Will a 10:57 suffice, Master-88?
A couple of weeks ago, a Japanese player did an emulated live stream on niconico douga, and reached 10:57.  The videos are finally online now.
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm9040773 The original video
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm9045850 Side-by-side view of Adam Sweeney's run and the Japanese run.
Hopefully he'll grab a console and do a formal take.

Do you have to log in to view the videos? I can't seem to work out how to view them.

Anytime you see a nicovideo url you cant use, replace "watch" with "v".  That's how I got the Mario RPG RTAs to load.
Fucking Weeaboo
It's interesting to see the two side by side like that.  Looks like Cape Mario > Small Mario for Bowser, due to First Attack Syndrome. ^^;;
is "TASさんwwwwwwwww” some kind of meme? I see that a lot in niconicodouga videos.

First thing I always do with niconico videos is turn the damn 50 zillion overlapping lines of text off.  They're annoying as hell.

difficult and stupidly random
Cool.  I like seeing the bowser/cape technique in an unassisted run.  It looks really risky for a final boss strat -- timing it so you land on bowser just as he releases his mech-bowsers.  I wonder if there's some kind of cue that he uses to synch or if it's just a seat-of-the-pants thing.

Watching the two runs side by side, it seems like there's more than 3 seconds lost in Lucid Faia's video and 2 seconds lost in the Japanese run.  In other words, i bet if you added up the best times for each level from the two vids, you'd end up less than 10:56.  I could be wrong, though.

Also:
In Yoshi's Island 4 the TAS trick with shooting the turtle shell into the water and bouncing off it seems like something that's possible to do unassisted.  I wonder if anyone's had any luck with that.

362 should be the target time for DP1 ... you gotta get that fast flying down, which i can do just about every time.

It appears that using the cape for Bowser is a lot faster than i thought.  I might practice that when i play this again.  A time of 10:52 could be possible if that strategy is nailed down.  That's a whole 7 seconds faster than Lucid Faia's run, which means even a run with a few small mistakes could yield a big improvement (again, only if the cape method for bowser is used).  I think 10:50 would be a perfect unassisted run.

Hmmmm, seems that if you can nail down the cape strategy for bowser, it would be REALLY easy to get 10:55 ... i might have to pick this game up again and start practicing the end of this run.

It's assumedly the usual "ur cheaten" arguments that you see on Youtube. There's a fair few comments mentioning RTA (real time attack) which would probably indicate it. "wwwww..." is all over the Japanese-speaking net (and, through imitation, much of the rest of it), not even sure you could class it as a meme it's that widespread.

What you say? That's the best part of watching stuff on NND. Though admittedly not if you actually want to see the video...

"wwwwww" is basically the Japanese equivalent of "lolololololol".

The "san" part is what I don't understand, really.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
It's like when you see a pirate release that has the name of the group/person first, tases are many times "released" as TAS <game> so they joke that TAS is a guy, in fact that's what I used to think back in the day.
i was wondering if anyone has ever thought about doing a small mario only (no powerups) speedrun.  i realize that this is the 11-exit topic, but i didn't want to start up a new topic just to ask.  i'm curious to see if any work has been done on this ... it might be fun to try.  I still want to work on improving the 11-exit run ... maybe when i finish with NSMBW.

Huh, I never even thought about a "no-power-up" run. I was actually thinking about practicing the 100% & seeing if I could even get close to challenging the current run, even though I doubt I would ever come close. I just downloaded the game on the WII VC a couple weeks ago, but I just started playing it today. I might mess around with the no power up run in the next few weeks & get a route & stuff. A route probably won't be too tough to figure out.

jimsfriend has been on the ball for that one.

That was insane...I thought it was a TAS at first, but then I saw the death & the minor mistakes. Well, I guess that covers the route, & the approximate time.

ROUTE
-Yoshi's Island 2
-Yoshi's Island 3
-Yoshi's Island 4
-Iggy's Castle
-Donut Plains 1 (Use shell jump trick)
-Donut Secret 1
-Donut Ghost House (Do spin jump on ghost)
-Donut Plains 3 (use shell trick & spin jump on the fuzzie)
-Donut Plains 4 (carry shell through the whole level for the last "awesome flying hammer brother" (That's his name right?)
-Morton's Castle (don't die, use springboard at end)
-Vanilla Dome 1 (do shell trick jump)
-Vanilla Secret 1
-Star Road
-Star World 2
-Star World 3
-Star World 4 (use shell trick)
-Star Road
-Bowser
-Congratulate yourself on an amazing run

PS- Was the spin jump mapped to the "R" button on the original controllers on the SNES? Because on the classic controller for the WII, it's in a fairly uncomfortable position and is somewhat out of reach. The button setup is 100x worse on the Gamecube controller too. I wonder why they didn't change this...I remember the spin jump being mapped to the "R" button on the gameboy version, that was nice.
cool route, wouldn't it be faster to not go in the pipe in DS1?
I'm the guy who complains yet never submits XD

No i believe it was mapped to X (same position as triangle on playstation).

Ugh, why couldn't they put the spin jump on the "x" button on the classic controller then?! That would make it so much better. Why would they change the button layout for worse?

EDIT:Can someone post another video of the new bowser speed trick, I can't watch it on that site.

EDIT: I also read somewhere about a glitch where in certain castles you can jump infinitely if there are bricks & some space to the left. It said you can just keep jumping up until you get to the top I think, but I couldn't really understand what they were talking about, & I also couldn't find anything about it anywhere else. I guess this trick would most likely only help in a 100% run though.

dp3 can be done faster as well.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
Practicing this some...  -> = door/pipe

My best times:
YI2 - 361
YI3 - 259
YI4 - 277 -> 275
C1 - 281 -> 245 -> 241
DP1 - 363
DS1 - 279-> 275-> 258

YI2 - 361
YI3 - 259
YI4 - 275 (276 might be possible, but it's not even worth trying)
C1 - 241  (is 242 possible?)
DP1 - 363
DS1 - Huh? This is too tricky. I need to come up with a more consistent method.

nice to see you're working on this andrew.  I've decided not to continue working on this ... and one reason was DS1.  You are right that it is very tricky.  I couldn't get consistency on that level ... only got a good attempt every 6 tries or so, and that wasn't good enough for me.

I wish you luck with the run!!  What time are you shooting for?

Hi! I'm andrewg!
I'm just aiming for the best time I can possibly get. If I finish this, this should be a pretty nice run.  8) This might end up like the SMB record when I'm done.  Wink I don't know if I have it in me to do this though. We'll see.

I think what it comes down to is this: Do I want several high quality runs or do I want 2 or 3 insanely amazing runs?

EDIT: What is likely is a time of 10:53 or so. I'm not sure.

EDIT2: Worked on Donut Secret 1 (DS1) a lot and I can do it pretty well. My usual is 257, so I'm doing pretty well Smiley I think I'm about back to the skill level I was when I first did a run of smw. DSH is probably going to be the toughest level for me to try and perfect. I'm just curious of the best times I can possibly get on each level.

I'm thinking 259 on DS1 is possible honestly.
