Wow, I completely forgot about the Seventh Day Adventists or whatever.  We should call ourselves Speed Runs Archive, anyway ... and then we'd only be confused with technology/educational crap according to the top few Google returns.  just kidding

Yeah, I was actually hoping at least Nate would make it.  I'm glad to hear Uyama has shown interest, as well, but I figured on Nate being the most likely since he lives in Texas and because we're really going to need a tech person.
Not a walrus
Eh, the tech stuff is "simple" unless we're doing any races, and even then it's only slightly worse.
If I am available that week I'm likely in for the marathon.  I will know whether I'm available shortly.

I am in Salt Lake so I can go with the Utah group.  I have a car I can drive if I go.

Games I can run:
Quake 2 - Easy (~35 min real time) or Hard (~40 min real time)
Age of Empires 1 and 2 - Might be a little long/repetitive to run the whole thing, so maybe just tutorial campaigns or something
Age 1 - Tutorial (~1hr real time) or Whole game (???)
Age 2 - Tutorial (~20 min real time) or Whole game (~3.5 hr real time)
I'd also be open to picking/choosing particular levels that are actually interesting to run to cut down on time.  This could be up to request or donation.

I know I've talked with Kirua about Quake 2/3 as well.  If he can make it to the marathon we can do a quake2 race and he can do quake3.  I wonder if anyone can be convinced to run/race quake1 and quake4 to complete the series?  I wonder if this series would be better placed in the bigger winter marathon?  (I'm a little less likely to be able to make that myself)
Formerly known as Skullboy
Please put me in the interested column. I won't be able to make a definite decision for  a while though, so I'm not going to list any games I'd like to run until I know for sure that I can come. Thanks for taking up the challenge of a summer marathon. I hope it all works out.
Moo! Flap! Hug!
Quote from Zeupar:
Why? It is being planned by SDAers on the SDA forums, and SDAers will make it possible. I don't see why you would change its name just because no SDA staff is present.

If there are no SDA staff present or supporting the marathon, you could always call it an SDA Community (Speed Demos Archive Community) marathon.  The TSG community does that all the time.

Cheers

This might be fun. I'll think about going. This time I can promise I won't go way far over time on Halo.

Payback time? <_<

Also, love Quake 3, but it'd be a horrible choice unless there's something I don't know about the game, like being able to manipulate spawn points on top of spawn prediction. I don't really see how a game against an AIPC can be speedrun.
Quits halfway
Hmm, I could probably afford making it out to this, would it be possible to arrive the 27th and head back the 2nd? Saves $50 that way.

I'd be able to run at least Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Harmony of Despair. The other games I'm good at are probably too boring.

1-Up!
Quote from cyghfer:
anyway, i hope at least one or two SDA staff members will be able to make it out there, as it will seem odd if no one involved with the site's maintenance is visible during the event.

From the looks of it, this probably won't happen.  Breakdown and I have already said we either can't or most likely won't be able to make it.  I was under the impression that Mike was in the same boat but I could be wrong there.
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
^I believe nate has an interest, and Uyama said he might show up, but he doesn't want to make it happen (he'd rather come as a participant than as Fearless Leader, which, in setting this up thus far, I can completely understand... and he's done this twice, sheesh!)

I may actually not have a ride for the marathon, since the person who was going to be my ride recently had her car breakdown (a nasty incident involving a large chunk of ice and a low undercarriage, as I understand it).  Hopefully, it'll be fix'd by then, or people will be charitible with their vehicles.  I'm sure we'll make due regardless, just one more thing to have sorted out by then...

Finally got ahold of the guy at DU, and he said that it'd be a few weeks before he'll know if he can get us the space.  Hoping we can, but still looking around...
My feelings on The Demon Rush
UA is right, tech stuff is simple. Even races aren't too difficult. The only reason why Nate and Lag.Com were the ones doing the races is because they were the only ones who knew exactly which cables went where. You just need someone with a decent computer.

Aitamen: That's a big maybe. First, I need to a get a new job ASAP, second, I would have to know if I have vacation time. Honestly, like Flip said, it's not very likely I'll come. Poxnor's idea is good, if none of the SDA staff can make it (or only Nate makes it), then you can call it a SDA community marathon.
gamelogs.org
or just call it an sda marathon anyway. sda has always been about the runners, not the admins.
Yes, a worthless avatar riding my posts.
No idea what I'm doing this summer, but I think I can make Denver. If I'm available I'll strongly consider coming out to this since I'm usually on the west coast.

I'll run Faxanadu for sure. Other possibilities are Final Fantasy Legend, The Guardian Legend, Super Turrican and Willow. If I could somehow learn the glitched route for Super Mario Land 2 that would also be amazing.
sda community marathon?

who cares if the staff isn't there? (not that i dont love you guys)
interesting - talking only to us because we know who you are but not wanting to weigh in under your own name for others to see. very well. Wink

my view on this is that sda marathons without "official" (very problematic word) backing from sda administration should still be able to call themselves sda marathons so long as they do nothing to give viewers (the people watching the stream) the impression that sda marathons are inconsistently desirable to watch. basically i'm concerned about turning people off. be awesome (awesome according to the viewers) and you get to be an sda marathon. less awesome marathons are not sda marathons.

it may be useful to differentiate the "original" marathon from spinoff marathons. first there was star trek, and then there was star trek: the next generation. one problem with this idea is that both "official" marathons to date have had subtitles and have been widely known as such. how can "unofficial" marathons be differentiated as such without being stripped of their association with sda?
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Good points all around, as long as if you have plenty of SDA members atttending the marathon, the marathon can definitely be an official SDA marathon.
berserker status
Just in case my first post went unread--it's safe to say you can put me on the 'interested in coming' column.  -_-

Also, I support this being an "official SDA marathon".  As Nate said, as long it's awesome then I think we'd rep SDA well enough.  Hell, if Seth Glass goes then there's no worries come on now.  Also:  we should consider what charity you want to fundraise for.  I'll look around for something dear to me, maybe something to do with simple water filtration systems for developing countries or something.  But that's just my dos centavos.
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
Riskbreaker Y: Yeah, I have you in my text note, just forgot to update you to the first post, my bad.  You are indeed accounted for.  Fixing shortly.

No worries guys, we'll be worthy of having SDA in our title, methinks.  I have a great group interested/coming, and I've yet to see a group of dedicated gamers get together and not have something awesome come out of it.

For charities, the World Food Programme has been suggested by two people, so if people think it's a good cause I'll contact them and see what we need to do for it.

I'm still having trouble finding a good place, but there have been some ok suggestions thus far, which is unnerving.  without knowing how many people are coming, I don't know how much per person it is, nor do I know how much rooms would cost near/around these places if sleeping on the premises would be inconvenient.
Sonical!
By the way, who did come up with the awesome idea of a marathon to raise funds for charity?
Waiting hurts my soul...
Not sure who started the trend, but it wasn't us. We just picked it up from the speed gamers since it seemed honorable enough.
OK, I've checked my availability and I can come that week.  And I really really WANT to come, but there's still no absolute guarantee.

Carcinogen:  Kirua is working on a Quake 3 nightmare run right now.  His run for the site is supposed to be deathless (which would just be sick) but I can't imagine a single segment at a marathon being deathless.  He claims on about 50% of the levels he can keep from dying just about every time (or something like this).
Fucking Weeaboo
I may be able to come, but it depends on when Sogen Con will take place, since it's usually around that time (I'm getting worried since I've yet to hear a date or any major news in a while, and it's already February).  Also depends on finances.  Plenty of stuff I could do.
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
I have to drop out, due to a lot of stuff in the rest of my life holding me back.  I lack the resources, time, and personal balance to make this happen, and I'm deeply sorry for any hopes I've hurt or whatnot.

While some marathon may be better than no marathon, I think a half-assed or improperly built marathon may be even more destructive, and I'd never wish to hurt SDA, so I'm backing out now.  Hopefully, it's early enough that someone else wanting to put together a summer marathon still has a chance to, or something along those lines.
Everything's better with Magitek
Sorry to hear that, Aitamen, but real life stuff is important too.  Thanks for being willing to give this a try, though. Smiley

I don't know how others would feel about this, but Denton and I would be willing to host a marathon at our house here in Utah.  We were able to fit about 30 people comfortably for Thanksgiving, so I don't think space would be a problem.  We've got 5 bedrooms plus a mother-in-law apartment, and if we needed more sleeping space we could set up some tents in our backyard or something (assuming this is in summer).  Having it here would reduce the cost, because we wouldn't have to pay to rent a place or for hotels; we might just ask people to pitch in some money for food.  We also live about 20 minutes away from the Salt Lake City international airport.  I'd like to know what people think about this.  If you don't like it or would rather do it somewhere else, I won't be offended.  I just thought I'd make the offer, because I know we have a lot of space here, and I'd be willing to put this together.
Waiting hurts my soul...
I think it's a great idea. I was thinking about trying to rent a place for a week in LA to host a marathon, but someone opening up their house definitely reduces costs. That's really great of you to offer. Only question would be, how's your Internet? Pitching in for food should be no problem if people were already planning on paying for a place to sleep.
