30,330-Empire Marsh 1

Sadly, I finally beat the Master Higgins/Hitler combo for a first boss and then died twice in about 10 seconds.

BTW, sorry about the confusion with my last score submission.  That would have been Jungle Stage 2 where I died.  Luckily I did manage to improve somewhat.

So whats next weeks game, Rastan Saga? Grin

Garlic guy is easy once you know how to move, the level is damn hard though.  Those weighted spinning platforms are the bane of my existence (well, Blue's existence anyway).

Edit:  Took the screenshot, might as well post it.

Only a tiny improvement, but cracked the 250K mark.  Still hoping for 300k by Sunday.

I played around with enemies and abilities and found what must be the most efficient way of doing things but I still have no idea how you managed to get that score by that stage Enhansa.

There's a superplay on Cyberfanatix (google for it, you might need to register at the site too, I forget). It's not very good for scoring, but it has a lot of hidden items in the vid. Also a really short FAQ on gamefaqs, although you might know all that already.

I think I could get 350k if I really wanted this week, and I think it's possible to get 500k if you really knew what you were doing and milked with your extra lives. There is no way I want to record this game because I might as well do a speedrun of a game I like more, heh. Also, I think the lottery at the end of each stage is random, and there's no way I'm dealing with that bullshit. (Although, in the super-play, the guy looks like he knows what he's doing and he gets 1st prize every time, so maybe there's a trick to it. I pull the cord instead of the handle, just like he does, and I get 1st a lot more than 1/5 of the time.)

I'm also not going to write some kind of thesis like BoltR did for Cameltry, but here are some tips for the rest of the week.

My path is Jungle Zone -> Lower Earth Empire (use the travel agency) -> Empire Marsh -> Starge Space -> Daruma Empire. I'm pretty sure about this.

The most important thing is to figure out how to combo. Hint: the very first thing you should do is hit the first 3 guys going left with the leaf. The first number that appears as a score after 0 for me is something like 1900. I stick with the leaf the entire game actually. I figured at the very end I would want to switch to the acorn, but there is never a need. Oh and you might notice that ducking while shooting is usually a good idea. Play around and you will find out the reason for that.

The next most important thing is to figure out where the hidden items are. Most of them are easy to find (a lot of them are up high at the end or start of platforms, or on high ledges, or between the swinging plants) but some of them are not, and you might want to watch the super-play. The most important items are definitely the 10k ones. Just like you don't actually want to use the invincibility to kill guys, you don't want to use the 10k items to kill guys either.

I think this is a game that really benefits from playing from score actually. There are better platformers for general play that would be worse for a scoring competition, like the alt games for this week. The scoring system is great and tricky to execute well and reminds me of Rayforce really. It's also disjoint so if you mess up, it doesn't hurt you later unlike a game with chaining. And looking for secrets and finding scoring tricks in a linear platformer is pretty fun I think.

If you play this game and just acorn bomb everyone, it does get kinda dumb and boring after a while. Well, after you can 1cc first I guess.

We already had both a Taito game and a platformer, otherwise I think Rastan would be a cool game to play.

Since you asked, and I'm sure you'll like this answer, next week will be the shmup. Wink It will be the best game of the tourney, although I bet some people will disagree, haha.

Done with this piece of ass game.

I'm not really a huge fan of this game (I like 3-4 other tourney games more), but I do think it's better than Super Mario World. Wink

It's a sad day when a game actually makes me miss Cameltry...
At least I have Assassins Creed to play through now!

Cameltry is awesome, every game would make you miss it. Assassin's Creed sucks, it will make you miss Blue's Journey rofl.
Silver Hawk!
I was thinking about it, and I figured we've had:

A puzzle
A platformer
A shmup next week, you say. Cheesy

I'll wager a guess that there will be a beat em up one of the other two weeks.  Whats the 5th game, Tron?
Never give up!

I'm done with this game.  I just don't perform very well at 2D platformers, especially when it takes just 2 hits to kill you early on and health powerups are just not all that common.  I'm too reckless for that kind of play.
I don't think I'll be submitting anything else either.  I know I could do better, but I have no time (this coming week are my midterms).  The game isn't enjoyable  enough for me to play it for fun (not like Cameltry).  Maybe I'll have more time for the next games.
I still havn't figured out what those combos are supposed to be. Hitting multiple enemies with the same thrown enemy doesn't give any bonus score over hitting them seperately, throwing multiple enemies at once doesn't seem to chaneg a thing either, unless I missed something.

I havn't won the lottery even once yet.

People were complaining about having to register at Cyberfanatix (I think I got these vids long before they made you register?), so I uploaded the vids: part 1, part 2. I will take this down in less than 2 days, when the week ends, so hurry up and get them. To reiterate, this superplay really doesn't score well, it's useful to learn where the hidden items are though.

Combos is probably a bad word since there's no inflation, it's just natural. Throwing A into B C D gives more points than throwing A into B and then C into D. When you throw A B C into D E, you are basically triple dipping with each enemy you kill. You need to actually throw the individual enemies into the targets; if only the bottom guy of your stack hits the enemy, it will only count once. Top actually works, but I try to just make all the guys hit the enemies anyway. This is why you often want to duck as you throw.

Another satisfied customer. 25% chance of liking the shmup is probably too high btw. Probably closer to 5%.

The attak and jump button are counter intuitive. Sad
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
A whole lot of games have attack as button 1 (or even 3) so I don't assume anything and it doesn't bother me. However! You can remap your keys in MAME easily, even per game. Hit <tab> and you can change your controls.

Screw trying, I'm in this to have fun.

Actually I don't really care if you try hard or not, I just wanted to say that (it's from Donpachi btw).

Heh, this way no one's worried about getting last place.

I don't understand why they put shrinking in this game. It's rarely useful and you could easily play without it.

I like these games so far. If I didn't have infinite credits I would probably hate them, but yay for emulators.

It's practically necessary for some of the platforming.

The deadline is Monday anyway. A lot of people are making that mistake for some reason. I sometimes get slightly confused myself.

Watching that superplay helped a lot, as did an explanation of how combos work.  Thanks for both Enhasa.
