why doesn't SMW timing begin after pressing Start to select "1-Player Game?" The first moment you control Mario is not on the world map, but right before the "Welcome to Dinosaur Land" message box appears. Not only do you have to manually close the message box, but Mario can even briefly run and jump.

He can? Well that's news to me. I thought it was just press A to skip the dialog only, and opening dialog doesn't count.
You got a deletion wish?

See Fabian's 96 exit TAS, he does it in that one.
Mario has under a second to move around and jump, right before that opening text window appears.

I don't even know what the fuck this is
That wouldn't be considered "relevent" either, since no matter what you do, it has no effect on anything. So if you timed from start, you'd have to time the part where Mario can move at the end, too.

Edit: er, oops, that's what Lucid Faia said. I misread it.
Yeah, I said it.
Well, there's not much else I can say here. You all know my opinion. I think it makes more sense to end timing when Bowser is hit, rather than when Toadstool appears, but I'm not running things here, and SDA will go with whatever they see fit.
Wow I havent been on this site in quite a while. Wink

Is anyone working on this right now?  When I tried awhile back, I calculated that it is possible to beat the current record by about 14 seconds based on the times I could get on each level individually, but I didnt have the patience to string all these levels togther into a run.  Whoever tries this should go for that 14 second better mark, its just a matter of patience.

Good luck to anyone who tries. Smiley

Well I'm here to announce that the TAS of Super Mario World that myself and skamastaG have been working on for over 9 months now is done!  It completes every level as small Mario only, and some of the levels require some creative and entertaining solutions to beat without the cape.  Wink

Anyways, you can check it out here: http://tasvideos.org/1593S.html
zzzzzzzzzz
Are you guys going to return to working on this now that your TAS is done, or do you have something else in mind?

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do.  I might work on some non-assisted SMW individual level records.  Also, the AVI for the TAS of all the levels competed small is now available.

EDIT: Uploaded to Google Videos
Well, I've sort of been working on one off and on, basically improving each level individually. Still need to shave off some time from most of them though.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
Alright, I think I'm going to try and improve this run. So far I'm actually pretty bad at this and still used to all the other mario games physics. I guess once I play this more I'll get adjusted to them pretty quickly.  Smiley

Anyways, I hope to get under 10:50 in the next few months.

Out of curiosity, mind answering what influenced you to tackle Super Mario World as your next speedrun?

Pretty much the fact that I was able to do some interesting things after looking at the TAS smw trick page. Also, being able to do some things after talking to people in IRC that can help to beat the current run.

I've tried speedrunning this game in the past and could get around 12 minutes back then. I'd like to gradually improve that time and hopefully beat the record. Super Mario Bros. 1 and Super Mario World were pretty much the first games I ever played.

The old Mario games are fun, and I'm good at them, so I like speedrunning them and seeing what I am capable of in the games.  Smiley

I may never beat the run, but I'd like to get the best I can manage.
I don't even know what the fuck this is
What's that old Xbox run? 10:46 or something? I think you should try to beat that.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
I'm going to see what times I can get for each level, and compare it with the times skamastaG and thegreginator acheived. There times look like the best times managable on console (within reason).

I'll work on improving my time for the next few weeks, and then possibly consider taking the world record.

EDIT: heh. I posted at 10:53, It must be a sign.  Wink

Alright, I've been looking over posts in this run and The timing of this is confusing me. The timing begins when you can move Mario on the stage selection map and the timing ends when Mario cannot move any longer? Not the last hit to Bowser?

So that means if I were to beat the super mario world run by 3 seconds, but I hit Bowser at the bottom of the screen at the very end, that it would not be considered a faster run?

I think that the last hit to Bowser should be the ending for this game.
bläää
The Timing rule have been discussed before. When the current run where beaten with one condition but not with the other one.

I think SDA will keep this rule (when you can´t control mario anymore) Even if its pretty stupid.

Good luck Andrew!

Sounds good Andrew.

My sub times in PAL versio my 12.10 speedrun-

Best
individual levels                Speedrunattempts
YI 2: 363                          363
YI 3: 258                          257
YI 4: 276                          276
# 1: 230                          228 (Autoscroll is slower)

DP 1: 360                       360
DS 1: 251                       251
DGH: 322                        321

SW 1: 284                      283
SW 2: 261                      260
SW 3: 191                      190
SW 4: 267                      266

FD: 358                          355

Some reason my time table looks horrible in page. But anyway. Left side times is indivdual my best and right side times is my SS attempts sub times.

PAL have couple versio difference, just like slower autoscroll and you need longer corridor when can have full run speed. Ingame clock run bit slower too.

I think 11.55 PAL looks lot like 10.55 on US. I know my run is not that perfect. But still good.

SMW is probably easiest Mario game speedrun. This not requires as much skills than Nes mario bros games.

I check Scott both runs. I check TAS run too. It is possible get sub 10.50 on US versio. Good luck everyone.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
Thanks. Yeah, I don't know PAL times very well, right now my best speedrun through this game is pretty bad. 12:14, but I got that over 2 years ago.

I'd like to get sub 11:00, so I'm actually close to the record. I hope to get that in a few days.   Grin

So that speedrun on archive.org is legit then?

A 10:47 seems like an insane time to try and beat.

Those times are really good andrewg. The only ones I could beat are Yi2( 361 ), DS1( 258 ), and SW2(I got a 361 once).   242 might be possible on C1 if perfect but I'm not sure if it can be done on console.
Edit history:
andrewg: 2007-11-14 08:36:15 pm
Hi! I'm andrewg!
I never was able to manage a 361 on sw2 and I think it would be too difficult to get consistantly. I've actually been working on that one quite a bit.

I think I actually may have gotten a 258 once on DS1, but I'm not sure. I am pretty bad at keeping the shell until I get to the "?" box.

With YI2 I haven't tested out the hopping glitch, although it does look cool to get a 361. I see no need to practice it if it's not going to improve my time in the slightest bit though.

I practiced castle #1 more than any other level so far and I bet 342 is not possible unless you jump off the pow.
