How useful is it though outside of The Seraphic Gate? I find that most of the fights are done using special weapons or gems.
spread the dirt to the populace
oh wow, i never knew about that glitch! too sick!!! shame i'm american but o well~

on vacation now w/ family, won't be back until late next week. feelin good on seraphic gate, which means i'm 99% good on B ending too lol
Congratulations Josh, out of curiosity, why did you decide to not run the A ending?
spread the dirt to the populace
i want to improve A ending if this "no might reinforce" idea works out. lots of little improvements possible as well as a couple major ones (no guts, no beast slayer). maybe 2:30 or less in SDA timing...?

shifting the biggest RNG element to the very end of the game would be annoying, but if i could do it years ago without streaming i can handle this!

oh yeah, one last funny thing: i found a way to avoid the vanir fights in the section where you have to carry the flame. problem is, it takes so long to set up that the flame runs out =(

Seeing as this game became active here again, is there a way we can establish the different categories and list them nicely?
I'm just gonna list a few things that can differ in game, and wondering which should be considered the same category and which is their own:

Easy, Normal and Hard its own category?
The different endings their own category?
English and Japanese their own category?
PSP and PSX their own category?
Any%, low% and 100% their own category? (duh)

I'm currently planning on running ending B on easy.
While I cannot list off all the categories right now, I am running hard all artifacts all characters A ending.
spread the dirt to the populace
yea, there are a lot for this game! let me do my best...

difficulties would all be separate categories, though that's not a huge difference. biggest thing is Easy having shorter 1st dungeon and way fewer characters & dungeons, as well as more EXP from battles. i think the only differences between Normal & Hard are characters' starting levels, dungeons, and Hard having Lyseria.

different endings are definitely their own category. i doubt SDA would recognize "get the C ending and beat Freya" but some Japanese players have even done that one haha

English & Japanese would be different categories unless someone can break down the exact time difference between their cutscenes. and given all the categories & the random fits of long load times (a tri-ace trademark), that ain't happenin

i suspect PSP would be different but i'm not sure, nobody seems to run that lol. i've heard it's kind of a crappy port in terms of how it plays...

people don't do a pure 100% for this game since that would take forever and be full of cutscenes. instead, people do any% and "all dungeons". there is a bit of controversy over whether all dungeons should include the forest of spirits revisit - i say yes since there's an extra boss & more artifacts, and you don't hear that "dungeon complete" music until you do that. the SDA all dungeons run doesn't do that though.

there is also one more category that was never valid for SDA before since it included a reset, though they have become more open to that recently. i'm talking about the seraphic gate RTA, as in "start new game -> beat seraphic gate". this seems to have become the most popular category among the Japanese players, as it's still quite short for a RPG run and has very few cutscenes after the intro. you can only run this one on Hard difficulty basically, as you need some flame jewels to get the broken weapons for Iseria Queen.

there are also other non-official categories for fun. i've been working on all dungeons with solo Lenneth, and am interested in a "no lucid potions" run for both main endings. my first SDA run on the B ending was no lucid potions lol, we didn't know about that strat back then!
I'm doing pure 100% Sad chapter 1-2 takes 1.5 hours on hard, RIP my time
spread the dirt to the populace
o god no way i ever try that haha

at least you don't have to worry about spiritual concentration RNG in a 100%, so there's that!!!
It's fun though, Lenneth has very wise quotes that I enjoy revisiting. I find I spend 4-6 minutes on average per dungeon and the rest of it is cutscenes xD
the pro strat is to hold off on the dungeons with unavoidable enemies (e.g. solde catacombs dragon servants, barbarossa clones) until you get the dimension slip. heck, probably until chapter 5 where you can start making poison crystals

i dunno how serious you are but figured it may be worth mentioning =)
Mhmm, I've been skipping those until after Lezard's Tower. I do have a question though; if I run the game in one segment how do I time the disk switch? Just use the in game time from my save? If so them where does my game end for the A ending? When the final cutscene triggers or when I save for the first time after beating Loki? (spoilers? XD)

Great, thanks Josh. Smiley
So that'd make my category for English PSP: Any% Easy EndingB.
Would be weird seeing such a lengthy category on TSSB.

I'm currently only practicing on emulator until I get hold of the actual game, but I don't really see much difference between the psp and psx version. Maybe there's a different loading time somewhere, but only difference I see is no disc switching at chapter 5 in the PSP version.
PSP version don't have any big magics so Surt is a cakewalk and the run is faster overall since you don't have to go through the lengthy FMV. The PSP version is kinda weird, it has the english translation but discarded every changes that was in the NA PS1 version, it's basically the japanese build with english text.

panda, SDA uses time at final save and adds on the rest in real time IIRC

gotta be quick on that disc switch!

also if you do single segment all dungeons, you will need to save & reset before fighting gandar. if not, the game softlocks after you beat him!

nah, not anymore. sda quit doing that & just uses straight realtime now where they used to combine timing methods

oh cool thanks!!! thats the way i like it myself =)

btw vorpal, do you think SDA would accept seraphic gate run now since resets seem to be kosher? and should it replace enhasa's?
i honestly have no idea. you should ask someone still on staff =p

I don't think anyone on staff has any say for how specific games are run, it's all up to the community that actually run the game. As long as the run holds true to RTA I don't see a problem with it.
It might not be single segment, but no one does that anymore. At worst it would be considered a NewGame+, but that would still be a category on its own.
The runners just need to agree how it's done.

not true with regard to SDA submissions

SDA tends to stick to the convention of low%/any%/100%, and makes distinctions for death abuse and major glitches (megaman zips and so on). they won't accept a solo run in a RPG, for example.

vorpal: i figured but i never know when to approach mike or anyone, what with all the work going into marathons these days haha
Why does the game soft lock after Gandar?
spread the dirt to the populace
nobody quite understands. we just know that if you save & load before that part, you'll be good for the rest of the game. heck, the SDA all dungeons run does that!

all of the random softlocks, long load times, misplayed voice samples, etc. happen on emulator as well, so it's not a disc-reading issue...

oh yeah, and i now seem to have my stream working well. expect to see a lot more of me on twitch, and all on this game!
What is your twitch? I might just consider running the PSP version for simplicity.

tonight will be console stream, i can also do emulator but haven't set up OBS for epsxe yet

Sounds fine to me since you're going from starting a new game to getting one of the endings, the run uses real time, and all time spent preparing the SG file is counted towards the final time.  Let me see what the rest of the staff thinks though.
