-First off no this isn't the right thread but i'll answer your questions anyway. Next time find a thread for sma2. -I'm not sure if gba timing differs but the times for the most part should be the same as the snes version. There are a few exceptions where the levels change like in sw2, I believe you have to go out of the way to get to the key. -In the snes version you hold y then press x to spin but I believe there isn't an X button equivalent so it isn't possible. The method you suggested is probably the best. -It would be better to get hit once. The only reason we are small is because getting a powerup pauses the game so it would waste time.
As for Lucid's run: Good Job! It is much more appealing to me than andrewg's run. (slightly more entertaining within the levels) There are still many improvements. I haven't tried in a couple weeks because I got out of the running mood but I came up with a time equal to andrewg's time like a week or two after his got posted. The video quality was total shit though(you can't even see what is happening) I haven't felt like seeing if it was the vcr or tape's fault so I just haven't done any runs. I don't know next time i'll go for the record again but I hope to get around to it sooner or later.

EDIT: Tiki answered while I was typing this.
Heh. When I rewatched my own speedrun I thought it was not very entertaining. It's funny because depending on my mood the particular attempts of speedruns will differ slightly. I guess that smw run was not one of my bests
If and when I attempt to beat Lucid's run I think I'll probably incorperate a few tricks.
Congrats Lucid. I didn't think I'd be beaten so quickly with this run, just shows Lucid's skills at this game
You suprised me with a few of your routes you took instead of flying. Did you do that because of consistancy of times? I think that's a very interesting tactic.
Your run overall was very solid. You were so unlucky during SW2! You must have been so mad.
I think I'll end up going back to this game sometime in the next few months. You going to keep competing if I beat it back?

Congrats on a great run.
Thank you for the comments!
I used spin-flying in DP1 for consistency reasons. I wanted to focus on latter stages in this run and didn't want to deal with the randomness of fast flying. Sometimes, I'd screw up and the run would end. Other times, I'd fly perfectly, but still wind up with a 359 due to the random nature of flying.
I'm convinced that spin-flying is the way to go for SW4, though. I've been using that route for years, and I get a 271 every single time.
And yes, that SW2 ending was annoying, especially looking back at it now. I met or exceeded my goal times for every single stage except for that one, one of the easiest stages in the game.
My "ultimate run" would basically be the run currently published, without that screwup in SW2. So, if anyone wants to beat the record, practice Donut Secret House, and start going for 341s.
I like your new methods here. Star worlds 4 way was pretty much same what i use my personal speedruns. You way was still bit faster. It looks like much easier than that old WR way.
There is only one single mistake. I see Star world 2 took 1-2 seconds too much. But this not that bad.
quick question ... i've been gaining more interest in this game and was wondering, is there any difference between the SNES and Wii VC versions of this game? I have both, but just wondered if anyone knew what the better version is to do a minimalist run of this game. Thanks
I think the VC is a faithful port of the SNES version. Only the GBA version is different with slight level design tweaks in Ghost houses and Castle based levels (they added Yoshi Coins in those courses too) and Luigi is also playable but with different stats (Slow runner but has higher jumps).
I don't think there's a different between the original and the Wii VC, but I can't be 100% sure on that. I think it should be the same anyhow.
I like how I've been playing a ton of SMW lately, but am still too lazy to even attempt to get the run back myself. Good luck on this. You did a very nice Home Alone run and I'm sure you could beat the current run on SDA... maybe unless I beat you to the punch I've honestly been considering doing the low% run and then trying the 11-exit afterwards.
OK, if there's no noticable differences i guess i could play both versions and see which one i feel more comfortable with.
Believe me though, i'm not going to be in any position to start any recorded attempts for a long while. I figure this might be a good game to practice about 15-20 minutes a day for a couple months and then start thinking about putting all together. We'll see ... first i just want to play around and see what kind of precision i can manage with SMW. Seems like there's a little room for improvement on the current 10:59 ... but right now i'm not sure how much room for improvement there is realistically (maybe like 5-6 seconds?)
well, i've been playing this for a couple hours now and i actually recorded a World 1 run ... it's pretty much a standard run, with the exception that the Iggy fight was a little sloppy (i haven't worked too much on Castle 1). It was done on the Wii VC and matching it up with current records done on the SNES, it's basically exactly the same.
I'm really struggling with DS1 and SW1 ... i think with more practice i can get DS1 down, but i have no clue about how to do that glitch in SW1 (i've only been able to do it a couple times). Does anyone have any special way that you're getting through those rotating blocks? Are there certain buttons you press at specific times while doing that glitch?

Basically... it's hit the first block, hit the second block under it, and then RIGHT when you hit the third block hold Y, B, and hold right. and there you have the Smashola Glitch. That's the way I do it anyhow.
I almost gave up on this, because i had practiced this for hours with no success, and then all of a sudden it just started to click. I found out that holding Right and Up (or Left and Up) as well as A when you hit the third block works very well for me. I can get 290 about 1/4 of the time now, but i also have many attempts where i fall too far on the 2nd smashola glitch because i go to far to the left. I need to figure out a way to consistently stop that from happening.
sorry for the double post, but i wanted to mention that i will be working on improving this run. I have gotten to the point where i can do all of the tricks in the run, and some of them quite consistently.
I put a chart together and have determined that a perfect run for me would be a 10:54 ... my goal will be to get a 10:56. I haven't practiced DSH, FD, or Bowser yet, but i know i can match the times set in the current record run. All the other levels i have down ... including DS1 which i can get 256 basically every time, and SW1 which i can get 290 about 1 in 2 times. The key to a great run will be getting fast flying for DP1 and SW4 ... which is partially luck based.
I won't be doing recorded attempts for at least a month or two, but i just wanted to mention that i will be working on this, and I WILL GET 10:56 by the end of this year ... mark my words.
EDIT: does anyone else have a problem with running past doors? Too many times do i run past a door (unintentionally) because i guess i'm not pressing UP at the right time. Does anyone else have this problem too ... or am i just stupid? Honestly, it one of those things that shouldn't be a problem, but maybe 1 in 3 times i miss time pressing UP and run past a door. Any suggestions?
Yeah, I always run by doors too. Idk how to avoid that really. Also, If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I should work on this run again sometime soon. I mean, I have been playing it, but I haven't really been working on a run or anything.
For DP1, I still want to use the insane method. (What the TAS does)... I think I could pull it off with practice. When I get around to trying to speedrun this again, I'm going to go all out. 8)
this is what i'm aiming for when i start recording ...
YI2 - 360 (100% of the time i get this) YI3 - 259 (95%) YI4 - 275 (95%) C1 - 240 (75% - i go through the first door at a high 280) DP1 - 262 (25% - with fast flying 262 isn't hard, but you don't get it a lot. i'm using the non-TAS cape method) DS1 - 256 (75% - i've gotten VERY consistent at this level ... have gotten 257 a few times) DSH - 338 (still needs more practice, but 338 should be a pretty consistent time) SW1 - 290 (50%) SW2 - 260 (80%) SW3 - 192 (80% - i would probably accept a high 191 on this) SW4 - 272 (25% - need fast flying to get this high 272. might accept 271 depending on how the rest of the run went) FD - 360 (i haven't worked on this a lot yet, but 360 should be pretty easy to get with more practice) Bowser - i'm just shooting for a time similar to the current record time (basically a flawless fight)
I would only submit a run where i get all these times in a single run, which is a total of 6 marios faster than Lucid Faia's record ... approx 3.5 seconds. Right now i'm not going to put in the TAS cape method for DP1 (which is 1 mario faster), but i could change my mind on this before i start recording in a month or so. I also might shoot for a 257 on DS1 when i start recording, but i will accept a 256 in a real run. Based on the percentages i have right now, i should get a 10:56 within 400 recorded attempts ... but it could come much sooner than that.
I shouldn't have any questions andrewg ... i mostly just need more practice. But if anything comes up, i'll let you know
Looking at DSH, I am very curious to see if can get something like 341-342 or something. I'm going to be trying a few things..
I really hate the luck you need for this run. This kind of thing annoys me so much. At least you don't need as much luck as with SMB3, but it's still annoying. Sometime soon I'll probably try this again. I feel like I could get 10:53-10:54 with a few new strategies in a few levels MAYBE. I'll test some more things out later.
On basically all of your times I THINK it's possible to get 1 game unit ahead on almost all of them. I mean, it's barely any difference on most though.
the times i listed are basically what i'm calling the cutoff point. Anything lower than those times shouldn't be acceptable for the next submitted run. Of course, i've only really been working on this game for a week, so with more practice and comfort, i'll probably be adding in more risky tricks by the time i start recording. Riskier moves for me would be the TAS cape method in DP1, swimming up to the ?-block with the red shell in DS1, and jumping through the ghost circle in DSH ... i haven't tried jumping off the P-switch in C1 to get further distance over the lava pit, but that might be too hard. Put in too many of these riskier tricks and the run might be too impossible.
andrewg, if you do any work on this run let me know what progress you make. i'm interested to see if you'd be shooting for different times than what i'm looking at.
EDIT: I changed my target time for DSH to 338 ... don't know why i originally put 339 ... i'm basically doing this level exactly like Lucid Faia. Practiced it some more, and i got 338 three times ... with more practice 338 should be pretty easy to get consistently. Only FD and Bowser left to practice ... everything else is going very well.
You're going to find that when you start recording, those percentages of success will be meaningless. There's a lot of pressure in SS running, and SMW is a deceptively tough game to speedrun. andrewg can attest to that. Good luck!
yeah, it may take quite some time to get the quality run i'm looking for. Thankfully i'm not someone that gets really nervous when i push record ... it'll be interesting though to see how recording will actually go. I've actually done an unrecorded mock run that would have been about 11:05 ... and that was with a bad FD run and cautious bowser fight (these are the only parts i haven't really practiced).
Alright, so basically I think I'm going to try and take this back. I've been kinda lazy on this one, but I'm going to aim for 10:56. I feel like I'm not very good at this game, I'll be practicing this. This along with the magfest speedruns for a while.
i've been working on this off and on ... i am also aiming for 10:56 when i finally get to recording. My best is 11:01 right now, but that's with a horrible FD time cause that's the only part i haven't really practiced much. I've actually gotten quite consistent with the fast flying on DP1 and SW4

10.56 seems MAX time on console. When i watched 10.59 run only part where you can redo that run was Starworld 2 and this one cost only 2 seconds. Otherwise this run was almost perfect as SMB run. Good luck with this. I surely wanted see run which obsolted current WR by 3 seconds.
Will a 10:57 suffice, Master-88? A couple of weeks ago, a Japanese player did an emulated live stream on niconico douga, and reached 10:57. The videos are finally online now. http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm9040773 The original video http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm9045850 Side-by-side view of Adam Sweeney's run and the Japanese run. Hopefully he'll grab a console and do a formal take.
