VIOLENce!
Hi, I'm new here. Well, new to the forum, not the site. I've downloaded many of the runs and they seem very interesting. Smiley And difficult. Sad I see the talent here isn't lacking.

Anyway, I was wondering why hasn't anyone attempted a Parasite Eve 2 run? As you may already know, Parasite Eve 2 is different from the prequel, as it plays like Resident Evil aka a good speed run. I've seen a claim of 0:55 New Game by VMarken on GameFAQs, but there is no video as far as I know. Edit: Later in this topic I found out that the 55 minute figure is bogus since SDA will only count the total time of the video, and not the time displayed in game.

I think only New Game runs should be accepted though, since BP carried over from a previous game can be an unfair advantage.

I'm just throwing the suggestion out there, because as of current I don't have a video capture device (or the time) to do it myself as of yet. Maybe later.

Discuss. Smiley

sshplur was working on a Parasite Eve 2 run, and Parasite Eve 1 is on my list of things to run.

New Game runs and New Game + runs are two different categories on this site.

Welcome to the forums btw.

What's the difference? (I think I know, but let me make sure)

Thanks. Smiley

New Game = Out of the box.

New Game +/Load Game = File from another playthrough.

Special Weapons = New Game + run with unlockable weapons.

We require new game runs to be done first anyway.

Cool. I wonder how much progress he's making. I can't wait to see this!
Fucking Weeaboo
I liked the original.  I hated the sequel.  Bad controls, crappy music, and a blah plotline.

If you try this, you're insane. ^_~
VIOLENce!
It's not that bad. I guess Squaresoft wanted the sequel to lean more toward the survival hurror side, so there you go.

Pluses:
*PE spells are more balanced.
*Stats were replaced by BP, Armor, and more cunning has to be used in battle.

Minuses:
*20 item inventory limit.
*Weird music (Maybe the first one was weird too).
Fucking Weeaboo
I wouldn't call it weird.  I would call it bad and unvarying.  Go listen to the soundtrack.  There's about 15 different tracks used in the game and a total of about 2 notes difference between them.

Don't even try to compare it to PE1's music by Yoko Shimomura.  She rox my sox.  *huggles my Legend of Mana OST*  (She also did Super Mario RPG, FYI.)
FF8 & FF12.. Long awaited runs.
Looking forward to any run or attempt at a run at this awesome game regardless of some peoples opinion on it.
VIOLENce!
Well, you don't have to worry. We won't be getting to enjoy much of the music during a speedrun.  Grin

The funny thing is that the game clock isn't running in real time. In real time, 40 minutes will have already passed by the time you fight Cannon-Mouth. On top of that, the clock is also slowed down in the PAL version and it even stops for when the camera angle changes -_-

So when Vincent says 'your time should be this by now' in his FAQ he means the game clock. Whether it's accurate or not is up to you (kind of like DMC3's mission clock where it's strictly counting when you control Dante) but the point is the game has to be timed manually. Instead of 55 minutes it's more like 1:50:xx.

If there was a results screen then we wouldn't have to worry about this at all (Super Metroid is one game that comes to mind), but...

Another thing is that the clock also resets the seconds when you save. So your 30:59 will become a flat 30:00 when you load it. This isn't usefull info unless you do a segmented Baton run or something.

Lord_VG: I love Yoko's music too. Legend of Mana's intro (even had the same fade-out piano and bells finish as in PE's intro) blew me away, but they captured the atmosphere very well in PE2. The music isn't typical, it's more ghostly, experimental and geared towards the atmosphere. Cannon-Mouth and Big Vacuum's music in particular are very cool. Anyway.

I remember I played a pirated copy of the first one and loved it! I'm from Europe and it didn't arrive here, but the sequel did.

I bought it but it wasn't to my liking since it changed so much from the original. :-/

I still have the game although disc one is in a questionable condition so I don't even know if it will run.

I don't have anyway to record and on another bombshell I  read that the PS2 (slim) doesn't work with 3rd party PS1 memory cards! I'll have to check that out later!
:-[

EDIT: I checked it out and it seemed to find the memory card OK. I'll play through this and see how it is. Although there is a speed guide on gamefaqs which would be better than anything I could find out.  Smiley

Sony Systems + Squaresoft Games + 3rd Party Memory Cards generally are a bad mix.  Don't ask me why just Squaresoft games though...

I'm doing some test runs of New Game right now. Looking for problem spots. Does any know if the in-game clock continues when you pause(like Resident Evil)? I know that the real time will be recorded, but I'm just curious.

Also, might this game run better on a PSone or PS2? I know of one particular room in Akropolis(the water fountain room) that is VERY slow in between perspectives.
Why would you pause the game in a speedrun though?
not too long ago i did a  tool-assisted sub 1h run on nightmare mode. about 58 ingame time i guess (52 at the last save point). it would have been faster if i had skipped the black armory card. i thought the sp12 would be good to have but i didn't really need it.

nightmare mode is a little boring though, because there's no good weapons in the stores.

Sometimes you have equip things to your armor or do inventory management.
oh. right.

The timer keeps going in PE2.

I am a few minutes into Neo Ark. Some notable boss challenges and my current strategies:

*No. 9. I start the fight with full health. I use Pyrokinesis twice, follow up with about 3 submachine gun clips, and perhaps use one electrical wire trap on him.

*Underground Stalker. Before this, I try to fight just enough battles to buy the M4A1. I start the fight with full health with the M4A1 and a Combat Light equipped. I blind him, use Pyrokinesis until dry, then finish with the M4A1.

*Burner. I get into the little cove where he can't reach me, and then time my M4A1 bursts so that his flamethrower will get deflected each time.

*Giant Chaser. Since Burner was defeated quickly, I get the M950. I start the fight off in full health. First, I shoot each of the barrels for about 20 points of damage, and let 'em explode when he gets nearby. Finish off the first form with a few more rounds. For the second form, I lure him and give him the other three barrels. After which, I keep running around, shooting him with the M950 and Pyrokinesis (Level 2 by now). Actually, I think I should just use the M4A1 next time.

I will post more later. Tell me what you think.

*Edit: Dammit. The Puppet Bowman just killed me.
Which version of the game are you playing, TyrantX?

why not just walk past it instead, you don't have to kill it.

the guy who did the 55 speedrun said that it was faster to not kill the burner. maybe because he didn't have any good weapons because he didn't spend any time on unnecessary fights.

necrosis is useful for many bosses in nightmare mode, but i don't know if it's any good in normal mode.

M4A1 is slow as hell, why use that instead of M950?

NTSC version on PSOne.

I guess I could. But it gives so much BP! And I spent it all on the M4A1 by that point.

Really? It doesn't sound too fun to wait three(or is it five) minutes for Burner to leave.

Just preference. I don't like the M950 at all. I think its actually heavier to handle. I also make it a perogative to use the M9 Bayonet. It is strong. Grin

Necrosis! That's what I should use against the Puppet Bowman. I nearly forgot about that since I was only invoking fire spells.

so you're not doing a speedrun, you're doing a BP-run? Tongue Wink

i would probably skip M4A1 and buy some better shit instead, like the grenade pistol.

you can't just wait, you have to take away 1000 HP or so before he can leave.

what the Fuck are you talking about, M950 is the best gun ev4r, it's almost as fast as that motherfucking M249 Shocked

i dunno, it wears off pretty quickly on that boss.

btw... if you don't know, eau de toilette (toilet water, lol) is pretty good to have, it puts you to berserker mode which is like energyshot lv3. combine berserker and energyshot and you can do great damage.
...
I played a bit of this today, just finished the tower.

Since it's so short (according to the guide) is this going to be single segment? Or is it too random? I know it's two disks, but I can't remember whether it forces you to save.

I need BP to buy ammunition you know. Since I'm getting the sad ending(no free rifle ammo). Cry I wonder if the required bosses make up for it.

If you damage him too much, Burner's face will blow off and he'll get pissed off. Then he'll never leave. I'll experiment.

Well if you suggest that I don't kill Burner, I can't get the M950. Which is it?  :-/

Hmm... I'll try that. Do you know which battles give you an Eau de toilette? I don't think you can buy them.

I'm practicing in multiple segments, but a single segment would probably be the one I submit. The game doesn't force you to save, fortunately, and there aren't too many random events as far as I can remember.
