21:31 - All - Metal Dream

A pretty good run. Thanks to all the training from the booth challenges, I know the last level by heart and of course, the previous ones aren't as tough as the last one. Defensive at some points and died on the last boss but for me, doing better than this run will be tough

Also, for the last boss, I found that the right wall is a safe spot. If you stay back at the right wall, he can't hit you but if you're aiming for speed, you might want to be a little more adventurous. Still, if you're in trouble you know you can hide there.

I don't know if it makes a difference or not but for the medusa heads and the last tower, I spam my missiles and my bullets...no idea if the bullets does any damage

This can still come down a bunch.  Sub 10 is definitely possible by a good margin.

I've been playing so safely that such a time doesn't really surprise me. I take it you skip almost all the troops and only get a couple 1-ups?

As for the second boss, I agree that spamming machine gun too is good, but I don't think they damage the heads. I'm not positive though. They definitely destroy the missiles, so that's easily a plus. I think it should only take a couple rounds to take them out.

Ok I managed a 20:xx time today and now a better 19:14. I don't think I'm ever going to get close to breakdowns time.

The run was good until I died in stage 3, then it went to shit. Sad
Hey now, that's not like Mike Uyama.

Do it again. D=<

3 deaths, 1 towards the end of level 6 and 2 against the last boss.  Some little mistakes in the levels and almost all of my boss fights could've been better (nailed the fourth one though), but pretty good on the whole.  Gonna keep trying and see if I can get a deathless run, and that would definitely clock in at sub 9.

Deplorable stage 5 and 6 boss fights, I'm sure I can improve this before next week

Biggest thing about this game is lag reduction. I don't feel like exploring that though so since I'm sub10 I think I'm done. How are people getting these huge times anyway? Are they killing all the enemies? This is a notoriously easy game, you can just blaze through it and move forward almost nonstop. If someone thinks this game is hard, they should go play Ikari Warriors and then report back. Grin

PS I miss vgmr Sad Sad Sad
And here I was thinking I did a good run...

I'm impressed peeps got sub 10 minutes :O
Jumping Turtle
...Eh, yeah, Enhasa, I farmed for extra lives, picking up all the troops and playing it really safe. I took the time to lob grenades over blockades to take out tanks from a safe distance, too. That's basically the first no-continue run I had.
A winner is you!
Holy crap, you guys are tearing this game apart! And I thought that I did good runs  Cry

13:01 - All - Metal Dream

I thought that my previous one was gonna be hard for me to beat but after seeing sub 10 mins runs, my technique had to be wrong so I just went for broke. Still, whoever wins this category or comes close to must record a movie for SDA...please!  Smiley

Ok I'm so bad at this game I've tried but I can't beat this time and can't be assed with it anymore. 16:03

I don't know if I can still submit a time (week 4 voting grumble grumble)

9:40 - mikwuyma - final boss

I really botched the fifth boss badly.

9:46 - mikwuyma - ALL

Finally. If I practiced more I probably could have had a one-life clear, but this time is good for roughly 5-6 hours of practice and play.
Never give up!
Yeah Mike, I can still take the time.  In fact, I can take times for Jackal until I explicitly close off week 3 submissions around midday today.

I don't know how many more I'm going to GET, but...

Well, at least one more.

8:52 - Breakdown - ALL

Far from perfect.  Some dumb lag control mistakes in the levels, improvable boss fights (though none of them went terribly), and one really defensive piece of play in level 6, but hey, I didn't die. Smiley

Edit:  Page breaked.

I probably won't make any attempts for Fire 'n Ice (while the game itself is great, it looks painful and boring to speedrun), but I'll start working on the next week's games right now to hopefully get a run I'm satisfied with for once

Alright, submissions for Jackal are CLOSED at this time.

Let me factor in these last two and I should have some standings soon.

EDIT: Standings updated.  If you catch a score issue tell me.
Jumping Turtle
Huh, so I guess I'm the only one that outright hated Jackal.

Also I gave it my best shot. I tried dozens of times. That 27 is the ONLY successful run I got.

And Break, I commented on your video. Good stuff.

GJ Breakdown, what a champ.

Jagger: I bet you're a lot better at platformers than shooters and that is the main reason. Seriously, try Ikari Warriors and you will be guaranteed to hate Jackal just a little bit less.

I hope I'm not the only person who plays Fire n Ice. It's a great game. (much better than Solomon's Key imho although SK is a million times more famous... Fire n Ice is SK2)

Thanks guys, glad you liked it.  I know I can do better than that, though if I do it'll be on console with some sort of recording device going (no promises on that though).

Fire N Ice is pretty fun.  I'm usually not all that into puzzle games, but this one has that good combination of a simple concept, good difficulty curve, and engaging gameplay.  I don't think I'll be optimizing this as much as Jackal (100 stages  Shocked ), but I'll try to put up a semi-respectable time this week.

Couple questions:

I'm assuming we don't have to play the extra stages (read an FAQ that says you get codes after beating the first 100 for a bunch of new levels).

Since the last two weeks had the "no continues" rule, how is this one going to be handled in this regard.  Do we stop timing the first time we reach for the "try again" option?  Can we screw up as much as we want?  Some sort of arbitrary limit on retries?

Here's my current view on this:

I'm not going to restrict the actual retry count, but do factor any retries in a given playthrough into your time.  Stop timing when you stop playing because you can't figure out a puzzle (if you go to look it up as you're playing, time that too!) or beat the main set of 100.  (I see no reason to force people to play the 'extra' levels when they're accessed by password.)

This is more a timed playthrough than a speedrun, lots of retries and pauses for thought.  It really wouldn't surprise me if an hour could get taken off of this, but it's an ALL and I don't know if I'm going to try to improve it any further.  Fixed-stage puzzle games like this get a lot less fun after the first time through.

Don't tell me this isn't the greatest box art.

1:43:33 - Enhasa - ALL

I did that last night. This game is too long for a tourney I think. This time is pretty bad for a run, maybe I will go through again and make it a lot faster. I probably won't if I don't get challenged though. This is the kind of game you only play through once, at least until you've forgotten the solutions. There is a level editor though, which is really cool for an NES game. I googled and found this site, haven't checked out any of the levels though.

I was also playing some Solomon's Key, and you know, I think that game's only "problem" is not having infinite continues. It would be extremely annoying to 1cc, but it's actually a great game with save states at the start of each level. Yeah, call me a pansy, I deserve it. Anyway, this game is much more of a pure puzzler. I appreciate the simplicity, but I would highly respect anyone who liked Solomon's Key better while playing on one credit.
Jumping Turtle
Okay, I got all the fun I think I can out of this game. I finally "get" to speedrun it. Also holy crap those bonus levels are hard. The last couple solutions are really neat, though. 15-8 took like an hour of straight thought. I could see the trick, just not the method to set it up. >_<

I guess you're not gonna accept a time of XX:XX:XX for the entire game, huh? I'm probably gonna spend friday on it.
