SDA Speedruns: 1
Hey.  I'm new here.  Looked around and saw that there are no FF8 runthroughs and I though I might give it a try.  I've never done a runthrough but I know the jist of it.  I've played FF8 a bunch of times and know it all by heart.  I can't give an approximation of how long a runthrough could be done since I've always done the extras each time I played.  I just wanted to post and see if this site is interested.  If a normal runthrough isn't good enough, I can try a no level gain runthrough that I don't think would take too much longer than a normal one, and would look a lot better.  I'd need two or three days to see if it's possible and how long it'll take but I want to see first if a speedrun site is interested.

welcome to the machine
If you can finish it quickly enough, there's no reason why it wouldn't be accepted.

Finally, someone trying FFVIII. I'd like to help you as much as I can becuase I've wanted an FFVIII run to be done for a while. AS for the normal vs no level, I'm thinking that they wouldn't be too different. I'd say that a speedrun of FF8 should be done with a level no higher than 10 or so for the best result. Post some strategies or anything about your run,  and as I said before, I'll try to help out any way I can.

Hey. I highly doubt this game will ever be done in under 7 hours, but under 8 would still be nice to see.

Heck, it took me over an hour (game time) to get done with the SeeD mission. Maybe I'm just slow...

Remember to segment the run like crazy (one before every boss after you get Selphie) and abuse The End. It will take a long time to get luck in your favor, but it's much quicker than anything else.

Good luck to you, and let me know if I can help in some way.

Thanks for the support.  I'll start it today and see what I can get done and post any problems or questions.  The no level gain runthrough is a bit different since I kinda have to go a little out of the way to break some enemies or kill off people at forced experience parts.  I'm still not sure if I'm going to do a segmented one or a marathon.  Also, I'm going to record this on tape so how would I transfer it to PC?
MGS for PS1 forever.
Before you start you should have a look over at www.gamefaqs.com for the 14 hour speedrun of FF 8. Like most of us would agree, all speedruns can be done faster and even the guy who has beaten FF 7 in less than 10 hours has said that there are always new tricks and new things to be done to decrease the time, but I would think it would take quite a lot to get 14 hours down to 10 or less.

Of course, me being a huge fan of FF games...would watch a 8 hour run or a 14 hour run. Grin

Do segmented, for the love of God. Not just for your own sanity, but so it will be much faster as well.

You can record it on tape, and send it in to the people who run this site.

Yeah, I've seen the faq.  I think I could quicken it up a bit by avoiding unnecessary cards like the Rinoa card.  I'll look into others to see if necessary, like brothers and cerberus.  I know I can definately shave off a lot of time but I can't say how much it will be.  I realized this will take a while longer than I anticipated but no biggie, speedruns are fun.  Grin

I would get the one card that can change into 100 megalixers. I don't remember which card it was...but those 100 megalixers helped me finish the game. All you would have to need is about 2-3 high cards in order to win it.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
there is alot of dialogue in that game though. partly why I have never finished it to this day.

will you be doing this on the PC or PS1 version?
If you're going to be doing it by tape, the very least you could do is segment it a little under every two hours because if you're recording under SP (Which you should be), you'll be running out of tape at that point.

Bahamut's card turns into 100 megalixirs which would be sweet, but it's not worth it to get it.  I would probably use the money trick (tent > mega potion > money/elixir > megalixir) if I really need them, though I want to avoid that too.  Oh I'll be doing this on a PS2, and does it really look that much better in SP than SLP?  I compared them a long time ago (about 2 years) and saw that there wasn't too much of a difference.  And I've decided to keep my sanity:  I'm not going to do it in one run.  Wink

I also think it'd be more interesting if I just kept my strategies until I finish the final run.  I like it when I watch runthroughs and see something interesting done and think "wow, I never even though of that".
SLP and SP will look very different on another VCR.

Also, if you are going to do 'The End', is the trick for it (opening the cd drive so badguys don't attack) allowable?

Some techniques can be iffy to Radix, so it's always good to ask beforehand.
Sleeping Terror
Opening the CD drive, or otherwise messing with hardware, is not allowed.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Enc-None is possible to get very early on in the game... i would imagine fighting Diablos as soon as you get out of Balamb Garden is worth it especially if you use the Demi 'trick' with him...

the 14.5 hours is probably much longer than its possible to do... so it's probably quite possible to get it down to 10hrs or so... after that, i don't know...
MGS for PS1 forever.
Isn't Enc-None 200? Even if you started putting points into it within the first 30 minutes of the game...I would think it would still take several hours to even be able to use it.
BOOM!!!!!
ALL RIGHT my fav Final Fantasy is getting a run, this should be good.

Well, I wouldn't get too happy so soon.

I think The End is really cheap and I will not use it.  If anything I'll probably not save that much time anyway and definately not in real life.  The End is extremely improbable especially at lower levels and will make the runthrough basically completely based on luck, not strategy.  Strategies for all bosses are currently being tested using minimal supplies and time.  The more I find out the more I like this and I think the run will be very good (god I love this game).  No cheats of any sort will be used.  One thing I need to know:  when you have to get the Student ID in Delling City, can you save then go check the ID and reset to save time?  I don't know if you can do that and I think that would be cheating if I could, but I'm not sure.
BOOM!!!!!
doesn't the id change each time you load your save up?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
perhaps it doesn't if you use the 'soft reset'..
BOOM!!!!!
it might select a number at random when you select new game and keep that one.

either way i doubt you'll be allowed to cut it out.
King of hearts
Yeah, I think that would be considered cheating anyway.
?
Although I'm not sure if it would change, I can say that it wouldn't be considered cheating, as a very similar techinuqe was used in Majora's Mask where he had to get the bombers code and did so then reset.  Just thought I'd give you a heads up.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
ahh, yeah, there's nothing to say you can't go to the the tomb, and use the soft reset as soon as you get the code, so you don't have to spend time walking back - that might be slightly quicker on videotime, and obviously quicker on gametime.
