everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Congratulations to Breakdown for winning the SDAAT! It was a photo finish between him and stanski! Also thanks to all participants and stay tuned for the speedrunning tourney which will come in late fall/winter or something? Not soon, at any rate.

Top Random Prize: Cubivore (GC, complete) to scaryice (here, I found some youtube that isn't a dumb LP or video review)
Other Prize: Viewtiful Joe (PS2, disc only) to Cromarty

Contact me with shipping info please! If you want to turn down the prize, like maybe you have the game already, you can decline, and I will go down the list until I find a happy owner.

Bonus Week! (although not really, I'm not keeping score, actually there is no score to keep, just play for fun)

1000 Miglia: Great 1000 Miles Rally and its sequel, Mille Miglia 2: Great 1000 Miles Rally

These are awesome third-person racing games (TPR?). The ending to the 2nd game is the most awesome thing you will ever see. Your goal in Bonus Week is to find out what it is! Haha, it's not on vgmuseum, you'll have to play to find out yourself! BTW, check out the Batrider endings, they are too awesome. JYUJI WOW! Although Hei-Cob in Gunbird 2 is pure classic.

[hr]

How to get MAME: You can use whatever version of whatever emulator you want, but here is one.
How to set controls: Load a game, then press <tab>.
How to get roms: "emucation" is a nice search string.

Check the subsequent posts for details on each particular week and for scoring results. There were no signups (although there was a hype thread), so please play even if you just saw this thread. Even if you miss some weeks, you can still play in other weeks. There will be participation prizes!

Each playing week goes from Monday midnight EST to the next Monday. Post your high scores when you get them. Follow the directions for each particular game, but only use one credit! Submit as many times as you want. I will tally these and rank everyone by their eventual high score. You get 1 point for each person you finish ahead of, plus 1 extra for participating. Your scores for the 5 weeks will be combined for your final score.

Feel free to post whatever in this thread, such as scores, discussion about the games, strategies, whether or not you've played the games before and how awesome they are, etc. Do not worry about recording an inp or taking a screenshot or feeling the need to prove your score (although you can if you want), since this is all for fun and prizes do not depend on how well you do. I guess you could cheat, but that would be lame, but I don't expect that to be a problem anyway.

I will be playing in this tourney as well, but since I have the advantage of knowing what the games will be, I will not be eligible to win the tourney, nor to win any prizes. If you finish ahead of me though, you do get a point of course.

This tourney is for fun and not serious at all so please join, even if you think you suck at video games or you don't know any of the games involved. That's actually the point, to expose people to a whole world of great games that they may not know about (so I will try to pick games with no console or PC port, or with relatively unknown ports). You can spend as much time as you want each week. Maybe you have a lot of time and spend several hours, maybe you're busy and only have 15 minutes, that's fine. Maybe you only participate in one week, who knows. Don't be embarrassed to submit your score, even if it looks low compared to everyone else. Don't emphasize the competitive aspect too much, the point is just to participate and have fun!

To further encourage participation, I will be giving away some prizes in the form of video games that I will mail to you to keep. For now, I think I will only give out two prizes, but I might increase if the participation is incredible (doubt it).

- Random participant who played all 5 weeks: a rare Atlus game. For those who don't know, Atlus games are rare. Uh, I think I'm underselling this one.
- Random participant from a randomly selected week: a not-so-rare Capcom game. I might be overselling this one, it doesn't even come with the original box I think.

WHY DON'T YOU CAMELTRY HARD

Everyone knew I would pick a Taito game, so might as well get it out of the way. Plus some people had some concerns about finals week and this is a very "pick up and play for a quick game" sort of deal. Also this game is like speedrunning so yeah.

Cameltry is an awesome game where you direct a ball through a maze. It is similar to Super Monkey Ball (another awesome game) in that you control the arena instead of the ball. This game is from 1989, so you probably had no clue that they made games this awesome back in the 80's, but it's true.

Unlike the other games in SDAAT, Cameltry actually got console and PC ports, but it's obscure enough that I'm still using it. It is known on the SNES as On the Ball and DS as Labyrinth, where it got terrible reviews because reviewers are idiots. It was also in Taito Legends 2, released on PS2, Xbox, and PC.

Unlike the other games in SDAAT, you might actually be able to beat this one. Just kidding! (It's up to you to determine if I mean you will beat others or you will beat none of them.)

Instructions:

If you have a choice, the particular one you want is Cameltry (US, YM2610). File name should be cameltry.zip and you put that in the roms subfolder of MAME. Let me know if you have problems.

Use left/right or whatever your dial is set to, to move the arena. You can use analog control (like a stick, mouse, or trackball), but I just use digital left/right anyway. I bet lots of people wouldn't figure out, but button 1 actually does something. Use it.

Secret character select! If you hold on to start (default is the 1 key) while you select the course, you can select other characters. The default blue ball is called Mist Bay. You can use whichever character you want. Gotta try em all!

Scoring is based on time but also other things you can do. Scoring secrets! Figure out how to score. It has come to my attention that you can actually win this 00 10 20 etc game you play when you're about to die, and not die. If you see this game, consider yourself dead. This way, luck is minimized and BoltR is happy.

Let's try Special Course! We will be playing Expert Special Course for SDAAT. You can play the others for fun or to better learn the game. Please follow this format to post your scores (use commas):

9,999 - Radix - Stage 6 - Mist Bay

Bonus game:

Let's say you have played enough Cameltry for the week and want another game (impossible!). Or maybe you are a terrible person and you don't actually think this game is awesome. Well here is a bonus game for you. If you hate this as well, you probably have terrible taste and also hate everything, which means you should go into a closet and slit your wrists.

Since many 80's arcade games are either really sucky or really popular and famous already, I guess this is an 80's sort of week. The obvious other game to mention would be Marble Madness, but that game is pretty famous and lots of people know the NES port. Ok, screw this, just go play Gauntlet or Forgotten Worlds. Wink

This is the journey of a little guy named Blue. GIVE A HAND TO RAGUY'S PEOPLE

This game was released by ADK in 1990, the same year they graced the world with Magician Lord. Sometimes I wonder why they didn't release this as the Neo Geo pack-in instead. Alpha Denshi (ADK) is a great company who, along with this game and Magician Lord, is also famous for World Heroes and... Twinkle Star Sprites. Cheesy This is a good comparison because this game is almost as manly as TSS.

Blue's Journey is an awesome platformer where you follow Blue on his journey to save the insect princess. It was also released on the Neo Geo (naturally) and recently on Virtual Console, something that I just learned. This game really shows off the Neo Geo hardware, looking and sounding great for a game from 1990.

Instructions:

Since this is a Neo Geo game, first thing to do is get the Neo Geo bios. Google for "brainkiller mame bios". You can just go ahead and get all the bioses in the first section (not the unofficial ones at the bottom) and not have to worry about getting any more bioses. But all you need is neogeo.zip. Put it in the roms subfolder where you put cameltry.zip or bjourney.zip. Again, do not unzip your MAME roms.

There is only one rom version, it's called Blue's Journey / Raguy. The game tells you the controls when you start.

Scoring is based on, well, I'm sure you can figure out.

Please follow these directions to post your score. They are kinda new. Look at the scores post, the 2nd post in this thread. At the top, I will have the post where I last updated (page:post). Do not edit posts that are older than that post, or I will not see the score. If you post multiple times after that post, however, it would really help me out if you delete or use s in [brackets] to strike out your outdated scores that I haven't seen. That way, I only have to put the very newest score for you. Also, to prevent yourself from showing twice on the thread, if you want, you can quote your old score like scaryice did. That way, I can quickly see what your old score is, so I can replace it.

Quote:
3,333 - Radix - Jungle Zone 1

6,666 - Radix - Jungle Zone 2
9,999 - Radix - Jungle Zone 2

Bonus Game:

I am going to only pick one Taito game for reals, but that's not a requirement for the bonus game, which apparently nobody cares about anyway. Try The New Zealand Story and Liquid Kids for other great platformers. Also you can try Magician Lord, also released in 1990 by ADK, for a little compare and contrast.

WELCOME TO VIOLENT CITY

This is the most awesome game you will ever play. It's all downhill the rest of your life, it's all downhill the rest of this tourney. I apologize that everything else will now feel less awesome in comparison.

Armed Police Batrider is an awesome shmup from Raizing. It's futuristic Manhattan and you have to blow stuff up to stop this evil corporation or whatever.

This game will own you hard. You will not beat it, but you will have great fun as you get owned. I am including this to have variety in difficulty of the games I guess. AFAIK only a couple western players have even beaten the full game, and I think the top western score is 11.4 million. The top score is 29.2 million, and nobody can even figure out how this was done, so you can't expect to really know what you're doing in a week. Just blow stuff up and have fun.

Instructions:

The version you want is Armed Police Batrider (Japan, version B). Controls are button 1 to shoot (you can hold it down) and button 2 to bomb, and button 3 to change your option formations if you have a Garegga ship. If you don't know what that means, don't worry about it, or you could hit it and see if it does anything I guess.

We will be playing Advanced Course this week. There is some stuff you'll really want to set in the options. When the game starts up, hit <tab> and go to dip switches. Then you want to make it look like the screenshot below. Make sure service mode is on (trust me on this one), stage edit, guest player, player select, and special course (this one is really not needed for this week but go ahead). Then you hit F3 to restart and the settings will be applied. Of course, you are allowed to use the things you turned on, like stage edit, secret characters, character select, etc.

Thanks bsidwell for reminding me to mention all this. The first thing you want to do when you boot up, is to use the start button (not button 1) to select game mode. Then you want to select the 3rd option (7 stages), then do whatever you want with stage edit, then you have 4 options for character select. The top one is a choice of preselected teams, 2nd is team edit, 3rd is random, and 4th allows you to use 1 character for all your lives. Otherwise, each life corresponds to a different one of your three characters.

I just realized I should talk about ship type as well. When you're selecting your ship, you can press button 1, 2, 3, or start (ie A B C or S). 1 (default) has a stronger main shot but weaker option shot. 2 is weaker main shot but stronger option shot. 3 makes both shots stonger but lowers your speed. Start makes both shots weaker but increases your speed. When you're posting your score, include your ship type, like this:

8,675,309 - Radix - Stage 6 - Shorty (A) / Birthday (C) / Bornnam (S)

Scoring:

Out of the kindness of my heart, I had a paragraph here with some superplays because people are going to just look for them themselves anyway, but I got some complaints. So I took them down. If it was up to me, I'd rather everyone figure out themselves how to score in these games (it's fun), so whatever. Oh yeah, I'm taking down the link to the discussion thread too.

Scoring, uh, good luck. There are decisions to be made and things to try before you even start the game, like which order of stages to play, which ships to pick and in which order, etc. I know AquaTiger will go very insane but be very happy doing this.

I should probably say some basic stuff though. Raizing games are famous for rank. This is a concept where the game adjusts its own difficulty. If you are kicking ass, it will get harder, and if you get hit, it will get easier. It is exactly like Level 1-3 and Die in God Hand, if you've played that. There are a ton of things that affect rank, such as surviving longer, picking up powerups, hoarding bombs, etc. Many many shmups have rank, but in most Raizing games, you are actually supposed to control your rank to manage the difficulty basically. You can pretty much play through this game without rank control for the first 5 stages or so, so until you can beat that much, you don't especially have to worry about it. And whenever you die, at least it had some purpose I guess.

Lots of your score comes from medaling. In some shmups such as this one, there is item chaining. The first time you pick up a medal, it will be worth 100. Next medal you see, 200, and exponential up to 10000. If you don't pick up a medal while there is no other medal still left on the screen, your chain will drop back to 100. Also the announcer might go nooooooooo if your chain was high, don't do that.

There are tons of scoring secrets in Raizing games. The main one is that there is a lot of destructable scenery that you can blow up with your bombs, that give medals. This is not like a Cave game where there is a bomb button but you never want to use it or your score will be nerfed. Please get that idea out of your head. Bombs do provide temporary invincibility, but they are more like a secondary weapon than a life preserver. There are lots of things you can do with bombs and you want to use them a lot. Also if you hoard them, the rank goes up a lot, which is very bad. Bombs are actually picked up in fragments, which combine for "full" bombs, sort of like the system in Mountain of Faith. When you are out of bombs completely, and pick up a couple fragments, you can use those (they will last shorter of course).

Have fun and try all sorts of stuff, but remember never to forget the main goal. Which is to blow stuff up.

Really, you will likely have more fun this week if you act like Maur and Battle Garegga.

<VorpalEdge> battle garegga is great if you ignore the rank system
<VorpalEdge> i never get past the fourth boss anyways, so i don't care

Bonus Game:

Almost forgot bonus games for this week. For a Raizing game that Mike actually loves instead of hates, try Mahou Daisakusen. It is totally awesome and has incredibly unique enemy design. Also you will find out where some of these APB characters come from.

More Taito games as bonus games. Some awesome ones that work well in MAME are RayForce and Darius Gaiden. Also Metal Black and Gekirindan.

I can recommend shmups forever so ask if you want.

ALL YOU NEED IS TO USE THE LEVER

After the most complicated game of the tourney comes the most simplistic. SDAAT: now with 100% more cats! Also you will learn where the meow meow meow meow cats in Dangun Feveron come from. I wanted to trick KennyMan by promising a Cave game and picking this one, but he's not even in the tourney, lame.

Uo Poko is an awesome game, considering that it has controls simpler than Pong (all you can do is push the down button). I hope you never become physically disabled, but if you were, this would be the best game ever. Anyway, you have these cats, and cats are supposed to hate water, but these cats are diving deeper and deeper into the sea for some unknown reason. Solve the mystery! Incidentally, the subtitle of Uo Poko translates to "lots of fish."

As you can easily tell, this is a "falling blocks" puzzle game. There may be better games, but this one works out very well to play single-player. I don't want to hear any whining about bad luck with which balls you get, since it's not random! Doh, you can only blame yourself!

Instructions:

The version we will be playing is Puzzle Uo Poko (International). Don't forget the "puzzle" part or you will have trouble finding it. For scoring, survive and make combos and get time bonus! Yeah! Lots of instructions for this game!

Bonus Game:

If you don't want to lose your HARDCORE EDGE in between weeks 3 and 5, I humbly suggest Shock Troopers. If you want to see the totally awesome and superior puzzle game that I would have picked if I wasn't going for variety, play Pop 'n Pop (bonus: my avatar is a character in this game). There are a lot of good puzzle games, so the last one I'll mention is yet another Taito game, this one from the 80s: Plotting.

Whoops, I just remembered DK64 wanted me to edit this in. You should really try out Tetris the Grand Master 1 and 2, considered by most people to be the best versions of Tetris ever. You can get 1 from the normal place, and for 2, try your friend google and search for tgm2.zip

IN THE YEAR 20XX, A BATTLE FOR WORLD DOMINATION NOW BEGINS!!

By process of elimination, many of you correctly guessed that the last week would be a beat 'em up. Mike actually guessed this exact game weeks ago, purely off the fact that it makes more sense for a scoring competition than other top genre games. Incidentally, if you hate this game for scoring, you can blame him too.

Battle Circuit is an awesome beat 'em up by Capcom for the CPS2, probably the very best arcade beat 'em up in terms of quality to fame ratio. In AD 20xx, war was beginning. Everyone is trying to get this disk that does something I forget. The best part of the game is the super evil villain named Saturn who has a big head and considers himself a genius but instead is just a bumbling fool. The second best part of the game is discovering where Mike's avatar comes from. The third best part of this game is everything else since this game is too awesome.

Instructions:

We will be playing Battle Circuit (Euro 970319). I'm sure you guys are familiar with this genre. You beat them up, hence beat 'em up (bmup?) Beat them up!

Bonus Game:

Other top-tier arcade beat 'em ups (the CPS was legendary for this) include Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara (a good game to play, but bad for scoring since it's way too long and you go around doing all the secrets for points) and Alien vs. Predator (which is good, but the last stage is too long). If you have played lots of these games already, as I know some of you have, a good but rather obscure one is Gaia Crusaders. Check it out! Oh, I would be remiss not to mention Taito's Growl. GROWL! Growl is probably the most awesome beat 'em up ever actually. You beat up all these poachers and free animals who kick ass for you and it's like PETA only with a lot more violence and awesome.

Oh and Liger would probably want me to mention Ninja Warriors.

Just so people know, this is how you join: submit a score.

Yeah, it's that easy. Also, I can give a tutorial on recording inp files if people want replays. Just ask.

Well you told me to post my first score in the thread to get things going, Mr. Picky. (Though my first three can be seen in that screenshot) I'll write it out and format it correctly when I actually have a score I think is worth submitting!
Let's fight to computer!
Well, I put my score in so now it's time to get to the most important part of any multi-game tournament: Bitching about the game selection.
Why aren't we playing Cleopatra Fortune instead?

What isn't to understand? If you get a row of bricks they are cleared (and any pieces of the bricks that are part of that line).

The characters disappear when they are surround on all sides by walls. (Including the side or bottom of the play field)
Pretend they need air to breath, and it only comes in from the top. If you suffocate them they die and rot away instantly.

Doh, while you were posting this, I actually figured out how to play Cleopatra Fortune. Then as BONUS, I figured out how to play Land Maker.

Good, because it took me less time to figure it out than it did to post it ;p

lol I can't either, it's too awesome. I almost beat special course my first try just now (and I did terrible on stage 1, I ended with like 2 secs), so maybe I should have picked special course heh.
