Long live SF64!
Hmm....as an almost arcade-like challenge, the fastest time to get 999 hits in Training would be quite a feat...

For your suggestion, Insipid...there would need to be some other arbitrary requirements besides just getting all 100 rings...maybe have 100 points before all-range-mode (barely possible I think?), and then kill the ace fighter as soon as he appears...then having a 150 point goal or something would be good... any ideas anyone?  Anyone else think they are interested in doing this since I haven't touched the game since I finished recording?

It would need testing and I'm busy working on a Mario 64 music video... a challenging first for me.

Any thoughts on a Training Mode 100% Speedrun?  Oh, and on Expert of course.... yes! there is Expert training mode! Ah, the ironic beauty....

There sure is; wasn't it an unintentional inclusion in the game, iirc?

I hadn't thought about 999 kills; I just assumed that would take a god-forsaken eternity (which, last time I checked, it would).  Well, how many enemies are there before the all range mode portion?  If there are 100 exactly, then our ideas are the same.  If not, I was suggesting killing everything previous to the all range mode only so that the specificity of the arbitrary rules would be easier to discern.  I guess you could go for an arbitrary number, but if that number (let's say 100) is less than the total possible, I would imagine one could put forth the extra effort necessary to kill them all (and 100 can't be far from the actual number, anyway), especially if the run is labeled "100%."  If the run is just a speedrun to 999, then enemies could be skipped if we determined it would be quicker to kill the all range enemies, instead, but I can't see how any wouldn't be quicker to kill on your way than to wait for the maladroit hordes at the end.

I did a brief practice session; you obviously cannot boost the entire time.  There are a number of walls, although, in my practice, they were pretty well synchronized with my boosts, but there are also required flips one would need to perform for rings.  Most of the enemies are turret-based on the ground, so unlocked charged shots would work best for those.  The flying ones should conveniently be in your way; if you wanted to make a video of high score, you could also pursue these with unlocked charges.  Btw, what's with that freaking bear??

Of course, we're going to face quite a challenge getting this on SDA, anyway, so high score runs are probably not encourageable (unless 999 becomes the mininum kill count for a "100%").  And yeah, expert mode only.

Chances are, this will just be for fun, but I'd still love to see it, myself.  Smiley

Too bad SDA doesn't measure time in such units or we'd know if it qualified... maybe I can google a conversion factor...

Still nothing from Radix, but I'll continue to send him epic tails of my infinite patience (not really, well kinda).

Just thought I'd give the topic a bump.  If any newcomers, lurkers, or newly interested folks have questions or comments, please feel free to post them!

Various practice videos and attempts at the final video are posted on the first post or via the link in my signature.  I warn that they are low quality digital camera videos, but are very watchable.  The 40-minute or less videos are much better quality than the final attempts which were recorded with a webcam (well, and VHS, duh).  The run I'll be submitting is available at the bottom of the first post.

I won't try too hard to resurrect my topic, but since the whole thing happened in the month of September, I thought some folks might not have seen it yet...

that was pretty much the progression of expressions that i had during this video.

...no really thanks for the continued support!  While I'm not available for mad lovemaking, I am surprised by the positive reaction to the run... hmm, it's time to say something to Radix again... I'm sure there will be even more reactions when it finally goes up and you don't have to watch the webcam special: "Epic Space Battle of the Ethereal White Blobs!"

Thanks for being patient and supportive!

Supercool, if you had NTSC would you be challenging my times? You mentioned something of the sort on the General board...

Radix has passed the verification reins over to Uyama, don't know about contact information though (still says page Radix regarding that)

Aaahhhhh.....

I'm catching up on the "General" developments regarding Mike Uyama.... I'll re-direct my litany of happy PMs then... maybe between him and nate it can be approved for submission...

I don't think there's any actual issue for Radix to need to approve since Mike is now verifying... and I already have Nate's address for sending off the minimal run, I'm just lazy and want approval for all 3 so I can send them all to Nate together... I never got approval on the 100% or redline categories, though I figure Mike can answer to that now... gotta grab lunch, but I'll PM him before the day is out... thanks for the heads up Matrix!  I've been less frequent around here... I'm trying to cut back... I'd gotten rather spammy there for a bit... 20 posts a day isn't so healthy for me... I will certainly do what's needed to get the run posted, that much is certain!

Maybe things will happen quicker with the additional help of Mike... I'm glad to hear it!

Hi there, just wondering if you intend on improving your run.

Hi there, just wondering if you intend on improving your run.

Nope!

Not only am I pretty happy with it... I managed to make short work of destroying the rest of my life for the month that I obsessed over this run.  Believe me, I'm glad to be done!

It's like it sent out a shockwave that literally affected everything else.  Folks often say video games don't get in the way of things, but they really can if you're not careful.  It's knowing what's important and being able to put it down that are the key.  I generally call my self passionate, but with this I was obsessive, and so I'm glad to put it down.

So I'm trying to relegate myself to things that are easier to put down.  I over-dedicate myself to a lot of things that I do, and being a perfectionist and doing a speedrun takes a lot of time and dedication... well for me I obsessed and would spend hours working on it night and day.  I was almost always either playing, watching my videos, compressing/posting videos, posting long posts in this topic (if InsipidMuckyWater can't keep up with any single person's progress then that's saying something... I don't think he ever got on a single day in September where I didn't have an update or two or three...)  All that said, I did it and I'm done improving it... I think the first 10 pages or so are all on run development and are largely InsipidMuckyWater, Petrie911, SMK, and myself.  Since you asked, I'm guessing you don't feel like topic hunting though, so feel free to ask any other questions you have and I'll give my off the top of my head answer!

If anyone wants to improve this run, believe me I will be one of the first in line to download it!  I will be shocked and amazed to find another Star Fox runner willing to challenge me on my unique favorite game, and I will gladly sit back and watch myself get owned if that's the case.  That also goes for my improvement of TSA's original run and my redline run.  I'm done.

I haven't played the game since I made the final recording of the 35:30 Expert Redline run which was only because I felt that any redline run must be faster than the redline portion of my 100% run... that'd just be stupid to submit anything slower than the corresponding section of the 100% run when the same runner is submitting both runs at the same time!  So yeah, that was actually really hard and got little attention, but I finally did it anyways.  My redline run will be even faster than the finale of the 100%...yay!  If there's enough demand I'll make some more digital camera videos of my any% and redline.... or they can be surprises when they are finally posted....

So anyways, hope that answers your question and then some!  I'm sorry that the time is as low as it will go... the 100% run will actually be posted as segmented because of the resets and the posted time will be more like 1:22:30 or something... I can't remember.  Going below 1:25 with SS timing was a true pleasure that I am happy with.

That and I love the symmetry of my times... I've got 1:24:51 and 25:41 which are kinda flip-flopped of each other... and then for a while I had my redline at 35:53 which is also neat... I actually considered manipulating the final scores to be funny numbers, like the redline could've easily been 777 I think... but I thought of it too late to incorporate it... doing that on 100% would've been insane, but oh well... I'm not that crazy!

Any other questions are welcomed, and feel free to check out the videos in my sig or the first post for a look at what's been going on.  Btw I also update the details page of my archive.org page linked in my signature, so besides this post and my signiture, that's a more informative, up to date, single body of info regarding the run (and all the videos of course, since that's the point of the description...)

Ok, I'm ending this post and I'm going to find something to keep me from feeling the lonely need to keep typing! bye!
Long live SF64!
Yay, Mike Uyama replied promptly saying that while he doesn't know the game that well he'd leave any further decision-making to the verifiers.

PM from Mike Uyama...

Before you can send your run to Nate, we will need five things from you in a text file:

-Game name
-Your real name (you can include nickname too)
-run category (SS or not, %, difficulty, etc.)
-date completed
-comments

So yeah, now comes crunch time where I have to write all those comments I've been putting off like mad... Don't worry, I've already got the meat of the comments for the any% run, and a simple viewing of the other two will refresh my memory enough to write about them.  I plan for them to be long, detailed, witty, and enjoyable.  We'll see what happens...

I've also PMed Mike about the comments asking how I may include URLs, horizontal rules, numbered lists, bullets, etc as I've seen in other comments.  I'm hoping I'll be able to do some organization along those lines to break them up better.  If anyone knows standard procedure for this, feel free to let me know with a post or PM.

Unfortunately this has come at my busiest point in the semester because I have a big test next Wednesday and other whatnot going on, including a busy weekend.  So, now I have to ask folks to be patient while I finally write the comments!  Hopefully the run be up within a month or so at worst, who knows.  All I have to say is thank you Mike Uyama!  Radix has called in the cavalry to come and get stuff moving faster! Woohoo!

That's good; these really help organize comments in an easily digestible fashion.  I know deutsch-joe did the same thing for DK64 (though, they've since been replaced), so you might ask him.  I'm guessing Mike will let you do whatever you want, though, as long as it's constructive.

Amen to that.  And take your time with the comments; there's probably plenty to say.

And btw, yes, it IS saying something when I can't watch videos as fast as you can produce them.  That's some dedication.  Wink

Indeed.  I finally have a finished draft of my minimal run comments and I'm working on the "general" section of the 100% comments.  Level comments are pretty easy.  It's finding just the right words for the acknowledgments and general comments that takes time.

To anyone interested mike told me I'm welcome to include html tags in my comments.  I'm taking the time to do some pretty thorough tagging to save them time in processing the run.  It might take a bit longer overall, but I guess it's my way of helping SDA.  If I can do some of the work by tagging lists, hyperlinks, horizontal lines, bold text and such, then I'll do it.  Those who've followed the thread know that there are a lot of charts and data behind the development of the run and I'm making hyperlinks ot a lot of that stuff in the comments, so you can imagine that takes some work.

The biggest thing is just going over them lots of times to make sure they sound like I want them to.  It's really sad when the minimal run comments took longer than the run.  That certainly won't be true with the 100% comments though.  They are going much quicker overall.  I just had a midterm so I made no progress for quite a while.

Wait, I can hear it now..."but you had plenty of time to make an SDA Awards voting tool with Excel, make an uber post in an OoT thread and post all over the General boards..." ...yeah, well, it's SDA vs. notepad ... which would you chose?

Hey! Time for an update perhaps?

Yes I have actually been very diligent with comment writing and I'm still not done!  I've finished the comments for the any% run and they are about 3500 words!  That should give you a feel for the depth of my comments.  I've currently done the Acknowledgements, General Comments and all Level Comments up to Sector Y, and I'm over 7000 words.  That leaves a few levels of 100% (maybe I'll get them tonight or tomorrow) and then the redline run.  I'll likely go easy on the redline comments.

Sorry for making them so incredibly long, but I'm just long winded like that.  I hope they are enjoyable when the runs are posted!   I've basically learned enough html from looking at the source code for SDA's pages that I'm submitting the comments in full html (it will still be guised as a txt file, but it's fully tagged to just change .txt to .html to view it as html).  This lets me ensure that all the formatting and links are working properly before I send them off to Mike Uyama.  I'm sure they'll be glad I did some of the work for them!

I actually made a hacked version of the SDA game page for Star Fox 64 with the SDA styles and everything.  That lets me see exactly what it will look like before sending it.  Sorry for taking so long, but I'm holding these comments to the same standard as the run itself, so be glad that you'll get some good comments and hold on just a bit longer!

If you regret my uber-long comments feel free to let me know... your thoughts on the run are always welcome and appreciated!

Edit:

100% comments done... ended up at just over 10,000 words...    Roll Eyes

Redline comments should start today and end tonight since I'll have to watch the actual VHS to finish them.... not much longer...

Awesome news!  Uyama probably finds verifiers before accepting the run, so that's one more step of the process taken care of!  If you have been around here for a good while and feel competent to verify this run, don't post it here, just PM Mike.  I remember reading somewhere about verifiers being anonymous.... (yeah right...)

Not sure what you're refering to, but I am sure I'm not listening to it!  I don't need to listen when I can see my run in the verification thread!  Hmm, now you've got me hungry...

Sorry for the wait, not much longer (and yes I'm going to say "not much longer" in like every post I make!  ;D)

Wait, no, Fluffy sent me a link to a video on youtube with the song... w o w . . . youtube has introduced to the world a new medium of absurdity... I'll just let you search it instead of posting the link...

Star Fox 64 has left the Verification List!

Apparently it is now either being prepped for verification (not sure what that entails) or it is actually being verified or something.  At the rate the queue moves these days (slightly faster than the average traveling velocity of an unladen African swallow...), there's no real way to guess which number you are.

Anyways, it's one tiny step closer, so I gladly bump my topic in anticipation.  I'm really looking forward to seeing what my run looks like after Nate has given it his special treatment.  My TV screen sucks, so I don't actually know how good the quality of my VHS recording is, but I'm looking forward to finding out along with the rest of you!

If anyone is seeing this thread or noticing this run for the first time, feel free to post questions or comments about it!  As I post updates about this Expert 15 medal run, just know that the same is true for my any% run and expert redline run.  I didn't want to bump/juggle 3 topics with the same info, and this topic is the only one that is really "my" topic, so the updates will go here.

I'll stop rambling - woohoo, I hope it gets posted before December maybe!
Yep yep yep!

Fixed.

It seems that the more well-known games and better runs get posted faster, and what with the crazy speed new runs are being posted at recently, how very well-known this game is, and how amazing your run is, I'd say chances are high that it'll be posted sometime soon.
