I'm going to rent a place, as I live in a 1b apartment with my gf, and I don't think I could comfortably accommodate anyone, really (I may have a few people crash at my house to cut some costs for people, if I need to... No promises to anyone yet though).
as for how many, I'm expecting maybe 25-35, and planning for more (50) so no one need be left out.
This would probably be a no from me. I definitely applaud the idea, but being as I'm on the east coast, it'd be a bit difficult for me to get to. Not impossible if I wanted to make it happen badly enough, but I think I can better ways of helping the marathon than actually attending.
Echoing Emptyeye's post for the same reasons. I've got to get some wisdom teeth pulled soon so i won't even have money to donate to this thing. Good luck though.
Yeah, I didn't expect many of the east-coast people to be able to make it, for all the same reasons I'm putting this on (Namely, that stuff on the other side of the country is even more prohibitive than usual to attend)
Assuming I'm still in Philly at that time, $400 round trip flight plus whatever else...well, I've had more expensive trips. But with me graduating in April and having no clue where I'll end up, I might end up closer or farther away by summer.
I'm interested in showing up and commentating or running something (though I don't have many skills to offer game-wise), and if I can't I don't mind being a chat mod, but at this point it's an elephant-sized maybe.
I am also one of the many people located in Utah, I would like to attend (very high possibility of coming). I can do VVVVVV in 20 minutes (should be more like 17), could do 100% in 30 minutes or faster (I haven't done this one SS much so I would have to do some practicing for a more accurate time).
I could probably help with the technical side of things as well. I could also bring a slew of consoles, and I also have a couple USB capture cards.
I can't make it for same east coast reasons. That, plus by that time I will not have any time off to use (using it for other reasons during the summer), even if I wanted to go. Good luck with it though. I will stick with the yearly marathon, for now.
I want to know who'll be coming/who wants to come, and who wants/is able to help. I also need to know how many tech-enabled people will be in attendance, because I have no recording equipment of my own, and I need to figure out what's going to be here, so I know what else we need.
Provided someone coughed up a high end desktop computer running 32 bit vista, as far as GETTING the video recorded, I can do that. editing is another story, but that can be done post marathon by someone else.
getting a plane ticket to Denver would probably be doable for me(as is frontier runs a nice ferry service literally form Cleveland to Denver), but then I'd be tapped out. no money for hotels etc.
edit: as for whats NEEDED:
2 computers per TV used at a time, one to stream, one to record. the streamer deons't have to be cutting edge, but the recorder deos.
2 av splitters per TV, one for the 2 computers, and for the TV being played on.
Flash media encoder, VLC, and Av cables. Good internet connection.
that's really all that;s needed for the actually event, (although some better equipment will make it EASIER)*** breaks loose when we try to edit.
Edit2 : also for commentary, that will probably require one more computer and a webcam. since commentary deosn't have to be as HQ as the actual game.
^ I don't know if it'd be any use, but I own a Canon HV20 hi-definition camcorder, which I have used to stream on sites like Ustream on occasion (though, my PC is so crappy, I had to turn every setting down to keep the video fluid). It might make for a good external camera, for wide room shots or something like that, because it's capable of pretty high quality for a comparably inexpensive kind of camera.
I don't have much other equipment. I'll be bringing my Acer Aspire 6930 laptop, but I don't have much on it. It could be a moderator station, if nothing else. I do have some external hard drives as well, though I only have about 400GB left on them; however, I plan to purchase a terabyte at some point, probably before the summer marathon, so if we need storage I could maybe contribute that to the project.
Lol, and oh yeah, I have a butt load of power strips and extension cords, which we'll probably need.

I have a computer that could handle it, but it's 64-bit Win7 and only has a 320gb hdd.

we could probably rent a bigger portable HD.
The problem with 64 bit systems is I Don't know of ANY HDMI or RCA capture device that like to play nice with them. I suppose though by summer maybe someone will have fixed this.
I can bring splitters, my laptop is good enough to stream the commentary, or act as a mod station, but not recording.
the reason the recorder has to be so good, is basically it needs to be recording at AT LEAST 800kbps with no frameskip, 29.95 FPS min at 800X600 minimum rez, more is better on both FPS(60 being ideal) and Rez(bigger the better) and even most dual core 2 gig processors drop frames like they're free at that kind load.
But if nothing else, if someone who can afford good equipment(or we can try and rent it)wants to do that, I'm perfectly capable of hooking stuff and making it work, and monitoring it. just don't be surprised if you have a 700+ gig file at the end of the thing if we run 24/7 recording, esp on commentary.
I am running vista 32 bit, 3 gig ddr2 ram, 2.66 duo core, and ~500GB free space (could be more if I deleted/moved/backed up some other vids) and leaves me with ~35 hours of record time atm. I stream and capture at the same time almost daily. So I think I can cover the game stream. Note about my stream though, I can record the game and game audio, I stream the game and commentary audio. If my second capture card was not trash, I could stream game audio as well. If anyone brings an ez cap, then I can cover one of the systems/tvs just fine. Also, I use the ustream page to stream
I was also talking with nate at the marathon, and found out that if I used a diff codex, I could record more that I am now. So I could look into that and see what I can do on that end.
Other things of note: Food is going to be fairly cheap, as myself and my friend Stancie will be cooking for everyone, if people want. I'm opting to do this to cut down on overall expenditures as much as possible. this (and the menu) is on the table if people want to discuss it.
I have a couple crappy TVs for practice, and I intend to get a decent CRT for myself between now and the marathon. If I find a cheap 26"+ on Craigslist, I might snag that as well, for the marathon/backup/whatever.
Heidman: Awesome, that's a hell of a start, I believe. I've seen your stream, so I know it works. Don't know why I didn't think of that earlier...
Easy Cap. Did not know there was an ez cap. But ya this thing. I just ebayed it and they are dirt cheep, I think I do want another one anyhow. I am also looking into upgrading my PC as well, so my PC is gunna do nothing but get better before the marathon, given the PSU does not crap out on my again...
I can never get the story straight, but if I'm not mistaken, Easy Cap is a rip off company trying to impersonate EZCap's product. Or maybe it's the other way around. I don't know.
Yeah, I bought one of those Easy Caps for trying to transfer the VHS half of a two player speedrun I just completed. Due to several installation issues (which I eventually resolved on my own) I tried to find troubleshooting help from its website. That's when the website started explaining (in very poor English) that I probably have a copycat device. That device being that exact thing you linked to. Anyway, that was my fun little winter annoyance.
The software that came with it was ... balls. But, I guess I eventually got what I needed out of it. Problem is, the transfer lost too much quality, so I just ended up waiting until I flew back to L.A. to transfer the VHS to DVD. I'm hoping the transfer quality is better on live streams.
EDIT: If you do get one of those, you have to go to a very specific website to get Vista drivers for it. Nothing on the official 'site' will help you with this. Anyway, if you need help, give me a shout.
I have an EasyCAP DC60 and I gotta say, the only problem I had was installing drivers on Windows 7. Looking online had me find drivers for it but the audio never worked till Heidman gave me the Vista ones he used. I will say this, the EasyCAP definitely is a good device. I don't know about the other cheap knockoff though.
