It's a cool way to damage the core, but even if you find a spot where you could fire without getting hit I doubt it'd be faster because of the grenade launcher being so slow and not dealing as much damage and the Maeda SP bullets. I know you're playing on Nightmare mode, where all damage compared to New Game is knocked in half.

I figured out a way to kill it in 45 seconds, taking only one hit:
-kill one shoulder with Mongoose, regular bullets and Energy Shot. You will take only one hit, regardless of stingy criticals.
-blow off shoulder with Pyro
-kill core with 10 Maeda SP bullets.

This isn't counting the fact that I now don't have to heal after Aya gets shot by Kyle, which would be 4-5 seconds. The bad thing is that because only one shoulder is being killed, I won't have enough experience for Metabolism 2 to counter Eve's stupid magic BALLS (the core itself does not yield exp, only the rest of its body parts do). Both shoulders or the head+neck gets you enough.

Speaking of Eve's balls, I was testing one safe strategy for countering them without Metabolism: just use the Maeda SP bullets. Normally they would poison her, but when you can get critical hits, like after she rises from the center bridge, is also when the bullets will paralyze her instead. Hit her when she dives down to throw her balls and it will cancel the attack. With this you can avoid them altogether and it's easy to tell when she's going to do it. So my main weapon is Grenade Pistol and secondary is Mongoose for Eve's balls.

Now the only thing that worries me with Eve is if she spawns too many clones and eats all of my grenades. It has never happened in an actual SS but it happened very often during testing from a save.

Quote from Lex Von Crunchenson:
...blast only takes you down to 1 HP, if I remember correctly.

This is only possible with armour that resists Impact, like the Chicken Plate or EOD Suit, neither of which I'll have in the run because I'm killing Cannon Mouth in disc 1. Exp and BP is tight enough as it is and it wouldn't be worth it to grind just for the one armour.

And sorry to anyone already having blue balls waiting 2 FUCKING YEARS for this, but they will turn purple and fall off because my disc 1 went missing when I moved out and am looking to get another copy. Money spent on PE2 rising. Argh.

Would it or would it not be better/faster/more effective to trade off using different weapons between the Maeda SP bullets' poison?
I don't think so. I'll have the Grenade Pistol and M93R but neither can kill it fast enough. I'm better off saving the grenades for critical hits on Eve.

Magnum bullets won't kill the core in one cycle and I'll have to dodge the blast to avoid getting OHKO because I won't have the Chicken Plate or the Antibody spell. That will be about 3 hits per blast and at 200 HP per bullet on average, it would take 16-17 bullets to kill it (core has 3500 HP) plus dodging.

With grenades, you can only get one hit per blast but with the Grenade Pistol so slow you won't have enough time to dodge it.

Maeda SP bullets not only kill it the fastest out of the 3 but also completely avoid random head lasers, which the boss has a nasty habit of doing. Usually it does core blast+other attack in a pattern, but it will still do head lasers in between.

I'm reviving this thread too, I hope it's not a big deal : o

After PE1, I thought I could give a shot about PE2. I'm actually practicing the game based on LucianoRX run, I'm just wondering if some people runs the game nowadays (or maybe have a new record about this, I haven't found anything relevant through research). I'm actually very interested about some route changes that were discussed years ago in this thread, it was very interesting to read. I'll be updating my progression soon, I'm still trying to get a good Akropolis tower and trying different strats for No.9 discussed in this thread :p
Edit history:
Dreamboum: 2013-08-30 09:35:36 pm
Slight update ! I'm still into practice, still based on Luciano's run, it's actually really hard to be on his pace because everything is so well done and he manages to get rid of enemies like the Super Horse so easily where I'm having a lot of troubles but I'm doing good.

I also did some research, I found a TAS of Parasite Eve 2 who came out recently since it was uploaded in february 2013 in Youtube and nobody in the thread mentions it, so I guess it's somewhere between 2010 and 2013 then :p

Anyway, even if it's a TAS, a time of 1h05 is still incredible and even if I have a hard time trying to figure out all the stuff in japanese, it doesn't seem to really use some glitchy stuff or anything else, just a really good use of grenades and he's escaping from the enemies really well as expected. But still, it's a huge gap compared to LucianoRX and I just can't figure it how he's able to do it. But I really think it would be possible to be somewhat close from this time.

Now I just have to hope that there is some PE2 runners lurking in the forum or maybe some old members of this thread to try and figure this out, it was really fun to go through all the pages and it would be really nice to revive this thread again, this game deserves it Grin
SPEEDruns not SAFEruns
Hey Dreamboum,
I would love to do a run/investigate into this game more. Are you still interested in such a thing? I have the game for PSX
Yes, of course, I have been practicing quite a lot into this game these times Wink
I'm there if you have questions about it

ATM I'm using the TAS that I linked in the previous post and also this awesome run by LucianoRX, it can help you understand some mechanics of the speedrun : https://archive.org/details/ParasiteEve2_Speedrun

In my opinion, aside from some enemies like the great horse, you can be pretty constant in your runs, RNG doesn't have a huge impact in the speedrun most of the time so it should be fun to run, aside from the annoying puzzle near the end Undecided
SPEEDruns not SAFEruns
Damn man, sounds like an awesome run. I will watch the TAS in full tomorow!
Hey guys. I always liked Parasite Eve 1 & 2. After getting a copy, I wanted to made a good route, and start speedrunning it. So far I'm using a TAS video that Dream linked to play and plan. I was able to do some strats that are showed in TAS, some of them I'm still learning. So far my runs are far from being good, but soon they should get better.

I will try and re-read this topic any time soon, to find any "new" strats that could help me.
I spend some time to practice the game, and I think I'm ready to do serious run. It will be really interesting, because I wanted to copy what TAS does with used items, weapons that kind of stuff, but ofcourse its not that simple. The game in terms of fighting enemies, or picking items, are similar in TAS and my own, but at the end, its getting little tricky. For now I will be more carefully to not die at the last bosses, so I will lvl up Antibody to survive core atack and kill it faster. And after that, well its hard to say what will happend with Eve.
I would be really interested to see how it plays out, the whole backtracking process of the game and the annoying puzzles at the end of the game kinda destroyed my motivation but I would love to see someone else attempt it. And you can check LucianoRX run if you want to see how it plays out at the end, his run is also really good.
True, that puzzle are in very stupid places. My main source of planning was TAS, but I also watched LucianoRX run few times.
So far my best time is 1h and 43 min on PAL PS2. I had few freeze through the game, but I know its "normal" on PS2, and the same happend to LucianoRX. I know I can easylie improve my time, but for now I will still use save strategy.
Good luck with your PAL run. Yeah that freezing happened to me too. I lost a lot of good runs and eventually went back to PS1. By save strategy do you mean you'll be segmenting the run?

Also, do you have a link to the TAS? I'm curious to see if they used any of my strats.
Professional Second Banana
I'l love to see a completed PE2 run too - my PE1 run on the site needs some company!

Would runs from the PS3 emulation be a separate category? The game plays fine with no input lag with the PS3's upscaling and I haven't noticed any loading differences. It's gonna be a pain in the ass pulling out the PS1 and SD TV just for one game. And no room to move in my room. ;__;

Edit: never mind about the TAS. The link was above. duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh
Professional Second Banana
Nah, PS3 would be the same category unless there's some version difference that actually affects gameplay.

Nice nice :3

I'm watching the TAS now and I'll break down what's happening:
-the game is loading considerably faster than what you'd expect.
-being a TAS he's saving lots of fractions and whole seconds with optimization. (duh but I'm jotting this down anyways).
-PE spells are the same, so far. Pyro 1, Necro 1 and Energy Shot 2.

-against the glasses lady he gets a critical at the end.
-No.9 strat is a couple of seconds faster and is mine in reverse; he pumps No.9 at the first cable instead of at the end. Because of this he can't get any criticals so No.9 can keep moving. Hitting him with Pyro was deliberate so he can start moving sooner.

The optimization here is cutting down his zap animations with criticals. Killing him this way is very risky and will be the source of a lot of resets. Keep in mind that he has to stock up on ammo using this strat, meaning he has to skip the tutorial text. I don't because I bank on more crits happening at the end of the fight. I'm guessing that both his and my strats are even because of this.

-back at the PD, the runner takes the MP Boost with the Grenades for No.9 at Dryfield.

Dryfield, Day
-Water tower fight. I didn't know you could run past the first horses. I should check and see if it means you have to kill an extra pair inside. Criticals at the right time are the only way to pull this off the way he did.
-Horse ambush at the comm. This one is a pain in the ass. Sometimes a pyro will knock it down, sometimes it won't. I'd run forward so he can butt you close range, which won't knock you down and let you keep casting.
-Garage fight. Brilliant strategy. Abusing Pyro's massive hit box to squish the fat mosquitoes in one cast. I'm sure that first shot was to lure the first mosquito towards his friends before they all got fried.

-At the 2nd pass through the store I don't know why he ran past the fridges. You can skip this encounter and save 2 seconds running past the front shelves. When you reach the door, stop, turn and open it. The baby things won't notice you.

-No.9 again. It's Luciano's strat but much faster because of positioning. He's staying close to bait slash attacks, allowing him to let off another couple of Pyros. I'm not sure if it's luck or positioning that's preventing him from getting grabbed, though. The visual cue for the slash attacks lock No.9 in place, buying you enough time to move around and cast again. You need to be quick before he can lock-on and it can be tricky because both No.9's and Pyro hit boxes are very large and you can accidently hit him in the front. Because he's killed straight up with Pyros, you need to attach and use MP Boost which the runner does in the first slot.

You can match this fight without MP Boost, saving you a bit of time from attaching+using it. The idea is to Pyro 5 times straight and then get grabbed. It's possible but very hard because it requires frame precision to hit him before he can start turning. Squeeze in a few bullets of damage just to make sure he's in critical and you should be able to kill him for free.

Dryfield, Night
-Energy Shot against the rabbits. I don't know why I never thought of that.
-Killing the bats I really wasn't expecting. It's most likely for the BP and not the piss exp. (turns out it is)
-Gas Station fight is pretty cool. Abusing the Pyro's hit box again to hit both of them.

-He doesn't buy grenades and GL until he gives the petrol, meaing he has to open the inventory an extra time to equip the GL. The bats were necessary so he can afford 16 grenades.

-Flame boss dropped in 70 seconds. Abuses the camera angle so he can bait the close attacks, reducing the risk of getting hit/killed and you don't need to worry about Necro's poison being an asshole with its inconsistent timing. Positioning is VERY important because if you're not careful he will eventually swipe you. 6 Grenades are left.

Disc 2. Mines.
-Ambush outside. So this is why he needed the extra grenades. Positioning so the grenades can hit both horses. This alone has to save a crap load of time. 1 Grenade left.

-Prep for the Super Horse is very interesting. Only 4 Airburst (equipped) and 1 Grenade. I've been counting the grenades because this fight always made me nervous.

Underground
-he only buys 20 more grenades. He has enough BP for one more set but doesn't spend it. Interesting.
-Vacuum Boss destroyed in 2 rounds. Wow. It's always 3 for me. It might be the extra 50hp damage from most of his shots but I still have no idea.

Neo Ark
-sliding puzzle is hilarious.
-Generator 1 was great. Generator 2 must have a weak point somewhere because killing it in 1 grenade is ridiculous. And funny.

-Giant Bowman dropped in 60 seconds. Upgrades Energy Shot to level 3, buys Plasma and needs another MP Boost to continue Plasma-ing. Very interesting.
So it turns out knocking Eve drops the shield and is consistent compared to Necro. Your visual cue for when Eve casts another shield is when she heals the boss or you can see the muppet-like strings (man, I love this game). However, he's saving the Eau de Toilette. 4 Grenades left.

-Making Eve run to the elevator was great.
-The enemies in the store room can be avoided if you wait briefly before moving towards the door, saving 2 seconds.

-Outside with the army he buys only 100 magnum bullets.

The End
-Prep time. Equips Mongoose with regular bullets, attaches Madea and regular bullets and both Eau de Toilettes. No healing. what.
-UANMC dropped in 44 seconds. Goes straight for the head and neck instead of shoulders, getting all crits. If there is any luck involved with those crits I wouldn't try this ever.

-Eve dropped in a whopping 43 seconds. She'll go for a tackle or a dive at the start so using that to your advantage is very clever. He poisons her asap and then gets her in a paralyzed loop by hitting her during specific frames of the tackle's start up until he runs out of Maeda bullets. If she dives you need to be quick. Her vulnerable frames have Maeda bullets paralyzing instead of poisoning, in additon to critical hits. Both Eau de Toilettes are used when he has time for extra damage.

I'm not sure if Eve diving afterwards is luck but he abuses another vulnerablility period when she recovers. Then he lets loose for the kill. All crits again.
The game loads faster because it is on emulator, this is why the TAS gets a ridiculous time. Don't focus too much on it.

You kill an extra pair inside the water tower if you don't kill the two outside but it is still faster as you can get both horses in one pyro.

But yeah, the TAS is really interesting. Also too bad I cannot access your files of PE2 segments posted a few years back in this thread, I wanted to look at some of your strats ;-;
I still have them on my DVD recorder. I really should clean that out but yes I can upload them again because my internet isn't ass anymore! Well, it's less anus but still pretty good.

Thanks, and no, so far I never tried segmented run. What I meant was using save strats for last boss. After getting core opened, I run away, heal myself to full hp, cast antibody, and kill off the core. Earlier I was running and try avoiding getting hit by core laser, but with that, I know I can survive anything, as long as I have enough Madea  bullet, few times I had really bad luck, and I used all 25 on head and neck.

Quote from sshplur:

There is haha. Each shot for head and neck is crit, but even if you don't have this type of luck, its good strategy. Only problem can be what will you do when you run out of ammo, or you won't kill core in 2 cycle, thats why I'm using my strats.
And also I really like how TAS crits Eve with every shot hehe.

Quote from sshplur:

It depends on your dmg. Boss have 3000 health, so if you get lucky and always hit for 600 or more, you can kill him in 5 shots

I'm trying to copy this one, but ofcourse, its really hard to do. I'm always buying more granades before CD 2, but even with them I really need to practice this fight more. Last time, it went really bad and I was 1 min behind my time, but in the end game crash at the Neo Ark Sad

About crash, before speedrunning the game, I didn't had any problems. but after, game start to crash on 2 spots, when I change CD's and when I enter Neo Ark. First crash I get fixed by loading the game, soft reset, and the starting the game. But I haven't figured how to fix second crash.
The problem with Super Horse is the hit boxes. They're generous in this game but it's this particular fight where they can really backfire; Air Burst hitting the head but not the barrel or the boss not taking hits from both the barrels and Air Bursts simultaneously (this is where the extra grenades come in). I generally try/pray it goes well but I'm more concernced with just killing it and moving on with my life. This boss is such a bum pimple.

With the UANMC, I'd recommend going for one of its shoulders instead. It cuts down almost all of the luck required and you'll take only the first hit from the head, even from bad luck with criticals. Once you've killed the shoulder, cast Pyro to blow it off. This will open the core immediately. The important thing is not to move or Pyro's massive hitbox will hit the head. Once the core's open you can kill the boss in two core blasts.

And about the PS2, you're freezing in the same places I was. Sounds like an emulator problem with the console and I'd recommend switching to PS1 or PS3 asap to save you a lot of trauma and headaches. I dreaded Neo Ark every time I got there. And then I went to bed when it froze. *fetal position.

I should go back and add time stamps to my other post at some point.

I never though about killing UANMC other way, although I remember trying to kill all his parts, trigger the core in different way. Will give it a try and see how it will goes.
About Papa Horse (somehow I like to call him this way) like you said, its really strange fight. TAS strats with barrel is nice, but hard to do it everytime. What I found out is (I didn't see any one talking about it), when you first time make him fall, and use Necrosis on him, next time when you make him fall, you can get lucky and stun kill him.
It works this way, you hit him with granades, make him fall and when his standing animation is played, he get hit by Necrosis and he fall for second time, giving you enough time to reload and repeat. This way you will use more granades then with barrel, but if you are lucky, you can kill him pretty fast.

I would like to change to PS3 or PS1, but I don't have money to buy one, and also my PS1 is broken, so maybe I will swap to ePSXe and use emulator if I get any more freeze on Neo Ark. Or try and look for cheap PS1 hehe.

EDIT: I tried this new UANMC strategy and I must say its better. I died few times, but overall its faster then old strategy. I timed it and with old one it took around 1:10 - 1:30 min to kill, and with your strategy sshplur its only 50 - 60 sec. Depends on how many crits you will get on shoulder, you can save overall from 10 to 30 or more second. (for me it's around 20 - 30 sec faster)

EDIT 2: Damn, I never expected to have so many problems speedrunning this game. I spend whole day trying to play PE2 on emulator, but each time game crash after Akropolis Tower. I tried many PAL version, but nothing worked. The only version that is working with emulation is NTSC. Now I can: play on PS2 and hope the crash won't happend on Neo Ark, or keep playing NTSC version (which real copy I don't have). I think I will keep playing with NTSC version, and try looking for cheap PS1.

Hello,

I've just finished a run of PE2 any% bad ending, Here is the run.

I hope you will enjoy it.

For the strats I mostly watched the supergamer "wr" on twitch.tv and I modified some "strats".

edit: btw senvy GG for your barely sub 2h30 on Beyond Good and Evil
Hey, nice to see your run. After I got sub 2:30 on BG&E I wanted to focus on this game once again. Sadly I think I lost all my split for this game ( consol and emulator ) so I can't compare them to your time.
Few minutes ago I just ended my "practice" run on PS3, need to recall the route and stuff.

About playing with emu, its fine, but emulator are very inaccurate comparing to the consol. Once I compared my PS2 time to psx emulator, and I got around -10 min at last split. Thats why most people don't care about getting any time on emu. Practice are nice, but thats all.

I hope in few days I will start streaming Parasite Eve 2 again, but for now its just too hot Sad
Actually I played on emulator because supergamer played on emulator too and because if I want to run it on my ps2 I would have to rebuy the game (my old fat ps2 scratched the game that I can't pass the 1st loading screen QQ) and buy a capture card ... (I think it'll be better, for me, to rebuy a ps2 slim ntsc and a ntsc PEII) because if I have understood PAL games are slower than NTSC games right?
So yeah I think I'll keep practising on the game for a while and then see if I'll buy stuff for speedrunning this game ^^
