Waiting hurts my soul...
SDA has hosted a panel at Magfest for the past few years, and during that panel has showcased a video of runs available on the site. The video is usually in the 30 minute range. Short clips from games are used, ranging from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Last year I believe it was decided we should start selecting games from the past year. I've included an alphabetized list of runs posted in the past year. Take a look and make suggestions for what should go into this year's video. Things to keep in mind when selecting a clip:

- Include a time range for the clip, and give a short explanation on why it should be included (see the video below on how this will be used with the clip)
- We want to show a range of genres and games as an example of diversity in content.
- Clips should be impressive on their own without much context. Select either an easily understood feat or a well known title.
- There's usually a finale video that will show a complete run, less than 5 minutes for the entire video would be best. (past selections are SMB in 5:00 and Diablo in 3:12)

Here's last year's video as an example: http://www.archive.org/details/MAGFest-SDA_Speed_Run_Showcase_2010

There's not much time, so please make suggestions soon. Mike, nate, Breakdown, Flip, feel free to take over this thread/post, as I'm not sure how up-to-date I'll be able to keep it in the coming week (I'll do my best), and I'm not going to be making the final decision on these, so eventually one of you should step in to start cutting the list.

for my Metroid Prime 3 run I'd suggest one of these for being really quick boss fights since those imo are the most impressive part of the run... not sure what length you're looking for clips to be but: [edit: oh lol missed the part in the first post where you said "ranging from 30 seconds to 2 minutes"... never mind]

-Segment 10 2:17-2:37 (Korakk)
-Segment 15 4:10-4:45 (Ghor)
-Segment 32 5:59-7:45 (final boss fights, easily one of the highlights of the run)
Both my 2010 runs (Ghosts 'N Goblins, Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts) are updates to runs that have already been featured in SDA promos. I can still points out some nice places in either, if you want.
Fucking Weeaboo
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (XBLA Run) 18:48-19:24 - Include because romscout nailed the Richter skip in one try.  | The Richter skip allows you to ignore getting the Silver and Gold Rings, needed to get the Holy Glasses, which are normally needed to beat Richter the 'correct' way and thus not get the bad ending.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (Segment 28) 0:25 - 0:52 - Death fight | Include because Death is beaten in FIVE HITS WITHOUT TAKING DAMAGE.  Normally Death is That One Boss in a lot of the Castlevania games.

Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! - 1:33 - 2:27 - Sparring Match.  It may not seem impressive, but it's fast for that mode.  Plus the hilarity value.  We're not all serious people here, right?

Castlevania: Lament of Innocence (SS Leon) - 0:20:49 - 0:22:04 - Joachim fight | Normally a difficult fight beaten in 2 rounds (it's very tough to do it in 2 rounds).  Plus it's my run. Smiley

Cheesy Suggest a new part of the run. I'm not what's changed, but I don't see why not to have a level from it.

I think these are all fine suggestions.

Quote from Chrno:
Would I be able to but a clip forwards from a run in progress or must it be verified? I have a very good example of technique in one of my Rogue Spear level runs.

Also,

May I suggest 'Port Town 1' from the F-Zero X run? I really liked the grinding on the boost hill on that one, and I believe it would make people go WTF?!

In progress shouldn't be included, maybe next year. Feel free to suggest something that has been verified though, but not posted.

I'm not sure how Mike feels about including games that have been featured in the past, but I'd say go ahead and point out places that have been improved or are impressive that weren't featured in the past. I think we should focus on featuring new games, but there should probably be a few that show the improved runs as well.

Subtleties like getting a trick on the first try during a SS may not translate well in this setting. Just a word of warning.

Just curious ... where would you get the clip?  Should we (the runners) send you clips from our own runs if they are not posted?  My Toejam and Earl run has not been posted yet, but I thought that might be a noteworthy game to include because it's recognizable to most gamers.  If it's too complicated, though, I can just wait until next year and then selfishly self-promote.

nate is most likely going to be piecing this together again this year, so he'll have access to the clips to runs that aren't posted. I only know Myst was included last year (it was the whole run), but it was posted on the site in January. Feel free to suggest clips and describe what is happening so that nate is able to pinout the times if they're adjusted at all.
Intruding N313 and F014
PJ's ActRaiser (Professional Mode) has not been posted yet as well. I think a clip showing the major skip in the big room of Kasandora Act 2 should be shown.  A very tricky jump pulled off nicely.

Haters gonna hate
I believe the current Mario 3 run was in last year's too, and that hadn't been posted yet.  For runs that are due soon (and I think TJ & E falls in that category) if you have a timestamp to offer up it could conceivably make it in.  Also, both dex and I (and maybe Flip, though I'd call that iffy at this point) should have one more update each before MAG, so a number of runs that are soon to come now will be available when the panel gets done.

And looking over the suggested games, I see a big, glaring omission in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!  Seriously, if we include only one NES run (and there should definitely be more than that), this is the game that'll get the best reaction.  Probably the best choice is Tyson himself (if for no better reason than to offer up video proof that the 3 year's unbeaten challenge booth challenge is in fact possible), though if we need something shorter either Flamenco 1 or Super Macho Man are really impressive too.  I'd say Sandman as well, but the intentional self knockdown might be a headscratcher to the audience even with an explanation.

Stage 6, timestamp of the run: 3:16. while it's not a Cave of Wickedness stage it's about as fast of a kill as you can possibly get on any stage past the first few, and it has taunting at the end Smiley

This one shows one of the most frustrating sequence breaks in the game, getting it done in the 'first' attempt is a good sign that the runs is going to be great.

or

12:56 - 13:28
Shows a cutscene with a goof (due to sequence breaking) and the boss gets instantly raped. It's probably not the best ownage ever since it was a NG+ run but it is one of the shortest in the game.

Edit 1:
I read that the clip can be up to 2 minutes so the best part is really:

11:57 - 13:29
Starts off with Jason using the Jet Pack to the end of the mech battle (one with the goof cutscene).

or

3:43 - 5:40
Starts off with Jason in the tunnels going to the secret room for the Golden Shotgun (New Game+) and finishes off by destroying the spider bot.

I'll add some more later to include runs I didn't make.

New Super Mario Bros Wii

- Segment 4 World 5-4
0:19 - 1:21
If you know 7-2 on NSMB DS, this is a similar case on NSMB Wii. Screw the transport, UCpro has got the skills here.

Well the only runs I've had posted this year (to date) are the two Vectorman games so I had best try for something from those.

Vectorman 2 10:01 - 10:25: skipping dropping down into the pit in scene 18. Shame no one knows this game cause this is a really cool trick Sad
For Vectorman I'm really struggling to think of anything that's particularly impressive, because it's not especially difficult nor is there an exceptional amount of strategy variety. The best I can think of is the entirety of stage 3 (2:03 - 3:20), but if this clip were used it would definitely need an explanation about up-right shooting.

Oh and if we can use clips from runs in the queue, my S3K Knuckles run has a couple of neat moments:
Hydrocity 2 (4:39 - 5:36) - Precise superglide on top of the wall to activate level skip, followed by perfect boss kill
Launch Base 2 (17:42 - 18:35) - Series of really precise ramp jumps (the one at 17:53 is a highlight!) culminating in first boss kill
Flying Battery 2 (27:16 - 28:21) - Starts at entering the laser boss, skips the laser boss (this will need explanation, thankfully there is plenty of dead time immediately afterward), finishes with super smooth boss kill

EDIT: It would be remiss of me not to mention runs of games that I know really well:
Donkey Kong 64 (13:17 - 14:13) - starting from bananaport, scales the climb up to Angry Aztec... and glitches into Crystal Caves along the way Smiley
Rocket Knight Adventures - so much awesome stuff, how do you choose?! Maybe the first phase of Axel Gear in stage 7 (23:37 - 24:05).
Highly Evolved
Dragon Warrior III
Part 10
12:22-13:55  Baramos Battle.

Explanations:  Selecting parry, canceling, and then selecting a new command keeps the action and the effects of parry.

Baramos has a hidden regeneration, which recovers 90-109 HP after every turn.

I'll make a suggestion for Startropics if that game makes an update before Magfest.

SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)
I don't know if we can promote our very own videos or not (not like that hasn't happened before), but I would like to make a few proposals...

1) Megaman powered up- Fireman vs CWU-O1P (stage starts at 27:36, water part 28:00, boss fight at about 28:45...  In case you wanted to include parts of it... Personally, I would pick half the water part, full boss)  This was probably the best part of my whole run...  execution was good as it would get, and besides taking a few hits, it was still done pretty well considering all he had was his shield...
2) Hero 3 from Half Minute hero:  The 2nd fastest speed run on the site (and the fastest run that actually requires you to do more than just press A... although that is still an awesome run...)  Otherwise I could suggest Hero 300...  Hero 30 isn't anything to fancy compared to Hero 3 and hero 300...
3) Prinny: Can I really be a hero?:  To be honest I don't know any defining moments from this game, but I'm suggesting it since we had three separate PSP games submitted this year and it would be a kicker to including stuff from all three games...

I wonder though if GTA4 should also get an honorable mention... You know, the game that had split SDA down the middle and was the only game to get reverified and accepted after a rejection...  That was a pretty big event...

I'll suggest more as I can figure out more...

Quote from Breakdown:
I believe the current Mario 3 run was in last year's too, and that hadn't been posted yet.

Hotarubi's Super Metroid 14% was in 09's and was also not up at the time.

Also, apologies if off-topic, can those of us participating in the marathon (but not MAG) get a copy of the panel video?

Edit: Trebor's Metroid Prime 22% was "in progress" but was in the EGM video, so that's another of note.

Gonna go biased here with Minish Cap, because the Ocarina glitch is pretty wow the first time you see it.  I'll suggest either 88:33 - 89:08 (a tiny mistake at the start, unfortunately) or 119:45 - 120:20.  First one skips most of the fourth dungeon after the lantern, second one skips over half of Dark Hyrule Castle, but both are probably the best examples of what the glitch can do.

The boss fights don't look that impressive, so if you want a fight from the game go with the first darknut fight in Castor Wilds, from 53:02 - 53:14.

The timestamps are from the embedded video on the game page, btw.
Exoray
For Disney's Aladdin I'd say include the Jafar fight at 16:40 to 17:00.
This is a good part because that fight is what people mostly remember from when playing that game and how difficult the fight was. Also there's a magfest challenge this year that involves beating Jafar so it's even more fitting.

I'd suggest 10:05-10:34 from the Star Fox 64 any%.  It's a ridiculously fast and clean kill against Star Wolf; they're only alive for 14 seconds in total.  Also, you always need more Star Fox. :]

Quote from Sir VG:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (XBLA Run) 18:48-19:24 - Include because romscout nailed the Richter skip in one try.  | The Richter skip allows you to ignore getting the Silver and Gold Rings, needed to get the Holy Glasses, which are normally needed to beat Richter the 'correct' way and thus not get the bad ending.

If you're going to use a Richter skip clip, take it from my 31:19 run in the queue because I pulled it off much more cleanly in that run. Time is approximately 18:15 (entering the Keep area) to 18:44 (warping to the inverted castle); time stamps are based on the YouTube video.

I agree with Breakdown that more NES titles should be in the video because there are a lot of classics that still resonate with people. I'll try to come up with a few NES suggestions:

1. AndrewG's 8:13 SMB2J (Lost Levels) run; 5:00-5:26. This isn't the original SMB, but it looks just like it and stage 5-2 should catch people's attention with a warp glitch similar to the one in 4-1 of the SMB run. This glitch looks wackier and cooler than the one in the SMB run, anyway.

2. Croc-Doc's 1:05 Donkey Kong run; 0:12-0:28. This is the first stage of the run, which has the notable ladder glitch. I think this run was featured on last year's panel video too, but the ladder glitch is still a cool trick in a game a lot of people at MAG will be familiar with (I swear there were like 830283023 DK machines there!).

3. AND4H and TheFirstKnight's 30:52 Bubble Bobble run; 16:02-16:32. This clip is just the two brothers tearing through stages 55+56 in the run. I kinda randomly chose those 2 stages after rewatching the run, but it looks crisp and quick, as opposed to some of the late stages that require some dicking around.

4. Seth Glass's 27:49 Mega Man 2 run; first of all, how did no one nominate this run yet? wtf? Secondly, there are 2 clips I think could work for this game, but which one is chosen kinda depends on what you think will get a better response from the audience. I'm not so sure myself, so I'll just post both ideas.

7:55-8:38; zipping around Wood Man's stage. It looks cool and would probably stun most viewers.
12:15-13:21; kind of a long clip for this, I know. If you ever wanted a testament to speed runners' memories though, this is it. It's where he zips and then does Quick Man's stage without being able to see the screen properly. It might be more confusing than impressive to people though, which is why I'm iffy on it. I'd probably just go with the Wood Man clip, but maybe this one could work better. I dunno.

5. Bablo's 12:21 Castlevania run; 2:37-3:11. Another instance of "how did this run not get nominated yet?". This clip is Bablo smoothly demolishing the 2nd level. It has 2 damage boosts  through the floor in it, which is always a neat little trick for people to see even if it's old news.

If I think of more NES stuff today, I'll make sure to post again. Here are clips from other runs that I think would be cool to put on there:

1. Tiki's 42:23 MMX3 run; 33:45-34:16. Doppler elevator skip!

2. tjp's 0:23:xx DKC run; 14:00-14:48. I know Blackout Basement has been showcased in the past, so I figured Minecart Madness done with a distinct lack of minecart would be nice for this time.

3. Aftermath's 2:32 Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow run; 2:10-2:50. Rather than showing the buildup with the big glitch in the run, just show the aftermath (tee hee). Skips the first boss, and then heads straight to the ending.

That's what came to mind for now.

Nice suggestions, romscout.  Can you think of something for Final Fantasy?

Also, I like Rakuen's suggestion.

While we need more old school games in the video, it'd still be a good idea to find some clips from some new and popular games that so far have not been mentioned.  For instance, something from Batman: Arkham Asylum would be a good idea, because it's a popular game with a sequel coming out soon. The problem is I can't think of something in particular from the run that should make the video, though.  My suggestions [I can find the times later]: 1) hitting Zsasz with an RC batarang (short and sweet, but not exceptional) 2) double titan fight in botanical gardens [maybe a bit long, but better use of the game than the batarang] 3) ziplining in Croc's lair [recognizable part of game, and quick, but not exceptional] 4) flying straight to the high ledge from the huge gap outside of the batcave (only problem with this is whether lay people would realize this was a shortcut) or 5) one of the many combo-full goon fights where many critical strikes were strung together.

And speaking of popular games, we should probably find something from Call of Duty. I'm not much of a CoD fan, so somebody else should look for a clip.

Oh, and as for games that should have been mentioned by now, Marble Blast Gold.  I dare you to find a moment of this that should NOT be on the video.  Also, F-Zero X.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned a Zelda: OOT clip yet?

Spelunky looks like a good candidate for the finale. I also suggest going all the way this year and showing TWO full runs... I'm looking at you YHTBTR.
