No apology necessary.  I'll just have to reconcile my brain with the concept of patience a smidgeon longer.

Let's see... a nice sixteen second gain on Area 6.  I take it you improved the boss time?

What happened on Fortuna?  Did the Wolf team give you some problems?  I only ask because attempt six was worse here than in either attempt three or four by like twenty seconds.

Long live SF64!
The "Fortuna Maneuver" (I like the sound of that...) totally fell through...  I was kinda out of alignment with them and mis-threw the 1st and 2nd bombs, and the 3rd didn't do much...so basically that time is me just chasing them down like on Venom...

Area 6 kicked butt!  Somehow for the first time ever (like EVER since I started playing Star Fox) I was able to get all 3 tenticles before he disappeared...and I pulled it off both times!

All of redline could be a video by itself... I never thought I'd get a 35:58 on the redline portion of this run.  My minimal redline video was 36:11...

Edit:
The video is on it's way!

First post edited... AGAIN.  Hooray!!

I can't wait to watch this; I'll just be adding it to my list of Psonar runs to examine this weekend.

Btw, I'm glad you made a PR for Katina, too.  I take it you managed not to get distracted by the last waves of enemies and dismantled the core sooner, this time 'round?  (And how did you save three seconds in the Venom escape?  It's a miniscule gain, but a significant one, still.)
Godly.  That's all I have to say.

On Katina, you'll be disappointed to know that I simply did it faster, but still had difficulty timing the core, as will be evident with my score of 270 on that level

...If you only knew the mental battles I have on that level with the mothership...I can control the hatches half decently becaused they are based on how many units you destroy...

The problem is that the mothership follows you!  If you could just watch the radar and fast-forward it, you'd see this balletic dance where the mothershp follows me around and tends to be on top and a little behind me when the hatches open, making it stupidly difficult to get the last hatch when you really want to.  If I could voice my thoughts on the screen....

About the saving time at the end....I'll just suffice it to say I used to be obsessed with Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, Extreme G, and Episode I Racer, so yeah I hugged those corners and crossed my fingers!

Thanks...a lot!

And since you've watched the whole thing and liked it, what do you think about it's quality for being submitted?  Do you think people will say, yeah it was good, but he shouldn't have made those mistakes...or do you think others will share your enjoyment of it if this gets submitted?

EDIT:
Oh yeah, and I made this...which shows my last 3 full runs and then compiles the best times to create a more ideal goal.  The last column shows from which run each of the best times comes from.

Everybody loves Hypnotoad!
From that, it looks like attempt six has no major mistakes, as it's always within a few seconds of the best time if it isn't the best time itself.  FO was by far the biggest error, and even that is only 30 seconds.  It looks as though you've got about 1-1.5 minutes to shave off that time with absolute perfection.

IMO, you should send in attempt 6, but if you want to go for a better one, by all means do it.  Just keep a backup copy of 6 in case you don't get a better run.

Hmmm....

Okay I know I haven't watched the video,  yet, but...  I think you should keep trying.  Lips Sealed

I know this is distinctly odd a statement coming from me; I'd like to consider myself one of your most approbative critics, and I don't think it would be unfair to say I want the best for this run while not insisting on unrealistic perfection.

It's just my impression that another run nearly identical to this without maybe a ten or fifteen second loss on Katina and a properly executed sky high maneuver on Fortuna (which is not only remarkably impressive but usually contributive to a quicker run by thirty or so seconds) would represent the best of what is possible.  I'm certain attaining this 'nearly identical run only better' is ENTIRELY easier said than done. You've an esoteric level of experience with the game now, and I shouldn't flatter myself by imposing a stipulation on your achievement.  But, I think deep down you probably agree with me, and I figured you just needed someone to say the words for you.

As much as I initially wanted you to send in the run, I think you'll regret not optimizing the small sections which experienced difficulty in this latest effort.  Maybe I'll change my mind over the weekend once I've finally witnessed the run; you never know.  (And remember, this weekend will provide you with more gaming time, I presume)  And if nothing else, you're showing general improvement with each attempt, so maybe an even better run will be somewhat natural for you to achieve in the relatively immediate future.

I hope I haven't dampened your excitement or pride.  These are just my own little opinions.

But remember, you can do it, champ.  Wink

Long live SF64!
Thanks so much for the comments guys.  Your encouragement and analysis of my runs has really helped push me forward. Thanks!

I have yet to make another attempt.  I've been practicing Fortuna.  Just tonight while folding laundary I watched the rest of my run on VHS.  Just to be objective about it, it's a greater show of skill than I thought.  I don't think any verifier who saw the last 5 minutes could possibly reject it.  I think all but like 3% of the whole run is done very well, but Area 6 boss and Star Wolf was just insane above all else.

However the only really truly groundbreaking trick in the whole run is the sky high trick in Fortuna, and I'd love if that went perfectly on the published run.  Every Star Fox 64 run that's been done so far (Actually...just TSA, StrangenessDSS never posted a minimal, and SuperCoolAI did Katina in stead) has a hard time on Fortuna and I'd like to show the world how it's meant to be done...by the way you may have missed this little jewel on just how I'll do fortuna: Fortuna v.4.  That's a 3:07!

So yeah, next contigeous 2 hours I get I'll make another attempt.  I have to remind myself that a no death run by itself is still a difficult thing to do.  How awesome would it be to get a run that you watch and say, wow, I don't think that really is improveable!

Random things I noticed were that the Sector Y boss went kinda sloppy, but the Aquas boss was perfect (very hard) and the Zoness boss went very smoothly.  Sector Z I don't know how I hugged the edge of the level as close as I did without geting U-turned!  Titania came out on top with some pretty cool sequences.  Corneria's Attack Carrier will please any even remote Star Fox fan....

....hopefully I'll have all that and more in the next week!  Thanks again for the comments.  Looks like I do indeed have a minute or so to shave off!  Don't forget I lose 10 seconds in Sector Y and 10 more seconds during the brain.  Then there's 15 more seconds to get from Katina at least.

These are just random thanks and comments.  Btw I'm getting more consistant at setting Fortuna up, but I've still got the perfect the approach on Star Wolf from beind so that I can shoot down all four Star Wolf just before they split up!

Wish me luck!

Well, good luck.  Can't wait for the result!  Grin
Long live SF64!
Well, I've decided that my 1:24:51 will do just fine because I need to be done with this run.  I only had lots of time to work on it because of the things I pushed aside, and I didn't do so with much care.  My life became a balance of work, school, girlfriend, and speedrun, and things like food, sleep, spirituality, and responsibility kinda got cut out due to my obsessive nature.  Insipid politely called it diligence, but SMK had me pegged as being a bit overboard.

Upon having a conversation with a friend I dropped the speedrun so abruptly I wondered if I was going to submit it, but that's crazy talk.  Of course I'll submit the run, if anything, because of those of you who invested your time (or at least page views) into the run who deserve to see the result of your labor and interest.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the run.  The mistakes are fairly localized making most of it a real treat!  Of course the run to be submitted is available through a webcam preview, but I know crisp graphics and stereo sound will make it loads more enjoyable!

I'm about to email Radix concerning my 100% SS submission.  Why haven't I done so already?  Well I got an email from Mr. Pflug about my minimalist run, and I've written comments and will be mailing it soon!  After I get that mailed and get comments finished for that, I'll start emailing him about the next one.  The rate of runs being posted lately tells me that Radix and Nate may be finally making more progress.

In case you're wondering, my withdrawal from further optimising this run has nothing to do with TSA's retirement.  I made the decision not to do any more speedrunning and then got on Sunday night to find TSA retiring and Trihex's topic about speedrunning being depressing!  I thought wow, we're dropping like flies!  No, I simply need to get back to what's really important.

For me, making gaming a public competition with organization, strategy and community was just too good and I went overboard with it.  Realistically I have like an hour a night to go from one save point to the next in an RPG or something.  I don't see this lifestyle changing either.  I usually have zero time for games during a full-time school semester, and after college I'll likely get married and then it'll be like a few hours a month of gaming.  I don't mean to depress any of you hardcore gamers and speedrunners out there, I'm just stating what's best for me.

I hope I've done this run justice and I'll continue to update regarding submission status.  I guess the current queue time is like what...1-3 months?  We'll see.

Feel free to continue asking questions or commenting.  I'd love to see how many people are interested in seeing this.  I have like 5 for sure, but I know there's people watching the topic who haven't posted...Well, strategizing is over, post as a guest, I don't care, I just want to see who's interested!

I'm interested.  I just never have anything constructive to add, so I post rarely.  I like what I see so far.

Sweetness, thanks for the support

Sorry if the discussion got so longwinded and crazy you didn't feel like posting...that's mostly my fault

Yep yep yep!
I'm definietly interested, as I've been following this topic for a while, but I'm not experienced enough with the game to have justified my posting.

Haha; see Psonar?  I told you they were there.  Wink

Psonar, I empathize for you.  You don't have to explain yourself; you've accomplished far more with this game than I think anyone ever seriously considered possible.  Oh, so you didn't break 1:24:00... who cares!?  I'm sure the run is more optimized than some of our most treasured demos on the site, anyway.

Although, I'll be sorry to see you post so much less often.  And now there will also be a void in the Newer Consoles forum.  Haha.

Don't worry about disappointing anyone.  It's fairly customary to see a few runners become overwhelmed or reprioritize in the fall months once school has once again consumed such a significant portion of their time. I never entirely comprehended how you were able to maintain the work you were consistently achieving almost each and every night, even after you provided a breakdown of your schedule.  Though, I similarly neglected various other burdens in life for my Condemned run, and I wouldn't probably do so, again.

Typically, I manage a balance by only performing a speedrun every two or three months (I've completed six, so I guess that's about right).  You, on the other hand, finished and recorded (plus analyzed with quite a meticulous eye) several runs, three of which are probably destined to earn famed places in the prodigious library of SDA... in the same month.  Like I once said before, good-freaking-job.

I hope you enjoy your rest from speedrunning, but I hope to see you return someday when sufficient time is much less elusive.  Though, life is currently presenting you with plenty of obligations, it seems, and it certainly should never be ignored.

I hope to still see you providing your expertise in threads now and then, but even if you don't, I think I can safely say you've earned a nearly irreplaceable spot or two among the archives, so enjoy it with pride.

Psonar, I still have to say your work and dedication to this run was amazing.  As Insipid said, you have definitely earned a spot in the speed run community with this work, and proven yourself to be a master runner.  Enjoy retirement, although I definitely hope you'll once in a while break out to have some fun and play some fast games! Smiley
Long live SF64!
Wow, all I have to say is thanks a lot guys!  I'm sure I'll at least stop in to follow up on comments and look for new runs.  Actual running takes so much time that there's just no telling if I'll ever run anything else.  Star Fox 64 is my game!

I've emailed Radix and I thought I'd let folks see a .txt of the emailI sent comments for the minimal run and asked about 100% and Redline.  Hopefully I can send all of them at the same time.

If I'd known about SDA in high school there's just no telling what would've happened!  When I did find speedrunning (like many others...) Marshmallow was my instant speedrun hero for running almost all of my favorite N64 adventure games.  I don't know anyone else who simply ran long strategic single segments of nearly every game they owned!

Ok, well now I'm completely done with the game.  I hadn't figured out what I was submitting for the redline category.  Having the redline portion of my 100% run be 35:48 I felt a redline run without medals aught to be faster than that to justify it as a good run!

This took some doing and I decided to do Expert Mode in the end.  I finally recorded an Expert Redline of 35:30 just a few minutes ago and I'm now finally done running Star Fox 64!

Thanks so much for the posts, your support is very...uhm... supportive!  No, really!  Grin

Forgive my curiosity, but any one else looking forward to the Expert All Medals run?
100% runs=great to watch
I'll surely watch it when it finds a way to the main page! Grin  Congrats on finishing things out...go have a good meal or something. 8)

Well I was going to wait until I hear more from Radix, but I'll go ahead and post what I know about something that's come up.

As it turns out a Single Segment run may not contain resets.  My 15-medal run must contain 2 resets in order to collect all 15 medals in a single playthrough.  The problem is that SDA cannot prove that it was a single playthrough.  If I recall the FAQ says that any time a save process or reset takes place, the run becomes segmented.

That means that (after I get word from Radix) I'll send my 1:24:51 VHS tape to Nate and he'll have to chop the segments apart and spend 3 times as long preparing the run because it's now technically 3 segments.  I'm a bit frustrated, but I kinda saw it coming at the same time.  Basically I want the run to be single segment, but the game doesn't support such a run, so I'll just have to state in my comments that I did all 3 segments in one playthrough using resets and leave it at that.

Any thoughts on the matter from anyone?  Is there any alternative but to just accept that it's in the rules?  Radix has made exceptions before, but I kinda doubt it this time.  Of course I always have the option of hosting a Single Segment version of it on the archive myself.

On the bright side the total time for the 3 segments would be 1:22:36 (some control loss time gets removed), and downloaders could have smaller downloads and start watching while the other parts are loading still, etc.  That and a challenger actually running in 3 segments would still be hard pressed to beat my time perhaps....

What do you all think?
Existence as you know it is over
that works too. I'm not doubting the single-segment part.
