Quote from Cevlakohn:
I'm a softcore, and too high of a difficulty turns me off of a game rather quickly. That said, the hardest games I've played significantly (though not beaten) are Ikaruga and Super Monkey Ball on Expert mode.
No, no. Expert is fine, except for a few of the storm stages. (47 particularly).
Expert Extra 9 is probably the big stopper of getting to Master, but Master is where you will need those infinite continues, particularly Master 3 and, to a lesser extent, Master 9.

F-Zero series're pretty good about making the curve steep, but rewarding-
GX V.Hard story is tough, but I think doing all the Master cups on each machine is tougher.
(Incidentally, it's more fun to beat Deathborn without abusing his Rubberbanding, and freakishly difficult. Also, you can slightly exceed the countdown in the "Escape reactor" mission. The F-Zero Grand Prix stage and the "training" stage're probably the hardest in my opinion.) On the other hand, it probably has the easiest stages labeled "Fire Field" of any of (1, X, GX, MV).

Agree with 7th Saga.
Blast Corps, particularly the Pac-man-ish stages.
Kid Chameleon.
Honorable Mentions:
Megaman 1 for Fire Man & Yellow Demon (w/o slide)
Megaman 7, Wily's little pod with elemental attacks
Wario Ware's final story stage, for tending to kill me before reaching the final break more often than not, unlike any other
Rygar(NES)'s forest boss.
Melee enemies in the latter part of Faceball 2000.
Dragon's Lair for the NES.
PAL 50Hz KILL ME NOW
@Patashu: Stepmania / OpenITG has some really killer charts, I think I played some of your charts in the SSSC2 pack (I play numpad, index).
from that pack Facebreaker is extremely difficult to me (238bpm streaming for life) and I am trying like mad to pass it...I've gotten halfway I think.

then again I think Vertex Beta v2 is difficult(haven't even FC'd it), so maybe I'm not that good.
very addicting tho, I sometimes play for hours.
Balls jerky
you linked a dossar vid hehe

Well he is pretty good, if he's bs though there's plenty of other ridiculousness out there (like samtorx's one boo on almost there edit )
... for a dream, of course.
<frustration>

Red Dead Redemption.

The beginning of, I guess, latest missions of the game: "You'll know the truth".

...

One of the most broken mission on a sandbox game that i ever seen:

1.- You're shooting a fuckin' bullet-magnet piece of shit (a gatling gun mounted on a car with no real cover appar from the gun itself).

2.- Its aim is a ***royal pain in the ass***. You can shoot at one of the bad guys face and you won't kill him. It's a matter of luck to kill someone.

3.- A bunch of guys throwing you molotov-cocktails (that instant-kill you if those explode near your car).

4.- Fifteen guys, more or less, continuously shooting at you (and not your allies) with godly precission.

5.- If you can even survive this part of the mission then the game gives you a nice ambush with guys at a couple of meters from you that, obviously, kill you with a couple of bullets.

6.- Oh, and a couple of frenzy molotov cocktails guys too.

7.- I don't even want to know what's next, really.

Fuck you Rockstar.

</frustration>
contra series

megaman series

ghost and ghouls series

i've never finished those games Sad
The absolute hardest game I played WITHOUT finishing... let's see... good question actually. Depends on definition of 'finish' really. I think I'm gonna go with Blockout (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockout). Again, definition of finishing a game is a bit stretched there. It had this progressive speed, every so often the speed of the dropping blocks would increase and the final speed level was just too much for me personally. Wink

I've never been any good at Tetris-esque games.
Hardest game i ever played :

- panaroma cotton
- alien soldier (yeah i know i'm a softy...)

SOme games people say are hard but just have a control learning curve:
- virtual on (OT)
- gunvalkyrie
That was awesome.
I wish I was lying when said Scooby Doo Mystery Mayhem, it was actually harder for me than Gunvalkyrie. :/
Hmm i forgot these as well:

Magnetic Niu Niu (or Neo Neo or Neu Neu - i don't remember)
Urban Reign
Maximo
Tatsujin Ou
Image Fight
All Psikyo games brutally rape me (although Strikers 1945 II at least includes a bit of foreplay).
Yes, a worthless avatar riding my posts.
...did you really just call Image Fight hard? That game is pretty easy to no-death, except for the somewhat cheap 3rd and final bosses.

Now the game gets really, really hard if you decide to have a low-scoring run and stop shooting...especially because of the NES's sprite limitations...but yeah, basically I only tried that because I wanted to see what would happen if you somehow failed the first 5 simulator levels.
I meant the arcade version by the way, not the NES version. I don't know if there are any differences having never played the NES version myself.
Willing to teach you the impossible
TMNT - Never beat the last lvl even with an online guide and SDA guide

Contra Shattered Soldier - Honestly never made it past stage 2

Civilization 1 - Cant beat anything at all on that

that is all I can think of atm
Parts of F-Zero GX's Master/Very Hard modes feel like the game is outright mocking your pathetic inability to reach beyond human perfection. It's doable, yeah, but you need to know the game as well as, say, Zoid knows Metroid Prime, if you get my meaning, and then have luck on your side on top of that. It's fortunate (or unfortunate) that you're actually rewarded for beating these modes by way of unlocking the final Grand Prix cup and extra racers, so that it's not just for bragging rights.

I mean, there's likely way harder stuff out there, but I'm typically chickenshit when it comes to the highest difficulties of games, so.
Formerly known as Skullboy
I am tempted to say Battletoads is the hardest game I've played. Yet Wardner also comes to mind... I have never beaten either and Wardner gives you limited continues... Shadow Dancer might be the hardest... Note that I'm talking about the Genesis versions of these games...
Wardner is the hardest. There are some jumping issues in the game that aren't present in the Battletoads and Shadow Dancer.
gamelogs.org
probably ddr for me. still a bunch of songs i can't pass.
I'd say... One of the harder bullet hells. Mushihimesama's caused quite a commotion on the internet, for example.

But the hardest game I've played would probably be Go. Then again, I guess this is a talk about video games:P
Professional Second Banana
Battletoads and Ninja Gaiden 3 are probably at the top of my list.
Obscure games ftw
Hardest 3 for me:
1. Vexx
Impossible.  I got nothing in that game, could barely do the tutorial.
2. The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning.
Although I'm sure that would change if I ever decide to start Eternal Night...
3. Jak II
Took me a while to get to/beat any mission.

Honorable mentions:
Jak and Daxter: Precursor Legacy:
I couldn't do it when I played it 5 years ago, beat it 100% in 2 days last month though.
FFX:
I used to fail at RPGs.  Now they're easy.  Haven't replayed this yet though...

and just for lulz, hardest levels.
TTFAF GH3 Expert.  ONLY guitar song I haven't beaten in the 3 GHs I have.
TTFAF GH:SH Expert+ Drums.  Look at the chart.  It speaks for itself.
SMG2: The Perfect Run:  2 hours, nothing else took more than 15.  Enough said.
Crazy-JWILD is a crazy mofo
Hardest game I've PLAYED would have to be:
TMNT  or Ghosts and Goblins...I played them way back in the day (before we gave away my childhood NES when I was about 7 or 8)...I don't think I ever got past the first stage in either.
Also Project Gothram Racing was pretty tough for me, as I am not a racing game guru.
Hardest game I've BEATEN (maybe this is a different thread?)
SMB2J (aka Lost Levels)...without warps...it's really not that hard though, when compared to the Contra's, Battletoad's, Ghosts and Goblin's of the gaming world.
Also, is it just me, or was the old Simpsons arcade game that was ubiquitus in arcades back in the mid 1990's really tough too?
Finally, it almost certainly doesn't count as a video game but it should be mentioned that any decent/recent computer running a recent copy (and I stress recent copy) of Chessmaster, Fritz, Shredder, or Junior (they are chess engines), cannot be beaten by any living human being (including World Chess Champions Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand, Topalov etc.). These aren't really computer games though...it's chess.
I know I never got close to completing Toki on the Megadrive.
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
Hardest games I've beaten are Toki and Battletoads, I think.  Bangai-O has some rough levels, but it's a "figure it out" rather than speed or HEC.  Still, all three were very rewarding to beat.

I suck at 4X games (Civ, Master of Magic, So on), but I love them... they're really hard for me, and I enjoy the challenge.  I beat Alpha Centauri on normal last year, and haven't had the guts to move up and die more working on my strat >_>

The only game I've ever put my honest hand into and never beaten is Gradius (NES), and I'm not sure why.  I love SHMUPS, and I'm good at them (mmmmm Life Force 2P by myself) but Gradius always seems to eat me.  It's hella hard for me.

I thought Kid Chameleon should get a mention too, since I hadn't beaten it until a few weeks ago... booted it up and cleared it in one go, with two lives to spare...  clearly, knowledge from my childhood + better HEC = win ^_^
Bane of the Sith
The hardest games I've ever played.......

Duck hunt - seriously, how many people have BEATEN this game?
Oblivion on the hardest difficulty- I can't really quite do it

The hardest games I've ever beaten.......

Guitar Hero 3 - Expert= not easy!!!!!
That's all I can think of...
