Quote from FearfulFerret:
Which black screen frames are used for loading times? For the beginning frame of the loading screen, is it the first frame of black screen or the last frame of black screen? Same question for the last frame of loading.

Start of black screen to start of black screen. My times are a little rough, but at worst I'm off by 1-2 seconds on the final time.
I've got 6:17 in loading times for my current PB.
Alright well, I'm going to time my loads on the newer PB of mine to see the difference between 1 run and another. Seeing as our loading time difference is almost 20 seconds it is probably worth cutting out loads from WRs and such. Obviously we need some more data, but it's looking like load times are not padded enough to make different setups have similar load times. What would be really good would be to have someone try the game on SSD.
I'll reinstall on my SSD and time my next PB.

I don't have an SSD, but just to contribute some more data, I measured out my loading time on 3 of my own most recent runs. It... took a while Sad

You can see that, sadly, Run2 was about 30 seconds faster in total loading time which is a pretty big difference. So I'm not even getting consistent loading between my own runs. I wasn't sure if maybe my computer was just running better or something on that day, so I also tried just playing the same level over and over (I used level 2-1) in the same session without taking any breaks, and recorded the loading times:
(Entering the level - Leaving the level)
4.2-6.3
4.1-6.6
4.5-3.3
4.1-6.0
4.6-5.8
4.3-3.4
4.3-6.3
4.3-3.6
4.4-4.0
4.1-3.7
4.4-5.4
4.6-5.1

Loading into the level is fairly consistent, 4.1-4.6 seconds, the differences there could be explained by human error with the timer. But when loading the gallery menu coming out from the level, the loading time is anywhere from 3.3-6.6 seconds, which is a big difference and it's seemingly random. I noticed a similar pattern when comparing the three full runs together as well, the big differences in loading time generally come in when leaving the levels and going to the menu.

Anyway, it could just be something with my particular computer/hard drive, or it could be something that only happens on certain levels, but there ya go.
I've also noticed the inconsistencies between different runs on the same setup. However that's just more of an argument against real time. It sucks, but we might just have to time every single run's loading times. Speaking of, new WR yesterday: 1:37:01, 1:30:10 without loads.

Got a time of 1:35:44, with 6:24 of loading times. After installing on my SSD, loading times stayed almost exactly the same; they would have been 6:14 (only a 3 second difference) if I hadn't accidentally entered 4-3 (I'm assuming it's ok to take out those loading times). Time without loads is 1:29:20.

That's really interesting that your load times were almost identical. It could just be super inconsistent. Regardless, really nice run. You are faster by exactly the amount of time I lost on Lucha miniboss ;_;

Hopefully some other consoles get a bit more involved since aside from load times the versions are near identical (excluding Wii-U and Vita of course).
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
So I finally got around this morning to timing PS3 load times, and it looks like including the opening 3 second loss, Load times are about 11:04. This doesn't include any time loss to scratching tickets, and since you can scratch tickets more optimally, it's sort of hard to judge that. To note, that would mean my PB is about 1:32:05 without load times, and probably a high-ish 1:31 when accounting for ticket scratching.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
So I timed my run from last night and I got 11:04 again. It looks like Console versions might have consistent load times actually, which makes this a lot easier. I MIGHT time one more run just to make sure, but my splits feel pretty consistent as well. That means this time is a 1:29:54, 34 seconds behind Ferret. Still a solid time I'd say, but I'll try for better runs once my new compy comes in.

So I've been playing this quite a bit (mostly off stream since my computer isn't quite up to snuff) and I find a nifty glitch with the fist power-up.  If you do an attack on the right frame as the wizard is summoning the power-up it spawns next to you for a frame and allows you to launch a red fist early.  I found this in Lucha Libre Get Away invaded and in that particular level this works both on the 0.40 and 0.41 frames.  Obviously this is an IL strat but I thought it was pretty nifty and figured I'd share.
Looks like someone beat my WR - http://www.twitch.tv/downiebrownie111/c/3156491

Finally I get an excuse to play again.
That may be useful :

hasn't spike been doing that since forever ago? I know I've seen someone doing it at least.
Yeah, Spike created the strat, Goos claimed it was impossible on pc, I made that coz I was bored.
Timed a full run, and my load times are GIGANTICS compared to Goos' and Brownie's. And I'm on 2SSD's on RAID0... My explanation : I'm running in 1080p, goos is in 720 (?) and Brownie is in 800x600 ?

Got a new WR with 1:27:20. Everything through world 5 was great, everything after was a total train wreck. I think I had 8 deaths.

http://www.twitch.tv/fearfulferret/c/3461885
Small improvement to 1:27:10. Nine unintentional deaths. I used in-game time strats at the beginning of the first stage to save a bit of time.

Can't stop me. Can't bring me down.
So I've been away for a while on this and I see the route has changed a ton.  I guess I'm going to have to go back and watch some runs and see what is what these days.  I have some time now since I am done with DigiPen and still looking for a job in the game industry.  That free time might as well be used for some speedrunning.
Can't stop me. Can't bring me down.
Also apparently my copy of Rayman Legends on PC refuses to run and I have no idea why.  I decided to just reinstall and hope for the best.  :/
New WR, 1:26:10. Five unintentional deaths, shields and elevator were particularly bad. Most of the run was very solid. No longer a resident of chokesville.

Edit: made a small revision to route; 4/12/14

Hey, so I came up with a new in-game time route that I think is up to 20 seconds faster. In the original route it was thought that invasion levels take a lot longer to do because of the loading times. Now that loading times are no longer a factor, I found that it is actually faster to skip some of the queen/king teensies on some of the levels and do these additional invasion levels instead. The new route utilizes ALL of the invasion levels that become available (two in world3, and one in world4), which means the choking section is even longer than it was before, so its a bit risky. But they each have a value of about 18seconds/teensy in the new route including the time it takes to briefcase warp over to them and collect all of their teensies, and this is what makes them worth doing.

I also decided to do the first two levels of world 4 early, because this way you get a briefcase warp to world5 which makes up for it, and all the rest of the warps line up more cleanly (no more searching way back in the briefcase for Ursula). I don't think this particular aspect of the new route saves more than a second or two at most, if anything, though its hard to test because of all the unlock animations that get played throughout the menu at various times.

Here are my notes for my new route if anyone is interested:

I've done a few runs of my own with it, and today got a good run going with a new PB which you can see here:
http://www.twitch.tv/spire7/c/3643395
Also, if you take a look at the end of 2-4 I used a new damage boost found by djthed which might save a small amount of time [edit:I just got around to timing it and its actually slower, oops!], and on 4-2 I use a silly trick I discovered yesterday that gets you through the longer crawlspaces a little faster by extending the sliding distance.
Hi, I'm planning to start running this game. Are there any tips you guys can give me? I've seen a lot of player movements in the runs I've watched that I didn't see in game when I played it originally.

Also seen a lot of load time discussion. What's the best way to minimise this as I don't have an SSD.
Edit history:
FearfulFerret: 2014-03-04 12:10:25 pm
Don't worry about load times. When you finish a run, go into windows movie maker or another video editing program and time your load screens. Subtract the time spent in load screens from your total time, and that's the official time of your run. Other than getting an SSD, I think that lowering your resolution may decrease load times, but that's only for convenience; load times won't hurt your speedrun.

As for movement, there's a suite of moves in this game that are important to learn, and I don't think there's much of a tutorial. I'll do the best I can...

Ground moves:
walk (never do this)
sprint (don't do this unless you only need to go a short distance)
spin attack (standard move, usually chains into something else)
roll (hold down after either a jump or a spin attack)
roll attack (press attack during a roll)
jump (usually done out of a spin attack to maintain momentum)
high jump (jump out of a roll, gets extra height)

Air moves:
attack (loses a bit of speed, but stops you from falling for a bit the first time you do it)
ground pound (note that this brings you up a bit when you start it, which is how we hit pillows from below)

Also remember that you can buffer basically everything. For example, you can buffer an air attack after a spin by pressing XXA in a certain rhythm. This buffer air attack is actually the fastest way to move across a flat surface, since spin attacking is fast and the buffered attack minimizes time in the air. Practice movement a bunch and you'll get the hang of it.
I picked up this game again and playing as much as humanely possible. I'm still going for the old route since I want to get out of chokeville as fast as possible (yesterday's practice death count : 42) and I've offered it for ESA, where real time actually matters. As soon as I get a decent pb I'll post it on youtube, can't stream coz of crappy internet.
I'm really excited to see a sub 1:26 happen with the new route Cheesy
