NSMBW any% segment 4

read the video description for details.  my total time so far including load times is about 12:55.
Looks awesome, only World 8 to go.
General Kong - Bullets and Bananas
That was hot.  World 5-4 is always impressive.  How many attempts did you put in before getting this?  And were you going for the gold, or breaking up world 8 with the manual save?  Just wondering because the world 8 levels can be such a hassle.

about 300 attempts ... which actually isn't a lot considering its a short segment.  I'm still not sure if im going to split up world 8 or not.  The whole place is difficult, which leads me to think i will split it up ... but using a quick save is going to be a major pain to reset failed attempts after.
General Kong - Bullets and Bananas
You probably already thought of it, but you could copy your file at world 8-1 to two files.  Then you have a back-up in case you want to "undo" the quick save.

the problem with quick saving is that once you open that file again, you lose that save.  so when i go to the next segment attempt and mess up, i'll be all the way back to 8-1.  And you can't copy a quick saved file because it removes the quick save.  The only way to get a quick save to work is to copy the game data to an SD card, so that when you mess up a segment attempt you can copy the game data from the SD card back onto the Wii HD.  And THAT is going to be a pain in the ass, because it will take 1 whole minute (maybe more) to reset the game data between attempts.  It'll be hard to get in any kind of speedrunning rhythm because of that.

Yet another awesome segment.  As far as redoing it, I would think that the more "casual" fan of speedrunning (such as myself) wouldn't notice a half second of improvements in this segment (or any other, for that matter).  300 attempts sounds like an outrageous amount to me, but then again, I'm not a speedrunner.  I mainly think it's awesome watching someone demolish a game like this one with style.  I look forward to the rest of the run.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I say keep that segment.  It's really well done, and three tenths of a second lost on 5-4 really isn't anything to lose any sleep over.

I can hardly wait for the final two segments.
I've been practicing 8-2 a lot and i can get 417 about 1 in 2 tries now.  I have decided not to split up world 8, so my next segment will go from 8-1 all the way through the doom ship.  It's going to be tough, but i think using a quick save will ruin the integrity of this segmented run.

I have to tell you all that i am getting really excited about doing SS attempts of this run.  I'm going to be getting a webcam shortly and i think i'll set up a Ustream account so i can do live recordings of my SS attempts.  But i need to see if anyone would be interested in watching me do live SS attempts of this run.  So let me know guys, any interest??
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I think it would be fun to watch.  Scary game to try to SS lol.

My favorite level of the run is going to be 8-7.  My favorite level! >:3
Yes, Inexistence is a word.
Good luck dude, the run's really great so far! I'd definitely watch any streams you do of runs Smiley
i have decided to actually split up world 8 because the fight at the end of 8-doomship is soooooooo random in order to get the fastest time possible.  So 8-1 and 8-2 will be a segment ... and 8-7 and 8-doomship will be another segment.  I'll have 8-1 and 8-2 done this weekend, and possibly 8-7 and 8-doomship as well.  I'm thinking this run has a good chance of being completed by the end of this month, and then soon after i'll be attempting SS runs (hopefully on live stream), which i am very excited to start Wink
General Kong - Bullets and Bananas
Sounds like a plan.  I'm right here on the edge of my seat.  Grin

Can't wait.  Anticipation.....
sexy, sexy, sexy ... that's all i got to say about this one

What a nice surprise for those of us staying up too late.  Tongue

Sexy doesn't do it justice.  That was smoking hot, like raining-lava-rock smoking.  And sneaking under that extra spike ball for the bonus 8-2 exit.
Nice!

Bravo indeed UCpro!
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I'm surprised you're risking a Quick Save.  There are still plenty of Mistakes you can make here in just 8-7 alone, and also in the Airship Level.

If you mess it up, you'll have to do 8-1 and 8-2 over again just to make another quick save to load from.

Very nice segment, though. :3
Exoray
As explained on the previous page, copying the save file to an SD card will preserve the quicksave so he won't need to redo the first two levels.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Oh.  I guess I missed that discussion.  I haven't been paying much attention to the forums the last few days.
i will only accept a 440 on 8-7 and a 366 on 8-doomship for my next segment ... could take quite a while to get this, since 366 doesn't come very often.

EDIT: actually, i may only accept a 367 on 8-doomship ... need to figure out the manipulation at the end fight (seems too random for me right now)

I wonder is this even allowed in SDA? If you mean submit your run?

This seems cheat IMO.  Roll Eyes

Sounds like you haven't seen the segmented runs on Zelda Majora's Mask.
Those runs copy the other file that used a temporary quick save to prevent retrying the same segment(s).

The real question is whether your run will be rejected for not abusing Quick Save every time you can.
DS Dictator
Until you watch the previous segments 0% chance that the run will be rejected.

using the quick save isn't really abusive because it costs a good second and a half to use it.  If i had decided to do 8-1 through 8-doomship all in one segment i would easily have had more than 3 seconds of possible improvements on a successful attempt ... so i decided it was worth it to use the quick save to split that up and just have 2 perfect segments.

an update on my progress ... hopefully i'll be able to work on the next segment this weekend.  I want to save the game data to my computer first before moving on, just in case i accidentally erase it when copying it to the wii HD in between each attempt.
