i looked around for a run for SM64DS, and i couldnt find one. If i did a run of it would it be accepted here? I plan on doing an 80 star run if anyone was interested.
nearly all of those things i can do, the only exceptions being the way that you want the sound recorded and the stillness you want from the ds (considering the run would be about 1 hour 30 mins to 2 hours). Those are the only things that seem impossible for me to do.
Other than that, i have a DS lite, and i can record using a vcr camcorder that my dad has and then use a converter to put it on a cd/dvd.
Hmm... hey Matt, would you happen to have a Headphone Jack you could put into the Camcorder? Those kind of things around here are like $5 less, but if that not possible then it's alright.
But the 64 DS run. This one would be a little difficult because the control scheme from the 64 version is different from how they did this one. And also, since you're going to be using a video camera, Your gonna have to steel yourself pretty good.
Some stars were changed around, but there are 30 more stars available as well. It might be faster than the N64 version if things are spaced just right.
there are more stars, but you also need more stars (80 instead of 70) to be able to go up the endless stairs, so i doubt it would be faster than the 64 run. Although it could be close considering there are some stars that you can get in a matter of seconds.
alright, i registered because i'm probably going to be making a few posts here. I forgot to add some stuff to my other message as well. For one, the controls are different yes, but that doesnt really matter. (unless you use the stylus setup, which i dont) the only thing that matters is star placement (new ones added and old ones moved), alot of the glitches removed and the fact that there are 3 other characters that can be used. (you have to get at least mario, and luigi helps tons, wario isnt really needed and would only waste time to get)
as for the headphone things, i dont know, i would have to take a look and see if we have something like that here. If not im sure i could buy some.

It's a tradeoff between how long it takes to unlock a character and whether you're going to use the character or not. (For those unfamiliar with this version, the 3 'switch palaces' for unlocking wing cap, vanish cap, and metal cap, now unlock different characters, any of whom can be used on any level, with special abilities that render the caps unnecessary. sort of exactly like the premise in Jet Force Gemini.) Anyway, one of the courses (wing cap equivalent) is much more direct and easy to access than the others, so if you can find 80 fast stars that don't require the other two characters, go for it. (This happens to be how the current 70 star run goes, actually)
It should be possible, considering that every course has a new general purpose star where, much like red coins (which are also present), you collect 5 silver stars. I can see a lot of those being fast. Curtis Bright's list of star times for the 64 version should still be fairly accurate for this version.
well, this is the order i have so far, i just started planning really.

Good job with the planning, I really don't see anything that is valid for suggesting a different route. Really looking forward to a run of this.
Isn't there supposed to be a ds to wii connectivity thing in the near future? Will it allow you to play ds games on the wii, or have they announced anything yet about it that would help with recording? Too bad someone can't ghetto rig a capture card setup, because i think that would be possible too.
Legend and logic says that there will be a DS to Wii dealie AT SOME POINT. It'd be foolish not to considering how much Nintendo wants to synergize their DS audience with the now rapidly growing Wii one.
Until that happens though, nate's guide is the best anybody has came up with yet for sufficient quality.
Okay, point: Luigi's backflip is fucking INSANE. Triple jump + helicopter. Look for stupid insane breaks with this thing everywhere, because I guarantee you'll find them with relative ease. Curtis' list will probably have to be completely revised because of this.
alot of the levels i am playing have his backflip in mind, as you can realize, once i unlock luigi (look at the list above) i am using him nearly all the time.
and to ajax, im not planning on doing an 100% complete run, an 80 star run is long enough as it is
I finished the planning, now im just going to practice my run for a few days until i have it down pat. When i have it as perfect as i can get it for each star, i will make a single-segment run.
Expect the run within 1-5 weeks depending on how much time i have to devote to this.
if it does get rejected, i could always host it on www.wrvids.com considering the person who hosts the site i know pretty well and usually lets me host my stuff on there.

If I read up on the circuitry behind video formats and took apart a DS, I could probably make a viable video output for it. I don't have a DS though.
It outputs a (digital) signal to its LCD panels, the theory is to take that and convert it to a video format (DVI, RGB, etc). There are already devices that contain this circuitry so it could even be borrowed. When I get a DS I'll have to dissect it :|
alright, i have the path down up to the first bowser. I can complete the path with minimal screwups on a semi-consistant basis. Now i gotta memorize up to second bowser
Is getting 6 stars on JRB really advisable? I know you need 10 more stars and that early on Yoshi is really limited, but if that first star is the same first star with the raising of the ship and all... If I recall, it was among the slowest stars in the game, the other stars there were average speed at best, and surely you could make up for it in other places.
Gamefaqs indicate that this is majorly changed so it's basically impossible to give concrete advice, but your route does fly in the face of traditional SM64 speedrunning wisdom(at least in the beginning). I was wondering what changes in the game made your re-arrangement advisable and how you came to decide upon your current route-plan.
well, if you can give me any ideas for faster stars on the ds (alot of stars arent as fast anymore/have been changed around) then i will change my run.
I haven't played the DS version, but I'd be surprised if it was changed so much so that JRB became a fast level. I was just basically asking you for a more detailed explanation of your route plan since I, like almost everyone else here apparently, don't really know much about how the DS remake changed things other than that Luigi is broken and such.
My immediate instinct would be to take the 70 star run here and look at the new stars to fill in the gaps, but I'm really not sure since, as you said, a lot of stuff did change. I just noticed the route didn't get much discussion, and since you seem to be the one who actually knows about the DS stars, I was wondering about how you decided that those 80 were the faster ones.
One day I was bored and I tried to make up a 150 star run...I wish I could remember more about it but I know Yoshi gets 3 from BOB, 4 from CCM and sunshine isles, then you use mario and beat the first two Bowsers, then get Luigi and do the basement and upstairs, you need Wario for like 3 stars and Yoshi for one
But either way, abusing Luigi's backflip is the way to go :x
