My feelings on The Demon Rush
It is well-known on our IRC channel that PJ loves bad, obscure games.

Well one day, PJ and romscout had a round of one-upmanship, which finally culminated in a mystery game exchange, where the two had to exchange games, and the other person wouldn't know what it was, but they had to speedrun it anyway.

PJ sent romscout Plok, an underrated platformer that has some cheap hits, but great graphics and some cool concepts (like firing your own limbs).

Romscout sent PJ Mo Hawk and Headphone Jack, a game that looks like the SNES went on a bender and threw up all over itself with mode 7. Watch a video here if you don't believe me. WARNING: If you easily get motion sick, don't watch the video. This game also nearly drove PJ to tears on stream.

So what I'm proposing is a bad game exchange. There are a few conditions before participating in this.

-The game can't already have a run on the site (so nothing like Deadly Towers)
-The game can't be very popular. The game you choose shouldn't be incredibly well-known.
-You have to speedrun the game you're given.
-No RPGS or super long games. The game should probably be about an hour at most.
-Having a backloggery helps so no one sends you a game you already have by accident. If you don't really care about making it a mystery, you can just ask the person you're trading with has the game you want to send.
-Lagoon and Batman Forever are off-limits, because PJ actually wants to run those games.
-If you can't figure out what "poverty gaming" means, then this exchange is not for you. (think b-movie or Bad Street Brawler)
-The exchange can't occur until during or after the marathon, because a lot of us will be too busy until then. However, if you want to bring the game you want to trade to the marathon to avoid shipping costs, by all means go ahead.

NES, Genesis, and SNES games would work best for this challenge, but if you find a newer game that fits the guidelines, then go for it.

You don't have to have the game as long as if you have the funds to buy it (like on ebay) and ship it to the person you're exchanging with.

Ok, I am dedicating this post to listing everybody who is interested in exchanging, their preferences, active trades, and pending trades.  When the trades go public I'll list what games are being exchanged.  For new volunteers, just post in here with your preferences and I'll add you to the thread.  For existing volunteers, if you partnered up and found games to exchange, let me know so I can approve them and change your status.  Sound good?

neskamikaze - GB, GBC, N64.  No racing, RPGs, FPSs, or fighting games

PJ - NES, SNES, GB/C, GBA, Genesis are the preferred.  Can also manage N64, GCN, or Wii.  No racing games, puzzles, fighters.  Do your worst.

VorpalEdge - SNES, Genesis, GCN (+gb/c/a via gameboy player), PS/2.  Restrictions: I'm not PJ, so don't send me something that will make me want to kill myself. :p  Ideally under 30 minutes.

Trekhaak - NTSC or PAL N64!  Do your worst.

pootrain - PAL SNES, Mega Drive, PS1, GC, Wii, 360.  No RPGS, racers, fighters.

Good luck to everybody!  Have fun.  Wink

I think that sounds like fun.

Perhaps all those that want to participate should at least name the systems that they own and have a game in mind for.  For example, I would say that I have a game for PS2 to run, and I have a PS2 and Wii to run games on.

Mind you, that was just an example.  I need to look through my game library to see what I have.
I actually want to play Mohawk & Headphone Jack now. I just hope I don't blow chunks in the process Sad

Should just meet up at Fun Unlimited and buy a bad NES game in one of the cases surrounding the register and have each other go at it.

It's a really fun game!  It's just really confusing.  The map is SOOOOOOO huge and tough to navigate.  And the controls are really awkward.  Fun game though.
Awkward how?

Like sometimes jumping makes you go backwards and upside down, into an enemy.  He's really tough to control.  No other way to word it.  Haha.  It's fine once you get used to it, but it's definitely tricky to start with.

Edit:  I forgot to mention some important notes about this.  Romscout and I agreed that we wouldn't send each other RPGs.  That is just too huge of a time commitment.  Whether or not the others want to agree on this is up to them.  I suggest we just pool a bunch of names of interested people for now, and then random pair them up when we have enough.  They can then determine what conditions they want to agree upon amongst the two of them.  Of course, we could also just have interested participants state any limitations they have in the initial "volunteering" post (aka, don't want RPGs, don't want puzzle games, only have X systems, etc).

Just a thought.  Also, I'm not sure what others are thinking about the games themselves, but I bought the game for romscout.  It is his to keep.  If others want to just 'lend' a copy, that's fine too, but I'll be buying fresh copies of garbage for whoever I'm paired with.  I'll gladly sign it at some point as proof that I made that person go through that potentially horrible experience.  Again, just listing what I plan to do for future iterations.  If anybody chooses to follow that, that's their choice, just like this entire bad idea.  Haha.
i signing up for this

one specific condition: game chosen for me can't be hydlide because i'm waiting until bounties are inevitably posted for it to run it

other than that, yeah, i don't want a huge time investment like a dragon quest game, fuck that. and for the time being i can only run games on nintendo systems (nes through wii).
.
Too bad this stuff doesn't really work for PC games, or I'd be all over it. Sad

Visit my profile to see my runs!
I'm up for this.  Half the games I've run are crap.  The three games I'm considering running next: all crap.

I hope I can edit my stipulations if I think of any later.  For now, length is the major concern I share.  No RPG's.  No scrollers.  No racers.  Systems I own: NES, SNES, GENESIS, PSX (wait, can these be played on PS3's), PS2, Gamecube, PS3, Xbox360 (so certain Xbox games), Wii.

EDIT:  Oops, I guess maybe the stipulations are for later, someone said.  Meh.

I'm game for this.  If no one else minds, I'll go ahead with my stuff.

Here's my rules:

-No Racers
-No FPS

Systems that I own:
NES
Gamecube
Wii
GB, GBC, GBA (via Gamecube Player)
Genesis
Dreamcast (not immediately with me, but if I do get a DC game, I can get it)
PS2
Xbox 360

Talk to the Hand
By "not popular" I'm guessing you mean "didn't sell well", not necessarily "obscure" per se.

incidentally, why wouldn't PC games work for this? I'm a bit confused...just because there's no easy way to record a lot of PC games, especially DOS ones?

I think if you live in Utah AND are a gamer in any sort of way, not even mentioning speed runners, you know about Fun Unlimited.

By driving backwards to bypass that pesky "maximum speed" cap, and having the inhuman timing necessary to maunever through each checkpoint over the course of the lap while maintaining speeds of up to infinity.

So, in other words, "unsuccessfully".

The older PC games tend to have fairly arcane compatibility requirements. For example, I'd be completely unable to run anything that only worked in DOS, for example. Actually recording from the PC is easy. It's being able to run said games at the speeds they were originally intended to be run at can be tricky.

Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned Big Rigs, it was just an easy target and the first thing I thought of.

Another problem is that most people wouldn't be able to run the games without Dosbox.

IMW: You'll have to be more specific about scrollers, do you mean 2-d sidescrollers? That takes out pretty much 90% of the 8 and 16-bit library.

Waiting hurts my soul...
woohoo, I'm down for this. I have a lot of great bad game ideas from making up my wishlist. I even have a few games I'd like to see run that I wouldn't mind shipping out to other people.

One thing we should consider is the games people might have. I mean if I'm shipping a mystery game, how can I be sure that they don't already have that game? I wouldn't mind running an RPG. In fact, if anyone wants to send me a game on my wishlist (backloggery), then I'll make a speedrun for it.

I have a PS2 (PSX/PS2 games), NES, SNES, N64, GameCube + GBP (GB, GBC, GBA games), Wii, and Xbox 360 ready to record with. I have a Dreamcast and a Genesis, but I need an A/V cable for the DC and actually need a model 2 Genesis instead of the crap model 1 I have to be able to run games on it. I'm also willing to purchase a Saturn if I have reason to.

At some point I'm going to get the rest of the systems needed to play the games on my wishlist, so if I have a good reason to get one of them, then it'll be the next system I get.

Quote from BDA:
Some people are having trouble understanding exactly what "poverty gaming" is. All I can say is, don't get hung up on the "poverty" part and think it means cheap games, because I can go down to the pawn shop and get a Super Mario 3 cart for $2 and that is the farthest thing from a poverty game. Don't get stuck thinking you have to pick the worst game ever made, either. It's hard to really nail down the definition because it's more of a know-it-when-you-see-it thing, but basically: Play Bad Street Brawler. It should explain everything.

Edit: "Some people" mainly means me I think. I'd really like to participate though, so Mike and anyone else willing (other than the person I'm trading with obviously) will need to help screen my choices. If no one is willing, I guess I get to be left out of this.
Let's fight to computer!
