Took over this thread (thanks Puwexil!) so everything is easier to keep track of and to update the title.

I started working on a 100% segmented run for this game, which is going to be a pretty massive (but fun/hellish) project. The 100% definition goes by the file select screen, i.e. clear every stage, every stage's mission, and get all 3 treasures for each stage. This includes boss refights, so there'll be some postgame content.

Here's the full youtube playlist of the WIP: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3pBMjeS6rYhGHdE10CL3Zia-PGr-7mhl

Here's my pastebin with my WIP commentary that I plan to submit once I'm done with this project: http://pastebin.com/ehLCSBjH

Timing for each segment begins from first meaningful control, including menus, until the save indicating the end of the segment.

Thread title:
SEGA Junkie
I'd like to indicate my interest. This is one of those games that I've consciously thought "this would make a good speedrun" but haven't given more than a cursory thought to planning. A run through ignoring all the treasures and missions (except, well, the timed ones) would probably be my preference, though I'd end up watching ILs too. They'd just largely be a pain cause you'd have to set the level up in some cases.

This game is practically made for speedrunning. Good choice, but can be kind of frustrating in parts. A normal runthrough wouldn't be too difficult, but God forbid if someone did 100% in this. Tongue

Edit: Also yea, iirc there are a couple of missions that can't be done in one go, but I haven't played the game in awhile. So, I'll probably have to check later, if I get the chance.

By "normal runthrough," do you mean any% IL's or a segmented run of the game?  I still maintain that coins are too few and definately too far between to make a segmented run as enjoyable to watch.  I ran through Area 1 last night (practicing, not recording) and did the 4 levels back-to-back, going out of my way to grab diamonds I knew were nearby and I still came up around 40K, 10K short of even purchasing the Area 2 map.  I imagine the 200K for Area 5 would require playing some levels twice or spending entirely too long on every single level.

That said, with some help I wouldnt mind discussing possible coin routes, I'm just not particularly interested in doing that run right now.

Here are a few examples: levels are named Area#.Level#, secret levels are named Area#.PreviousLevel#.SecretLevel# ie 1.2.1 for Disturbing Tomb and 1.3.1 for Gurgle Gulch.

1.2 -- destroy all bomb blocks and time mission
3.4.2 -- defeat the golden enemy and dont defeat any enemies.
5.3 -- dont defeat any enemies and defeat 5 enemies with icicles.

not to mention a horde of levels where the coin mission requires too much scavaging during the run back to make the time mission possible.

What I meant by normal would be an actual speedrun of the game, segmented if need be. When you mean IL, do you mean kind of like using a finished file to go through each level as fast as possible?

Even though getting all the coins necessary to finish the game (500k + the 1000 in the beginning of course) might be a little boring and strenuous to obtain, I'm sure there is a way to do it speedily without turning it into a 100% run (just doing everything anyway, since that would produce the most money). Being 10k short of your goal at the end of map one isn't THAT bad, considering the amounts increase in the levels per world, to compensate for the increase in the cost of the map. If there isn't a coin route that can be made up, that allows you to get the money faster than just repeating one level, then repeating one level is your only alternative here. So, what I mean is, just go through each world individually the way you did with map one, and see how much you come up short at the end of each, and that'll give you an idea as to where you can make up the money from there. Another alternative, if you have to (although the most boring), is to spend more time in one world or another gathering as many coins as possible, as quickly as you can, and thus taking away the grunt work from other worlds, since there are sometimes shorter levels that tend to still give a good amount of money, despite the size.

You said you wouldn't really work on this without someone to help with a route. Unfortunately, right now I can only give little bits of info here and there since I haven't played the game in months, and I'm very out of practice with it. With other runs of my own I need to do, as well as looking for a permanent job in real life, I would probably be able to help more if more people became interested in this run, as there is a lot of ground to cover with obtaining all of this money. Whenever you get around to this though, if you do, I wish you the best of luck.
1-Up!
Yeah, sorry, for any% IL's I have a (nearly) 100% file and for 100% IL's I'm working on creating a file that has every level completed but 0 chests collected (I've only done the first area, so far).  I then have a backup of that file so that I can recopy and make multiple attempts.

And perhaps I came across wrong earlier.  I am interested in a segmented run and I can create coin routes fairly easily (I hope), right now I'm just more interested in IL's for two reasons:
1) I like the idea of rapid start-to-finish action more than going out of the way for coins and
2) This will ultimately increase my consistency and level of comfort with each level, making an eventual seg'd or, patience willing, SS run plausible.

Oh and update, just got 1:47 on 0.1, Aboard the Sweet Stuff.

Oh and
3) IL's will more than likely help determine said coin route.

I enjoyed this game as well. Have had it in mind for speedrunning but haven't really put any effort to it.

I did these times a few minutes ago to see how it would go, not too bad at least. Time left at the escape.
0-1 Aboard the Sweet Stuff - 04:45.73
1-1 Stonecarving City - 02:09.28
1-2 Whoopsy Desert - 01:57.90 I know I can improve this one.

I'm looking forward to a run at least. I'll see if I can help you out with something, such as a money route. You can get at least 4750 in the first stage without losing any time. Getting the three diamonds is possible, but it's quite hard to get the timing right. But I haven't checked other levels, so I guess I could help you with that.

For number 1, this is the reason why I'm not doing a 100% run in Wario Land for Gameboy either, and just sticking with the any% category. Tongue

For number 3, you're right, it can help, somewhat, as long as most of what you're getting, or will (for the segmented run) is visible.

1-Up!
Okay, so I've discussed the fact that I'm making a segmented run of this game on IRC, but I figured it would be good to post here too.  I've finished 3 of the 7 segments (Prologue, Areas 1 & 2) and things are looking good so far.

Basically my goal is to put my money where my mouth is and make a run which improves upon the rejected run as well as I can (in case it wasn't obvious, I was the verifier who rejected the run).

At first I figured I'd just use the coin route in the rejected run but I later realized that it was very inefficient, so I started from scratch and made my own.  I don't feel like going into intimate detail about it right now, but here's my projected coin totals for each area (Keep in mind that 501,000 total coins need to be collected).

Prologue: 9,790
Area 1: 92,920
Area 2: 116,810
Area 3: 136,980
Area 4: 144,320

Total: 500,820

Yes, I know its 180 coins low, but don't worry, I kept all of my estimates a little bit low, and in the 3 segments I've finished, I've already made up for it.

I don't currently have the means to put my segments online, so the best I can do is provide my times.

I personally timed the rejected run in at ~1:45:13, my goal is to get under 1:35:00 by my timing.

Segment 1:
My time: 7:29 (0:17 improvement)

Segment 2:
My time: 15:06 (3:58 improvement, 4:15 total)

Segment 3:
My time: 16:41 (1:26 improvement, 5:41 total)

All these segments were done I believe in October and November '09.  I didn't do much speedrunning over Christmas and recently got back into this game.  I've been making recorded attempts at Segment 4 and I intend to beat the other run's Segment 4 by at least 2 minutes.
1-Up!
SEGMENT 4 FINISHED!

The most difficult segment of the run is now behind me, and my Chortlebot fight was almost perfect.

My time: 15:36 (2:36 improvement, 8:17 total)

My goal of sub- 1:35:00 is looking promising, only about two more minutes need to be saved.

The next segment won't be too hard.  I've played plenty of Ropey Jungle. The next water level is all about memorization.  Airytale Castle wont be that hard.  I've played a lot of Soggybog River while creating the coin route.  And finally, Bloomsday isn't that threatening of a boss I don't think.

It's all downhill from here I think.

really glad to see there's still interest in this game. nice job on chortlebot - i would think he'd be the worst of the bosses from a speed running perspective. definitely looking forward to the finished run.

can expect some il runs from me this summer. ;)

Good to know you're still working on this game. From what I can tell, this one will be much better. Can't wait to see the finished product. Good luck!
1-Up!
Segment 5 Complete!

As expected, it was relatively easy.  My complete and total incompetence with the subwarine wasn't displayed too much, as I was able to take out the level 2 boss in a respectable time.

My Time: 17:51 (3:24 improvement, 11:41 total)

Most importantly, I've surpassed my goal of sub 1:35:xx, as the total time needed to save was ~10:00.

I've been practicing Area 5 for the last hour or so and it will certainly be a push-over.

The first level is very straightforward and not too difficult.

The second level is underwater, but the boss is easier than the last.

The third level is the ice theme, and will be the hardest of the bunch (not saying much).

The fourth level is Bad Manor, and it's basically a joke.

Finally, I have a fast strategy for Large Fry which makes him a piece of cake. [/foodpun]

With good luck, I may finish the run tonight, but I'm certainly not holding my breath.  I know it's a bad idea to set a deadline, I'm just saying.
1-Up!
Well, I stayed up last night and finished out the run.

I finally got an Area 5 I was happy with with an excellent Large Fry fight.

Also, my Shake King fight was beautiful.  I was actually able to save time over the previous run.

Segment 6:
My Time: 15:01 (1:33 saved, 13:14 total)

Segment 7:
My Time: 3:41 (0:34 saved, 13:48 total)

Final Time: 1:31:25

All in all I'm very pleased with this run.  I did what I set out to do, and that was to show that this game could be speedrun much better than the previous run was.  I saved 13:48 with only better planning and execution.

I believe my coin route is good, but especially when I got to the later segments I felt that maybe I should have dropped more early bags and put in more late bags.  I feel that this game could possibly get sub 1:30:xx with a new and improved coin route and perfect execution.  Perhaps I'll look into that someday, but right now I'm very pleased with my run.  I'm going to write up my comments and perhaps do some audio commentary today and try to contact Mike sometime soonish.

Those of you looking to verify should look out for this game to pop up in verification.

PS - Don't post here saying you want to verify
PPS - When you do verify, be quick about it  Wink

I'm kinda itching to SS this game now that I'm done with this run, so I guess we'll see what happens there...
Fucking Weeaboo
Good to see that my attempt FINALLY motivated somebody into getting the game done.  I'm also surprised that you were able to save time on the Shake King fight.  I thought I nailed that thing perfectly, given that I hit him at every opportunity.  Based upon what I remember from it, you probably threw him to the right on the 2nd round.  I threw him to the upper left to give a chance for the orbs to clear out before the triple dash charge, since you have to hit him every time he dashes to completely stun him, and with the orbs around it was very easy to get hit.

Actually I saved 34 seconds on the fight by killing him a cycle early.  Ground Pounding him when he passes under you deals minimal damage which adds up and actually reduces the number of throws needed by 1.

can expect some il runs from me this summer. ;)

well, i'm ready to start these now but i'd like some input -- would you be most interested in ils done on a "fresh" file, that is, no chests opened, no upgrades, etc? or would it be better to just use my 100% file? the 100% might be faster for some levels since i wouldn't have to jump over treasure chests (i can't remember if there are any in the way or not).

I say use the 100%.  I'd like to help out with these (been fiddling with my stream setup recently, thought it would be fun to stream attempts... no luck thus far).

It's easier for more people to participate if we don't need a fresh file.  Not too many chests actually in the way anyway though, only level that comes immediately to mind is run down pyramid, at the start of the run back.

cool, yeah that's what i'll likely end up doing. it would be great to have more people helping with routes and providing some competition. i'll definitely be using your run as a reference for the main levels (great job on that btw); i think i saw a few places where more time can be saved.

has anyone done anything with the secret levels yet? i guess the first thing to do is some run-throughs of those since they're not in your run. i'll post the best routes i can find on youtube and go from there.

The only one I've done any considerable work on (and even not that much) is the first one.

The real difficulty comes in the spacing of the platforms and the number of enemies, IIRC.  Also, the run back has a ton of cannon shots :/

I'm working on SS in an on again off again fashion, but hopefully I can pound out some attempts soonish.  I think those would be fun to stream.

did a test run of the first secret level (disturbing tomb) today and managed 0:02:30 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj7foJME4Sg

you're right that's it's an annoying level -- lots of long/precise jumps. worst room is the one before the checkpoint but i managed to do it pretty well. only thing is i got caught on the ledge after the last jump; you can land directly in the pink sludge to save some time. anyone have a better route for this room?

other fuckups were dash jumping in some spots where a normal jump would have been faster,  taking an extra jump to ground pound the rocks below the checkpoint, bumping into the mummy at the start of the escape, and the dash jumps during the escape (my best from today was 3:18:01 left on the timer; here i got 3:17:58).

one part i think can be done faster is when i dodge the bird and bounce off it. faster would be to jump over it, land on the edge of the same platform, then dash jump up to the final ledge. this was way harder in practice then just bouncing off and it only saves a few tenths of a second, so i left it out.
a few times i was able to dash jump over the bird while it was diving and land on the ledge (which is faster than any other method) but i couldn't get that consistently at all.

definitely going to get this one perfect eventually but i'm moving on for now.

Very well done!  Clearly you know what you're doing.  Only spotted 2 potential improvements

-dash jump into the first EQ punch room (after the balloon enemies) to get off the quick EQ punch so you don't have to wait on the falling block

and possibly (as in i havent timed this)

-slide into the cage room instead of hitting the far wall (use the arrow in the previous room as your mark to hit 'down'.)

Anyway, not improvable by more than a second as far as I'm concerned.  For the sake of being consistent, where do you start timing?

ahh didn't think about that (even though i've seen it in your run, lol). definitely the best way to do it rather than stopping mid-dash like i did.

this is pretty interesting. i'll take a look today but it seems like it may only be slightly faster due to the speed of the slide. if my timing is correct, i got a 0:01:49.142, so i'd only need to save that .142 seconds to improve it. seems doable so i'll definitely be coming back to this at some point.
edit: yeah, sliding is definitely faster. i've only been able to land on top of the cage, but it's still way faster than hitting the wall.

i start on the first frame that wario moves and end on the frame where the light swells in the starting capsule, which is the last frame the timer counts afaict.

can anyone confirm that jumping over those two sets of bandineros at the end is faster than running through them? seems like there's a slight bit of slowdown in speed when you hit them. i accidentally hit one in this run but i think it's faster to jump both.

edit: did a new run that should be much faster. i still ran into one of the damn bandineros during the escape though. ;(

very happy with this. can save just a hair by holding right after bouncing off the yellow bandinero and jump dashing immediately upon landing.
