Never give up!
Edit: I take my original statement back because I know for sure now that 11 million is a reasonable score.  I would still like to see a proper AVI recording (or an input file playable in version .64 or MAME32++ versions .117, .118u1, or .118u4) that gets over 10 million, just so I can glean some knowledge from it.  Doesn't even matter to me what character's used.

The original statement is below for archival purposes.

Even knowing you, and seeing the picture right in front of me, the only way I'm going to be convinced that score is real is if you can point us to a video of a full playthrough that gets anywhere NEAR that.  (Even if you have to make a video yourself and put it up - because I haven't had a lot of luck finding Battle Circuit playthroughs of any sort, much less superplays.)

Show us VIDEO proof of a score above roughly 9 million in this game and I'll believe yours is real.  (I well understand you probably would have had this week claimed anyway even with a believable score, so really, you don't have much to lose by showing us properly how it's done.)[/i]

Never give up!
1,064,200 - AquaTiger - Stage 4 - Alien Green

Barely lost a life to B.O.B., and I once again ended at Octopus Mk. II.

Also, my earlier statement (that got missed because of page break glitches), when brought up in the IRC channel, has led someone to point me to a 27 million point replay on the MAME Action Replay Page (http://marp.retrogames.com).  If I can find Mame version 0.55b (edit: I have it now), then I'll be able to watch it in full and attempt to get some strategies - but all I know for sure right now is that it was done with Pink Ostrich, so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to apply unless I switch characters.

There's also apparently a 38 million point superplay somewhere out there, and it's my understanding that BoltR knows where it is.  I'm going to do a little more searching and see if I can find it myself in the meantime.  Mike's told me 38 million, which is what I heard first (because Normand typoed), is impossible barring a scoring bug.  So the 27 million point replay's going to have to be what I watch.

The best part is that the 11.2 million score is actually a sandbag score too, hahaha. Although the surprise is ruined now anyway because of the known 27 million.

For anyone who really wants to watch the MARP replay:

1) Go to MARP and get the Battle Circuit inp.
2) Since they don't carry really old MAME versions, find the correct version here.
3) Since the latest set of MAME roms is too new, you need the Battle Circuit rom for that version. Luckily, since most rom sites are way outdated, this helps in this case. Search for "rom world" here.
4) Since this particular replay is on the Japanese version (a clone), you'll need both the Euro and Japan zips.
5) Unzip the old MAME version and the inp (replay). Put the roms into the roms folder, and put the inp into the inp folder.
6) From the command line, use "mame batcirj -replay batcirj" (assuming the inp is named batcirj.inp).

Or if you just want a summary, there isn't really any magic to it. The deal is just that the TLB (true last boss aka secret boss) gives huge bonuses if you beat him, including a multiplier with the number of coins you have (!). BTW, you don't really have to worry about this since our scoring is linear, but most importantly, unless you are a beat 'em up god like Mike, you will have no shot at the TLB, who is beyond ridiculous. Mike sent me a wmv a while back over AIM, of the TLB, and it's too bad I deleted it or I would post it.

Requirements to fight TLB:
1) 3.2 million points
2) 1000 coins remaining OR bought at least 6 upgrades
3) Choose to fight instead of pulling out the disk (which gets you the normal ending)

I'm not going to worry at all about TLB strategy, but if I get the chance to fight him, I'll do it for lulz (plus you get middling extra points from hitting him before you die). I wouldn't really say the scoring system is broken, there's just a big dichotomy between 1cc TLB scores and non-TLB scores.

I'm remembering the IRC conversation I had with BoltR, who insisted he had a chance to beat Mike this week, him trying to figure out what genre this week's game was, and why being a beat 'em up would make any difference.

As an aside, this info is in the FAQ at gamefaqs. Actually there was an FAQ there for Blue's Journey and Armed Police Batrider too.

Are you even playing these games?

He told me that he is, but he's playing these games for fun instead of trying to go for score. Posting 0 is just showing that I guess. At first I wondered if I was supposed to take offense, but apparently there's nothing demonstrative about it. Shrug?
No offense intended. I was just trying to add a sense of lightheartedness to the tourney, since many arcade games are damn hard to get good scores on, especially on one credit. Enhasa’s done a great job of making this fun, without a narrow focus on competitiveness, and introduced a bunch of neat games that many people (well, me at least) haven’t heard of. I might play more Cameltry after all of this, and maybe Uo Poko without the sound on.

In retrospect, none of the games in the tourney were very long. But Battle Circuit seems like the shortest beat em up I’ve played.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Yeah, I figured out pretty quickly that you didn't mean any harm. Also as you guessed, I intentionally tried to avoid picking games that were too long or have lots of milking. (Although of course in the playtime sense, "length" in terms of how much burn you get out of a game is greatly increased when you don't use unlimited continues.)

1. I recorded my run on wolfmame .99. I'll give you the link to both the inp and wolfmame .99 when I release my inps (yes, plural) on Sunday

2. I never said anything about 38 million AquaTiger. This is what I said about scoring on IRC.

<jewyama> and normand made a slight typo, he meant 27 million (he actually meant 28 million).
<jewyama> 38 million is impossible
EDIT: Oops, I'm stupid, I failed to look at the time and your second post, Aquatiger.

I still think people should focus more on surviving, because coins mean nothing unless if you beat the TLB (true last boss). However, if you get the chance to fight the TLB, you should always fight him because there is no penalty for doing so.

Also, there really isn't anything broken about the scoring system, it's just big risk for big reward. You have to sacrifice a lot of upgrades to get a good score, and don't even think about extends.

Enhasa: Blame BoltR and his detached calculations for letting the cat out of the bag Sad Also, I'll put up the Captain Silver video where the guy gets an S-rank on the TLB either tonight or tomorrow (I learned a lot from it).
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
You know BoltR, he has the highest ratio of confidence in knowing what he's talking about, to actually knowing what he's talking about, of anyone on SDA. Wink

PS once again, these smileys are terrible, I'm going to do something about it later.

Haters gonna hate

2,297,600 - Breakdown - Stage 6 - Cyber Blue

Died the first time on Octopus Mk. 2, and after the damage dealt from coming back to life it only took a jab to kill him.  But managed to get through 5 deathless (obviously), just barely though.  Had As or better on all boss fights.  Miniboss in 6 got me while I still had 3 bites left on the giant pig, died right on top of it in fact :-/.

I've now beaten each of the first five stages without dying at least once, and I'm pretty sure if I can make it through them all in a scratch run I'll make it to stage 7 and an extend.  Cyber Blue sucks for cash, this last one was a particularly good run for coins for me and I still came up just short at the start of 6.

Never was a big fan of beat em ups really, but I'm a big fan of this game.  Good pick.
Silver Hawk!

I really suck.
I didn't have any time to play this weeks game.  I had the chance to play a couple times in the last few days, so here are the results.  I doubt I'll be submitting more.

558,900 - Xaggoth - Stage 3 - Cyber Blue
wise fwom yo gwave
3,540,100 - stanski - TLB (master GAY)  - Alien Green

Fuck this stupid fucking game and its goddamn broken scoring system, i've gotten to the final boss with 1 life 2 times now. This is the dumbest thing ever, I give up on this stupid shit.

I'm sorry if this game isn't easy like streets of rage 2 Tongue And wow, the scoring system is so broken when you can't even beat the game. Maybe you should try someone other than Alien Green, or wait, you probably can't, because you need those life containers ;).

Try Alien Green's bee assault attack (hold the button until you start glowing pink) against the TLB. You probably didn't know about it because you were too busy grabbing every other enemy  Grin

I tried to record but I forgot to clear nvram, anyways FU mike, suck my dick, beat this shit:

stanski - 13,904,100 - ALL - alien green

BTW this is my last score for the week on this, i've spent 31 hours on this game.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I actually got an ALL earlier today, but I was too embarrassed since I didn't get the 3.2mil required for TLB. Actually it was funny since I was wondering if I would get it, then I thought I would since I felt maybe it was 3.0 instead of 3.2, then I remembered it was 3.2 for sure but I would get it anyway, then I didn't. Yeah.

3,225,300 - Enhasa - Stage 8 - Pink Ostrich
Haters gonna hate

2,914,800 - Breakdown - Stage 7 - Cyber Blue

Changed my play up a bit so I'd get enough coins for an extend at the end of stage 5, and that extend got me to stage 7.  Died at Pluto, he is pretty easy compared to Zipang and the monkey thing, but I played the level pretty badly and only got to him with about half a bar.  Hoping for either a lame ALL or a trip to the TLB by the end of the week.

This is the only game so far in the tourney that really made me wish I had a gamepad.  I'm not sure how well my Z key (attack) is going to work at the end of the week, and the d,u motion for the uppercut is decidedly awkward on the arrow keys.  I'm just glad Cyber Blue doesn't have any qcf or full circle moves, not sure how I'd work those.
wise fwom yo gwave
qcf is easy on keyboard once you get the motion, full 360 is a bitch though...

My feelings on The Demon Rush
I uploaded the Japanese video of a Captain Silver player killing the TLB really fast.

http://files.filefront.com/battle+circuitwmv/;10334963;/fileinfo.html

A couple of notes:

-You don't have to special through the diving attack, I think the guy does that to tack on a little extra damage. You can just run up or down to dodge it.

-Most characters need to run to dodge the final boss's punch attack. I guess Yellow Iris and Captain Blue could use their dash jump attacks, but I haven't tried.

-You can just special through the blocks, I think the Captain Silver used his bdl early so he could unleash a fully charged ice flurry when the boss landed.

-The final boss takes the most damage when in his true Genie form.

A couple of character specific notes:

Cyber Blue: You can't abuse specials, or else you'll hit the final boss and lose life. You should stay on the bottom for the most part, so that you can run up and dodge attacks without needing to use a special (this doesn't always work). Try to minimize special use for when you really need it, or when the final boss summons the blocks (you won't lose life while he is off screen). Use a bdl so that you have it active right as the final boss lands after summoning the blocks, then do your down, up uppercut.

Alien Green: The only effective attack against the final boss is the fully charged bee assault.

I would post about other characters, but it's not like anyone is playing them :-/
3,751,200 - Normand - Stage 7 - Alien Green
229,200 - LLCoolDave - Stage 2

Only had time for a single try.
yes, mario riding nothing
1482700 - BoltR - Stage 5

I think the reign of La Mulana may be coming to a close. Only two more bosses... I think... must sink more time into it....

Go ahead, try BoltR, it's futile. Anyways, Battle Circuit requires effort, something you never expend, right? ;P Well, except on shit games like La Mulana (oh, I played it).

Also Stanski, you can go suck my dick

Replays:

http://hosted.filefront.com/mikwuyma/2237092

To play these replays, you will need Wolfmame Plus .099. After you get wolfmame, set your rom folder, then select Battle Circuit (the euro version) and go to file -> playback input, then select the input you want to play.

If you already use Wolfmame Plus .99, be sure to delete your nvram (go to the folder named "nvram", then delete batcir.nv).

Some comments:

Alien Green: Yeah, this run sucks. This was literally the first time I tried a full run with Alien Green.

Cyber Blue: About the final boss, I meant to do a special instead of jump near the end. I might have died anyways, but that was a really lame way to die Sad Also, two words, special abuse Tongue

Yellow Iris: This run will bore you, unless if you're very interested in how to get a high score (the run is at least 40 minutes long). It's actually possible to get 30 million with Iris, but that requires sacrificing the life extend and upgraded uppercut. Sacrificing the latter isn't too bad, but sacrificing the former makes stages 3 and 4 difficult IMO. I'm still trying to get a run that beats the 27 million MARP replay though :-/

Another thing, I jab enemies before whipping them because some of them can hit me before I can whip them (the four-armed strongmen come to mind).

Also, I'm surprised more people didn't use Pink Ostrich. She is by far the easiest character to survive with (fly over everything).

Alright, enough of that.  Winning is nice, but getting there was all the fun certainly.  Thanks Enhasa for putting together and running this great little tourney.  These last five weeks have been a blast.  Thanks to mike for kicking ass at Battle Circuit and letting me avoid a tiebreaker I'm assuming I would've lost.  Props to stanski for making me sweat during the last couple weeks, willing to bet you'd have beaten me if you'd tried a little harder week 1 or 2.

Looking forward to the next tourney, I have no reason to doubt it'll be any less fun than this one was.
This tournament was pretty fun, wish I could have afforded some more time to actually put some effort into some of my scores. Looking forward to round 2 (I hope there will be another one).

Cromarty: I intended to use a price I might win as a bounty for some speedrun, so if you don't have any particular personal use for it (e.g. you'd just be selling it or anything) you/we/I could use it to slightly support the community.

And congratulations to Breakdown who managed to somehow beat stanski. I am not particularly sure how anyone could manage to do that, but apparently you did. Great job.
Damn. Missed the dead line again Sad I definitely had fun with what I played, though.
