 3-G (Secret, 3-Cannon, 4-3, 4-T (Normal), 4-4, 4-G (Normal, 4-5, 4-G (Secret) 4-C, 4-Air
5-1, 5-2, 5-T, 5-4, 5-G (Normal), 5-5, 5-C
6-1, 6-3, 6-T, 6-5(Normal), 6-6(Normal), 6-6(Secret), 6-Cannon, 5-3, 5-G(Secret), 5-Cannon, 6-2, 6-4, 6-5(Secret), 6-C, 6-Air
7-1, 7-2, 7-3, 7-T (Secret), 7-6, 7-T (Normal), 7-G (Secret), 7-G (Normal), 7-4, 7-5, 7-C
8-1, 8-2 (Secret), 8-7, 8-2 (Normal), 8-3, 8-T, 8-4, 8-5, 8-6, 8-Air, 8-C
9-1, 9-2, 9-3, 9-4, 9-5, 9-6, 9-7, 9-8

4 Star usages, World 3 Overworld Pass 1, World 3 Overworld Pass 2, WOrld 5 Pre Castle Overworld Monster Pass, World 7 Castle. He can also use a star to bypass the world 7 Overworld monster like he did in that run.

More Item house manipulations.
Props for: 3-T to be used until 3-C, 5-T through 5-4 (If possible), 6-1, and 9-5.
Penguins for: 4-4 (If he loses the one from 4-1), 5-3 or 6-2 if needed, 9-7
Mini mushrooms: 6-6 (two just in case he dies)

Thats just a rough route, like world 5 if he dies he can skip the ghost house or 5-5 if he wants, goal of world 5 is to beat the castle so on the second pass you can finish the levels you missed without vine problems, he wastes a good minute or two in that run trying to figure out the vines.

Tell me what you think.
I worked with RaikerZ on a new route and did a new run last Saturday and was able to cut my time down to 3:57:05. I was also able to record it completely this time, although I still haven't figured out how to get YouTube to not squish it.

I hope to get my time even lower, closer to 3:30, in the future and will try to do attempts every Saturday :).

New route: No red mushroom houses, but if he loses mini on 6-6 he can go to 6-Mushroom to get a mini, maybe penguin and prop for world 9 if he wants too.

1-1, 1-2, 1-3 (N), 1-T, 1-4, 1-6, 1-5, 1-C.
2-1, 2-3, 2-T, 2-4 (N), 2-6 (S), 2-6 (N), 2-5, 2-4 (S), 2-C.
3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-G (S), 3-Cannon, 3-G (N), 3-T, 3-4 (S), 3-5 (N), 3-5 (S), 3-4 (N), 3-C
4-1, 4-2, 4-T (N), 4-4, 4-G (N), 4-G (S), 4-5, 4-C, 4-Air
5-1, 5-2, 5-T, 5-4, 5-G (N), 5-5, 5-C
6-1, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, 6-T, 6-5(N), 6-5(S), 6-C, 6-Air
7-1, 7-2, 7-3, 7-T (S), 7-6, 7-T (N), 7-G (S), 7-G (N), 7-4, 7-5, 7-C
8-1, 8-2 (S), 8-7, 8-2 (N), 8-3, 8-T, 8-4, 8-5, 8-6, 8-Air, 8-C
1-3 (S), 1-Cannon, 2-2, 2-Cannon, 4-3, 4-T (S), 4-Cannon, 6-6 (S), 6-Cannon, 5-3, 5-G (S), 5-Cannon
9-1, 9-2, 9-3, 9-4, 9-5, 9-6, 9-7, 9-8

NOTE: World 5 can drastically change with deaths, this is assuming world 5 is done without deaths. World 9 is placed in order, in a run it is likely not to be done in order due to item manipulations.

EDIT: Ewaller doesn't like 6-5 (N) as mini, so he plans to do it first pass. Changed a routing error from our earlier route, he only needs 3 stars if he doesn't die in 3-3 or 3-G (S) so world 4 is faster to do both ghost houses at once. Added a note. Changed route error, fixed an issue with the route description.

I feel those of us at #nsmbwii have been quiet a bit too long~ so lets get to a few updates for everyone.

First off for rog: RTA runs do NOT gain any time with reset at black, I have it several seconds slower. My wii is fairly old though. Also level intro skips ONLY seem to work on wii with short levels, overworld enemies, cannons, mushroom houses. This does help since I think world 5 cannon and overworld I'm not mashing buttons. I also thank you for your description for 1-1 and 1-2, I can now get 454's extremely consistently in 1-1, and I'm feeling close to getting a 456 in 1-2. I don't think I can get a 455 in 1-1 yet, though sometimes I feel very close.

Me personally: I took a huge blow a while ago, my Wii no longer recognizes New Super Mario Bros. Wii as a game disc, so I have to borrow my sister's Wii to play, and she doesn't share very well. Right now I can only liberate it in early mornings or when she goes on trips. That time is currently being spent with another project that I'll mention soon.

Any%: Currently any attempts at fully improving the any% run I have are on hold though I am now much more consistent at 8-C room one, and 8-2 has a star that we all seem to have missed, so along with a few new jumps 8-2 is now greatly improved. Also just to check, I'm going to test out which is faster 5-2 or 5-3, currently 5-2 is much easier, but 5-3 I feel might be a little faster. I wanted to test this because 5-3 is now a default if you lose your propeller, since it takes 10-20 seconds more to grab the roulette propeller. Backtrack to 1-1 and mushroom houses take about a minute. I feel if we can work out a route in 5-3, it has the potential to beat 5-2 in terms of speed. More on that whenever the next update is.

For Flip:
Part 1: Run starts about 2:52 in the video.

Part 2:

This run has a whole load of issues. But its a start on warpless SS. 4-T I got unlucky, so my 4-4 was slower. 5-C is a troll, and world 6 was a mess, but it only has 2 unintentional deaths, and I don't feel those waste a lot of time overall. I think penguinless start in 4-4 lost more time, and my alternate route in world 6 lost more time. I can't work on this much, and this run was done while my family was out of town, so this is probably all I have for now, but hopefully you enjoy it.

The 100% record is currently with JosephSG at 3:45:15, but him and ewaller are currently still working on it, they just need to find time to actually get runs in, so it takes awhile to work on.

We currently have a new category in the works, its default name is secretless, no one likes 3-4 so we ignore the secret there for an easier name, and pretend it has two normal exits, since that is the only required secret until we find a red block skip. If you have a better name idea throw it at us; the run itself is warpless, but it adds levels in worlds 2 4 6 7 and 8. Worlds 7 and 8 are major route changes. Not sure how SDA will feel about it as a category for runs, but we decided to throw it in for ourselves.

Finally we heard through the grapevine that some people were going to race nsmbw for AGDQ 2013 and doicm and myself have started working on a speedrunning wiki for NSMBW. Since none of us are going to be there *that I know of at least* we'd like all the runners to at least have somewhere to go that hopefully helps. Currently it is a work in progress, but if you want to see it stop by #nsmbwii on the SDA irc server, one of us is typically in there.

We also updated the routes in the KB, we'll re-update them soon enough, but the wiki is taking a lot of our time, at least for doicm and me. Although I do miss the 5 world SS any% that went World 1 2 3 6 and then 8. Cheesy looks like fun, might have to convince others to race it sometime!

EDIT: 5-3 is faster then 5-2, time to learn a new level -.-
Also fixed grammar a bit, I'm terrible with it, I know.
Fixed the video links, so the player pops up.
Also if anyone can get better then a 439 in 5-3 with propeller, end with propeller, and not entering side pipes. Please tell me, I really can't work out a route for the level as much as I'd like. The time I got was sort of a check to see if it came close to 5-2, and it turns out my terrible little run beats 5-2. With some effort I think 5-3 will be significantly faster then 5-2.
Edit history:
Raiker Z: 2012-10-07 05:05:33 pm
Howdy all~ or as it appears to be, hello future me! Nothing like typing out essays of updates for this. Someone else is probably reading them right?

First business is TAS, last I heard it was thrown out because of desync issues, apparently specific points in the game like to desync and Rog wasn't able to stop it, I didn't ask for much more other then it just wasn't going to happen right now.

Next is Any% news: My run got onto the site (yay) but currently I've been looking to improve it, I believe I can get 15-20 seconds overall saved on a good run, I've had a few, but I keep choking on Bowser's Castle. Stage 5-3 has been confirmed to be ~3 seconds faster, if you can get within 8 in-game seconds of a 5-2 ending time the stage is faster. Also we asked Rog to look into the Piranha Plant's behavior, we recently found out that they aren't random at all, so the TAS can manipulate their behavior, now we just need to learn all the triggers so hopefully we can manipulate them in real time.

Any% Warpless: I have a new run out which I'll post at the bottom with a few other videos, it's 1:37:49 in SDA's timing the big problem is I still end up dying unintentionally twice, once in 7-1 and once in world 8's airship. The airship one wasn't a big deal, but 7-1 cost me A LOT of time, I need to practice world 7 a bit more. The rest of the run went fine I'm very excited for when I get a good run down. The question I have (hopefully someone is actually reading this) is: Does everyone want me to reset until I get a good overall run? Or would they be fine with a mediocre run that contains the overworld monster skip in world 1 and world 4 (both can be skipped roughly 45-50 seconds saved)? It is something I'm working on, but I cannot stream and record at the same time, so I plan to stream until I'm confident in the levels and then work on recording for SDA, but the question is would you like a strong in-level run that doesn't rely on overworld monster luck (unless I learn how to manipulate them) or would you prefer a run that is looking for luck and will probably accept a few mistakes, as long as I can get the lucky skips? I'll probably default to ignoring the skips personally, at least for now.

100%: Ewaller took back his 100% record with a time of 3:36:37, currently he is setting out for a sub 3:35 in our timing, I wouldn't begin to know how figure out time for SDA, his goal is sub 3:30, but he might just accept a strong 3:35 because sub 3:30 is looking extremely difficult, we're all hoping he continues, but he plans to move onto NSMBWU when it comes out so who knows where we'll be.

Now onto the video portion of my update:

First my new Warpless run:

I'm extremely happy with worlds 1-6, just need to work on the ending two before I start really getting into it.

Next is ewaller's 100% run:

He had a fairly strong run up until world 9, but check it out.

The playlist for the Wiki Guide on any% is out:
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE5CE218181ACDE91
Thanks to UCPro for letting me borrow a few of his ending levels, I'm thinking about reworking them since the guide goes from regular Mario to Propeller Mario between 8-2 and 8-7, though I think I mention where to retrieve the propeller in one of the descriptions.

A glitch that ewaller found while doing a run, currently it is too difficult to incorporate into the any%, though ewaller still goes for it in 100% I've heard:

The trick is about 45 seconds in, it requires really precise positioning and a frame perfect jump saves about a second.

Another glitch ewaller found while doing a run, he glitched through the floor to death, it may lead to other things though:

Poor ewaller, if not for this random death he'd have a new WR.

Doicm wanted me to post:

If it's been posted before sorry, but doicm asked.

Although he gets us trolling his chat weekly (sometimes multiple times a week) all of us at #nsmbwii are hoping EmptyEye does awesome at AGDQ2013, and extra luck if Mrs MTI joins in~

Well I hope this is enough of an update, free internets for anyone actually reading our updates.
I gets teh internets for FREE!??!?!?!??! Tongue

Regarding the Any% run, I would set a goal based on time, rather than something arbitrary.  If you lose x amount of time, you lose x amount of time.  Whether it comes from not getting monster skips or from dying, doesn't make any difference to the timer.  Ultimately, though, there is no any% run on site, so I would just go for an overall good run, submit, and then go back to improve it.

Also, poor ewaller, that's just total crap. Sad
1-Up!
1) Go with whatever is fastest, instead of a hard and fast rule.
2) Does ewaller want to submit here? We (I) want a 100% run of this game!
Yeah I would submit a 100% run here if I get one that's good enough. My goal initially was sub 3:35, but I've gotten close to that on runs I didn't think were that good, so I was shooting for closer to 3:30, but I might not be able to get that anytime soon. I'm also going to be running New Super Mario Bros U when that comes out (6 weeks), so I have until then to get a good run for submission :). I might have to submit a run in 480i instead of 480p though since my capture card has been messing up lately and cutting out a couple seconds in the middle of my runs.
By the way, asutoro is working on a tas of this. There's a thread in the japanese forum on tasvideos. I don't know how much english he speaks though.
1-Up!
Yeah my concern is that a submission-worthy attempt will be scrapped and then this game will get dropped in November when NSMBU hits.
Quote from Flip:
Yeah my concern is that a submission-worthy attempt will be scrapped and then this game will get dropped in November when NSMBU hits.

Which would probably motivate me to learn this game, since I'm pretty decent at it.  I'm better at the DS NSMB, but a couple years ago I was pretty pro at this game in a non-speedrunning sense, so I'm sure I could pick it up if its omission became glaring. Smiley
I think I'll have something to submit before Nov 18, but even if I don't I'll still play this game and do attempts, just a little less frequently.

My PB was a pretty good run, but I choked in world 9 and lost 6 minutes. I've been doing some runs lately and on the good ones I'm saving a little time on my PB even before world 9. So I think I'll be able to get around 3:30 very soon, and I'll be alright with submitting that time. The only issue right now is that the quality is a little worse since I can't record in 480p anymore, but it's still pretty watchable :).

If anyone wants to watch any of the attempts I stream them on http://www.twitch.tv/ewallertv
