Also, is it just me, or was the old Simpsons arcade game that was ubiquitus in arcades back in the mid 1990's really tough too?

Yes... well it depends. How many quarters did you have? I beat this game when I was 11 or 12, but I think it ended up costing about 5 bucks. I remember having a crowd when I beat Mr. Burns lol.
Obscure games ftw

The hardest games I've ever beaten.......

Guitar Hero 3 - Expert= not easy!!!!!
That's all I can think of...

Does that mean just the career or TTFAF too?
But I totally agree.
Battletoads, Ghosts n' Goblins, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red and Blue (extra mode is just insanely ridiculous if you don't hack it)

Those are my worst.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
Super Meat Boy is slowly approaching this list for me. AND I'M GOOD AT PLATFORMERS! XD However, I've now nearly 100%'d the game and I don't own it... I still played quite a few hours though.

Arcade games in general are insanely difficult, reason being that companies wanted to actually make money when people went into an arcade...so the difficulty was ramped up.

Take any of the titles mentioned here and play the arcade version of the same title and you'll be a BIT surprised at how the difficulty has changed. Wink For example, try Ghost n' Goblins on arcade, gotta be twice as hard as the NES version. Some of you also said Lost Levels. Play Vs. Super Mario Bros on arcade or MAME (I'd say it's harder to 100% complete it than Lost Levels). Donkey Kong on arcade is also quite difficult TO BEAT, I mean reach the kill screen. It's not all that difficult to get 30 or even 40 levels in, but 117 on 4 lives is another story. I have yet to reach the kill screen even with a few months of practice. :/

Arcade games are quickly becoming some of my favorite titles because I love losing at video games obviously.
Devastation
Alien Soldier on hard mode. It's like impossibly hard. But hey, that's just me.

Zombies ate my Neighbors is as well. I got to level 20 something iirc, but I haven't played it in many years.

Megaman X6 is pretty stupid hard on Xtreme. It would be harder if the game had real game overs like in X4, but if you play, you WILL die at least a few times no matter how many times you play it assuming you don't use Zero Armor/Super Nova.

Ninja Gaiden 3. Kind of obvious... The US version is broken pretty much.

Devil May Cry 3 on DMD... But tbh I'm not that good at the DMC games.
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!

Yeah, I second this, actually.  I briefly tried to practice for my MM:tPB run using MAME (I break square buttons), and it's a very different game from the PS2 version, and much much harder to run, especially for time.  It's a relatively simple game, itself, but the difference between MAME and the PS2 re-release is still noticeable.
super mario is amazing
SMW... on VC... w/ a GC controller. y/x is run, b is jump, a is spin jump, and you're using a joystick. yeah...

Can't you change the controls?
Hardcore Donkey Kong Player!
Obviously, there is a lot of hardcore arcade games. For me, Robotron 2084 (arcade) is a really hardcore game, I die within 5 minutes (however, some people can last 60 hours playing this game, but I obviously can't lol). Except for arcade games, I find pretty hardcore Ninja Gaiden (reached the last boss after hours of swearing, but couldn't beat that last boss).

However, it depends on how you play the game. For me, Donkey Kong (MAME) will have to be the hardest game I've ever played, because I not only try to finish the game, but make the most point possible. It's the same thing for speed run: A game can be really easy, but once you speed run it, it can become the hardest game ever!
Obscure games ftw
SMB Lost Levels is REALLY hard, got to try it on Saturday on an SNES.
Made it to 2-2 before getting stuck (how the heck do you cross that pit???) with 1-1 and 2-1 deathless.
GHOULS n GHOST(genesis) This game was ridiculous how many hours I sat in one session trying to beat
this sea boss, it would have larva coming out if its back and one so random.

Ghost n Goblins(nes) snes version isnt as bad as the older ones but its still very hard.

Mission Impossible(nes)

Festers Quest(nes)

If you think the NES version of GnGoblins is bad, you should check out the arcade version.  Oy.
The Game That Really Messed Me Up Is: Heroes Of The Pacific
Planning, I suck at it. :-(
Inindo: Way of the Ninja was evil hard. If you wait too long you lose, you can get mugged by assassins on the field and even while you stay at an inn. The battle difficulty never seemed to scale very well and there was always this sense of urgency when playing it. Definitely one of the most evil hard RPG's for the SNES that nobody has ever heard of, probably due to it's difficulty. It is the only RPG that I have never been able to beat. Sad
unemployed Dragon
For some reason, Turrican II (for Amiga 500+) was very hard for me.

I remember thinking Commando (Amstrad) was impossible to finish when I was a kid. Would love to try now though.
Edit : just checked on google and apparently this game has no end ? I feel cheated. I didn't know that back then Sad
Edit2 : ok so in fact, it's a 8 levels loop.

Otherwise, Cauldron and Cauldron 2 were so hard on Amstrad too.
Waiting hurts my soul...

Another reason is it was dated from release. Being a port of an MSX game, they didn't change much.

That actually explains a lot.

Oh actually, disregard what I said, the hardest game i've ever played is Ikaruga. I really hope i'll have the courage to run this game someday for SDA... I think i'll put a cool bounty on it otherwise !
Maybe it's because I was really young, or maybe it really is hard, but the Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends is pretty much the only game I've ever been truly frustrated with. I'm also pretty sure I never got past the second stage. :|
<3
I beat Ninja Gaiden when I was 7.

I've still never beat SMB 1 or 2 Cheesy
Ghosts 'N Goblins - Arcade is now out on Wii Virtual Console.

Holy crap. Not hardest game of all time, but man it's tough. Especially Shield vs. Level 6 bosses.
Certain Touhou games- the ones where you can't use a continue if you want to finish the game

Stepmania(the hardest doable songs)- I've been playing for years and still can't quite do 20 note per second stream :'(:'(.

Call of Duty(might be because I played ppl of the same rank as my friend whose actually experienced at the game online) - I walk for 2 seconds and out of nowhere die, and go wtf happend for the entire match.(most genuine frustration I've felt from a video game in a long time)

Dragon Quest VIII - first town tells you go to the waterfall cave, I go there, get in one fight, and die wtf lol.

Probably Ninja Gaiden Black....so frustrating.
