Gonna have to say Ballz. It's a versus fighting game where the AI is pretty good, the controls are awful, and the game runs at an incredibly annoying speed. Actually finishing 'arcade mode' is a feat of luck or insanity.

Don't know what's my hardest game, but I'm pleasantly surprised because I can finish some games mentioned here without a lot of effort. Smiley

Devil May Cry 3 on DMD was difficult enough to make me want to scream at the TV, but I didn't feel cheated when I died (except Mission 19. I ****ing hate Mission 19). So much that I actually never used items on my first DMD run (except Mission 19. I ****ing hate Mission 19).

Just finished God Hand on Hard mode a couple of days ago, but wouldn't consider it my hardest experience ever. I did use a crapload of Continues, but failure is not supposed to reflect difficulty on its own (I died over 200 times on my first Super Mario Galaxy run, the game is pretty easy overall). Guess I always felt that I just needed a little bit of extra luck, and when it finally happened I breezed. Unlike Ninja Gaiden, where you have to memorize layout and spawn points down to the pixel. God that game is cheap.
If the definition is to beat a game without cheats/walkthrough and on default difficulty, my vote would go to Solomon's Key for NES. Ok, it's far from impossible to do in one go even without the continue code, but only after mucho practice on each room with emu and having read a walkthrough in order to understand the purpose of all the hidden items. I seriously think it would be a life-time project to beat the game for the best ending (which is pretty much required since the other endings clearly tell you that you have missed stuff) with only the manual as help. The manual could have told you everything about constellation signs, pages of space and time and how to save the princess, and it would still have been one of the toughest game out there (at least before the era of emus). Instead, the manual writers tried to be as cryptic as possible as if they were scared of "giving" it all away and that kids would find it too easy. For those who know the game, think about how anyone would be able to find the constellation sign in level 46...

I have yet to see a game with save/password/unlimited continue that can be considered super challenging (unless run on some insane difficulty setting maybe). I think for example that Ghost 'n Goblins' reputation is slightly exagerated because of the unlimited continues. The game might be tough to play, but there are many games that are harder to beat.

As far as I'm concerned, you haven't beaten the game unless you did so on one credit.

Nah that was ok but its just i was wondering why a debate was starting and not people just talking about there personal opinion about the hardest game they played. But its cool now that we got it sorted back to the original topic thanks for being honest

Yes thats what i mean mostly and like playing it like the first time ever and then saying like "__  _    _____" <---(INSERT Game Name HERE) Is the hardest game I ever played or (Same as above) is hard or similar and then that game would be the hardest for you.

Sounds like you're more hardcore than me. If that rule is applied everywhere, some games might be a bit annoying to beat (more than one rpg springs to mind). Personally, I don't think twice using continues or saves or whatever the programmers put there for you. But sure, those who have beaten gng on one credit have definately the right to be proud.

I was only talking about arcade games.  I definitely count using saves in rpgs as beating them, heh.

Arcade games are just designed to be played on one credit, and give you continues only so they can make more money, is all.

I agree on GnG. But Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts has unlimited continues and I cannot beat it casually. If I get hit and lose my powered-up weapon, it's hopeless.
Why so serious?
I'm going with Silver Surfer.

Battletoads Co-op is really close behind though....

He's back!
Interesting how everyone mentions games which are hard because it's easy to die in. What about games which are hard because they have difficult puzzles with illogical solutions, or where it's hard to figure out what to do or where to go. For example the AVGN covers one of the puzzles in Castlevania 2 where you had to duck for 10 seconds while holding an item in a specific spot. I think some of the point and click games would make good examples.

EDIT: Try one of those escape point and click flash games
werewolf the last warrior.
I am afraid no ones riding nothing!!!

QFT. I finished this game the first day that I had it. I don't recall when I was first able to 1CC it, but it wasn't long after I owned the game. There were very few NES games that I couldn't complete on an overnight rental period back in the day. Most were RPGs that just took too much time. It took me 2 weeks to finish Final Fantasy when I borrowed it from a friend!
Try playing Majora's Mask with some lousy hardware.
Seriously, in my entire game library, no game has crashed as much as my Gold Cart MM. The other day, I turned it on and I got a red bar of death right after the Nintendo logo. I was doing the couples mask miniquest, and the game crashed on me 3-4 times... and you can't save or anything, you have to start from the beginning. Also, the controller port is messed up, so if you try to run you sometimes walk at a snail's pace, and you just simply can't aim an arrow on horseback because any joystick movement shakes the camera violently.

But for games that are hard, F-Zero GX is probably the toughest game I've ever beaten. And by beaten I mean 100% collect everything you can on a console. Hardest part is probably the tunnel thing on hard where you have to drive perfectly at top speed through gaps that are 2 hairs wider than your car.

I still haven't beaten that stage on expert, and I even beat the stupid stage 7 race. But it's still one of the best racing games. Smiley

I still haven't beaten three races in F-Zero GX... Undecided
Simply the whole F-Zero series consists of challenging and rather hard games. Myst's pretty tough too.

Wow, an sdkess post. I seriously thought this was 2005 and this was a previous version of this thread. I had to double-check the dates.

Everyone who thinks their NES choice is the hardest game ever should first play NES Ikari Warriors. Wink Let's find an NES game vgmr can't beat and sort this shit out.

Edit: If you read all the choices, this is clearly the most embarrassing thread at SDA. Sad

Dragon's Lair and Mission Impossible work too.

Are you sure about the unlimited continues for SGnG ? I'm pretty sure they were limited, but I think it was possible to get more (never really figured out how). It's true that you were out on thin ice after dying though. Losing the upgrades sucked. IIRC it was possible to get back the golden armour without too much effort on the last level though. Always something, because beating the final boss with the bracelet was hard, but I guess you know all about it... Many shmups have the same problem with losing all the upgrades for no real reason after dying, making the game close to impossible unless you could pull off a no-death run (Gradius, R-Type, ...).
Let's fight to computer!
The hardest game I've ever beaten would probably be Ninja Gaiden Black on Hard. I don't know if I could pick the hardest game I've ever played. There's a huge pile of arcade games I've never beaten because I'm shit at them, and I couldn't really say which out of them is the hardest.

ugh. that story mode was torture. doesn't help any that some time after i completed it, my data got corrupt and i had to do it all over again.

one of the hardest feats i had to overcome was in Final Fantasy X. the Thunder Dodging minigame. that's difficult enough by itself. but at the time i was doing it, my TV was on its last leg. it flickered on and off with absolutely no warning. and lightning was guarranteed to strike whenever the screen flickered. it's a fucking miracle i was able to pull that off.

Games that kicked my butt badly when I played them (way back when):

Trojan (NES):  Anyone ever play that?
Metal Gear (NES):  I never got past the first level Tongue

Yeah, I was really bad at NES games way back when.

I'm actually wondering why noone bothered to do a speedrun for Trojan ? It's pretty enjoyable and very short. I'm not taking it on because of the annoying fact that you need to constantly jump (faster than walking) and because there are already several speedruns on youtube (some might have been done on emu, but I don't think all of them used savestates). For someone just craving to get a run posted on sda, I believe it to be a good choice though.
Everybody loves Hypnotoad!
I didn't get into gaming until the N64 era, so I missed a lot of the ridiculously hard games.  That being said, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 is very hard, especially if you go for rankings.
