2:03:32 - Breakdown - ALL

This still wasn't a very good run, but I feel much less scrubby now.  If I have another 2 hour or so chunk of time to kill in the next couple days I may try to improve this further.

EDIT:

1:42:41 - Breakdown - ALL

Fun Fact:  This run happened after a night at the bar.

Is memorizing the solutions to every level the true key to speed here, or are there a bunch of really quick solutions for a lot of them? I guess I could have saved minutes from several of the later levels at the very least. Also holy crap my hands are frozen. >_>
Haters gonna hate
Knowing and being able to rattle off the solutions is the most important thing.  Obviously doing things in the least amount of moves helps, but taking a couple extra steps and doing it right definitely beats screwing up trying to do it quickly and sucking up a retry.  The 3:53 I put up first was only my second time through the game, and just by being more familiar with the individual levels on the next couple attempts I chopped my time by about an hour each try.

In other news, I finally got around to uploading my Pop'n replay, check it out in my youtube channel.

Third try. I had to redo a couple levels and get reacquainted to others, and also had some computer lag, so at least I can see the points I need to improve on. Also, you guys are skipping the cutscenes, right?

Also for timing, are you timing from the moment you enter the first level or the moment you talk to granny?
Never give up!
Let me be honest, thanks to one hectic week, week 4 is probably the only week where I won't even put up a time.

It's not even preparing for week 5 (I think we've got our game decided, but I'll run it a couple more hours to make sure) that's getting to me - I'm actually preparing for the week 6-7 vote.  (I insist on playtesting the games a bit in this case, and I actually had a hard call to make for the NES game.)

I'm dumb and even after I killed the final boss I died and had to retry multiple times. >_< But yay I'm cool 8^)
Never give up!
Submissions for Fire 'n Ice are formally CLOSED at this time.

Week 5 seems to be a much more promising week, I think.

Jagger: Since your last time was posted on a transition day, I'm going to double-check - that's still for Fire 'n Ice, correct?  (I assumed it was based on the 'had to retry multiple times' statement.)
Jumping Turtle
Yeah, that's for Fire 'n Ice.

13:42 - mikwuyma - 5th boss (didn't beat him, on him) - Mess. O

Just putting in something shitty for now. I was really sucking in my attempts tonight. I know I can do wayyyyy better.

10:50 - Breakdown - Stage 5 - Mess. O

That's at the start of the stage (gaining control).  I died a couple minutes later (before the boss), started blocking punches with my face, and it didn't prove to be a winning strategy.

That's really not very fast at all, but I'm not a big beat em up player and I'm finding myself having to focus more on general survival than speed.  I think I'll get further than this, but not sure how much I'll pick up the pace along the way.

EDIT:  Something that would be good to know, are you going to track bosses or other checkpoints within the levels when doing completion ranking, or just level by level.

Never give up!
I was intending to do just level by level, but with Mike referencing a specific boss I'm not so sure now.

If he reports his next one as just the level rather than being specific with the boss (and maybe saves any notes on bosses for his 'followup'), I'll definitely do 'level by level'.

Edit:

7:17 - AquaTiger - Stage 3 - Jack T.

Got my best Stage 1 ever (yes, even better than the time I got an M-16 instead of a handgun in one of the early statues) and FINALLY beat the Stage 2 boss on one credit (but not one life), which required me bringing the Uzi from the start of the stage all the way to the boss fight.  (For those baffled, remember, you can hit the attack and jump buttons at the same time to drop a weapon you're carrying without using it.  At least, if you have health left.)  I swear, why I have so much trouble on that boss (this is actually the first time I've gotten past him on one credit) is beyond me.  Maybe because of his cheapshot minions?

Stage 3 is child's play and anyone who dies on that stage fails majorly, so I'm not going to cover that.  Stage 4, well, I got cheapshotted AGAIN and didn't even make it halfway through the second area of the stage.

Mike, my attempts to extrapolate a proper time from what you listed are not going well.  (Yes, I attempted to extrapolate a 'proper' time.)  I really hate to do this, but I'm going to have to leave your time off the chart for the moment until I either (a) have an idea how long it takes you to get through the main part of stage 5, or (b) get a time from you that references the last stage completed the way previous weeks have, instead of a point mid-stage.  I hope you understand.  (If it comes to it and the week ends without another time from Mike, I'll put it on there as is, which might infuriate a few people.)

Breakdown, I listed yours at stage 4 because, again, last stage completed.  I understand it may be a few seconds off because of this.

That's fine, I think my time was around 10:10 when I started the stage, but I'll be making more attempts tonight and tomorrow (haven't made any in a couple of days).

EDIT: 19:36 - mikwuyma - Stage 7 - Mess. O

This time was taken at the beginning of stage 7. I died around 26:27 (and anyone who knows the stage should know why I died).

The run was going well until stage 6, where I died twice, once during the stage (shouldn't happen), and another time during the Tyrog fight (I almost died twice :().

Aquatiger: the trick to the second boss is to constantly combo throw him (hold up or down while comboing him), it kills him really fast.
35:41 - Normand - ALL

Mediocre run, in terms of speed, but I'm still happy to get a 1cc before moving on to E.V.O. I'm actually really surprised I managed to finish this run since I lost two lives in level 7 and another one in level 8, which means I had to fight the final boss with a single life remaining
Never give up!
Alright, I can rest easy knowing someone has this beat.

But one question remains.  Who did you use for that playthrough, Normand?  That's the only thing missing from your entry.

And I just love how confident you are about what next week's game is gonna be.  There's still a good 10-11 hours before its competition starts.  Never discount the possibility of a bunch of angry spiteful gamers and their single-finger salute to the normal ones.

(Note: I am not actually counting on those angry spiteful gamers actually showing up.  I'm just trying to make a point.)
My feelings on The Demon Rush
My guess is Normand used Mess. O, though he could have also used Mustapha (he's the best character).

Normand: Were you ahead of my time around stage 7? I have a feeling I'm playing kind of stupidly risky at parts. :-/

AquaTiger: He's confident it's going to be next week's game because it's by far the best choice in the lineup. Tongue

Also, fuck those first boss palette swaps.
I used Mess. O. Now that I'm done with this game, I finally got around to watching a playthrough on Youtube and Mustapha does seem to be a better choice. Oh well

I can't say for sure, but I think you were faster than me in the first six levels. I start playing safely and rather slowly at the beginning of level 5, and I wouldn't be surprised if sub-30 was possible
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Ok, this is the first time I've checked this thread all week and I have to say shit, I had no idea this is the week I would get first (unless Mike or someone last-minutes me doh). I thought I had a better chance any of the last 3 weeks. I thought I should have done better those weeks (although in my defense I only went through Fire and Ice once that week), this makes up for it a little I guess.

33:16 - Enhasa - ALL - Mustapha

Why is nobody else using Mustapha? He rules. I think Normand could beat my time just by switching, lol.
Jumping Turtle
Oh geez I've been absent from here for too long. Okay, I have like...10 hours to get a time posted? >_<

I won't, I hardly even played yesterday and now I'm at work.

Mustapha does rule (I've said he's the best before), but I still think Mess is better for a speedrun because he does more damage. Maybe I'm missing something about Mustapha? Either way, this is one of the few games where every character is good, shrug.

I think I'll still aim for an all clear later even though I won't be on time.
Jumping Turtle
This just in: I epic-failed and didn't get around to sending a time in. >_< Go me.
YAY EVO Smiley

Oh btw, for those who wanted to record it (with record function on emulator).
I also tried it a bit and for some reason it bugged out for some weird reason. (he didn't execute the commands at the right times and instead of going to the next stage he joined the first one again and from there on he just ran into walls because off course he should have been in the 2nd stage)
it happened on both on Snes9x and Zsnes. Just thought I'd mention it Smiley

Also, is it allowed to die?
When you die you'll lose half your evo points and Gaia brings you back to life. You may die an unlimited amount of times.
Also, are you allowed to use the save function in the game? You can save at any time when on the world map and when you load the game you'll always start off with full health no matter what you health status was at the time of saving.

I've looked at it a bit and this game can surely be beaten faster then Rock 'n Roll Racing Smiley
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
This game is like trying to play Dimahoo for a weekly but it was still easily the best choice. Good luck guys, I'll be happy if I can even 1cc it (without really grinding of course).
Well I'll guess I'll be the first to post a time.

1:33:21 - ZaibirQuild - Entrance to Eden (That's chapter 5 the final stage)

I failed at that stupid end boss. I did die several times, that costed me a lot of time. So if that is not suppose to be allowed then I guess you can cancel my time :(.

I do think I've got a very good (if not the best :P) strategy for the game as how to play.
Soo... I'll just need the execution to be perfect as well.
Wandering if any of you guys have any luck/process with finding a good strat. Is anyone even trying to play this game?
It's so silent here.  Roll Eyes
Never give up!
Because of how penalizing deaths are in this game, and in the name of convincing more people to play this time, I've decided to be lenient in that respect and allow times with deaths, knowing that there's a good chance the better scores won't have deaths.

Also, check the earlier posts in the thread.  We have an odd situation for bonus games this time around.
I've noticed some people are having a hard time avoiding deaths in E.V.O.  Forgive me if this was already mentioned, but there's a glitch you could say in the game that could be useful.  If you open the evolution menu right when you lose all your HP you can still evolve something.  If you increase or decrease body size, you'll recover all your HP and not die.  I'm sure everyone already knew this of course.  I used to farm a lot of evo points so I could heal repeadtedly during tough boss battles.  I wouldn't have beaten the final boss without it.  Test it out and I'm sure it could be useful.
