just a few relief sites I can found really fast.  Granted though I'll leave it up to everyone how to approach it...

As for the date, again I might be able to make it, just have to check my schedule to make sure I can do it.

Did you seriously just suggest CARE?

Oh man somebody's out of the loop.

Edit: Also that weekend should work for me I think.

between the 9.0 (which is outrageously powerful, Japan has codes for quakes in their construction and it really had no effect)

Not to get too far off topic, but the construction had a tremendous effect. The damage in the region would have been far, FAR more severe if the buildings hadn't been designed to withstand earthquakes. As is, the majority of the damage was caused not by the earthquake, but by the tsunamis. The Fukushima reactor failures happened/are happening because the buildings were "only" designed to withstand quakes up to 8.0. I guess they didn't anticipate being hit by one of the largest earthquakes in recorded human history.

just searched Japan Charities, found bbc and posted what they said.  If there is a bad history with any charities, I don't need to hear about it since I can understand some charities aren't what they crack up to be (or are just hard to cooperate with)

I think he meant the earthquake had "no effect".

Compare this one to what happened in Haiti and you can see the difference being able to use proper construction makes.
SGL Scrublord
I should have clarified, many people assume that much of the  damage is mitigated by the construction (and it certainly did, check out Haiti for an idea), but forget it was tested by a 9.0 and THEN hit with tsunamis. My own personal opinion on causes aside, we need to help them first and foremost. I'll leave the cause/effect stuff to the people who get paid much more than I do to sit and ponder, as I do that on an amateur level Wink

You may be right, I can see how the wording could go either way.

MAS didn't copy paste the full list of charities from the link he provided:
American Red Cross
AmeriCares
CARE USA (lol)
Catholic Relief Services
Church World Service
Direct Relief International
GlobalGiving
International Rescue Committee
Oxfam America
Save the Children
World Vision

Another good one that isn't listed is Doctors Without Borders. However, I will reiterate that some of these charities may not be giving contributions to Japanese relief yet, either because the relief hasn't been specifically requested from those organizations, or because the charities in question have deemed that further contributions will not benefit the relief effort at this time. I do want to make a correction to my previous post - I did a little more research, and the American Red Cross is giving money to Japan now.

view more charities... How the hell did I miss that?!

Anywho, yea, that is a small set to pick from...

Quote from Arrow:
I read something online a few days ago about a lot of the more well known charities (such as the Red Cross) not actually giving any money to Japan relief yet, as the Japanese government hasn't actually requested aid from them. I'm not sure if this is still the case, but it might be something to look into if we go that route.

I've started seeing solicitations for donations to the Red Cross's Japanese relief on other websites like Amazon.com lately, so they're definitely doing something.  I've heard good things about Doctors Without Borders too.

When we're dealing with an international relief effort, I think working with a larger charity organization might make the most sense, since with smaller organizations we'd have to worry about scams or whether or not they can accept foreign currency (especially if they're based locally in Japan).
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Charities: There are a lot of good charities to choose that aren't as large as Red Cross or CARE (geez mas, pay attention) if we want to support a different charity. Also, I also hear Doctors Without Borders is a really good charity, so is International Medical Corps (I don't know if they're doing work in Japan)

Events during that weekend: Well as long as if it's not a huge stream that would take away viewers, then I think we'll be fine.
Intruding N313 and F014
I agree with puwexil that we should help Japan because of the video game industry over there.  It is a perfect match for our marathon.  Another charity to mention is Habitat for Humanity, though I don't know if they will be doing anything over there.

Essentia, I would like to find out if I can bring my Pomeranian.  I am currently figuring out options if I can't.
The Speedrunning Teacher
Gonna throw one more charity possibility into the mix.  The LDS Church (of which both Essentia and I are members of), also takes donations towards helping others in need.  Here is where people are directed on how to donate to the Japan relief efforts in particular.  I know that SDA may steer away from any religious affiliations for obvious reasons, but I can guarantee that any and all donations are going directly to the relief effort in Japan.

It isn't a big deal if you don't want to keep this charity as an option.  The important point for the marathon is that we're doing it for Japan's relief efforts.
Donating to the relief effort in Japan is a great idea Cheesy While donating to research is always a wonderful thing, there's something nice about donations going straight to people in need.

I'd be interested in participating, but I'm not particularly known around here (although I do know Essentia a bit).
I am also in favor of donating to some kind of Japanese relief effort. The new marathon marathon date is also fine. I would also be fine in doing some kind of stream-from-home micromarathon, and would be more than willing to stream any of the games which I am good at.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Zyre: Like you said, I think it's better to steer clear of religious affiliations.

Dunnius: I'm not Essentia, but pomeranians are yappy dogs and might annoy/wake people up.

I'm just going to throw this idea out there - if we decide to go with a charity specifically targeting Japanese relief, maybe we could dedicate our marathon to only running games that were developed in Japan. This encompasses the majority of games people have suggested anyway, although I wouldn't want to deter anyone from going who was planning to, if the only game they were willing to run was not from Japan.

And while you're at it, if the game includes Japanese voice acting, switch it to that.  If you're not concerned about language barriers and own a copy of the game (and can play it), then play it Japanese too. Tongue  I'm sure somebody (like myself) can bring/send out a Super Famicom, a hacked Wii, GCN, etc.

I don't think what we run would really be all that pertinent to the charity.  Doing it for the charity is the important thing.  I don't think anyone from Japan or anyone representing the charity would think the gesture of having a marathon to benefit Japan would be more influential, heartwarming or sincere if only Japanese released games were played.

Let us know when you're sure the date is set in stone, Essentia.
Sea of Green
I agree with donating for the Japanese relief efforts, and ask that we raise money through the charity Doctors Without Borders.
Sea of Green
But the thing is, this isn't set in stone yet. People are just discussing what charities they would like, and there's nothing wrong with that, as you've just said. Even if the funds don't go to Japan I'd still throw my support behind Doctors Without Borders because they are a wonderful charity.

Also, August is five months away, not seven. Tongue
Sea of Green
Essentia has already set the dates, and a delay is really not likely, as making the marathon any later in August would certainly prevent most people (who are college students) from attending. And in case you hadn't noticed, there is still quite a lot of destruction and devastation currently happening in Japan, so even saying six months is fairly inaccurate when, after all is done, it will be more like four or five. But since you want to play devil's advocate I'll suppose I'll let you.
Sea of Green
I don't think I'm being rude, but if I've genuinely offended you then I am sorry.

I didn't say that you hadn't noticed the devastation; I asked if you were aware that it was currently on-going. You seemed to think it was all finished. And never once did I call you heartless or say you didn't appreciate the problems. Am I trying to make you sound like an asshole by saying I still support Doctors Without Borders? I think you are taking this way too personally, and getting this thread off-topic. If you have an issue with me, please feel free to continue it over PM.
