I said I'd put up a score for every course, and I'm fulfilling that promise here.

Training Course (which only allows the default ball, which is actually called Mist Bry - look carefully at another ball that has an A in the name and you'll see what I mean):
94,570 - AquaTiger - ALL

Beginner Course:
106,790 - AquaTiger - ALL - Space Invader

Expert Course:
82,780 - AquaTiger - Stage 5 - Space Invader

Special Course (the one that matters here):
100,910 - AquaTiger - Stage 5 - Space Invader

Despite having fulfilled what I wanted to do before stopping, I'm not done with this game just yet.  I am, however, done with the Training, Beginner, and Expert courses.  Any further time I spend with this game will be with the Special course.

I want to get at least 150k before I stop.  If Xaggoth's (I specify Xaggoth because on the current table, his score's the one above mine) score goes higher than 150k, my challenge becomes to beat his score.

With the way the scores have panned out, I know for a fact that I have no chance of getting top 5 or even top 10.  I lack the raw talent and the patience.

AquaTiger: Luck and Black Steel are just as important as talent in this game.

See, this game is turning me emo.

Also, luck is more important than skill in the 650-750k range.

If I ever did a speedrunning tourney, it would be something like this. You can replace nes/snes with just older console though.

Personally, I think MAME speedrun tourneys would kick ass.  It's a veritable goldmine of candidates, most of which will never get into SDA proper (thanks to the rule against emulation).

Where are you looking?  In the topic linked from the high score index, only three people posted scores..

Special course is more intuitive but I think I have a headache, that'll do.

Over 600k most likely coming soon, but no more for now.  Playing this too long gives me vertigo.

Haha, I was going to complain in my first score post about this, but it's not bothering me anymore.

rashreflection: I agree, except a lot of people wouldn't be able to beat the games :-/

I know there's a bunch of score notes that could normally answer this question, but will someone please explain to me how the hell I pulled off a score like this?  Because I don't really know either.  (And when I ran out of time, I had JUST reached a potential point-farming spot, so that's not it.)

I'm going to sit on this one for a couple of days.  For all I know, this could be the last score I post.  Or I could get sudden inspiration and pull a 300k+ score.  I don't know.

^Getting to stage 9 with decent times will get you that - later stages give more per time remaining than earlier ones.

Ok, I'm done with this game for the week. I want to keep this tournament fun, and it's got to the point where playing a single round enrages me. I only ever do really well and get terrible luck, or do terrible and get really good luck. I don't want to put a bunch of attempts in to get both.

Depending on how I feel I may record an attempt or two, as well as do a small strategy writeup at the very end of the week, but I don't feel like it now.

Let me rephrase a bit.

It's not just the score itself - it's the fact that, before that very attempt, I had only ever made it to stage 5.  And my second-highest score (not written here because I got my top score in the same overall play session) is about half of my highest score.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Well ideally with a speedrunning tourney, people would see how awesome the game is and then want to do a real run for SDA. Which someone could do with Cameltry lol.

BoltR's very shmups.com-like behavior has securely ensured himself a position on the A team though.

Anything about shmups.com scores I heard from Mike.

playing for score != playing for fun Wink

That's actually not a very uncommon phenomenon. A couple of STGT weeks, my best score blew my previous best score out of the water.

Also, I'll add your training and beginner scores if more people add theirs, otherwise a table with like 2 entries probably isn't worth it, I'm sad to say.

Looking at the scoreboard I guess I should start using black steel.  I might be getting over the control frustration enough to use it.

I didn't realise you were still keeping track of expert so i'll post what I had for that too. Could have sworn I had a higher score, but I can't find the screenshot so I guess it didn't happen.

Enhasa: then we're all talking about the topic with three posted scores.
I asked initially because it didn't seem like enough to make a comparison by. <_<

AquaTiger: well, stage 5 is also a bit of a hangup, and once you've figured out the "solution" you're basically clear until stage 9-10.  That's how it goes in my experience, anyway.

Is it wrong that I look at the screenshots and read "TODAY'S AUTISTIC PLAYERS"?

That was an extremely lucky run; my previous best was around 60,000.  I think I know where I'll be this week in the charts.

This run featured a decent (but certainly not great) stage 9, just bad luck with the boxes there.  Luck elsewhere was fantastic, I finished stage 7 with like 86 seconds left.
I have no solution, but i admire the problem.

At the end of stage 8, I believe if you're going fast enough you don't need to go around the little pegs by the goal. I've hugged the wall and got right into the goal (when entering from the right side).

Also, I think the key to doing extremely well at this game is to roll the marble along the edges of the course.

Couldn't imagine playing it again but I hadn't tried a different ball. Got a nice bit of time stored up but it all disappeared on world 7 somehow. If I was willing to put the effort in I've realised I could do almost decently. Ah well...

For anyone interested, i've put up a replay of me doing 460k. with Mame32++.
I also have a replay of the 490k one, but i sucked a lot there, it was just luck.

FAQ:
Q: How to open the replay?
A: Put it somewhere, select camelty and click on File -> Playback Input.
Q: It won't play?
A: You need Mame32 Plus! Plus!, Camelty US Version YM2610, also maybe a .trc file in your replay folder, just record your own replay and take that one.
Q: Did you use save states? Cheats? Slowdowns?
A: No
Q: Avi?
A: Takes forever to upload, but maybe, if some people can't open the replay.
Q: How did you get all 3 +3sec boxes in W2?
A: Don't know ^^
Q: Isn't it bad to take the end question mark box in W3?
A: Yes.
Q: You suck in W 5? And 9?
A: -.-

Meh. I can't get used to the controls in this game. The way you spin the map ist just... totally weird.
