Regarding the 6-4 run. You were Super Mario so why did you wait for the final flame spinner when you could have just gone through it to save possibly 1-2 seconds.
I hadn't noticed that.  After re-doing the level, I noticed that does save time.
One thing that I think would be neat eventually would be speed videos of every single stage individually, timed by the game's timer rather than in real minutes and seconds.

Am I right that that probably would not be accepted?
We're doing it for SMW so I don't see how NSMB is different.  We still haven't worked out timing, but individual level runs are very much so allowed provided you do every level.
dinosaur from the past
Radix seems to reject timing by a game's timer if the units aren't actual seconds, however.
Just so you know I don't have any of the equipment, or the will, so I am not doing a run like that, I just thought it would be neat.

Good luck with Mario World.

  Hey guys, how are ya?
This is my first post on SDA although I'm a long time lurker/ watcher, and I'm on gamefaqs and other nintendo forums.

Anyway, about 10 minutes ago I just completed the final castle with 695 left as small mario, no items, and although doubtful, came on here to see if theres a chance a single level run can be uploaded (yeh right?)

It's damn hard filming DS runs, but here it is, hope you guys enjoy and learn from it in your speed run attempts.

Oh and heres a video of me singing the mario theme >_>

Your thoughts?

Why oh WHY did I do this?

Yeah, sorry, there are some policies about how a DS video has to be recorded to be accepted, like it has to be recorded from a DS Lite for one thing.  Also, unless they make a big exception to their rules, single-level videos are only accepted if you have a complete set of all the levels.

But finishing with 695 or 698 time left is very impressive.  I've tried hard and my best is 685 left.  I bet that you or Ialokin (StuckInAPlate) would have the skills to get a full run of this game accepted.

Has to be recorded from a DS lite? That's interesting.

Well the run posted in my second link is 700 if you wanted a look, and my best is 702

Now that its almost the holidays here in Australia I might muck around with a speed run, but I've never done anything other than SSBM break the targets, So I'm an SDA noob.
They think the quality will be better off a DS Lite screen.  And they might require the video to show both screens.

I sure don't mean to discourage you.  And WOW, looks like you beat StuckInAPlate's 701 that I thought was almost godly.
Here is a speed run of level 8-1.  It's bad quality, but you can still tell whats going on.

Enjoy! Grin
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
For 1-1. 370 definately is NOT the best time. I have been doing a challenge where you crouch the entire level (and just jump), and I can get 370 like that. Wink My estimate for 1-1 is more around 373 (even without the pipe). That video on youtube obviously isn't the best that can be done. I've mostly been doing the crouching challenge but I'll try speedrunning a bit and see what I can do. As for the whole blue shell thing, it is a whole lot slower than running and IMO should only be used in 1-Tower to get the secret exit. You can get one easily by jumping right when you see the Mushroom in the houses (I can do it every time if I pause it). Also one thing I noticed, you run REALLY fast if you can get a star somewhere, if it isn't slower to hit the box (it seems like there are secret ones in every level) and get the star it may pay off.

Running straight through isn't the best it can be done?

That's right. 373 is the fastest it can be done by taking the warp pipe. 370 otherwise(?), 369 with the star.

And nice 8-1 video there! It's tempting to try a full game speedrun but there is too much room for error for it to be decent/worth watching, at least with me playing anyway  :-/

Also, predicted max for the final castle is 704 (maybe), with 703 definately possible.
fuck you i wont do what you tell me
yeah, there's tons of room for error. Personally, i found the first 7 worlds to be a complete breeze (i still am disappointed that they left out a pipe world). then i come to 8-1 and im like "HOLY CRAP!" and i havent gotten past it. Tongue

mind you, i only tried it once because its my brothers' game...

Hrm I just recorded my first single segment attempt. It's really terrible with a few deaths, finishing in about 32 minutes. It does however give some rough idea of what to aim for.

Youtube won't let me upload it for length though. Anywhere else it can be viewed easily?

Try Google Video.

Alright guys, here it is.
It's a pretty poor first attempt, but it's under 30 minutes.

I uploaded it to google video but it got lost along the way somewhere  :-/ so it's on youtube in 3 parts.

Even if I almost perfected every level in decent speed run, I don't think there's any chance SDA would accept it anyway for quality purposes. Has there been any successfully submitted DS vids so far?

I think I found the page with rules regarding DS recording quality.

I for one hope you can get something accepted.

sweet stuff.  i'm fairly impressed...the vids aren't perfect obviously but the game hasn't been out for long either.

my brother bought this game, because i told him he'd like it and i probably wouldn't.  i beat it last night; it's pretty good i guess.  mostly the mini mushroom.  mega mushroom caused me most of the weirdest deaths ever...jesus christ.  also, 8-tower2 is in my uninformed opinion the worst 2d platformer level ever.  i didn't think anything would ever beat s3's cnz act 2 but...HELL

in fact world 8 generally pissed me off because i couldn't get anywhere without breaking down and using the fire flower.  of course now that i have save anywhere i can clean up my mini-mario game easily.

Here's a post I made relating to blue shell usage directed at Dark_Link_5 who is attempting a speed run. All the best to him.

"Yeh, that was the point I was trying to bring up a few posts up, in that complying with such strict guidelines on a handheld ends up compromising the gameplay itself, and of course quality gameplay is the whole point of a speed run, is it not? Hopefully something will work itself out.

So you're going to do a single segment run without the blue shell? That's very brave, and if you can pull it off, my hat goes off to you.

What I will say though, is that its about 2 seconds slower per 30 seconds (in -game seconds) using the blue shell, and on 8-3 you're bound to save a fair few in game seconds as it's a lot faster. Along with that, using the blue shell for the open air level 8 stages is a lot more risk-free (though less impressive). Another thing, in the level 8 tower, small mario can make the gap in the spike passage, while the blue shell has to wait.

Good luck. I know I'll be using the blue shell for the whole game (except for the last two levels) if I get around to attempting a quality speedrun."
hey does anyone know how to locate the secret exit in the world 3 ghost house.  i can't unlock world 6.  please help Smiley

why is the koopa shell the preferred item? i always use the fire flower and can get through just as fast.

-the ghost house in W3:

when you get to the last area (hitting the block for the switch to pop out), hit the switch and run back up the stairs and down the other side to the other door that has just appeared. you have at most 1 second of screw-ups to make it on time.

Yeah, I've never been able to figure that out. Not saying you're all big foofy liars, cause it seems like you've actually played around, but I'd still like to hear the reasons.
