just picked this game up ... i'll probably help out with running this.

EDIT: here's a little video i made of a 456 on world 1-1 ... still room for improvement, but i'm not sure if 457 is possible
I beat the game today (W1->W5->W8) in 45 minutes (Create New File -> Last Switch Hit). I died three times. With more practice I think it can be reduced to 35-40m, but I don't see anything under 30m.

And while I've 100%'ed the game I'm nowhere near "Super Skill" proficiency. Frame-optimal or not, they've set a very high standard.

OK guys. I downloaded a 100% file of NSMB Wii and this game will probably be quicker or a bit slower than the ds version. This is because in world 1, 1-3, there is a secret exit that leads you to a cannon that shoots you to world 5. From there, there's another cannon that shoots you to world 8. BTW to get to the secret exit in world 1, you need that cap in mario that let's you fly up. I can't really explain it, but it's sorta near the flagpole. In 1-1, you can easily get one of those caps. However make sure you survive till 1-3. So this game should be quick. Smiley

Nah, getting Yoshi is probably faster for the 1-3 Secret Exit.
DS Dictator
The run has huge reliance on the Propeller suit.

Spoiler tag added for obvious reasons:

1-1: Power up via Checkpoint flag -> Get Propeller Mushroom
1-2: Take the star to increase running speed and getting past the P.Plants without slowing down.
1-3: Take Yoshi as he can bounce on P.Plants, Dismount Jump off Yoshi to quickly reach up the higher platform for the secret exit.

1-Cannon

5-1: Propeller suit is vital to get pass the platform wheel section.
5-2 (Giant Wigglers): This level seems to be faster than the other course.
5-Tower: Propeller suit is also vital here to get up higher.
5-4: The boat level, I haven't tested if the propeller jumps can skip the entire level (by using the platforms above).
5-Ghost: Secret exit here, pretty short though.

5-Cannon:

8-1: Propeller jumps over the 'lava fountains' is the only way to speed pass through without losing the powerup.
8-2: Take the secret exit here: I have a feeling that the propeller jump can speed up the secret exit route.
8-7: A semi auto scroller, nothing much to worry about.
8-Doomship: The Ice flower obtained during the 2nd half of the course makes Bowser Junior's battle much easier. But the propeller suit is really useful against Bowser's first phase on Bowser's Castle.

8-Bowser Castle: I haven't done much tests but:
* Can regular fireballs defeat Bowser's first phase?
* Can the fireballs destroy those blocks that Giant Bowser can destroy?

The Wii game seems to be shorter than the DS game by 13 stages to 19. The 100% will be longer than the DS version because the levels are much longer.

I'll test the bowser thing.
EDIT: It can. However, I think it would be much slower because it looks like if Bowser has more HP than the DS version. He jumps at one point so we should be able to press the switch.
EDIT2: Did some more testing and bowser first phase can be defeated in about 10 seconds IIRC. I'll post a vid soon.

i'm going to work on putting a video together of the fastest way to do world 1 using the route Greenalink posted.  Should have something by the end of the week.

EDIT: ok guys, here's World 1-1 (ending with propeller mario) and 1-2 ... i believe the fastest possible time for these levels are 453 and 455 respectively.  I'm gonna work on 1-3 tomorrow, so stay tuned ...

World 1-1

World 1-2
This might only be a very minor improvement, but wouldn't it be faster to tilt the movable platforms down in 1-2?

i haven't tried that yet, but it definitely might help.  I'll play around with that more later today.

I am currently messing around 8-Doomship with the propeller suit, it has some good uses in some of the areas. I'll post a video for you viewers to watch. It will show a reliable strat to defeat Bowser Junior without taking damage and minimalising the loss of time due to the fire traps.

EDIT:
The first part was great, the second half has some obvious places to improve but you'll get the idea when trying it out.

World 1-3

... i'm pretty sure this is the fastest possible time.
I'm not saying I could do it better, but I doubt that 1-3 is the "fastest possible time."  There's a stumble at :31 jumping towards the yellow pipe, as well as at :36 when propellering to that top platform.  I don't have any suggestions for the :36 part, but at :31, possibly not hitting such a hard right angle may help get over the pipe more smoothly.  Looking fun so far though!

i haven't been able to find a "smooth" way to get past the part at :31 ... it hardly slows you down at all.  Actually, I think it's necessary to be slowed down by hitting that pipe because otherwise you'd hit the Piranha Plant (or you would have to slow yourself down anyways to avoid hitting the Piranha Plant).

at :36 - i don't know what improvements are possible ... i executed that as well as it can be done.  Unless there's a better way to do it.

Overall, there may be possible improvements for this level, but when i say "fastest time possible" i'm talking about in terms of the game clock ... with my final time of 449.  I barely enter the pipe with 456 on the clock, which means there would have to be more than a half second worth of improvements in order to get 457 ... i don't see how that's even close to being possible.

EDIT: i just worked on 5-1 a little bit, and it has been pretty frustrating ... definitely going to be a very tough level if someone decides to go the optimal route in an actual speedrun.  There are a few spots where timing has to be PERFECT ... i will hopefully have a vid of it soon.

EDIT 2: wow, 5-1 was a pain to figure out.  After about an hour and a half i finally nailed down what should be the optimal route.  Once i started recording, it took me 30 attempts to get what you see here ... obviously with more practice this will get easier, but i have a feeling that this level will cause a lot of restarts when we finally get to recording a full game run.

World 5-1
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I did attempted speedrunning 1-1 and 1-2 with all the star coins.  I got 435 for 1-1 and 425 for 1-2.  For the first level I got the 3rd coin before the second because you can't get into the pipe before 453 anyways.  For the second level, in the room with the 2nd coin I would hit the block that opened the p-box and then spin-jump up to the star coin, then I would twirl onto the p-box.  I used the star so I wouldn't lose momentum going past the piranha plants on the way to the 3rd coin.  After getting the 3rd coin I had to spin-jump past the piranha plant to avoid being hit.  I think 1-2 seconds for each level could be shaved off with my routes.
DS Dictator
Speaking of an 100% run I think it's wise to have the first set of levels to be based on the Warped run. Then after clearing 8-Bowser you gain the ability to save at anytime. If I am going to make one I will promise that I won't save after each level (otherwise it would be a 60+ segmented run). The save would be used before a certain luck based event (Red Mushroom House items/Skipping enemy encounters) or a tough strat like using a propeller suit on 7-Tower or the Mini Mushroom on 6-6 (the dark cave level with a small boat).

Pros:
* Possibly skip the cutscenes of Bowser Junior taunting Mario as he moves on to another world.
* Skips a detour on World 8 (you clear the shortcut route before finishing the game).
* Better optimisation on skill and luck.

Cons:
* An unusual route for an Mario related 100% run (although on SM Galaxy, you need to clear the game once to unlock 15 purple comets). For this game, you need to clear the game once to unlock World 9.

Seeing how the 100% run would work like Greenalink's NSMB DS run, that would mean you would have to get 5 stars on your profile to be able to count your run 100%...  I got this off of IGN.com from the NSMB Wii secrets...  http://guides.ign.com/guides/14354229/page_4.html

Star 1 - Beat the game (you can use Warp Cannons)
Star 2 - Collect all 24 Star Coins in World 9
Star 3 - Beat every "normal" level in the game,i.e., you don't need to find Secret Goals.
Star 4 - Collect all 207 Star Coins in the first 8 Worlds
Star 5 - Beat every level, find every secret goal and use all of the Warp Cannons.

So pretty much (as expected), it is beat all the stages, get all the star coins, find all secret goals AND use all the warp cannons (or work your way to getting star 5)...  69 stages in all plus how many stages that would need to be revisited to get to the secret houses, and warp cannons (and said use of the cannons)...

Also apparently, IGN had figured out the mushroom house patterns... it isn't much, but besides possible patterns, they have at least figured this much...

!!! --- !!! --- !!! ---
!!! !!! !!! !!! !!! !!!
--- !!! --- !!! --- !!!

!!!= possible Bowser or Bowser JR spot...
---= safe area...

This can be used to see if you can find the propeller suit a bit easier/faster if needed to...
Waiting hurts my soul...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't swinging on the vine at the end speed you up? It looked like coming at it with downward momentum is faster than just running. Swimming looks painfully slow in that run, but I think you're right about it being fastest.

I mentioned in my video description that swinging on the vine at the end might be faster ... i think it is.  I haven't tested it yet, but it should save at least a fraction of a second.

I'm not sure, but getting a Starman at 0:18 should shave off a few seconds. Running with star power is faster than normal, and you don't have to worry about avoiding enemies.

When i first started practicing this level, i thought about getting that star ... but figured it wouldn't be worth it because of how long it would take to get.  The more i think about it though, it might be worth checking out.  I'll work on it a little later tonight and share the results ...
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Well based on Greenalink's planned route I did 1-3 getting the first 2 star coins with the secret finish (saving the 3rd for the regular route later).  I got a time of 440 though I think a perfect run could reach 442 or 443.  You can reach the first star coin without losing momentum if you triple jump into it.  The second coin slows me down a bit waiting for the piranha plant to recede and I have to spin jump to get the second coin inside there (anyone know how to reach it without losing so much time?).  You certainly are brave if you plan on doing a 100% run that isn't segmented for every level!
*NEW* World 5-1

... well, i gotta hand it to you Hb2, getting that star improved the run by almost 4 seconds.  Looks like it'll be important to get every star possible that we come across because mario's running speed just goes bananas with it (not to mention the invincibility).  Even if it takes an extra 4-5 seconds to get a star, it might still be worth it.

I also jumped on/off the vine at the very end of the level.  It looks like its a little bit faster than just straight running ... but only by a small amount.  I left my old 5-1 run up for you guys to compare if you want.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Your level runs are impressive UC.  It will be interesting to see when a star would be used for a 100% run because it might be difficult outweighing the pros and cons of going to an item shop for them.
World 1-1 with all star coins in 441 (almost 442)
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Haha I was so happy to improve my time to 440 but seems like you got it beat good job.
Here's a faster World 1-1 ... i almost got 454, but a high 453 will be good enough for a speedrun

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
