Has anyone EVER attempted this game? I'm seriously considering it.

I know, RPG's are hard to do, but this game was really good, and i'm considering trying it out.

Cheesy

Any help is appreciated

Crap.

I was thinking of doing a Youtube emulator run of this at some point because it would NEVER get enough verifiers (I think Chamber of Secrets for PC was stuck in verification for over a year or something), but there we go. I haven't actually played it in forever but I remember it being reasonably challenging and overall a good lot of fun, especially for a movie tie-in, and I thought it was great that it came out on GBC at the time because I hadn't gotten a GBA yet >_>

The save anywhere feature is always a huge help in a segmented run, especially in this game where saving doesn't take that long. Grinding I think will be needed in certain parts, simply to do enough damage (for example, Verdimilious Duo is basically mandatory for taking on the troll in the bathrooms), although card combinations can overcome this to a degree; I remember some being pretty powerful, especially at low levels, or having some very useful effects. It will also be worth checking out whether or not the petrification spells work in important battles (I think Mucus Ad Nauseam always works but it's expensive as heck), as well as Wingardium Leviosa which only works on "light" enemies. Making/finding a record of all the hidden items will also help because there are TONS, as well as the secret passageways, which save lots of walking time (some are only one-way though).
I have little idea of how the battle mechanics in this game work, aside from Agility which is obvious and that the Flipendo spells get much stronger at higher levels (...which you won't be reaching). The only way to test this will be to equip certain gear and see how much more damage you do/how much less you take. Kudos if you actually do this, because I have always wondered what the hell Strength affects in an entirely magic-based game (except for the very end of the second one, where you fight with the sword). Anyways, some weaknesses I remember off-hand:
The golem thing you fight in the TV when Peeves hexes you - Vermilious
Troll - Verdimilious
Devil's Snare - Verdimilous/Incendio (pretty obvious, since Hermione basically tells you)
Quirrel - Incendio
VoldeDON'TSAYTHATNAME - Flipendo Sad Ah well, Tria isn't that much stronger than Duo anyway.
That's all I can remember for sure. Weaknesses of regular enemies will also need testing, since they didn't put in an identification spell until the second game. They can be useful both ways; I'm pretty sure spells level based purely on how many times you use them, so you could either pummel enemies that are weak to a spell when levelling or find one that's immune and just cast it enough times. Levelling up also fully heals you IIRC, so this can be abused; as can death warping, now that I think about it. Wow, this could actually end up being a very interesting run o_O

Good luck if you actually try this. It shouldn't be too hard as RPGs come, but there is a LOT of stuff to consider, considering the relative freedom the game gives you.
There's a word for that
Yeah forget everything I said about needing card combos and remembering item locations, this game is a lot easier than I remember it being >_> Funny how 6 years or so does that to you. There really IS tons of stuff hidden around, but most of it isn't especially useful. I also forgot that the cards you get are dictated by the deck you choose at the very start, and playing through 4 times just to see what might be useful really doesn't sound worth it.
Strength affects the power of Flipendo, such that Flipendo Uno's base power = Strength. Everything else is given a minor boost from Magic Str. The petrification spells also work alarmingly well on most things... including all the bosses in the final area.
Sorry if I kind of put you off running this, it's actually a LOT simpler than I thought it would be. There's still some stuff to consider early on, but with cards out of the equation it's not bad at all. As for late game, any difficulties there can be easily solved... with chickens Smiley
Hey. I've been working on a single segment run for this game over the past week while watching AGDQ. I made and tested the route and right now I have a 2:03:50 game time (not sure real time yet). This be able to get down to 1:50 or so.  Is anyone interested in seeing this run? I think this is a great game and deserves a run on this site.

I have found one pretty major glitch that speeds up late game boss fights and helps some early in the game. Also I think I have the grinding down to a minimum ( probably around 12 min and mostly while doing other stuff). I do have the run recorded and even if no one is interested then I will probably still try to improve it. This is my first attempt at speedrunning so I pretty happy with it so far.

Any comments or questions would be appreciated. Also I didn't know if I should have started a new thread or posted in this one.

Thanks

what's the glitch?i never completed this game Sad

the game is great and a short rpg run would be a good addition to the site, you did good in posting in this already created thread,SDA avoids creating too many threads
Glad someone saw this. Basically the glitch is that by pressing the a button at a certain time after using an item or fleeing and failing then you can skip the enemies attack. I found it by randomly mashing which if you do constantly enemies will never attack and you can't do anything either. This only works on enemies faster than you so basically all boss enemies and some regular enemies. The troll in the bathroom is one boss it doesn't work on. But basically I poison the enemies in the final area then try to flee and since I can't escape I stall out all of there attacks. So one the last 5 fights ( the hardest at low levels) I should only get hit by they're first attack. I think it's pretty cool and can put up a video if you'd like.

I think I'm going to do an attempt tonight so ill see if I get sub 2 hrs.
wow,never would guess that.

put a video when you feel like it,maybe on emulator with input display
Heres a video.

The first part is from a run i did tonight which failed shortly after. At the beginning of the fight you see how fast the spider attacks. After I try to flee he attacks much slower because I was trying to do the glitch but failed. After that you see me do the glitch twice then leave.

The second part is from a boss late in the game. The menuing is bad and I think I was distracted by something but it proves the point. I poison him and then attempt the glitch. I failed it once but then do it multiple times faster. Basically why the glitch is useful is at the level I am at I can only do around 25 damage (I think) and he can attack me after. This does 20 each turn (or possibly more if I poison him again) and I can skip the attack making this very fast if done properly.

I'm not sure how to record an emulator with an input display. Mine doesnt have one. Any suggestions for one for Mac?
interesting, have you timed to see if it's faster on all boss battles available to use the glitch or not?  it does look fast cause it skips enemy attacks and avoids grindin

i always used the tasvideos emulator section to find my emulators but i dont know if their version of VBA works on mac
Basically since you skip so much grinding these bosses would be pretty much impossible to beat without it. They are only weak to one spell each and since there are 6 bosses at the end of the game there are too many spells to level up to make it worth it (you level up spells by using them so many times usually takes around 10-15 min). I only level up two spells in the run and only one of them weakens a final boss (might be wrong) Basically you only get to use the poison spell on the final bosses so on any earlier bosses it is only used to skip an attack when you use an item, and then it only skips one of the enemies' attacks (if there are more).

I do have off tomorrow so I'll try to do more runs. Also if VBA is visual boy advance then I have that one. I'll check it for an input display.
Made a profile just so I could comment on this thread.thumbsup
I would be crazy happy to see this run. It's one of my favorites, and I was toying around with the idea last summer. The game is kinda glitchy, so it should be broken. The combat glitch you found seems to save a lot of time if you can consistently get it down like in your boss fight.

Do it, man.
yes VBa has input display at least the tasvideos version, thanks for the explanation since im obviously a noob at the game, you could post there as well to see if there's interest about the game
I've been distracted from this game for awhile. Definitely doing runs tomorrow. If I get a good one ill post it here
Ok so I just finished a run for this game. It was my first run today it went really bad. However I gained about nine minutes in game time (2:03:50 down to 1:54:40) due to better routing. I died in the run and lost a lot of time because of stupid little mistakes. I now think that closer to 1:45 might be possible. If yall are interested I can upload the run although this one should improve soon.

Also Pip_the_Sword and grassini yall should definitely play the game and maybe learn the route. It is a very easy game to run and I could post the route if you want. It would be nice to have some competition.
Ok so I just streamed the game tonight. It was my first stream since I just learned how today after doing that other run. It went ok. Only 2 or 3 people stopped by and no one commented (I'm not suprised.) The run did fail within the last 10 mins and I think it could have been better than the other run but the troll was awful. I won the fight but lost all of my potions so I had to buy some (-45 seconds). Anyway might do more tomorrow. I probably won't stream it unless one of yall can come and watch.
I am definitely interested in seeing your route and watching you stream. Cheesy Do you stream on Twitch? I'll tune in if I can.
General question: do you use card combinations or just straight magic and the glitch you posted above?
Yesterday was my first stream. I'll stream when you can watch. Just let me know I'm free tonight and all of tomorrow. And I haven't really messed with card combinations. Some might be useful but I've never really used them.
Pip I just looked at the run tonight. Absolutely a clutch ending finishing with only two cauldron cakes left. Thanks again for watching. I sort of timed it and real time is was 2:14 which is good considering how much I died and how much I stopped to type in chat. My best so far hasn't been under 2 hours real time although its only off by a few seconds. Anyway I'm not really sure how I should post the route here. Should I just copy and paste it or is there a file sharing website I should use? I can also email you the file if you want.
I think GoogleDocs would be a good way to post it. I've never used it, but hear it's good. It looks like you can attach the file to a post also from the buttons below. If that doesn't work, e-mailing it to me is fine too.
Good stream. The ending was fantastic.

Here's the route. Let me know if the link doesnt work.
Works great! thumbsup Thanks a lot; I'll probably try running it sometime this weekend. Gotta get that 1:45. XD

Best of luck to anybody else looking to run it as well!
Yeah let me know how it goes. Also so far I've been going by game time which works as long as you don't have to reset. Im not sure how we should time it but this seems fine for now. I'll try a few runs tomorrow too.
So just had a good run end in a pretty awesome way. Check it out.

Also have you tried the route yet. Would love any feedback or optimizations.
That sucks man. On the bright side, it's things like that that make me think the code is weak. There has to be a large skip or something.

I'm just now sitting down to try the route. I still have to relearn where everything is, but after a few runs I'll have it down and then we can start on optimizations and finding breaks and stuff.
Definitely agree about a big skip in the game. And take your time learning it. It took me about 5 runs to get a basic route down.

On another note I just completed a run with a game time of 1:50:53 so it's slowly getting better.
