I don't know if Charge is unblockable, though I doubt it, because it already increases damage. You might try Triple Distress (archer) or Dark (non-archer) on Valkyrie. And yes, Charge is non-archers only. Triple Distress is in the Lost City of Dipan, so I guess that's a no. Dark is kinda near the beginning of Arkdain ruins, where you're going anyway. That is, if Surt blocking is really a huge problem.
Mental Reaction has 4 levels. At level 4, it takes 30% of your DME to reduce your CT to 0. It won't let you use it if you don't have the 30%. At level 1, it takes 45%. This is key because it is under 50%, meaning that after you get Elixir'd up or Union Plume'd, you will have the necessary DME. Even with a 3 mage party, I like to keep some Charge Breaks around just in case. These are just like level 4 Mental Reaction except that you use them as an item on whoever you want. In other words, they are insane. The reason you need Mental Reaction for mages, incidentally, is because they cannot use items while they have CT, but non-mages can. My MO whenever possible is to be able to do a full PWS chain every other turn, which is why I put the Fairy Ring on Valkyrie. Charge Breaks could be good for Final Blast I guess. With a Fairy Ring, Belenus would be able to PWS every single turn I guess. That would be a great party idea: 3 people (not Valkyrie sadly unless I'm missing something) that would be able to PWS every turn.
I forgot about those Vanir. I don't know how many people need to participate to fill up the combo meter, but if it's 3, I would suggest Celestial Star the first round, not using Arngrim, who then Charge Breaks Shiho still in turn 1. Then Shiho can Sap Guard turn 2, and then Might Reinforce turn 3 while the rest do a PWS chain, and the rest follows from there.
Bangle stacking doesn't work. I remember I had an all-female party on Easy where I had everyone equip Earrings of Healing, which came about because the stacking didn't work.
About dieing with Might Reinforce: my guess is not after a Union Plume (guts counts as sort of a saving throw against dying), since that's how it works in some other games and it only makes sense. I haven't tested though. Buffs do not stack, unlike in some games like Lufia where amazingly they do (but with diminishing returns of course). The Reinforces last for ten turns, while the Saps last for five. You can use them as much as you want, so just keep count. Using a Charge Break on Shiho would allow for rebuffing the Sap Guard during a "down" turn between Mystic Crosses.
Your PWS order sounds good, because I bet you need Celestial Star to make it to Belenus. Oh wait, you say that yourself in the next paragraph.
Now for some stuff of my own:
I assume you are setting up your Auto-Item as 100 Union Plume, 99 Banish/Prime Banish, 98 Elixir? I don't know if you need Prime Banish vs Surt, but I typically set up 2 people as 99 Banish/23 Prime Banish and vice versa. For normal runs where I'm actually stocked with all the items, I like everyone at 100 Union Plume, 2 at 99 Banish and the rest 99 Prime Banish, Valkyrie at 98 Prime Elixir and the rest at 98 Elixir, and everyone at 23 Noble Banish and 0 Noble Elixir.
I realized, if the only guy you really fight an extended fight is Surt, why don't you just abuse his elemental nature and heavily prioritize Fire protection? If everyone has Fire-50%, I'm sure that would be better than a little added defense. Feasible armor with Fire protection are Feathered Tiara, Anoited Cloak, Blaze Guard, Extreme Guard, and Stun Check.
I actually managed to aquire this game through a friend... he just happened to have it and is letting me borrow it until I finish it. Now i'll be able to understand what is going on when this run is completed

You should thank your friend daily for letting you play this game and for being so nice. I had to ask three different people if I could borrow their Ogre Battle SNES cart because I wanted to replay it a couple years back, and they wouldn't relent because the price value had become so high. I ended up buying the much inferior PS1 version.
About Josh's run though, I was talking to him on bisqwit's, and he said he lost his interest somewhat and that he would wait until Radix's situation improved. I told him that games such as Maken X and Heavy Metal: FAKK 2 (never even heard of this) are currently needing verification, so that removes that excuse. If he just doesn't want to do it, that's fine. But we'll see what happens. I might eventually do it myself, but there's other games that I would do first.
Regarding this run, it's possible now that I might do this over the winter break because one run that I wanted to improve then (Star Ocean 3) recently got someone willing to do it. I'm all out of practice though, so no guarantees.
Oh, and anyone who reads this, still bug Josh about this, and don't let him know I said I might do this.
I was playing SO2 trying to unlock Universe mode, and I accidentally wrote over my Rena file. So, I might get back to this. Although I'll probably get SO3 for Christmas (had heard bad things about it, but what the hell, I'll give it a shot).
Anyway, I'm thinking about a capture card, as the whole VCR thing is going to be rather annoying even if I could get it to work. What type should I get?
I've finally gotten around to running myself (FF2 SNES in progress), so I urge you to do the same!
SO3 has its flaws, but it is still my 2nd favorite game on the PS2 (note: I haven't played anything since fall semester started). Many tri-Ace fans didn't like it because it doesn't have as much of that tri-Ace charm, but the battle system is the best I have ever played. Holystar of http://www.holystar.ch.vu/ agrees, and he has to be the biggest expert of all. A lot of people rag on the AI, but that's mostly them not knowing how it works.
If you're doing SS under 2 hours, that's basically ideal for using a VCR. As for a capture card, it depends how serious you're going to be with capturing videos. If so, you want a video editing card with hardware encoding. If not, any old cheap TV/capture card that has s-video input and captures in stereo is fine. If you want to watch TV, get one that supports DScaler (compatible cards are listed on their site). I personally have a Hauppauge WinTV that has done everything I ever wanted of it and more, that I got slightly used and el cheapo for $10. The head honchos of this site seem to like the ATI All-in-Wonder, which is probably a waste if you already have a video card. Almost forgot to say, you want a PCI or AGP card. USB is still too damn slow.
While you are getting SO3 for Christmas, I am one year ahead of you in catching up. I recently picked up Radiata Stories (along with Shadow of the Colossus), and I'll get around to playing that in a while. tri-Ace is the only developer which I will buy their games on faith alone.
Finally, the big news. Dunno if you know this, I just found out today, although I had suspected this announcement was coming. A prequel to Valkyrie Profile is in development for the PS2! It centers on Silmeria, the youngest one (maybe it'll be a trilogy with Hrist eventually). They are also going to do a rerelease/remake/something of the original for the PSP, this being Square Enix now of course.
I've always said that I could count the number of games I wouldn't like to see a sequel (I'm talking about any sequel, not just a direct sequel) for on one finger, reserved for VP. I suppose this is because I feel there really is no way it could match the original. So I'm having some mixed reactions, but in the end I think I'm glad. It helps that it's a prequel maybe.
!!! Thanks a lot for the news, I never heard about that! Teh awesome.
And I agree with you on tri-Ace, their games are just about all I play anymore.
Sounds like I'll want to just stick to VCR then...still need to get that A/V selector.
OK, now to the actual run. The Blaze Guard and Extreme Guard are just not feasible, so that leaves Valkyrie with the Feathered Tiara and Shiho with Anointed Cloak. Arngrim and Belenus have no armor with Fire protection...should I use their second accessory slot on Stun Checks, or stick with the Fairy Rings?
And I am convinced that Might Reinforce is a waste of time, since it does wear off when someone dies. Shiho's still the most convenient mage available though.
OMG, I think I finally have the whole strategy down now!
First off, the Reinforces DO maintain their effects even if a character dies. I tested this again, and I was wrong the first time.
Second, casting both Sap Guard and Might Reinforce is not worth the turns spent. I tried this battle every which way, and my best result came when I only used one of those spells (killed Surt in 7 turns).
What this means, then, is that the Arkdain Ruins will be completely eliminated from the route. Sap Guard and Might Reinforce are equally good, in this one battle in my run, and Shiho already starts with the latter.
Also, with my strategy, Mental Reaction is never needed. Here's a rundown of the turns:
1. Have Shiho, Arngrim, and Belenus combo Surt. For the PWS, go Belenus->Arngrim->Shiho. Since no support spells have been casted yet, Celestial Star is far more powerful than my fighters' PWS's, hence it goes last. Then, have Valkyrie use a Charge Break on Shiho; she's the odd one out because her PWS is easily the weakest AND its animation is really long.
2. Have all the fighters use however many Charge Breaks are necessary, and have Shiho cast Might Reinforce. If you have any fighters who can still act after this, have them use a Noble Elixir or something...anyone dying is Very, Very Bad.
3. Bust out your big-assed combo, using the PWS order I described earlier.
4. Again, use however many Charge Breaks you need. Again, heal if you need it and can afford it.
5. Combo again.
6. Same as 4.
7. One last combo, it should only take a couple PWS moves to kill him.
As for equipment, I've found it best to go with a Fairy Ring for Shiho and Stun Checks for all my fighters. Reason being, the first turn, with the Vanir attacking, will often dizzy someone which is Very, Very Bad. Shiho never gets physically attacked, plus she needs the Fairy Ring so she can attack right after Might Reinforce.
And as for skills...for my fighters I max out Fight and level up Survival and Resist Damage (you get this along with Mystic Cross for sending Jelanda in Ch.4). That sounds lame, but there really isn't anything else that's good at all. And for Shiho I just boost her INT as much as possible.
The one and only thing I'm considering changing at this point is getting Charge. It's directly along the path in Jotunheim (well, rather, Scarlet Edge is, and you turn that into this)...it takes only a little bit of time to get, but I don't see it saving much either since normal attacks are only a tiny portion of your damage in this fight.
So glad it looks like you're really doing this, and your optimization seems top-notch.
Yeah, it seems like VCR is the way to go. A capture card is golden whenever you're doing a run like my FF2 with many segments and many retries. It takes me about 5 seconds to retry a segment, love the SNES.
I was going to suggest Stun Checks, but I see you already answered your own question.
It's not too surprising that Sap Guard and Might Reinforce is overkill for Easy Surt. You'll probably want it for your A ending run though.
Mental Reaction not being used with 1 mage doesn't surprise me either. It's a must with 3 mages, but with 1, you can just get someone else to use a Charge Break. I mainly suggested it because it's right there in Jotunheim.
For Charge, it depends if you're having trouble with people dying and Survival and Resist Damage fix that. Or it could just be that the several seconds it takes to get it just aren't worth it. Ah, how the world was simpler before TAS's. I get angry at my imperfect menu manipulations while recording now.
I just got to Chapter 2 with Valkyrie, Belenus, Arngrim, and Jelanda. Still getting the hang of the game (I didn't even notice that my weapons were breaking, or what my CP was for) and I'm also struggling with figuring out who to send up, but hopefully I'll have a better grasp of the game once Josh finishes his run/releases some segments.
SSJ Tetsuo Hibiki: No, you won't learn very much from this run, trust me. After the first dungeon, there will be literally no fighting until the last dungeon.
If you're willing to use an FAQ for help, Captain K's is all you need. If you have any specific questions, just post them and I'll answer.
All I'll say for now is, get Lawfer. It's not obvious at first, but his PWS attack is sickeningly powerful. Belenus and Arngrim are both among the better fighters though, so you're pretty well off already. All mages are more or less the same, starting spells is the most significant difference.
Enhasa: Yeah, Survival and RDM do help a bit. And Charge isn't worth it, I just gave it a go. So it looks like I've got everything for this run figured out now.
Also, if you're familiar with "wavedashing" in fighting games (Marvel/Tekken/SSBM)...you can do something very similar with Valkyrie's slide, but I don't think it's actually any faster than just running. If it is, it's only marginally so.
So, yeah. When I get the A/V selector I should be able to get this baby done. The A ending run is going to be hell to plan out, I can say that much...but it would be much more entertaining for the viewer.
Yeah, I've been checking that FAQ on a regular basis.
What does "Guts" do? I saw that 1.49 million Ether Strike video and I still don't get how they did a 99 hit combo if you can only attack once with each character plus a 4-step PWS combo.
Because you can actually attack 3 times with each character; different weapons allow you to attack 1, 2, or 3 times. Early on, when you get a 3-hit weapon with lower power and a lower-hit weapon with higher power, take the lower-hit weapon. Higher attack power means more PWS damage. In the endgame this isn't an issue since all the best weapons let you attack 3 times.
And Guts is a must-have late in the game and in the bonus dungeon. When you die, it gives you a very high chance of reviving with single-digit HP. The last few bosses (in the "best" ending route) and the bonus dungeon enemies tend to have moves that wipe out your whole party instantly, so this is almost a necessity.
Oh. I played a little longer, and sent up Belenus for chapter 2 with a hero rating of over 100.
The new screenshots of Silmeria look good. It's in full 3D, but a few of the screenshots reveal that the battle system is remaining similar (if not unchanged) from the original game.
Josh: I probably know what you're talking about, but I don't know the term. Is it sliding and then taking a short hop? If so, I think running is better because you won't screw it up and I don't know which is faster. Although I do think you should slide off platforms where it speeds you up, if you weren't doing so already. That definitely is faster I think.
I'll help you out with your A ending run of course.
Tetsuo: Since it is Japanese, of course they save and reload for every level gain or stat boosting item so that max strength stats are gained.
I only got to look at one magazine scan type picture of VP: Silmeria. Are you sure it's in 3D? Part of the appeal of the original was the 2D platforming, so I hope they don't make it like every other cookie cutter RPG. I think I heard somebody on the RPGamer forums say something about 3 players in battle instead of 4. While this is disappointing if true, it's certainly not surprising given modern day RPG trends. Although since VP, SO3 is 3 characters and Radiata Stories is 4, so maybe tri-Ace just has this weird alternation going on, dunno.

The Magic Box had screenshots of the battle system and it still has four characters. It looked identical to the original's battle system.
It seems that the trailer shown at Jump Festa had 2.5D gameplay (think Yoshi's Story, or Viewtiful Joe), so I imagine the gameplay as a whole will remain similar to its predecessor.

2.5D is love. Klonoa, Viewtiful Joe, NiGHTS... apparently one factor to making a great game.
