we have lift off
See the video again, I wrote a comment explaining what happened. This video is another example of it happening. That one in p1c6 is the only place it is any real risk as I don't need to jump on any other ledges that can do that I don't think (apart from right at the end of the last level, but I will be very careful!).

Edit: Oh wow, glitch killed in the same place on p1c6, that is really getting old fast. That's after two attempts getting to p1c8 and both failing at the jump on the backdrops, for fucks sake, this run is just never going to end.

Edit2: I now have a new desktop, one that can actually handle recording and playing. I have been using my laptop and it is definitely harder and the laptop is not as fast. It's nice being able to use a proper keyboard but the main thing is I won't have to waste 15-20mins setup time when I want to attempt! I have been practising part 3 some more, I will carry on attempting tomorrow.

Edit3: p3c3, yawn I totally messed up. Everything up till part 3 was brilliant, despite the practise part 3 is causing me trouble but I am confident!

Edit4: p3c2, It's all going OK and then:.....what...th..e....hell..LA.G!..!..!.......*DIES*
*Goes to desktop* "Windows needs to restart to install updates"...

It goes without saying but I changed the settings for when it decides to install updates.
Frankly, even though the run was fairly quick I got shot to pieces so much throughout the run that I know it could have been significantly cleaner and a bit faster. The thing I'm most annoyed about is that I get to part 3 and the last two times now I die to absolutely stupid things rather than getting valuable practise.... Oh well. This just simply has to happen soon now, I am getting to part 3 like every other day, I just need one deathless part 3 and it will be done!

Edit5: p2c3, died at the boss fight. My mistake? Rolling to be on the safe side then when I am shooting at the boss he whips out his shotgun and kills me in like 0.2s. That you get punished so severely for even the slightest deviation from the plan exemplifies why this run is so hard.

I am just going to stop estimating when this run will be done by. I have been "any run now" away from completing this for probably 2 months. Bear in mind the last and only no death run I did was back at the start of December. I think it goes without saying that I have invested far too much time and implemented way too many good strats since then to submit that run. I will just keep plugging away but if I was you, waiting for this run to be done, my advice is to forget about it until I post that it is complete, it may be tomorrow, it may be another month (or perhaps I am doomed to attempt this until the day I die).

And...... I'm still not done!

While this does meet my target time of 1:01:xx there are two ugly super jumping sections; one on p1c8 which costs me 15s and one on p3c5 which costs 37s (!). My super jumping was slightly below par for the run and the main problem obviously was the p3c5 jump which I was having trouble with, I was not really aiming in the right place but it's such a small area you have to land on and I just missed it twice. It's hard to describe but some days my timing for super jumps is really good, other times not.

By the time I got to part 3 I was 15s behind a good target time (basically the p1c8 mistake) and that would be OK given the difficulty of this run but that p3c5 error is too big for me. A very basic calculation will tell you that 1:00:xx is achievable and that is around the time I should get (a very high 1:00:xx or a very low 1:01:xx). There are no new strats to implement, just rubbing out those mistakes. I just want a clean run with no major mistakes and I would definitely class 37s as a major error.

All that is left to say is yes, it took me 2.5months (more like 2 months active play) to get another no death run and beat my old 1:02:28; however, it shouldn't take anything like that long to get another no death run. I have had clean runs get to part 3 and then fail, so I guess maybe next time!

p.s I love how yesterday I edited my last post to say I am going to stop estimating when this will be done etc. and then the very next day I get a no death run!

Sweetness, keep up the good work. This run will definitely be awesome once it's finished Smiley
Is there any way you could Ustream your runs?  Romscout does it and I watch his runs all the time (at least when I can)

I'm gonna assume that trying to record with Fraps over and over again while at the same time doing Ustream would be too much for his system to take (along with probably being annoying for viewers to see one spot repeated constantly).

My new computer is actually good so I probably could do this but I'd rather get this done with just FRAPS in the background for now. I am very used to the current setup and many of my crazy 'running through rooms while 5 people are shooting at me but I don't get hit' strategies rely on a stable fps and maybe rely on the fps being 30, I haven't tested it. However, when the FPS marathon comes around I will maybe do a few practise runs (I'll definitely do one to work out how long this will be without any manipulation of getting the first super jump and with a few deaths most likely) and will stream the run for the marathon so you can at least see some live action in the not too distant future.

Update:

It's been half a month with no update so for those who are following this: I am still attempting this (it's been nearly 6 months since I started, I'm not giving up now!) but part 1 is just such a bitch and requires luck to get past. The other day I got to p1c9 and got insta shotgunned upon performing the super jump, literally nothing I could do. I am still doing SSs of part 3 to make sure I nail this damn run when I get that far.

I am now aiming for 1:01 pretty much. It may well seem stupid to some of you that I am not aiming for sub 1 hour when I am less than a minute off it but well.... you try finding those extra 60+ seconds! Trust me this run is risky enough and it has evolved massively over 4-5months of attempting (1 month planning) into what I deem the best route; for a SS sub 1-hour is asking a bit much. It's annoying enough that my 1:01:47 (which passed my goal of 1:01:xx) isn't good enough for me. Also sub 1 hour is as arbitrary as any other time, all that matters is the quality of the run.

I have to say I am incredibly keen to get this run out there and for people to see some really amazing strats but I need to get a run without the major errors. I am struggling now as much as I was 2 months ago so I can only hope it is soon as this run has been a loooong time coming!

Update 2: Getting really sick of this, got to p2c4 and got double beretta headshotted... Due to some earlier bad luck I wasn't really fast enough anyway. FFS this is never going to end.

Update 3: p2c1, missed a deagle ammo pickup which I NEEDED and I paid the price. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

It's done!!!!

I was aiming for about 1:01 (over ambitiously) so this is an excellent time, I had some trouble with the super jump in part 1 but if I tried getting that spot on I would actually never finish this run. Part 2 and 3 went very well and of course it was deathless!

I am going to take a serious break from this game and this may be my last full game Speedrun, though I will consider improving the NYM run. I mainly intend to do some IL's or segments of runs in the future and almost certainly no more SS runs!

Youtube videos incoming.

Edit: I'v watched the run and it looks very clean. Biggest mistake costs about 4 seconds. Getting sub 1:01 would be incredibly hard, I get some good luck in places and despite some slightly off par super jumping in part 1, I average 2 attempts per super jump (miss first attempt, get it on the 2nd). That is a goal I set myself ages ago never thinking I would manage it and it is just amazing that I have.
destroy them with lazers
I said it in irc but I'll say it again. Well done. Looking forward to seeing this.
I am afraid no ones riding nothing!!!
Well done. Looking forward to it's release.
This sounds awesome. You put so much time in the run that I don't know how you didn't give up. I am looking forward to watching it with commentary.

I have uploaded it all to youtube -> Playlist

Enjoy!

Oh happy day indeed Smiley

Definitely nice, and after seeing the bloopers I can definitely feel your pain. Even more amazing how many close calls you had during the run.
You are insane at this game man. I'll have to watch your run on my PS3 because my current PC is like 10+ years old.
Your single-segment of max payne is more fast than your max payne new-york minute run. How is it that??

Well the single-segment run is played for best real time whereas the NYM run was played for best in-game time. Running is faster than rolling in real time and I use less slow-mo etc. It is interesting that my old run was about 3 minutes slower than the old NYM run and now my new run is a few minutes faster than the new NYM run, just shows how much improved it is Smiley . Thanks for the feedback as well guys.

I am planning on doing a streamed run of this to determine a realistic time for the marathon. I will just play through no matter what so there will be deaths but it will be interesting to see how long it takes. I'll post about that, need to work out how best to capture and encode first.
Dragon Power Supreme
Absolutely awesome and congrats on finally finishing the run. I would definitely watch a stream of the game if you would make one.

Ad infinitum
I've never been a fan of NYM runs due to the time-bonuses, so this DoA run made my day! The run looks pretty easy, which probably is due to your skill as the bloopers-video demonstrates how easy and random deaths can be in Max Payne. So this no-death SS run is something quite extraordinary.

The audio-commentary was very nice as well, it's always nice to have the runner describing the routes, the tricks, the difficulties... and with a nice Brittish accept non the less Tongue

Great work Mr Martin, it's a much appreciated run!

And I agree: "If you haven't played this game, then what the hell are you doing?"
Dragon Power Supreme
I have a backlog of over 12 hrs of speedruns to watch due to me being busy, but I went ahead and put this run in the front of that queue and I am not regretting this for a single moment. This is probably one of the best runs on SDA released this year (if not the best). You made the game look ridiculously easy (although the bloopers show otherwise, particularly the death at 3:11-3:12) and I've fully enjoyed the run (especially the part 2 water shortcut, that probably had me the most surprised). The audio commentary had been excellent all around, very informative and really was a good insight towards the making of this run as well as realizing the amount of tests that went into it.

Thanks very much for an excellent run!

For the rest of you: go watch it, there's absolutely no way you'll be disappointed.
Very impressive and entertaining run. Wonderfully executed! This run has to be one of the most impressive runs I have seen in a long time. The bloopers reel really highlights how insanely easy it is to die at any time on Dead on arrival difficulty. Well done, you should be really proud.
And audio commentary is always nice.
Loved it. One of the best runs on SDA, and a lot of fun to watch. I used to play Max Payne in college, so it's fun to watch someone who has truly mastered the game.
Beautifully done. Masterpiece!
A Crab
Watched this with commentary. Very cool. I imagine it would take a lot of perseverance to get through a game like that where instant death is around every corner.
