1-4 (Coin C is the quickest but takes a few seconds to get it)
1-5 Coins A + B
1-S Coins A (requires big and triple jump to save time) + B

Total Coins: 9 (with small time loss 11 coins)

2-1 all 3 coins
2-2  0 i'm afraid
2-3 Secret Star coin B - Use fire flower to defeat P.Plant
2-A Coin A only
2-S Coin B (takes the least time to get out of the 3)

Total Coins: 14 (17 if you prepare for small time loss)

3-1 w/ Blue Shell

3-A (5 Coins)  Collect Coin B on this level

3-2 Secret Collect Coin B
3-B Collect Coins B and C, they take around 3 seconds each.
3-C Collect Coin A, Unsure about Coin C uses a switch but faster exit

Around 20 star coins here - 5 = around 15

5-1 Get all 3 coins

5-2 Secret, 5-3, 5-G, 5-4 I would use this route because:
Less levels, no autoscroll tower level, no star coins paying
5-2 Secret: No coins
5-3 Coins A and B
5-G No coins
5-4 Auto scroller so 3 coins here.
or
5-2 or 5-A (5 Coins), 5-T, 5-B Secret (5 Coins): It has a Autoscrolling Tower level here.

You;ll need to enter the 3-Mushroom house (achieved after completing 3-A) to get a reserve Mini Mushroom. It does save the risk failing to get one from the roulete block in 5-Castle.

5-S Using the mini-shroom before last fireball hit trick to quickly defeat Petey and access World 7.

I'll edit these later to collect more coins for optional segments saves.

Nice. Also, for red Mushroom Houses, hold direction and run button from the start, and when you gain control, jump so you hit the right edge of the block (anywhere underneath the screw). Quick, easy and reliable way to get a Blue Shell every time.

(Sorry for double post)

It's my birthday today and I'm getting a new Black DS Lite.
Secondly when I get a job I'll buy an external harddrive (round 250-500GB+) to store the raw files of the 100% segmented run.

The PC i use for DS videos is in a 'No boot File name' error. It will be fixed soon I hope.

If this has been addressed before, my apologies, but I don't have a lot of time today.  World 1 fortress/tower/whatever we call it...I haven't been able to do so, not sure if it's even possible outside of TAS, or even in TAS...but does anyone know if you can clear the first set of closing blocks before they close?  I keep ALMOST getting it, but I get squashed at the top of them.  Just wondering.

The very first pair of closing blocks is impossible as far as I know.  But it doesn't matter as far as I know because after the next 3 sets you'll end up next to the 4 vertical blocks + one horizontal block below them about to be blocked (so you wait til they open again).

I'm finishing off my last test route and then I might start it off properly.

I started off testing out some filming from my new DS Lite and I finished segment 1 too. There are a few reasons why it may need to be rerecorded again because:
The focus "could" not be perfect yet (but it may be until I get my PC fixed and see it on Adobe Premiere).
I might put the 1/8th inch mini plug cable the wrong way round which may leads to an high pitch noise.

Gaming errors.
Small errors in 1-2 Alt exit by using koopa shell trick to collect star coin.

1-3 A quick triple jump after getting the 1st Star coin and fall straight to the ground to perform the Triple Jump to get the 2nd coin. The third coin needs practise as a quick way to get it is to jump on to the ? box and another jump to the coin meaning an awkward double jump needs to be performed.

1-house. An great trick by Serris. Run underneath the right screw to always get a blue shell.

1-Tower. On the level where there is a green pipe you can mess around for a few seconds as the main route (contains the star coin) is temporary blocked with the block platforms close to the left not forming the timed jumps from one block to the next.
After that set it's possible to wall jump one wall to the other higher wall but it only saves minimal time and difficult to perform especially the hard effort you've been doing in the previous 4 exits (3 levels). The time should be around 424 as Bowser Junior gets KO'd.

I may upload them onto Youtube and put 'GLINK EDIT'. If I finish the run and be more fortunate to get published by SDA, I'll remove the GLINK EDIT videos and reupload the SDA video(s).

100% Progress blog:

-First 3 segments are done.
-My video editing PC isn't back yet Sad
-There are a few more tweaks in my 100% run route.
-Possibly 35+ segments.
-Will be played as Luigi - This is a cosmetic change just like the Justin Bailey code from the NES Metroid in other words Luigi has the same stats as Mario in this game.

Few questions to Nate + other admins:
-Sending Raw files to you by Torrents will be a good idea, I just need to work out how to make one, make it active, (for you to download) etc.
- Because of this I might post small Raw samples of the clips from Segment 1 on a video sharing site, including:
1) A file Select to an Intro clip.
2) World 1-1
This could be an experiment if Anri-Chan is possible for a screen change transistion. Luckily during a screen change (show top screen, to bottom screen) there are a few seconds of pure black on both screens making a good illusion of video editing (the viewers would barely notice the dual screen effect)

I did see your Single Segment run + I was really impressed. I would do it myself if I get good runs from World 8 + Bowser's Castle.

Getting back to playing New Super Mario Bros now.

This time I'm making a new route which will take advantage of collecting the Mini Shroom or Blue Shell from the Red ? Boxes.
This would save even more time than collecting it from the Red Mushroom House. There will be some instances that I will need to get an item from the Red House to enter the level's secret exit (5-B is a good example).

Sadly this also means that the number of segments would increase from 35 to nearly 45.

The saving system is interesting:
Before you complete 8-Bowser's Castle
You can only save by:
*Completing a X-Tower, X-Castle or a Warp Cannon that takes you to a world you haven't been for the first time.

Example:
Entering the 1-Cannon to end up in World 5, it asks me to save the game but if you also enter the 2-Cannon to end up in World 5, it does not ask me to save the game.

Or
*Paying up a sign for new courses or Shroom Houses.

So it's basically save points but you can only use it once (meaning there shouldn't really be a 0.5 second penalty for each save).

If you complete 8-Bowser's Castle

*You can save at any time.

The only segment that I save after completing 8-Bowser is paying up my last set of star coins on the unlockable touch screen backgrounds. Then Mario/Luigi does a victory dance and the save messages pops up asking me if I should save or not (which I should do then go to the menu and show proof that my file is now 100% complete).

Since spending the Star Coins is part of the game's definition of 100% completion, I agree on ignoring the save penalty.  But that's just me.  You could also point out the fact that the game takes about 3 seconds to actually save that are already being included each time you do so.

If you have a layout of your 100% route, I would love to go over it with you.  I have done some messing around with it myself, and maybe I could help you out some?

Can't help for the route, but for the sound quality, I think there is a trick that consist of linking the hearing plug of the DS to the mic plug of the camera.

I will post the route up soon, just been really busy in the last week from the Pkmn Shaymin event to the Published SM64DS run (editing and spltting up the published run to upload onto Youtube).
Even though I've never timed my test runs, my guess is that an 100% run is done in sub 2:15.

I also think that there should be 3 categories including:

A 3 star file run (All exits & cannons, all coins collected & payed and Bowser's Castle)
An Bowser Castle cleared run without Cannon Warps (1 Star Warpless)
and
An Bowser Castle cleared run with Cannon Warps (1 Star with Warps)

It can be Segmented or Single Segment (meaning a possilbe 6 runs on the site).

To myself, I find a 2 star run a bit pointless mainly because you'll need to enter all of the cannon Warps and you'll need some coins (I think 40+) to enter all of the hidden levels.

I know it's TAS but it's news that we can TAS DS games now. It will be useful to experiment Ground Pound cancels and Wall Jump glitching (a wall jump like the NES games)  as Mini Mario/Luigi.

The emulator is in beta form and it does require huge amount of virtual memory to load it up. Fortunately there's Youtube links posted

I've posted on the forums that there's possible improvement including the flagpoles (facing to the left does finish the course faster) and constant triple jumping as Shell Mario is faster than Shell Spinning.

EDIT: I've made an extra segment after 1-2 ALT exit by paying the green mushroom house for a few reasons.

*It saves me from watching the 40 second cutscene all of the time
*The next 2 levels does have some tough time savers, especially 1-Tower.
*Doesn't make me waste 5 minutes to find out that the Red ? Box doesn't end on a certain level after completing 1-Tower.

Worst case scenario, you can always get another "Crack 'Shroom."

Getting another Mega Shroom will take too much time.
Lakithunder does dive in quite frequently so he'll be down quite quickly.

If I can hit him with 3 fireballs and then finish off with a ground pound that would take him out in 1 cycle.

Another note is that you can't control the camera (L & R shoulder buttons) and Lakithunder is mostly on screen all of the time.

If he dives down, to the other side of the room, I could jump on top of him then bounce to the wall, wall jump afterwards followed by a timed ground pound to finish him off.

I've completed my 5th segment (plus World 1 is fully cleared) and the total time so far (estimated SDA timing) is...

14 minutes 13 seconds


Now I'm on world 2 and on this segment I achieve 6 exits, followed by a mushroom house save.
Then I test the next segment to see if the Red ? Box lands on 2-Tower (after completing 2-3) , if it fails then sadly have to redo segment 6 :(.

Only when the run is completed & published. It raises anticipation.
My encodes tends to desync but Nate's SDA published ones works well. Plus it's going to have an accurate Stat ID at the start on each segment.
Would a run using no wrap and no item be a any% or a low%?
