I just got a 291 on SW1!!!!! Take that thegreginator!  Now I have beaten one of the times by 6 marios Grin
The problem is that I got this time doing a very difficult move that I only did on accident. On the 2nd set I floated to the 4th block from the wall and did the glitch perfectly to the key.  You only need to do it from the 3rd but I went to the 4th.  I think the 3rd is actually faster so it might have just been a coincidence. It was probably my beginning that made the difference.  My new method is to start the glitch two blocks left of the TAS method.  This lets me go faster because I don't have to hover to reach the block.  I can just jump into the wall and I fall straight onto the block. Picture-http://img109.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=32468_sw1_320lo.JPG
Blue is my new way and red is my old way.

I will keep practicing to see what I actually need to do to get a 291.

Nice work on that 291 skamastaG.  It's funny how one of the shortest levels in the run can be a 6 "mario" improvement from Scott Kessler's time and thus the most improved level in our run.  Oppositely, Donut Ghost House is the longest level in the run and I only pulled off a 5 "mario" improvement there with a 341 (see previous page).  Wink

We made a table of all of our best times compared to sdkess to give an estimate of our time.

(level -- our best -- SK's time -- difference in marios)

Yoshi’s Island 2 -- 260 -- 260 -- 0
Yoshi’s Island 3 -- 259 -- 258 -- +1
Yoshi’s Island 4 -- 275 -- 275 -- 0
Castle #1 -- 241 -- 240 -- +1
Donut Plains 1 -- 362 -- 360 -- +2
Donut Secret 1 -- 258 -- 255 -- +3
Donut Secret House -- 341 -- 336 -- +5
Star World 1 -- 291 -- 285 -- +6
Star World 2 -- 260 -- 259 -- +1
Star World 3 -- 192 -- 191 -- +1
Star World 4 -- 272 -- 270 -- +2
Front Door -- 358 -- 355 -- +3
Bowser Fight -- 1:58 -- 2:01 -- +3 sec

Our perfect final time will be ~10.36 by SDA or ~10.50 by TG but I still don't know if it will be accepted.

The time we will really get will be a little bit different than this estimate.  This was purely mathematical and might be inaccurate.  We added up all of the timeunits(25) and multiplied by .6825 to get 17.0625.  Then we added 3 seconds for bowser to get an improvement of ~20 seconds.  We don't save a full .6825 everytime we get a better timeunit.  Like Fabian said it could be just .1 so this table could be a bit off.  This will probably just affect the time by 1-2 seconds at most and we will still have a great improvement.

PAL versio Difference

My own best time on PAL is 12.10 (if i use sda time rules my time is 12.11). It is really good, but not perfect. This looks pretty much same as Scott old WR records 11.09.

-Game clock is slower With PAL versio
Yoshis island 2 my best time left is 363, NTCA best is 360

Iggy Castle auto scroll part is more faster Ntca than PAL
280 before auto sroll and 236 before Iggy fight.

I think enemys moves faster NTCA than PAL. Donut secret house is maybe more faster to beat NTCA than PAL because there is Two boo rings.  My best time left is 322. WR is about 33x

i think Ntca is minutes faster than PAL, i think Possible time PAl is 11.56 (Use Scott route)
Yeah, I said it.

Sounds great, but you'll need a bit of luck to have a perfect run like that. I'm looking forward to it.

By the way, Mario is a character, not a unit of measurement. Wink

Hi! I'm andrewg!
I got to get out my SMW and see something about the game units. I didn't realize that in SMW the game units are so slow. If I had known that, I probably would have tried to beat this record a long tiem ago. I just figured they were the same speed as smb1.

I probably wont try to beat this record for a long time though.

I was thinking it would be impossilbe for the record to be improved by more than 10 seconds... because i thought the game units were faster. 25 game units in smb1 = about 10 seconds.... so now i realize how you are able to save so much time.
I just did a run through of this game to show my brothers and sisters and I didn't do too bad.  I would have beaten our personal best if I didn't screw up horribly on bowser.  Most of the levels were pretty bad but I didn't mess up enough to ruin the time.  The best part of the run was the 258 on DS1!!!!!  I wasn't too sure if I could get that time consistently or even if I could get that time at all but I now know that I can get a 258 on DS1!!  The whole level has to be absolutely perfect to get a 258 but I am pretty sure I can get it in a run.

Thats good to hear skamastaG.  I'm also getting better at getting a 341 on DSH (jumping through the circle is a pain).  Who knows, a 341 may be a possiblilty in a run.  The downside is if I mess up even a little, I end up with a 339 because of the timing of getting into the doors.  This 339 is almost the same as the 341 in realtime, but still, a 341 would look nice.

Also on DSH, when I was practicing today, I accidentally JUMPED (not flew) through the stairs with a cape!  I thought this was supposed to be impossible (VIPer7 switches to the fireflower in order to jump through the stairs in his 96 run).  I'm pretty sure I had p-run and did a spin jump flight, but I dont remember exactly.  I know it was on the second set of stairs, right before the door, but this shouldnt matter.  I will do more testing on this.  If I can find a way to semi-consistently jump through the stairs with a cape, my time for this level may improve even further!
Get your own Liscense to Kill.
I'm currently working on a perfect FD. Is going through 2 instead of 1 worth the 2-3 marios wasted by running there? That is if both are done perfectly. I'm hoping to run all possiblities that seem to have potential speedrun quality. Looking at the map, (doors) 3 and 6 are not worth it. 3 is too long and 6 is underwater anyway. I'm gonna try the 6 remaining doors and see which ones seem fastest.

I'm also noting the fact that it takes 2-3 marios to run from door 1 to 2, 3 to 4, etc. This means doors 5 & 8 are 6-9 marios apart Angry
Doors 2 and 5 are the fastest possible combination.  Are you using a cape for this level?  If so, in door 5 you run as far as you can and then just take the hit and become small.  Ideally you would have a cape in your reserve box that you can grab right there so you can use it for the dark room.  The best splits (times for entering each door) are as follows: enter door 2=395, exit room 2=387, enter door 5=385, exit room 5=374, exit dark room=358.  All of these splits are the best possible tool-assisted times, but are also possible by a human.  The one exception is exiting the dark room, tool-assisted can get 359, but this is using the hopping glitch and pretty much isnt possible on console.  Hope this helps.

I have been working on Donut Plains 1 a lot latey and I think I've got it down.  The hardest part about this level is grabbing the cape the TAS way, and I'm pretty consistent about that, I'd say I get it about 2/3 of the time.  If I can get the cape well, the rest of the level is pretty easy and straight forward.  To get a 362, you dont need to have "perfect" fast flying, just "decent" fast flying.  With the old method, you needed absolutely perfect fast flying, which means that the new method is both easier and faster (and a lot more entertaining ;)).  If you get near perfect fast flying with the new method, the timer is really close to a 363.  I made a video of this level to show my route (.smv).

Donut Plains 1 - 362

I used an emulator to make this video for two reasons.  First, having a savestate just before entering the level is helpful so if you get hit at the beginning you dont have to do it small and then die if you get hit again.  Second, making a video using an emulator is much easier and has much better quality.  I didnt record an AVI because they take forever to upload, so it's just .smv.  As always, there was no slowdown, frame advance, or save states (except for the one before entering the level) used.

About the movie:
--I started out with a fireflower because thats what you'd have in the context of a run (get it in Iggy's Castle).
--When I touch ground at the end, I'm pretty sure doing a kamikaze is faster then just stopping your flight, although I can get 362 with both methods.
--Boucing off the koopas is not easy and requires pretty precise timing and positioning.  I bounce off 5 koopas in this movie (including the one I take the cape from), and I usually bounce off 6.  The one I missed is the one at the end right after the 2 blue pipes, one facing up and one facing down.  It is possible to bounce off the high flying one at the beginning (right after the first dragon coin, at a time of 393 in the level), but I fly over him because bouncing off him puts me in a bad position for getting the next one.
--My 362 was only FOUR FRAMES AWAY from a 363.  So close!  I dont think a 363 is possible though.

Sorry for the triple post, but I’ve decided to go through and make videos of all my levels for the run so viewers can get a taste of what the run will look like.  The videos posted here will be pretty much exactly the same as how they will be done in the run, all tricks and stunts for entertainment included.  “My levels” are the ones I will be doing in the run, and they are: Donut Plains 1, Donut Secret House, Star World 2, Star World 3, Star World 4, Back Door (just the dark room), and the Bowser fight.  The videos for Donut Plains 1 and Donut Secret House are already up.

In no particular order, I decided to make the video for Star World 3, finishing at a time of 192.  This was a very easy level to do, so I experimented with a number of different formats.  I have a .smv, a non-compressed AVI hosted on FileFront, and a compressed AVI (using XviD) hosted on YouTube, in that order.  They were all made on an emulator, without savestates, slowdown, frame advance, etc.  I wouldn’t have made a compressed version, but the non-compressed one was too big for YouTube.  Here they are:

Star World 3 – 192 (.smv)

Star World 3 – 192 (AVI on FileFront)

Star World 3 – 192 (compressed AVI on YouTube)

The YouTube link has all my SMW movies to date, check them out.  The three videos above are all different runs.  As it happens, the order the videos are listed in is the order from best to worst in terms of both quality and time.  The .smv is 17 frames away from a 193 (8 frames faster than Alexis Neuhaus :)), the FileFront AVI is about 26 frames away from a 193, and the YouTube compressed AVI is about 38 frames away from a 193.  For the AVIs I say “about” because I don’t think the frame step on my media player is entirely accurate.  Not a whole lot to say about this level, but I think my method of spinjump flying is pretty cool. Wink  It is faster than just grabbing the key as fast as possible and jumping to the keyhole, although I can get a 192 doing this as well.
I have two pieces of good news.

1.  I get back home tomorow morning
2.  I just got a new controller.  It works great.  None of the controls stick like they did on the controller I was using before.

The biggest conflict I am having right now is over what I am going to do in Yoshi's Island 2.  I have 4 beginnings and 3 endings to choose from.  I would make pictures of all of them but the mouse I have here is horrible.  Maybe I can make videos of them at thegreginator's house when I get back and we can put them up here to see what variations you all think are the coolest.
Yeah skamastaG you should make some vids over here at my house.  I cant wait to see all the crazy tricks you've come up with for this level.

As far as updates, I managed to get a 343 on Donut Ghost House.  The one catch is that it was without the cape and I jumped through the stairs.  Since this only save two "marios" from my caped time, its not worth the ~2 sec that it would take to switch to the fireflower at the beginning of the level and back to the cape at the end.  It s still cool to know I can beat one of Scott Kessler's times by 7 marios though. Wink

Hi everybody, I just wanted to tell you my tool assisted 96 exit speedrun is done. I figured some people here would be interested but doesn't check tasvideos regularly, so here it is, http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4205, I hope you enjoy it.
Everyone, you have to check out Fabian's run.  It is the sickest thing you will ever see.  If you only watch one TAS, watch this one.

skamastaG and I have been messing around with Yoshis Island 2 a lot lately.  This is normally a boring and easy level, but the fact that it is easy means there is lots of room for messing around.  We have come up with many different ways to beat this level pulling of all sorts of crazy tricks.  Some of the stunts that skamastaG pulls look really cool.

Since we have many different options of how to complete the level, we figured we would let the viewers decide which trick they think is coolest and would like to see in a run!  As of now, we have only made videos of the seven possible endings we have come up with.  Once everyone votes on the endings, we will put up videos of the possible beginnings.  So everyone, start casting your votes for the endings!  We want to know what you think looks coolest.  All seven endings are in a playlist on YouTube. Here is the link to it.

Yes these videos were played on an emulator, but at 100% speed with no frame advance or rerecords. There is one save state used at the beginning.  If the video seems to "warp" to a different place at the beginning, just ignore it.  The place Mario "warps" to is the savestate being loaded and the place where the video starts.

Here is a short description to explain all of the tricks used:
1) Jumping backwards requires doing a spinjump and then not pressing forward when you land (and hope you're facing backwards).  Since you're not pressing forward, you must do the hopping glitch through the rest of the level to not lose speed.  The hopping gltich may have been done a bit imperfectly, but the time lost isnt very noticeable (it still finishes at 360).
2) Self-explanatory.  Pretend the first mole is killed, since that what usually happens.
3) Another creative way for Mario to bounce off a shell he threw.
4) Just like 3, except Mario jumps down not knowing where the shell is.
5) Mario does a shell jump to make it over the blocks.  Since he jumped off the shell, it doesnt "chase" him.
6) This is an interseting "glitch" we discovered.  Mario cannot normally jump of a shell that he throws straight in front of him, as the shell will be going to fast.  By getting hit, however, Mario is somehow able to do this.  Getting hit does momentarily pause the game and thus lose time, but we figured it was still a cool enough trick to put up.
7) This one's a bit different from the rest.  At the end, pretend Mario got all the coins except 2 (instead of the 3 seen in the video), since this is what usually happens.

Hopefully you liked some of these options as much as we did.  To vote, you can just use the numbers listed here and on the playlist.  Feel free to vote for several ones that you liked (not just one), and also some that you didnt like.  I await your opinions!
Like A Fox
A couple things to say. I don't really care what you do, just make it fast. Don't do 6 because it loses time. It is possible to kick the shell while in air and bounce off of it in air, you just won't be able to do it consistently in real time. If it really matters to you that much which one you do then watch JXQ's TAS and see how many points he gets in each level to optimize fadeout lag, then pick a route that gets these points.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I agree with jimsfriend. 6 and 1 is out of the question (the timeloss in 1 was hugely apparent to me, and while I may see small stuff like that better than most, I still don't think you should do it. I believe you will lose time using this almost every single time, and as you know I don't think time units is a consideration at all, this should simply be fast, in my opinion).

4 was my favourite. If I was to redo this level in a TAS, I'd go with a mix of that and what I do in my run.

Again agreeing with jimsfriend though, I don't think it's a big deal what you go with, as long as you don't lose frames on purpose.
I haven't posted here in a while so I might as well give a little update.
-I got a 361 on YI2 about a week ago and not to long after so did thegreginator.  We decided on what to do for YI2 and I also added some things to spice it up even more.
-Nothing new on YI3 except for that I can get more coins.
-I made the tricky shell jump in YI4 once which means a 276 is theoretically possible on console.
-I know that a 242 on C1 is possible but I just can't seem to do it.
-Nothing new on DS1
-I still haven't gotten a 291 on SW1 a second time so 290 is most likely.

I see many people have very good individual level records, but Scott single segment time is still very good because it is SS run.

I think  SW1 is nearly impossibe beat 290 time left if you speedrun single segment run. Scott time was 285.

10.30 is possibe only theory, but i think normal possibe single segment time is about below 10.40-10.50 minutes. I mean it is impossibe beat super perfect single segment run.

Good luck. Wink

I haven't paid attention, what time are you guys aiming for?
Our best time will be something around 10min 36 sec by SDA timing and 10min50sec by TG timing.  This is a 20 second improvement over Scott Kessler's run.  We are not sure what the real time will actually be.  To calculate the 20 sec improvement we used all of our best times, not our most consistent times.  It will be somewhere between a 15-20 second improvement.
