I've been following your videos, askarian, and they are all very efficient.  Great job!  (Your recently posted segmented run is also awesome, Flip!)

For your final video, here's a trick for the Shake King that wasn't used in the speedrun:

When SK is lying dazed on the ground, instead of grabbing/shaking/throwing him, use your Earthshake Punch.  This will flip him and reset his stun timer, but, more importantly, he'll skip the next attack in his pattern.  You can do this repeatedly, and can therefore cherry pick what attacks you want him to use (provided you've memorized his pattern).  Unfortunately, in the second half of the fight, you only reset his stun timer -- skipping moves in his sequence only works in the first half of the fight.

Speedrun application:
When he does his second screen-dashing attack, after body slamming him 5 times to knock him out of the wall, use your Earthshake Punch before throwing him.  He'll skip his long quadruple ground pounding move, and immediately do the earthquake attack that usually follows.

Non-speedrunning application:
During the second phase, I'm horrible at avoiding the randomly-aimed, slow-moving energy balls wihle simultaneously stomping SK as he dashes across the screen.  So, when I counter his previous earthquake attack, I repeatedly Earthshake a few times to delay his actions.  That way, by the time he does his 3 dashes across the screen, the wandering electric orbs have dissipated.

awesome, i'll definitely play around with that and try to find the fastest way. going to try and finished 5-s3 and the shake king by the end of this weekend -- it's a lot harder to find time to do these now that i'm back at school. i hope to submit them before october.
100% runs=great to watch
Indeed, a rather nice segmented run with good commentary.  Thanks for the hard work!

5-s3 boogie mansion (2:28) -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Op8wpSg7EOo
it's possible to dash jump over the enemies at 1:18 rather than hitting the bandinero but i couldn't do that consistently and this is a 2:28.849. so i'm happy.

redoing my bad ones before i do shake king and submit.

1-b rollanratl battle (1:17) -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiOXfXQSTE8
found a new strat for this one so i was able to drop it by a full 13 seconds. don't expect my other improvements to be that big. :P

This rules.

Also are you going to take 1-2 back since it's my only real contribution (besides the seg'd run) and make the whole table property of arkarian?

thanks. will be cool to see this in a full run.

yep. that one's next in fact.

Just FYI I'm preparing my dramatic response.

shaved 4 seconds off 1-3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK0yNBP_7Ng

this'll probably be my biggest improvement beside rollanratl. tons of stuff i didn't know about when i did it the first time. the only mistake in this one is dashing into the bandinero at 1:34 (i meant to jump over him). doesn't matter here though since it's a 2:24.811 and hitting the bandinero only cost .567 seconds.

also found this cute thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izDx-ZKDdqE

lol that's cool, too bad it's not any faster though.

I have a couple of recommendations for when you redo 2-3.  The first being that in the room two before the merfle, I watched our vids side by side and mine is actually faster.  Yours does look cool though, with the intentional damage from standing in the lava.  Also, and I'm pretty sure you know this.  Take the bottom route on the escape.  My escape is faster than yours and I'm collecting coins =P

I'm going through and rewatching all of your videos right now for the purposes of preparing for my ss attempts for marathon practice and also to try and help find timesavers.

Edited to fix ambiguity.

yeah lol rewatching them now my method is pretty dumb. what you did looks ideal so i'm not sure why i tried to be fancy. thanks.

definitely. no idea why i thought the upper route was faster. i'm just a dumbass.
think you got the times mixed up though -- mine's more than 3 seconds faster anyway (since you were getting coins). i wouldn't have kept it if it weren't. :P

lol yeah the timer counts down.  duh
gamelogs.org
ok unless there's something i'm missing, the bottom route is actually not faster. i haven't been able to break 1:43 even once. it's still worth redoing though because of that second room before the merfle room.
1-Up!
Sure enough, I thought I had the videos synced when I watched side by side earlier but apparently I didn't

well you collected coins which i thought would account for the difference in times. but even when i go through the blocks as fast as possible i always fall short of 1:43.

it's no big deal though because the upper route isn't any harder. there's one really annoying dash jump (onto the second dasherator) in the lower route that i'm glad i won't have to do.

2-3 redo (2:22) -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGWzTukRXT8
1-Up!
That's a great redo of 2-3.  Also it really makes me want to skip that golden enemy.  Also that reminds me that one other thing I need to do before starting my SS attempts is refine the coin route.  Like I said in my audio commentary, I like my coin route but I don't think it's perfect.

If ANYBODY has any suggestions for improvements to the coin route, please speak up now.

1-2 redo (1:48) -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhKAevsbhDk

believe it or not i am still planning on finishing these. just never had the time/desire until now. :P

1:47 should definitely be possible -- you'd just need to jump into every cannon/pipe as soon as you touch them -- but i'm not going to go insane trying to get it atm. something i can work on later.

topic revival

if anything, I want to kind of work on a 100% run for this game; if it turns out to be too long or something for me, I'll end up posting some IL strats/routes for it anyways Tongue

I'm gonna assume 100% definition would be 100% stages, treasure, and missions, since it's on the map screen and the file screen?
SEGA Junkie
I doubt it'd be any longer than 100% Return to Dreamland Tongue

This is my new project too. Probably any% SS, possibly 100%, who knows?

I got some route videos up for 100%:

Aboard the Sweet Stuff:

Stonecarving City:

Whoopsy Desert:

More details are in the respective video info. I spent probably an hour on each level, so in terms of execution, they're pretty bad; the main goal of these videos, though, are to just show off my coin routes and such, and these videos accomplish that. These first few levels are very simple, so I'm pretty sure I have the best possible consistent coin routes for them.

Let me know how they look in terms of the coin routes; if there are any possible improvements you can think of, let me know! For now, I'll post another update once I finish up world 1 (the secret levels are gonna be painful... =x)
<(^_^)>
Foulwater Falls 100%:

Foulwater Falls requires two trips, more info in the youtube video.

Run-Down Pyramid 100%:

And that's basically all the main levels in world 1. I'll procrastinate on get to the secret levels... eventually...

I have more videos for tonight.

Just Plains:

Wavy Waters, cuz we obviously need a lot of routing help for this not-such-a-sidescroller:

Mt. Lava Lava

To note, I'm very happy with my Mt. Lava Lava run. The only noteable mistake that costs time was a trick I found out that flip/arkarian don't use in their runs. It's at 1:55, where I bounce off of a bandinero to get on the platform without having to shake the ground. It's probably not very useful in 100% since you have to land on it blind, but in any%? Definitely a time-saver.

I hate this level

This one's fun though

Also I'm not sure if people would rather I keep posting each time I have a batch of updates, or just post several at once, per week, or something like that? I know that mike89 is stealing strats using my videos to help with his any% routing so it'd probably be more helpful if I post immediately, but I'm not sure if the moderators are ok with me constantly posting; can someone let me know?

On another note, I have level 3-2 and 3-3 fully routed for 100%, I just need to practice a bit then record videos for them. I'll see if I can get videos for those and 3-4 by tomorrow.

Also mike, do you have anything notes and such about how far you've routed out any% (or, what specifically in flip's route have you changed so far?) or are you not too far in yet?

EDIT: I also did a test speedrun of 100% for the first two worlds, and goodness, it's gonna be hard. A single mistake can mean starting over an entire level. It took me roughly 1 hour 15 minutes, though a lot of that is from restarting 3-4 parts of levels, so I can probably say a decent run of the first two worlds 100% (without secret levels) would be an hour, maybe under it? I can easily see 100% of this full game being roughly 4-5 hours.
SEGA Junkie
My planning for any% so far is "find a better map route". Thankfully, arkarian's awesome ILs still exist on the previous page so I have a really solid "best case" base to compare Flip's route and my own test runs against. At this stage I'm quite confident 1-2-3-5-4 is faster than the default by around ten seconds, but with any luck 1-2-4-5-3 will be the preferred route. Just got to map all of the coin changes out now.
