Nice. I just started the Trophy Room part and have a time of 1:32:17. This is largely due to not remembering where one of the ingredients was at, which cost me at least twenty minutes. I also spent a few more seconds to make ten more wiggenweld potions just in case.
I only had to fight the History of Magic rat twice though, at level 8. However, I used a card combo called Snitch Streak which stopped the big rat while I healed and killed the small rats. This made the fight super easy, and might be a consideration. I think I got it from the green deck at the beginning, but not sure because I mashed A through it. The only problem is that Cards are random, and so not able to be counted on. I think I'll have to do some grinding before the troll, as I don't think I'm anywhere near Verdimillious Duo.
Some notes:
-It takes three fights to level up before the first boss.
-The first boss drops Hardened Boots.
-Malfoy drops a Grand Wiggenweld Potion.
-There is a Pepper-Up Potion behind the sphinx right next to Nearly-Headless Nick. Probably saves 3-4 seconds total over ingredient farming for an extra.
-Finally, you don't need the potion recipe to make the potion, just the right ingredients! This removes the trip to pick up the Pepper-up Potion recipe at least. I haven't tried skipping going back to Snape after Herbology, though I figure it's probably a story-event and you can't progress without doing so.
That's all I have for now; hopefully it helps!
Alright, first time completing is 3:03:46. I was aiming for sub-3:00, but this is close enough that I'm happy. A few deaths from minor enemies that I couldn't avoid, once at Big Rat #2, and Voldemort. I died at Voldey because I missed the glitch, and two hits and you're done. The ending boss sequence is so funny and totally worth it though.
I think the combat system is totally glitched now. Either that, or damage operates by when you press A. I was getting so many 0s that it was weird, so I started "testing" by mashing A at different times during battle. It seems that an enemy will do 0 damage when I press A right at the beginning of its animation. For example, if I press A right before it appears that the chickens move their heads, they *usually* do 0. This also seems to apply to other minor enemies, and it worked once on Voldemort at the beginning of battle.

The route is incredibly solid. Good job, Psirockin123.
Good job.
A few notes.
I probably should look at card combos but maybe later.
The rat and Malfoy do not always drop those items so you can't rely on them but they do save time.
That pepper up potion would save time.
And I was thought about the potion thing today but didn't try it. So that saves the one in the library but you still have to go to snaps (I've tried).
Also I get into many fights on the lake using verdimillious and the finish leveling it while getting the snake fangs. Usually only takes a little bit there.

Yeah the glitch is a little tricky to do sometimes but makes it so fun.  And the thing about lowering enemy attacks is something I've been wondering about for years. Anyway thanks for the help. It makes it a lot more fun. And your time will definitely come down fast.
That's supposed to be Snape.
And one more note. The glitch works on the history of magic rat so you can heal and since he attacks first you can skip his attack. This makes it much better.  The other two will still attack though.
Just finished my first run, at 3:54:22 (I'm awful at this game), I'm hoping to get it down though. I was wondering if timing was done in game or in real life?
Congrats. Don't worry my first run was 4 hours. I haven't timed these in real time. I think that would be 4-5 mins longer. So 1:50:53 is game time. I didn't have to reset so this should be accurate.
Is they a video of a completed run anywhere, for some route comparison
Yeah I was going to mention that but forgot. On my twitch page there is a badly completed run and a decent run that failed at the end. I may upload a good one to YouTube soon as well.
Anybody do any runs lately? I've done a few but havent finished any. Had a good one end when I made potions before turning in the herb list and then I couldn't end the class.
I haven't done another run yet due to school stuff. I'm hoping to get some in this weekend.
I finished one yesterday with a time of 2:11:16, with a few deaths, I need to get the battle skip consistant
Ok that sounds good. I've been working on the route a little bit. And StarrlightSims thats a good time. The battle skip is basically all about timing. If you're messing up after poisoning them basically hit A when the poison damage shows up. Thats what I do.
Well after playing other games for a week or so I finally got some runs done. I made a few route mistakes but all in all it went pretty good. My new best time is 1:48:44. This still has a bad death while trying to get the snake fangs. I just lost track of my health. It was avoidable. There is one route change I did and now I'm not sure it saved time. I switched History of Magic to before Defense Against the Dark Arts because you can take the shortcut right next to charms directly there. This does save walking time, along with getting Gringotts out of the way earlier, but I think now that it loses time or is equal. The reason for this is that when you finish Dark Arts Quirell sends you out of the room. However after History Binns doesn't so I think it might save time to warp to dinner from History assuming everything else went well. Anyway what are ya'lls thoughts on that?

Also should I post this run to youtube. Honestly all of the boss fights went very well and it is a solid run overall. I hope someone else is still doing runs occassionally.
One more thing. I just noticed that twitch deleted my run so I think I am going to upload my best run to youtube and post it here as a reference.

Any new times from anyone else?
Still haven't been able to do another run. College is time-consuming. Wink
Wouldn't doing Dark Arts before History make the Gringotts fight easier due to higher level?
Yeah college is time consuming. And yes it would make you a level higher although it probably doesnt make much of a difference. I was just rambling on about the walking route mostly.
Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Been doing other things. I finally got that run posted to youtube so please watch it if you get a chance.

I haven't done a run since but plan to do some in the next few days. This run is still improvable and I still have fun playing the game so I'll continue running the game. Has anyone tried a run recently. Would love to hear about it.
Haven't been able to do another run yet, but I'm going to be watching your run soon and giving it another go.
Really glad there's still work going on for this game. It was one of the first games I looked up when I got interested in speedrunning.
Same here Pip. This was not the first game I looked for a speedrun of but it is the first one I thought about speedrunning. I looked for routes and things and found this page probably back in 2011-12 so thats why I eventually decided to make a route myself. Also any notes on the run or route would be great. This run is still rough in some spots. Also look at how the boat respawns after a battle when crossing the lake. I think this is because I'm close to the wall. Its happened before. We should probably avoid this although extra battles on the lake arent bad. Anyway hope you enjoy it and have a good run.
Also I have decided that grinding for the hardened boots is worth it since its just 5 mins in and its pretty common. Basically saves you buying boots and gives you more SP and other stats that make it easier to survive in the beginning.
Fierce Competitor
I have this game for the Game Boy Color and I thought it was a good game. I would like to see a speedrun of this game. Keep improving and practice. I never tried to play this game to speedrun it or tried to find glitches in the game but there are glitches in the game you can use. The game was a cool RPG and I think that it would be fun to speedrun. Did you find a spell that is good against most enemies, or are most enemies diverse enough so you usually use a lot of different spells? The hardest part could be the Snape challenge room at the end of the game, as that took me a lot of time since it was annoying and I think it was random.
Hey thanks for commenting. Answering your spell question, basically you only need a few spells in this game. You level up Verdimillious for the troll and Incendio for the devils snare at the end. This puts about 15 mins of mandatory grinding in the game but I don't really see a way to route around that right now. So after the grinding you just run from everything. Also for the final bosses there is a cool glitch that I found that lets you skip enemies attack. Its really easy to do so you just poison the enemies and then skip there attacks until they die from poison damage. Theres a video on the first page that shows this and it is also in the run above.

As for Snape's challenge I found an easy way to take the randomness out of it. You just press up (or down) once on each column the first time and see what you get. I've actually won with the first turn like this before. Then you start with the first column and change it while keeping everything else constant. Then when you get a new dot on the right you know thats the ingredient. Then do the same with other columns. This usually lets me beat it in 30-40 secs. Way easier than trying to think your way though. I actually had a good run (a bad time now) fail to this and you go all the way back to before the trapdoor.

Anyway hope you like the run and I am going to try to improve it. Also do you know any glitches that save time because I don't know many.
thanks for advices here, guys. i used to play it a lot , but never have finished it yet. Now here are so many good tips i´m gone try it again. Hope to end it this time Smiley
Yeah definitely finish this game. Its well worth it. My favorite gameboy game behind the pokemon series and Link's Awakening. This route isn't too hard to finish. Just give it a try.
