Leaderboard links for reference (as doicm said, also linked at nkiller's twitch page):

Any% - WR 1:33:01 by chibi
100% - WR 4:11:22 by THEチキン ("The Chicken", I guess?)
78 Shines - WR 2:58:20 by THEチキン
96 Shines - WR 3:21:28 by Nkiller
Race to 20 Shines (an SRL goal) - 24:43 by imDRAWN (no Japanese competition here)

Some videos (though it would be nice if the above leaderboards had video links, if possible):

Is there a list of US/JP game differences anywhere?  These are the ones I just happen to know of:

- Slight text speed differences
- JP-only Yoshi ceiling bug (are there currently any useful non-TAS applications of this)?
- JP has shorter animations when entering certain levels, such as Pianta Village (not sure which others). Whoops, I just assumed that was the case after seeing the first part of chibi's run.  It's just when you do Sirena or Pianta before Bianco.

I don't run Sunshine, but I kind of follow speedrunning activity on it.

Edit: Clarified the 20 shine race category.  Yes, as far as finishing the game goes, we still need 49 shines: 1 from Delfino Airstrip, 6 from Bianco Hills, and 7 from each of the other six stages.

Can someone please explain the 20 shines category please? One would think that somebody would've posted a new low% route for that on this thread by now.

EDIT: I see that it's just an arbitrary race goal.

Do people agree that Jpn and eng should be separate category, because it's not only a matter of text, it's also with the glitches? Thanks to hiddenpower13, I think I'm going to restart practicing this game so that why I'm informing myself because I don't feel like buying the game in japanese and I imagine that the console isn't the same too, so...

I only know that when entering Sirena or Pianta before the Bianco statue is raised in the plaza, the small sequence where the camera view changes is skipped. Japanese text saves about 10~20 seconds over English from faster text. The Yoshi ceiling bug could be used in Ricco 8 but it's risky - then again, Yoshi skip in Pianta is much riskier. I can't think of other places. The English version, instead of the ceiling bug, has the infinite flutter trick which involves mounting and dismounting Yoshi over and over in the air, but it's useless.

You start from a 1 shine file (also called race file at speedrunslive since you can conveniently start from them to skip all the intro cinematics) - this file is created by saving and quitting right after Mario arrives in the plaza. The goal is to acquire so many shines until you have 20 total.

@ AndréLucLévesque: Japanese version saves like 10~20 seconds in any%, a bit more in other categores - just from faster text. The Yoshi ceiling bug is never used in any% and it might be useful in other categories, I don't know... probably not .

---

Gelato 8 shine early is pretty useless, I was barely 15 seconds ahead and since it was a TAS I didn't need to look what fruit Yoshi wanted, it's hard to set up and pull off and you have to unlock Yoshi first so it requires doing half the levels in Gelato and come back later. Forget about using this in your run, I have doubts it will even be used in an any% TAS.

wasn't there also a glitch in sirena beach with the pineapple you need to get and the pool shine also(it was probably me being too noob to succeed them Tongue ), anyway, I was sure the difference were more important than this, so I'll restart practicing this around this weekend I think.

HiddenPower13: 2012-06-14 04:25:45 am
Mugg is quite right about what he said. Japanese version really doesn't make all that much of a difference in any%, except for the slightly faster text. Some characters actually have more textboxes in the jpn version than in the eng version, for example the hotel manager in Sirena Beach episode 6 and the mayor in Pianta Village episode 6. However, the overall text speed is just faster in general, making the text faster overall.

The glitch you are talking about is in Sirena Beach episode 3. You can use any fruit you want to clip your way to the shine without having to feed Yoshi. In case you've forgotten about it, you can watch this to get a vague idea on how it works:

Then, you can watch how the WR holder does it:

Speaking of the WR holder, you might want to check out his WR run on youtube. He uses some super sweet and risky strats, and while you might not want to do everything he does, I'm sure watching the run will prove to be useful, one way or another.
Main Work!!!
Thanks for showing me this, I've already start looking at his WR yesterday(part 1 and 2 and I'll probably look at the other part today). and yes I'll use every strat he use, otherwise, where's the challenge Tongue . I notice some minor(less than 1 second mistakes) and medium mistakes(less than 5 seconds mistakes) which mean, it's beatable, it will be incredibly hard but I'll try as much as I can. I'll start practicing the new strats I saw and I'll see this weekend and I'll restart practicing the game ASAP.

One thing i got to mention is that the current WR 100% guy said he had one bathroom break while doing his run, hehe ;).
Edit history:
HiddenPower13: 2012-06-16 11:05:35 am
That guy also made insanely non-WR worthy mistakes like getting beaten by Gelato Beach Piantissimo (while trying to grab a difficult to reach blue coin I guess, but that's still no excuse). Needless to say, 100% is not optimised at all.

It doesn't matter, though. The current any% WR holder said he is practising 100% now, and as soon as he starts running it, you can be assured he'll get the WR easily. In fact, he's probably going to make the 100% WR impossible to get for anybody else lol.

Just an FYI: in case Sarashi doesn't work, when viewing Nico videos you can also always take a video page's URL and paste it onto a bar on this page:

Guys,

we are so close, soooooo close to writing Super Mario Sunshine speedrunning history. I'm talking about the long-desired Gelato Beach Skip (clip into the shine inside the glass to unlock all episodes, preferable from episode 1)

Here is a video that shows the general idea behind this:

Basically, you need at least one fruit, possibly 2 to do this (maybe). The goal is to be pushed inside the glass by talking to the Pianta. So I suppose, we want to clip behind the Pianta using the fruits and then talk to him to be pushed inside. The shine has been proven to be real, so no worries.

I encourage everybody to play around with this. One person at TASvideos claims to having done this once, though there is no proof of that and he supposedly needed like 6 hours to get it to work.

But yes, if this was to work out, we could simply unlock all the episodes, which means that we can simply skip to the Shadow Mario episode since that is how Corona Mountain is unlocked in any%. Needless to say, this would not only save quite a bit of time, but also skip the stage with the most waiting-intensive shines, making the pace of the run much better.

Good luck to everybody trying this, it would be amazing if we could make this happen!
Touhou anyone? :D
If this could be perfected, that would save so much time! I'd love to see someone run this again with all these new tricks!
That skip would be amazing to see. No sand bird. No wiggler. No race. No ground-pound-annoying-quackers-off-shiny-platforms...thing.

Most importantly though, in 100%, no having to bring giant watermelon to get crushed or fallen off bridge with all hopes and dreams.......anyway. Yeah, this'd be pretty neat to see. Smiley

nice find, hope this is going to eventually work thumbsup . Been restarting practicing my SS, up to now everything goes well(I still suck at the pianta village yoshi skip), I should restart subbing 1:40 in like two weeks.
I've been playing around with this trick, and you don't need the fruit to clip into the floor. You just need to groundpound at the right distance in front of the shopkeeper

I'll keep you informed if I find it :O

That would be awesome if we figured out that Gelato Beach skip, but I also have another "skip" idea of sorts.

Using the Yoshi Skip trick in Pianta village, isn't is possible to use it on episode 1, thus skipping to episode 5? Just a thought. (I've never been able to pull off the Yoshi Skip for some reason, but for those who can, try it! :P)

(Also, this is my first post on this site. Wooo)

nope, the loading zone isn't there sadly.
Damn, Nintendo really had the loading zones figured out in this game. xD
Just got 1:39:49 any% using natural route (Bianco Hills first, Pianta Village last)

I'm satisfied for the rest of the day, but truth to be told, that's as long as my satisfaction will last lol. The run really wasn't all that great in hindsight. Worse than average luck as well. The only thing I nailed was the Eel, which was pretty much on WR level. That pretty much made the sub 1:40 possible.

I guess in the future, I'm going to implement the Yoshi skip in my any% runs and try to become 3rd best in the wold (will have to sub 1:38:54 for that).

I might also consider trying out a different category but not sure yet. I'm just going to think about that a bit.

Anyway, I'm happy right now. That's all that counts.

Does that mean I have the 2nd best time(Last time I check about this, I though there were a couple of run that were faster than mine). Anyway, shouldn't last for too long since I'm restarting to get some consistency, the spot that I can't nail perfectly is the yoshi skip(it always take me like 1 to 3 minutes to do it(even in the 1:38:35 I have)). the run should be ready and should look good for the marathon, I'll be trying to beat the WR until then but I'll only TRY of course, Chibi run look so TAS in a lot of places.
I guess if you put it that way, you are technically the 3rd best right now. I forgot about your time because I have never seen any footage of you playing, as opposed to chibi and Tobou. Of course, I believe in your skill level Smiley
Anyway, the 2nd best time is Tobou's 1:34:02, not that far away from chibi.

And omg if what you say about the Yoshi Skip is true then your skill must be absolutely ridiculous. Like, if you waste MINUTES trying to get the Yoshi Skip but you still manage to get these amazing times, then you must be close to WR level for sure.

Looking forward to seeing you play man. ^_^
Main Work!!!
I'll practice the yoshi skip(it's what I have been doing the last few days) as soon as this is done I'll try to pimp something with the capture card and stuff I have to live stream(My equipment is pretty cheap and I think that I'll need to buy new stuff anyway). The worst scenario case would be at the marathon, but I should do something before that.

Snowboard Assassin
Recently I picked this game back up, and despite being my favorite Mario game and most dedicated to it, there's still a lot I need to learn. I tried a practice speed run of 50 stars (any% I guess, and single segmented) yet it ended badly. Because I didn't save at all (only one by accident), I refuse to get a Game Over or even lose up to 3 lives Here's how my [practice] run went recently:

Biancco Hills was a good run, despite the 2 fall deaths of the first two secret worlds. Petey Piranha was easy on both Episode 2 and 5. The 8 Red Coins were easy, with the path I follow to collect them all.

In Ricco Harbor, I had so much trouble on my first battle with Glooper Blooper, which is a total disgrace. Our 2nd match up in Episode 5 went better though. In Episode 2, I tried doing that shortcut in the Blooper race, but it didn't stop the timer and give me my shine. I retried this like 3 times but nothing. So I did my casual path and it finally worked. In Episode 3, the caged shine took me a while, but it's not hard, knowing where I can come back and try to attach myself to the bottom gate. Everything else past episode 3 went decent enough.

Pinna Park, Episode 1 could be better (I know I keep saying that), but it's true. My match with Mecha Bower was sloppy. Episode 2 had another fall in the secret level. Episode 3, the 8 Red Coins of the Pirate Ship in Pinna Park were terrible; my path was muddy. Next time I'll have to track out a better path of getting all the coins. Episode 4 was good for me actually! I manged to get 2 false yoshi eggs eliminated at the same time, then I got the last 3 in one moment. Episode 5 was good, and I didn't die once in Episode 6!

Sirena Beach had it's good and very bad moments. The first episode of the Manta rays, I could do better, I just gotta learn how I can make a huge water explosion. That can help me in both Episode 1 and 6. The most irritating thing in my overall run was KING FREAKING BOO. I had to face him twice, and during the 2nd round of fruit to appear on both battles, the peppers I threw at him wouldn't affect him. Then I had to go through another round of fruit, whenever that appeared. Seriously, I'm so annoyed by the slot machine roulette that King Boo uses.

All Shadow Mario runs in Worlds 1-6 went without a sweat; and I managed to not knock into Shadow Mario and fall down being unmovable for like 3 seconds.

Noki Bay wen't a lot better, and the Eel was actually a decent run, but it can always improve. Episode 3's 8 coin run was better than I expected. Sadly, this is where I died, and got Game Over. I didn't save a lot, only once halfway through my run. So that's where I stopped my run.

-------

In my recorded time was 2 hours in and was just at the close end of Noki Bay. Better than my current personal record of 2:48, but I still have a long way to go. So this recent run didn't count. Again, it was practice, and I'll make sure to cover the faults I discovered in this run through.

My hope to finish this game in under 2 hours and 30 minutes, or even to 2 hours, single segmented of course. And non-glitched. So those glitches won't be able to help me.

Of course, this is my project, I apolgize if this doesn't belong in this exact thread. Tongue Whoever is also speed running through this game, I hope it's going well for y'all as well.
André, there's one thing I forgot to ask the whole time: What is your timing method? I always time my runs from file select. So whenever the game gives me the "no memory card found, continue playing anyway" message, I press A and start my timer then.

Btw, chibi always times his runs from reset, which I don't really understand but well that's what he does. All Japanese runners time their runs that way actually. So chibi's WR run is actually sub 1:33 if you use the file select timing method, if you think about it.
what is the 100% record? is there a video?
