DS Dictator
Quote from LLCoolDave:
Yeah, the game isn't even out officially and we're already discussing how to beat it fast. That's just the spirit.

Well, I don't exactly have the right equipment to record a proper quality run. I think my digicam is good enough to make sample videos and stuff, but I don't expect them to be of good enough quality to be accepted as a run.

On the other hand, I don't exactly have the skills to create a proper run.

In any case, let's discuss the route. The overworld route should be fairly obvious (oh, and spoilers ahead if you didn't read the topic):

1-1
1-2 Secret Exit
Grab Blue Shell from Item Shroom House
1-Fortress Secret Exit
1-Cannon
5-1
5-2 Secret Exit
5-3
5-Ghost House Secret Exit
5-Cannon
World 8

I don't exactly know how the red item boxes move on the overworld map. If they can be controlled in some way and there is a way to always have one be on 1-Fortress (or if you just want to be lucky, heh), we can skip the Item Shroom House as the Red Item Box in 1-Fortress should always contain a blue shell.

The blue shell should also be kept through all of World 5, and in 8-1 at least. 8-1 is quite difficult with it, but it's worse without. I can't exactly tell how to go on, as this is were I'm stuck right now, trying to find a good route to get through 8-1 with the shell. Way too many holes in this one, heh.

World 1 and World 5 can be done rather fast and straight forward, I'll try to get a video up later if the cam produces reasonable quality videos.

Take This! Ultra Frisbee-Disk Attack!
If somebody gets good enough at the game in a short amount of time, this would be a good reference for starting a run. People will probably be trying to run the game or just beat it as quick as possible for fun when they get it, it seems to be a good game.

I think I'm missing it now but, how is this being recorded? A Video Camera zoomed into the screens?
http://www.metroid2002.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4819

This is only for the DS, don't try this with a GBA or something and expect it to be accepted when the GBA already HAS the Game Boy Player to work with...
I got the game today.  The red blocks seem to be random in their movements and items; I'm betting those are based on something like the time of your last level in their movements.  I don't know if their contents can be controlled.  It may or may not be feasible to control those variables in a non-emulated run.

Those lousy blue shells are always impossible to get when you actually need them... same goes for the tiny mushrooms.
Well, the red item boxes seem to be too random to be reliable. In any case, I often get one in 1-2, and it often contains a shell. If not, look at the world map after beating the level, if there is a box in 1-Fortress go there, if not grab one from the Mushroom house. World 5 is breezy easy with the shell, World 8, well, takes some training. The actual hard levels are 8-2 (annoying enemies), 8-Fortress (Shell is totally unsuited), 8-3 (Tend to swim into a Cheep-Chepp that hides behind some coins, despite knowing the level by heart). 8-Castle isn't too bad, just getting past bone bowser with it isn't all too easy. 8-5 to 8-8 cause no real trouble except for accidently falling into a pit, and you should switch to double fire flower on 8-Castle2 for the rest of the game, as the shell doesn't help in bowser's castle anyway.
How does the blue shell compare to running for speed?

Anyways, using a blue shell for 8-1 would seem very risky to do during a Single Segment run. For a segmented run, it would work fine since you could just reset if you screwed up.

I found it safer to run through the level. I usually can get 1/2 - 3/4 of the way through 8-1 without getting hit while going as fast as I can. Picking up some powerups would allow you to avoid death in the likely case you do get hit.

I don't have a DS Lite or the necessary stuff to record a run for this though, though it is a run I would have wanted to do if I had the necessary items.
I think the shell is about the same as running in its speed, but it might be a little slower from the looks of it.  The advantage, of course, is that you wouldn't have to jump over enemies and lose time there.
Once you know where to jump, 8-1 isn't too dangerous.
I'll see if I can find out if the shell is slower than running today.
hey, my friend showed me a video where someone does something to make a regular DS have as much light as the DS Lite. Ill ask him for the link and ill post it.

Thought these would be of interest.. yoinked off the Gamefaqs Cess Pool that is the New Super Mario Bros. boards.  Individual level runs of the first three levels.
The 1-1 and 1-2 runs are pretty much identical to my route, except that I have to take the secret pipe in 1-2, so I have to slow down on the last seesaw, that's all. You're not even coming near 1-3 on a speedrun.
Speed Running Joy-bringer
I didn't think Mario could run that fast. All the videos I saw must have been him walking...

Well, I'd recommended at least getting a Fire Flower, and timely shoot enemies out of the way. I know I know really nothing of the game yet, but there must be a lot that can be done.

I'd estimate the lower bound for a speedrun of this game to be around 30 minutes. Some of the World 8 levels are quite long and I don't think they could be finished in under a minute each.

1) 1-1
2) 1-2 (Secret Exit)
3) 1-Tower (Secret Exit)
(Hope to get a red ? block with a blue shell; if not, restart)
4) 1-Cannon
5) 5-1
6) 5-2 (Secret Exit)
7) 5-3
8) 5-Ghost House (Secret Exit)
9) 5-Cannon
10) 8-1
11) 8-2
12) 8-Tower
13) 8-3
14) 8-4
15) 8-Castle
16) 8-5
17) 8-6
18) 8-7
19) 8-8
20) 8-Tower2
21) 8-Final Castle

This game is a true masterpiece. It combines the best elements from SMB, SMB3, SMW, and SM64.
Here's my current best time remaining for 1-1 and 1-2 for reference purposes.

1-1: 370(373 is possible, but that route loses you time. 370 is the perfect time.)
1-2: 352 for the Secret Exit.(I know this isn't near perfect though)

And Blue Shell is slower than running.

this is the first Mario game I've liked since Mario 64. I'm so damn grateful they made this game.

Read the Gamefaqs boards.  It's depressing.

"ITZ TOO EZ!"  "WHEREZ YOSHI!?"  "I"M STUPID!"
Indeed. :>
yes, a man carrying a gimp
It's too easy, what are they talking about?!  The last boss of World 2 was so hard for me at first that I used the cannon in World 1 to skip it.
dinosaur from the past
Fireballs take out any boss except world 6 and 7's without any sort of difficulty whatsoever.

And yeah, I was wondering why the hell LLCoolDave was like "Okay, so we're going to use the Blue Shell the whole game, because." It is of course required for the early secret exit, and it might be for 5's cannon too (don't remember) but it's probably a really good idea to switch to fireballs for later towers.

And where is Yoshi?!  ;p
Now a hit show on the CW

Shoot... I want to play this game, but don't got funds right now.

Hell from what I saw, this game would look way better being speeded through.

One question though. How would thinks work out if it was two players? Do they co-operate or is it a whole different thing?
