Could you imagine an expert run?  Shocked I haven't gotten the full game yet, but, there were times when the director would spawn a tank at the bottom of the first set of stairs in the subway.  Sad I really look forward to seeing it whenever it's done. It's super random. In some cases someone tried to run as fast as they could to the end, only to get pwned by a tank or a boss combo, or a witch in front of a door. :/

Pushing is a must! Pushing saves lives.

Assuming that the owner of the thread is going to be running it, he would still need 3 others to do the run with if you were to do a 4 player co-op run.
I would offer to help run it but I'm down in Australia and ping poorly to both US and EU servers which would make it a bitch to play.  If I find any shortcuts in my play I'll make sure to post them but I'd be surprised since most maps are fairly linear and apart from falling out of windows I haven't seen many shortcuts

I think there is a lot of potential in this game.  If nothing else I would expect a run to at least include some damage boosting from Tanks (either into level ending safe zones or say... the second story of the building you get to by raising the lift by the gas station on No Mercy).

I'll be interested in seeing how many appearances the Tank makes in an average run as I know they show up quite a bit more often for me when I'm just trying to play the levels casually and quick.
fuck you i wont do what you tell me
I would participate in a co-op run, but considering where I live, that would likely be an problem (due to lag issues, etc).

in Campaign, if you see a Hunter coming, you should almost NEVER be caught by it.  To hit Hunters away every time (and yes, this can be abused in versus)
1. Press your melee key
2. Swap weapons with Q
3. Repeat until Hunter collides with your infinite melee.

No Mercy tricks I see are:
1. No Mercy Level 1, Roof to pipe to ground (confirmed to work)
2. No Mercy Level 2, Tank boost in the turbine room up to the second floor (unconfirmed)
3. No Mercy Level 2, Jump from office window to ground (confirmed to work, providing a car or something is nearby, and after a tank boost, you may not have much health left) -> sprint to safe room
4. No Mercy Level 3, Tank boost from ground to window/ledge, skipping the lift (though the person who succeeds at this would then have to navigate both the sewers and the hospital entrance by themselves).
5. No Mercy Level 4, somehow manipulate the elevator shaft?  get on top of the elevator?
6. No Mercy Level 5, hold out in the stairs, go outside for Tanks, once second tank is dead, rush to the helipad, chuck a pipe bomb, you win.

I haven't played the other campaigns nearly as extensively (because everyone wants to play No Mercy for some reason, and I always get slaughtered in Dead Air).  However, there are a couple of tricks I can think up.

1. Level 1, Dead Air, perhaps a jump down to the street from when you can see the pawn shop?  It's a very long drop, but I can see it being done if we find some pipes to stand on.
2. Level... 3 I think, Blood Harvest.  Tank Boost up on to the side of the cliff where the bridge would normally fall from

all I can conjure up for now.

The Automatic seems to be the best gun between the Autoshotty and the Rifle, simply because it covers both ranges.  the rifle isn't effected when you're swarmed in a wide open space (the airport), but it's useful if you see them coming.  the AutoShotty can't help you save that teammate that was pounced a mile away, but the rifle can.  The Automatic covers both long and short range, and ammo comes often enough that you shouldn't have to worry too much.

If you go straight ahead (i.e. cross the hallway) after leaving that "Safe" room with the ammo in it on the second floor you enter an office room with two windows.  If you jump out the right window it's incredibly easy to land on a pile of garbage bags which prevent you from taking any fall damage.  I don't think you'd lose much if any time going that route either.

I haven't bothered to look but perhaps garbage bags can be used to avoid fall damage in other parts of the game.
fuck you i wont do what you tell me
by not going into yellow health, it would probably end up being faster doing that, as you maintain running speed.

there are probably garbage bags in Dead Air too.  I'll check when i get there again... if I ever pass the first half of Dead Air Level 3 again. :\
If you're healing as a level ends, it heals you instantly. Works in single player, close the door while holding a medkit and quickly use it and bam, 80 health with 0 time lost.
^does not care for console's
All you need to do to maintain your fastest movement speed is remain above 40+ health. The velocity you move at when your above 40+ by the way is 220. I have played around with it a little bit but I can't seem to move much faster than that.

A small movement technique is ladder strafing where you look up and to a side and climb up and strafe into a ladder. Makes you climb about twice as fast as normal.

One a sidenote.

I managed to boost myself up onto a place, where I waasn't supposed to be today by the use of a mob of infected people.

I simply started pushing jump button repeatedly, and eventuelly I got boosted HIGH into the air, landing on top of the farm or whatever it was.

this is what we need.  definitely.  nice find.  This can easily replace tank boosting, as its not hard to trigger a horde.  I'll test er out.

If you want to practice this, you should start up the game with the -console added, then use sv_cheats 1 on the console and add godmode 1 as well. This allows you to practice this without dying as well. Smiley

I tried copying it a few times, and I also tried using tankboosting - Which is ALOT harder, but it works.

I have a question. When I record a demo of Left 4 Dead the playback is slightly jittery and sometimes the zombie movements look off. Is there an interp command or something to fix this?

If only you could make an HLTV of L4D so you could watch a co-op run.

I dunno if I should be proud of myself or anything but I managed to beat every level on expert by myself, just with the bots. Some were surprisingly easy and you can just rhino charge through, others were murder because I want the bots to stand in certain areas and they prefer to randomly wander off or stand in choke points where I'm trying to put a gas tank or something. On the plus side they're great bait, they have hack-like aim when you get tongued by a smoker, and when it comes to fighting tanks (I always want to call them tyrants...) they're a lot better than random pubbies.

As for weapon choice I think the auto-shottie would be the way to go. Maybe it's just my below average FPS in wide open areas with a lot of zombies but the AR doesn't do it for me. What are you going to do with the AR at distance in a speedrun? Stop and shoot and snipe zombies in the head? That's slow. And it loses accuracy with movement so if you're running you basically have to aim at their pelvis and spray more bullets than you need. Four people with shotguns could just run along their path as everything chasing dies horribly. Four shotguns also = insta-dead tank.

The only level I recall really preferring the AR over the shottie was the dead air finale.

Speaking of finales, for the No Mercy and Death Toll finales I found the best way to complete them with bots was to hold the chaingun like a man. It sounds suicidal but the bots are very good at holding ladders and snipe a lot of the bosses. Every other strat I tried either failed or was insanely difficult compared to just holding the nest of those two levels. On Death Toll I was getting so desperate I even tried backing all the way into the corner of the water itself...that didn't work out too well...

Something similar was Half Life Episode 1 where the demo's were jittery. Valve didn't fix it...

I remember seeing a steam update which mentioned fixing demos for Episode 1 or something. I remember trying a demo out for Ep1 when it first came out and it was nearly unwatchable because it seemed like everything was vibrating. I tried a demo for Episode 2 and it was much better. For L4D it's not really that bad or anything, just sorta annoying -- sometimes it looks normal, other times it's a little off. It seems like a little thing which could be fixed with a command. For example, if you watch HLTVs in CS 1.6 with interp .01 the animations are herky jerky but if you use .1 it's fine.

I prefer the assault rifle because it can get headshots on horde incredibly easy and is pretty good for mowing down a lot of horde.  Usually I will start with the shotgun then pick up the AR later.  A trick I've noticed on the 360 version is that you can melee while you reload.  Just hit reload and start meleeing and you can defend yourself while reloading.  Not sure if you can do anything else or do this in conjunction with the "infinite melee" thing but it's useful in it's basic form nonetheless.

a script bound to turn on swap/melee/swap/melee exists already, I could go find it, but i dont feel like it. Tongue

-I wasn't able to find the helicopter for No Mercy's finale while floating around in the air until it arrived as scheduled.  It could just be me not being able to find it.

-I wasn't able to reproduce a height bump due to the horde... can you tell me how you managed to do it?
-the tank's melee may turn out to be less useful than initially thought.  you don't get significant height unless you jump off of an object, and even then I'm not sure how possible it really is (wasn't able to time it right).
-you can jump off of the horde, and jump ladder off of boomers (if you're above boomers, they love to jump).
-the members of the horde will eventually kill each other if you're above them.
-witches fight witches.  the battles end pretty quickly.
-hunters fight witches as they pass them, then chase after you.
-tanks fight tanks.  takes a while for either one to die.

I would consider the sniperrifle as well.

It can kill up to if not more than 3-4 people in a single shot, if theyre standing in line. I tried testing the sniper on the final level while waiting for the helicopter (aiming at the door, standing on the balcony of the 2nd floor) and it simply tore everything apart.

Not forgetting it has an immense damage output to tanks as well, as long as you hit them.

- The height bump came while I was cornered in the trainstation. I kept on pushing jump, just repeatedly, then I got bumped upon the trainwagon + a little above. Perhaps with a script that makes mass jumps it would be possible. Gonna have to check that one out.

As for the script, I will make one when I get time time. It's quite easy.

Something like bind x "melee;wait;wait;swap;melee;wait;wait;swap;melee"

The reason why you add the waits are because it would mess everything up if you bindspam the melee thingie, so you add the waits to make sure it actually DOES melee before you swap weapons. This is a common thing used in other counterstrike and half-life modifications as well.

There used to be a bunnyhop feature which was something like: jump;wait;wait;wait;strafeleft;wait;jump;wait;wait etc etc.

If you're interested in knowing something about these, you should check out the comments on Spider_waffle's Half-life run, where he abuses the game engine to hell and back.

One of the more interesting things he uses is a bind, that allows him to turn load the laserweapon, turn 180 degrees, shot, turn back again, thus gaining an insane speedboost Smiley

Something I spend alot of time trying as well and found quite useful in halflife deathmatch.

Should be possible.

The HR (hunting rifle) is the worst gun to use on the tank. I'm not sure where this idea that it's good against tanks comes from (I see it a lot on the GameFAQs board although people are starting to come around) but it's actually the opposite. It takes about five mags from an AR, 36 AS shells, or 89 HR bullets to put a tank down on expert. Four guys with shotguns would kill a tank much, much faster than four guys with HRs unless it's a mile away. It may have been better for weapon and game balance if the HR was a tank killer but it's just not so.

If you don't believe me try it out for yourself.

sv_cheats 1
god 1
noclip
nb_delete_all (to delete all NPCs/monsters)
z_spawn tank (shows up where you point your crosshair)

I like to do it on the no mercy finale. Fly to the end of the level and spawn a tank inside the window. If you do it at an angle he'll be stuck and unable to escape, as seen here and here. Shooting him in the head has no apparent effect. The only gun which wasn't reliable was the AR -- sometimes he died exactly after 5 mags, other times it took 10 or 15 more bullets. Kinda weird. But the other two were pretty consistent.

Quote from jam287:

Yeah, I think pretty much everyone should know this, it's a crucial factor. It seems even random baddies online have caught onto to it. Melee in general is game breaking. Four people in a closet meleeing each other = invincible to everything but a tank. I wonder if the developers will end up fixing it or not since so many people use that strategy to make jokes out of the finales and other difficult portions of the game. Even if there's a horn or someone gets puked on people just dive into the nearest room and have one guy up front in melee mode and it's a cinch.

As for the AR vs. auto shottie choice, again, it doesn't matter if an AR can kill at distance since you can't be moving when sniping. Four guys running with shotguns will never have to stop since you can shoot while moving (and it only takes a shell to the chest to kill a zombie instead of 3-5 AR bullets) and everyone can look at every direction to make sure random zombies don't flank. Once you're in a finale maybe one AR would be good to snipe bosses though, depending on the strat.
^does not care for console's
You should use the shotgun for speedrunnning as its the only gun which you can run and gun with...

The hunting rifle and AR lose alot of their accuracy while moving...
The M4 (or M16 i don't know) is not a good idea . The sniper rifle is the baddest idea .
But the best is the autoshotgun  Grin

Well , this game is good but for speedrun is hard with the 3 bots , the hunter , smoker , tank too....

Good luck everyone  8)

When I first got to that part I actually tried that on the console version but I did not think I could make that jump.  Now I'm gonna go try it.

I plan on attempting a single player individual level speed run of this game on the 360 version so that's why I'm hanging around here.  This thread is more popular than the console thread but the same tricks and stuff should still apply, it will just be harder to practice.

EDIT: Yea that jump is not that hard to do at all, but jumping on the 360 version is a bit tough.
fuck you i wont do what you tell me
yeah, the trick for the final part of it (up to the top of the ledge from the side of the building) is that there is a pipe on the side that you can use to gain height off of that sits higher than the box.
