Get this out of the way: Seattle looked like the much better team, but unfortunately, one game is all you get. It just felt like the fix was in for Pitt, just like it felt like the fix was in for Indy earlier. Besides the bad calls, all the underlying stuff like putting the Bus's monologue last.

So uh, what is Lenneth going to be doing against Surt anyway? She doesn't need to CB every turn.

I was always of the opinion that hero value mattered a lot more than levels. You know, each level increases your hero value a little bit? Maybe that is their transfer use. Oh and I'm almost 100% sure you get party XP from Tower of Lezard Valeth.

Is sliding out of rooms that risky? Practice up son!

I'll try to get the game out of my mind now. *sigh*

Lenneth just kinda sits there when not using charge breaks.  If you *really* need to heal she's the one to do it, otherwise just end the turn.  Attacking with her won't make any difference.

And you're absolutely right about hero value.  I'm just saying that you're going to need plenty of CP (and thus levels) to increase that and Undead Int.  This may or may not be possible, I don't know at this point...

Well, basically, I need to never screw up a slide to save time with them.  I *will* pull this off for B ending, that much is for sure, but I don't know about A.

So yep, that's about it.  Practice, practice, practice...

I guess out of the 6 turns, she is attacking in one and CB'ing in 3 as is. Hey, if Shiho doesn't need a Fairy Ring now, what does she get? Does she really need Material Gem or anything?

Too bad, it doesn't seem like you can get Emerald Necklace <3 or Skill Potions easily. You need to clear a dungeon for Emerald Necklace. Oh, and if only it were possible to get another Guts, then you could use Avoid.

Happy sliding!

Hey everyone, been practicing still.  I'm going to Foxwoods for the weekend to celebrate my birthday, 7-card style. =)

Afterward I'll get back on this!

spread the dirt to the populace
Alright everyone, I'm back!

Just did my first full practice run.  There were quite a few things wrong with it, those being:

1. I briefly forgot where to go in Black Dream Tower.

2. Shiho appeared in Ch.6, meaning I wasted four SC's in Ch.5.

3. Forgot to make poison crystals before the first Jotunheim fight, had to run away.

4. Ran into an enemy later on, they got first attack.

5. MAJORLY screwed up the room with the Mithril Golem.  I mean, for a few minutes I forgot how to get to the top there.  You have to jump straight up to the middle platform because the one closest to the Golem is too high to reach, but I forgot about that at the time. =/

Even with all this, my time before Surt was 1:17.  So for the real run, I'm pretty sure I'll get below 1:10.  For an SS, compared to that Japanese time, I'll be very happy with it.

And btw, I am skipping Guts now.  The more I try that battle, the more I'm able to win without any death at all.  I had just been rather unlucky during my first set of trials, it turns out. =)  The awesome thing about this is that it allows me to max out Survival and Fight for everyone, as well as various INT stuff for Shiho.

One more thing...you get 120k event EXP for doing the Flames of Purgatory part.  I'll probably skip a 3 Vanir battle, and divide that EXP between Lenneth and Belenus.  Those two come close to death sometimes, while Arngrim and Shiho don't.

So, that's about it!  Should be able to get this done fairly soon, depends on when Shiho and Surt (and the Ether Scepter) will cooperate with me...

-Josh
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Haha Josh, you know everyone == me, for the most part.

<joke>Hey, if you were recording, you could have submitted this to SDA and gotten accepted! :-/</joke>

I was wondering about Shiho. That kills 50% of runs right there.

Good to hear about Guts, even though the cool Gorhia Cult HQ gets skipped now. (Of course, all the dungeons are cool, who am I kidding?) This is getting optimized all the time. I would suggest using the extra CP and everything to boost offensive skills, but since you kill turn 6 anyway, there's really no point. Too bad you can't skip Guts in A, because then you could get Guts -> Avoid for Jelanda if needed heh.

I thought you were using that event XP already. Wink

You did get your AV selector setup working right? I can't wait. The excitement is too much!

everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
So I just remembered it's time for another reader's digest of AIM talk!

A ending:

- Regarding armor, mages can use Elven Boots for ice prot. Lenneth has several options such as Seraphic Garb. Other fighters are screwed.
- However, this may not be so bad against Fenrir because you can wreck him fast with Calamity Blast. Like they say, the best defense...

B ending:

- Shiho was needing Anointed Cloak for fire prot. However, since she has a free accessory slot, she can just get a Stun Check like everyone else. Since she's in the back, you don't even need to buy her any armor. This saves several seconds.
- With current plans, you have to see Freya's warning in ch4. You can avoid this currently by transferring Jelanda at the start of ch4 before Spiritual Concentration or...
- Shiho randomly comes in either ch5 or ch6. To cut back on SC, the best idea is to test how many SC's it takes to get her in ch5 or ch6, and then pick the shorter one. I calculated that they should be the same, but it's better just to test.
- Instead of transferring ch4 for Mystic Cross, a better idea would be ch2 for Shadow Servant. Since ch2 requirements are less stringent, this would save time on pumping Jelanda's hero value.
- HOWEVER, the real solution (which I insisted on because I was unconvinced recruiting an extra character was a good idea) may be to ditch Shiho altogether and just go with Jelanda. You can't get anything as good as Mystic Cross or Shadow Servant, but a decent alternative is Fire Lance for Calamity Blast, which can be found in Dragoncastle Caverns in ch2.
- Found out just like me, Josh switches his O and X. He said it was for old school A button love, while I did it because it makes it easier to jump and shoot. How this relates is that you should set this in the main menu before starting, so it won't count for time.
- Now this leaves the question of how to get Might Reinforce or Sap Guard, since there's no Shiho. Arkdain Ruins in ch5 is still good for Sap Power -> Guard. However, the best solution (if feasible) might be to just get a Might Reinforce drop from all the poison-weak Vanir at the end that are already used for quick leveling. 3 people would try to knock chests out, and the last person will Poison Crystal.
- This might be used A ending as well, but since you can get Might Reinforce, Spell Reinforce, and Sap Guard all through other means, it's probably not worth the time and risk to do it this way.
- If you ever are just ending the turn with Lenneth during a turn you PWS chain, you might as well let Lenneth get in the hits so she doesn't have to select "end turn." This is almost psychotic-level TAS time saving, but here it is.

Ok, I think that's all that's relevant.
spread the dirt to the populace
Alright then, ran through some more...

There is a fatal flaw with your idea of keeping Jelanda: If you don't transfer anyone, you never get any Ether Scepters.  There are a couple in Jotunheim but they're rather out of the way.  And you want more than 1, in case one breaks after the second combo or something.

Additionally, you have to try and get Might Reinforce from a Vanir, because you can't visit Arkdain (it triggers the bad ending).  That could cost a decent chunk of time too, depending on luck.

Between all that, the longer Surt battle, and the trip to Dragoncastle Caverns (Fire Storm is pretty deep in there) I think my original strategy is still the way to go.  Only thing left to try, really, is whether transferring Jelanda at the start of Ch.4 can skip the Freya segment.

-Josh
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
So Josh caught me on AIM.

The prevailing opinion is now that which way is faster depends on how fast you get Might Reinforce from Vanir. Both routes are luck-dependent if you want to be optimal. Ignoring the Might Reinforce, Jelanda is .7 * .7 * .7 = 34.3% since you need your one Ether Scepter to survive the first 3 PWS's. Shiho is .5 *.7 = 35% since you want to recruit her in the correct chapter, and you still need your first Ether Scepter to survive the first PWS. Also, for both, you need stuff to go right like Surt not killing anyone, especially since we're not getting Guts anymore.

If I can think of anything else, I'll post it.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Well, the only other option I can think of is most likely dumb, but I'll list it anyway. How many PWS's would it take if you had Calamity Blast and no Might Reinforce/Sap Guard? I don't know if Lenneth would have to chip in any more either. But if the answer is something like 5 (possible I think), this may compare favorably to getting chests from Vanir.

Of course, you would need your Ether Scepter to survive yet another PWS, but Vanir are luck-dependent anyway. I don't see any other good wands you can get, so you could also see if the best wand you can buy (Deluge Scepter?) would be good enough if say, the Ether Scepter broke during the next to last PWS.

The last thing is: Shiho's story is so good, that even if a run wouldn't be making any of the text readable, it's almost like we're tempted to make that the tiebreaker or something. Tongue

everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Some more junk from a quick AIM session.

- Josh likes the ideas of skipping MR and getting Deluge Scepter. Probably because they involve less luck!
- A ending will probably (?) have less luck.
- For the required dragon zombie and manticore fights in Tower of Lezard Valeth, use Grimrist and Beast Slayer (from Brahms' Castle) respectively.
- Weapons only break in between turns, meaning that if you win the battle you don't have to worry. This doesn't affect B ending any, but helps a lot with the special weapons in A.
- Still gotta figure out exactly the best way to do the A ending requirements. Most of the FAQ's and such just handwave since they don't care about speed.

And some more thoughts I had later:

Josh was not too thrilled with the prospect of failing to run a lot. I seem to remember in Asgard Hill there are a whole lot of enemies you need to actually fight because they're big and you can't jump over them. Since it's a hill. Tongue Anyway, one possible idea is to complete the Nethov Swamp (kill the dragon zombie with Grimrist) for Bark of the Dryad. Then you could put to use the Creation Gem that's right next to the Ether Scepter in Tower of Lezard Valeth we're collecting anyway, to transmute it to Dimension Slip.

Some other stuff there might be useful too. Shadow Servant x2 would be but we already have Team Mystic Cross. Holy Crystal maybe. Cure Condition -> Auto Item allows for skipping Dark Tower of Xervah. Quartz Gem -> Malice Search, Wait Reaction, and Inscribed Fragment -> Trap Search are good for normal play, but unneeded here. Daemon Slayer if we're fighting any of them, doubtful. Charge is a great skill you can get here too.

I looked at some A ending requirements. Some idiots on the Internet complain about how "hard" and "nonsensical" they are, but there's really only 3, and they make plot sense:

1) Get Mystina.
2) Transfer Lucian.
3) Get your seal rating low (<= 37) during ch7.

Some of these have dependencies of course, like beating Lezard to get Mystina, or getting Lucian so you can transfer him, and you need to go to Weeping Lily Meadow in ch8 of course, but if you just use Spiritual Concentration and do everything, those + 1) above will just take care of themselves. The rest like meeting Brahms are just for seal rating. Here is what Captain K has (starts at 100):

Visit Lucian in Gerabellum:  -15
Visit Weeping Lily Meadow:  -15
Meet Brahms in his castle:  -10
Defeat Lezard Valeth in his Tower: -15
Recruit Mystina:  -10
Recruit Lucian:  -20
Recruit Lorenta, Lyseria: no change
Recruit any other characters:  -2
Not wearing the Nieblung Ring in the Sacred Phase:  -2
Wearing the Nieblung Ring in the Sacred Phase:  +2
Transferring each character:  +12 (including Lucian!)

If you disequip Nibelung Ring from the beginning, that's 6 phases so down to 88. Transfering Lucian counterbalances that exactly (Jelanda is during 7, after the trigger scene!), so 100 again. Recruiting Mystina and Lucian makes 70. Defeating Lezard is another given, so 55. You can see where this is going. Out of the first 3 requirements, this means we can skip one of them! Get that stopwatch out, and time them. I'm pretty sure Weeping Lily Meadow is short, and that scene kicks ass anyway. (Ok, who am I kidding, all the scenes kick ass.)

Anyway, it most likely comes down to, if you need anything from Brahms Castle. The two useful items I see are Beast Slayer for Manticores and Throw -> Splash. Splash is the best warrior support skill IMHO, and especially for an A run. It depends on how long the different scenes take of course (I think Brahms would have to be the longest), but I think we can skip the Castle entirely. I don't know how many Manticores we need to fight, but there's 2 Holy Crystals from Nethov Swamp if we're doing that route, and after Ether Scepter, the coast is clear. And lucky us, we can also get Splash itself from Tower of Lezard. I think skipping Brahms would be kinda funny (even though of course, that dungeon is awesome lol), because if someone was just watching, they would be all like "huh?" during the A ending events.

One last consideration for B ending. Josh, before I remember you said something like "___ isn't worth the time, you can kill Surt in 6 turns anyway." Well now, whatever it was that wasn't worth it, might be worth it again if it makes a difference between say, 8 or not. There's always Mental Reaction and freeing up Lenneth btw. Perhaps to PWS more?

Edit: Apparently ___ was "Sap Guard," which you wouldn't be able to get anyway.
spread the dirt to the populace
Alright, well, I just found out something even cooler...

Since Lenneth is going to need a bow to help knock out chests anyway, I figured that you should just give her the Last Avenger and keep it on her for Surt.  This also helps me knock out gems in the Surt battle, which keeps me from needing Mental Reaction.

When testing this out, I realized something incredibly awesome:

It doesn't matter at all if the Ether Scepter breaks or not.

Now, you should still get it; it's only 5-10 seconds out of the way, it's a big help for the first turn, and the damage from that first combo is needed for this to work.

But if the scepter breaks on the first combo, just have her cast Fire Lance in the last two combos.  Even with no weapon, you are still guaranteed to kill Surt in 6 turns.  Thus, oddly enough, the scepter breaking actually SAVES some time overall.

This has led me to realize something:  Instead of Dragoncastle, you could go to Forest of Woe for Icicle Edge -> Frigid Damsel.  The Icicle Edge there is just one room from the entrance, and you have to use some SCs for Belenus anyway so you may uncover that dungeon first.  And Frigid Damsel's great magic is not a whole lot weaker than Fire Lance's (6x vs. 7.5x).  The only issue would be whether it could kill the Vanir, but I'm sure it can.

Also, there's a Lightning Bolt (same strength as Frigid Damsel) in Black Dream Tower, but that's really deep into the dungeon...only a few rooms before the boss actually.  As such, it's definitely slower than the above idea.

Oh yeah, and Ifrit Caress definitely doesn't take care of the Vanir or let you beat Surt in 6 turns.  I tried that already. =/

I also tested Normal mode btw, and it's slower for sure.  Even more so if this strategy ends up working, of course.

Gotta start a new game and test yet again...

So I talked a bunch with Josh online and there is some stuff I should have summarized before his last post, and some more stuff said since the last post.

But for now, I just wanted to say... VP: Lenneth out TODAY in Japan! Smiley Smiley Smiley

No word on if it'll make it overseas, but I'd recommend the PS1 version anyway. Besides, who has a PSP? Tongue

Edit: Just checked the Magic Box. For any of you living in Japan, the first run of VP: Lenneth was already sold out. The latest update is also about VP: Silmeria. They "reveal" Lezard. Tongue
spread the dirt to the populace
Yay for non-news!

One more good thing here...with how the battle plays out now, I can actually afford to have someone die on turn 2 without losing much time.  I have to wait for 4 to cast Might anyway...3 is just some charge breaking and other crap, so I can divide that up between 3 and 4 and thus afford a death on 2.  You start with 5 union plumes already, so I just include that in everyone's Auto Item setup now.

Dying on turns 1 or 4 still kills the run...but at least 2 doesn't anymore.  And those are the only three turns where he can use his good moves.

I just tried a full practice run...it was all going as planned, no major mistakes, and I was cursing myself for not recording.  Then on turn 4 he hit the Flare Strike on Lenneth, and I felt a lot better. =P

Also, I tested armor, and all my fighters still need all the best stuff.  His explosion move is a physical attack, which I didn't realize before, and the single-target version deals especially good damage.  With just Valiant Armor it still deals like 17k...the other stuff cuts it down to 10k which is plenty manageable.

So everything is figured out this time, I'm sure, and I'll start recording all my attempts now.

-Josh
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Well, all of March has gone by without a post, so I need to bump this. Sad Hopefully Josh is alright, whatever he's up to right now.

Ok, so I went back through the AIM log from a month ago, and here are some points. Skipping over all the SG, 100%, story, SDA, jokes, and uh NFL offseason talk... Tongue

B ending

- Fire Crossbow... can get chests about 2/3 of the time, definitely worth it.
- Lenneth is PWS'ing twice now.
- Mental Reaction would be needed, except if you can get just ONE gem to Belenus OR Lenneth in the 2nd combo, you can skip it... highly likely.
- Not being Shiho, Jelanda needs Anointed Cloak + Material Gem to survive.
- HP takes a big jump at every level of the form 4x + 1, so at the end, everyone is level 21.
- Exp Orb isn't needed because it's like a drop in the bucket compared to Vanir.

- Tested, and easy is still faster than normal.
- Absolute Zero (from Frigid Damsel) usually doesn't kill Vanir in one turn (3 out of ~20-25 attempts), but Josh is still sure it's better.
- With current route, this is 1:03 or so, which is pretty good considering the writer of the best FAQ says it can't be done in 2 hours.

A ending

- Dunno if Jelanda needs to be hero'd up for Might Reinforce in ch7 Sacred Phase. We could just get it from Vanir, or probably just skip it completely.
- I convinced Josh that it's not worth leveling up to 21 because either you want to be never dying (like in the B run) or dying all the time at low levels and letting Auto Item + Guts save you, and that being in the middle is no man's land. Since it obviously takes too long to get to "never dying," we think it's best to just level up enough for maxed out Auto Item + Guts.
- So, it's probably not worth getting Splash and Charge.
- Also, this means that Nethov Swamp is likely not going to be done, but it depends just how many fights you need to fight in Asgard Hill. Instead of getting Dimension Slip, you could just go through the place normally and take the XP.
- From a theoretical standpoint, I think it's obvious that you would want to give the Apocalypse wand to the back row mage.
- May need Freeze Check(s) vs Fenrir, since we won't have the Eternal Lamp.

Get well soon. =/

I don't know if Josh read this thread or what, but he contacted me to let me know he was still around.

Which is nice, because I was gonna give him another month or so before I took over. Tongue
Hello!
hmmm i know this game too be long.
On hard it took me more than 10 hours too finish.

How much time would you consider it a speedrun?
Whats the objective?
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
http://speeddemosarchive.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=main;action=display;num=1136789888

I guess this thread is an intimidatingly long read, and only about 5 people have posted in it. Wink

You don't have to worry about these runs being too long. Josh has done the B ending run in just over one hour (not yet recorded), and I estimate that the A ending run can't possibly be any longer than 3 hours.

As for objective, it's beating the game with B ending or A ending as fast as you can from new game, single segmented. I am also going to do a Seraphic Gate run, single segmented of course.
Hello!
Ahh so its not a 100% run. See i thought it was :/

Idd still love too see a movie on the A ending, even if its not 100% completed.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Ok, so Josh is not dead. I've since talked to him on AIM once I think. He will get around to it but he was off playing in GC Naruto tourneys or something.

Anyway, it's been so long I scarcely remember, but I do know some new things. First of all, I went and timed all the PWS's and such for everyone. This has the most use in a Seraphic Gate run of course. I will put what I have in the next post. I also wrote down all the traits for everyone, and since I have it and I don't know anywhere else on the Internet where it's available, I'll make a post for that too.

First, regarding the A run, we were going to get Concentration from Celestial Castle. Everyone remembers this skill as "really terrible," so I was giddy at the thought of putting it to great use in a speedrun. Well after testing again, I remember now why it sucks. AFAIK, it reduces your CT by 2, not to 2, which is a world of difference. Now it isn't worth it, which hurts the optimal strategy a lot, and (not a speed issue heh) there's no reason now to go to Celestial Castle, which I love.

Although I just realized something that would be possible for a speedrun, although flakier than necessary for normal play. I can't guarantee anything at this point since I've forgotten most of the A and B run details (grats posting for my own posterity I guess), and on the whole, I feel like I've forgotten more about this game (like what I am going to say) than most people ever knew in the first place. I don't think this affects the B run any, but I need to ask Josh to make sure.

Anyway, even if all people need Charge Breaks and even 3 are mages, you can CB them all if you daisy chain. Typically you don't do this as it's inconsistent and seeing how you can equip Mental Reaction for "free" basically, there's no reason. What I mean is, let's say you have 3 mages, you can't have any of them CB themselves obviously. But you can have Lenneth CB mage1, mage1 CB mage2, mage2 CB mage3, and mage3 CB Lenneth. This works because mages can't use items with CT, but after getting CB'd, they are free to CB the next person in the chain, and so on.

Like I said, I don't think this would even come in handy in the B run. In the A run, it very likely would. In fact, I don't remember if you would want to Fairy Ring up either Lenneth or Belenus, but since their CT's are 4 and 3, you might want to, to free up more item uses like Elixir. Oh wait, Belenus isn't in A run, but Arngrim is, and his CT is an unredeemable 6. Anyway, I think this works and we are no worse off than before. Better even, skipping a dungeon.

I also did some work on the Seraphic Gate run, because I wanted to get it done to pressure Josh into doing the normal runs. Wink However, they won't be coming for a while, because I severely underestimated this. Even at level 99, you can't even just waltz into Iseria Queen and beat her in 2 PWS chains! Also, memorizing the place and more importantly, getting really good at executing it are FAR from trivial. Speedrun-quality movement is actually really hard I think.

I actually tested and figured out the exact route you'd want to use, given not picking any chests up. I'll put that in the next post. However, since obviously this isn't correct (my goal is to win in 2 PWS chains), the routes aren't finalized yet. Incidentally, it is possible to win in 1 PWS chain, but it involves using everyone like Freya, having all the best equips, and saving and reloading after each possible stat gain (what I call gamewave'ing heh) to ensure best possible stats. That and 1.5 million damage with Freya can be seen here.

Oh and maybe the largest hurdle of all. I got a level 99 in ch8 saved game for my dexdrive from gamefaqs to do some testing, but I'm pretty sure the save is hacked. So I'd best just build up a level 99 save myself. I would have to go from the beginning if it mattered, because then I could save up Golden Eggs and other things from the beginning for the Seraphic Gate party.

Eh, my original estimate for this was "one day." I can't keep on being this wrong on all my estimates, can I? Oh and if I didn't make it clear enough, I'm not actually actively working on this.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Blue is getting in. Red is getting out. The first level and fourth level are basically the same except reverse. I got the base pics from gamefaqs, and the credit is still there. Wink

At the top is what everyone's hero value adds up to when fully modified. Each level gives you +1 IIRC. Below are all the actual breakdowns. I was going to also list by trait, but that would be a lot of work heh.

Actually doing this makes me love this game even more (note: not actually possible!) since it's done very well. In most games they do simple throwaway crap like "blood type: O" and "likes beef." But here, this actually matters to both the plot and the gameplay. Not only that, if you pay attention, and this is brilliant, the trait values are not based on morality. They're not being judged to be allowed into heaven or whatnot. These are purely what you would want, cold and calculating, for einherjar for your army. For example, empathetic is +2, moralistic is +3, while nimble is +5, stout is +6, and sacrificing is +7. Prideful is only -2, narcissistic -1, while can't swim and sickly are -5, unlucky is -7, worrier is -8, and covetous is -9, the worst of all. Of course, this last one is because Odin doesn't want you taking his artifacts. Wink

Code:
Suo 180
Lorenta 148

Hello!
With all this i might consider doing a Hard speed run on my own once i get used too everything again.

Iam actually in the Salerno Accademy atm. Having some problems with the vines and perfumes (i will not use FAQs or anything like that).

Lemme discover things by my own until i ask.
