Hmm. I borrowed SM64DS from my friend about two months ago and I'm already very good at it, and I'm sure I could speedrun it... the only problem is the recording Tongue If I find a good solution, I'll do a run for sure. I have a good camera, but I need a (good) way to record sound.

Anyway, did you know that there is a glitch that allows you to complete the game with just 50 stars? It's very hard though (I've managed to do it only once out of 50+ tries...) so it's not possible in single-segment runs, too bad Sad

There's also a glitch that can be used for skipping the first Bowser fight, and as the glitch is done at the very beginning of the game, it's possible to use it in single-segment runs.

I think that the fastest way of moving is long jumping, so it's a must for a speedrun. Also, make sure to use teleports (for example, you can complete BoB Star 2 in about 35 seconds with teleporting, and it takes at least 20-30 secs longer without them).

The glitch that allows you to climb steep hills can also be handy. It's very easy after some training. I almost never fail it.

I guess I may have some cables to connect the headphone port of my DS Lite to my camera. I guess I have to check.

We know that and it could be considered the Glitch% like the original's 16 Star (and 1/0 star) run

True but you can only perform the glitch as Mario, Luigi and Wario. Yoshi can't dive so it cannot go out of bounds outside of the castle. The setup does take time.

That is correct the fastest (reliable way) of speed is long jumping (LJ for short).

Tiigon have you been to the Speed Demos Archive's Knowledge Base (google it if you can't find it) and this video link below?

Yeah, but you still have to wait for koopa to climb the mountain, then you will get the star from him.

Unless they changed it from SM64, Koopa goes faster if you finish faster.
DS Dictator
There's an FAQ page on Super Mario 64 Changes and my uncompleted changes documentary on Youtube.

DS Koopa on Tiny-Huge Island is just a bit slower (by probably tenths/half of a second)
I don't know on the Bob-omb battle field since it's really easy to complete.

In the UK it's christmas day now and here is my suprise....

I'm making the Super Mario 64 DS run segmented!!

Although my firewire cable problem still isn't fixed I've found a new & novelty way of filming it. The camera setup is similar but this time I'm connecting the Multi-AV cable on to the TV and record it onto the HDD (DVD) recorder. The good thing is that no DVDs are required during recording but are required during dubbing aka transfer. The badish thing is that according to the knowledge base, you need to send them in by post (apparently DVD ripping the clips onto PC via Anri Chan/AviSynth isn't allowed) It will be a Sony DVD-R if you get them and I'll put loads of notes of each segments (screen wise).

Right now I've finished my first segment which is getting the front door key to the castle (the distance between the rabbit area and your starting point is minimal and helps me avoiding the intro for the 2nd segment).

The improved Phantom Hourglass run will only be made if:
Nintendo learns how to release DS capture devices for everyone or some intelligent friend of mine that knows electronic modifying (to make a homemade one like TSA's friend did)
DS Dictator
I've done segment 2 and as an idea I'll post 1 teaser of each Segment onto Youtube.
Now in Bob-omb Battlefield "Mario Wings to the Sky" the DS version has either:
* Altered the Cannon and Wing Mario mechanics or
* The coins are not placed too well to get all 5 quickly after 1 cannon blast.

Have any of you DS players managed to get 5 Coins quickly from the cannon blast?
I haven't tried that too much, but I know that I can get four coins in one shot by shooting low and make mario rise as fast as he can.
The one I miss is the fourth coin but I think it's maybe possible to get that one too, I shall test it sooner today.
DS Dictator
http://files.filefront.com/Mario+Wings+to+the+Sky+DS/;12919650;/fileinfo.html

There's a video I've made to show that it's basically impossible to get the 5 coins from 1 Cannon Blast.
The last thing I need now is a verifier who only knows the N64 version critising about this star for not getting the 5 Centre coins quickly.
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
So shoot for 1, 2, 3, and 5 then turn back for 4?
DS Dictator
Possibly.
OR
If I can somehow get coin 2 - 5 from the cannon blast then I would only need a basic jump before those other coins to get Coin number 1.
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
This is an 80 star run yes?
Mario wings to the Sky is faster than the other 70 stars?

Well Tick Tock Clock's "Timed jumps on moving Bars" is a good replacement. You don't need to be Wario to bash the black block. You can use Luigi's Timed RoflCopter flip when collecting the flower and land on the moving bar to jump again to go through the cage and get the star. Getting Mario Wings to the Sky star lets the Red Coin star to be finished even faster because the aid of cannons (notably the floating island coin).

Edit:
For my next segment I'm not going to do Mario Wings to the Sky for obvious reasons.
I'm going to do:
? Switch
Bob-omb battle field Red coins
Bowser 1 Switch Star
and the battle itself.

I know how to get the First & Cannon over Rainbow star of Rainbow Cruise very quickly which can be good replacements.

Yes but using the Eggs are more reliable to hit Goomboss. The last hit looked sloppy when getting the egg but he can only take damage when he moves and start chasing you.

(Sorry for double post)

I've completed Segment 9 which collects the Stars from Dire, Dire, Docks, Bowser 2 and some from Jolly Roger Bay.

I usually take notes of the high score coins of the courses I just did on the segment to see if I can try it again, and if I can't, I'll re-do it slowly (thanks to no In-game timers) collecting the right stars and high score coin counts to prevent verification errors (even though I'm not planning to get any 100 star coins).

Another cool thing I've found out is that:
You can actually defeat Bowser 2 without having to surive his first slam by quickly going underneath and do a side jump divegrab to his tail. This saves 6 seconds but it might not be likely to be seen on the SDA run because:
It's takes place after 3 minutes of speedrunning action (the boring Bowser sub star to the tough Fire Sea with the new Switch star on the route!)
and it's difficult to perform thanks to the D-pad Angry
3 minutes is still short enough that you should try to use that trick at the end, imo.

I forgot to update the post but I've re-done the segment with the trick now Smiley

Segment 10 is seriously nasty. I'm getting 5/7 tick tock Stars and the first Rainbow Cruise Star.
Goomba wearing the Luigi hat is a serious pain in the butt on Tick Tock Clock when it comes to killing it without mistakes.
I know a good shortcut on the switch star which makes the segment even harder.

Edit: Done segment 10 with only 7 seconds of "notable" error. It was from the last star which I know a shortcut which sometimes does or does not work. When you watch the segment you'll understand how much difficulty I went through.

60 stars collected in roughly 1 hour & 10 minutes.

Segment 11 is very lengthy, 20 stars (17 from courses & 3 Castle secrets) likely to be 1 hour 30 minutes then.

Segment 12 will be Mario vs Final Bowser finishing under 100 minutes.
destroy them with lazers
Do you think this is the kind of run you would like to to keep coming back to and improving or once its done its done. I only ask because of big interest people have with SM64 and its time consistently getting lower over the years. I watched your NSMB test segments and they were pretty sweet to. Keep up the good work with this run.

DS Dictator
If Nintendo releases a product to produce Direct DS recording on both screens, then yes there is a chance of me remaking the run. Since this one is played on a flat table which limits my playing skill a bit (not the usual handheld pose). Also this run was suprisenly harder to master than the N64 thanks to the D-Pad and a modified engine which makes small movement precision (like going underneath a box) frustrating. And you can't triple jump up slopes like the N64 version can do and of course a less buggy hit collsion dection.

I am planning to re-do some segments (Segment 5 which is the Boo fountain -> Big Boo Luigi Key, Segment 8: Secret Slide and Segment 3).

None of these segments will affect errors in the future segments like High score coins since:
Segments 5 & 8  are Castle Secret stars which will not track your high score in coins, and segment 3 will be the only segment to (start &) finish: Cool Cool Mountain and Whomps Fortress.
I've been looking to speed run SM64DS with 150 stars. I've made my own speed route, and to be honest, It's probably pretty slow. It is my first speed route I've ever came up with after all. I'd like to see what everyone thinks of it and I'm open to tips on how to improve my route. Without further ado, my speed route:

Hmm it's not bad but I know some better ideas.
The N64 version 120 star run was SS in 2:09:40.
The DS version has 150 stars (includes 30ish new stars and some tweaked stars too) and 4 Characters.

Yoshi is useful for: The first 8, Cool Cool Mountain Red Coins, Snowman's Land Ice Sculture and the rare silver rabbits that require insane luck making an SS run frustrating to do.

Mario is useful for: Opening the Big Star doors, his flower power to make some Rainbow Ride stars done quicker (Big house & Over the Rainbow without the cannon).

I'll mention about Luigi and Wario later but there are some obvious mistakes like this:

Quote:
Switch to Yoshi
Secret Star 140: Catch those White Rabbits
Rainbow Ride
Star 141: Cruiser Crossing the Rainbow
Star 142: The Big House in the Sky
Star 143: Coins Amassed in a Maze
Star 144: Swingin' in the Breeze
Star 145: Tricky Triangles
Star 146/147: 100 coins/Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Star 148: Switch Star of the Manor
Switch to Mario
Bowser in the Sky
Secret Star 149: Switch Star
Secret Star 150: 8 Red Coins

After getting the Silver Rabbit star you should switch to Mario right afterwards for 2 reasons.

*There is a good shortcut that requires a triple jump (Yoshi and Wario can't do it as their Triple jump isn't high enough) for

Star 141: Cruiser Crossing the Rainbow
Star 142: The Big House in the Sky
Star 147: Somewhere Over the Rainbow
and possibly Star 148: Switch Star of the Manor.

Also after you get star 148 you can go to Bowser 3 right away saving a good 20 seconds.

Quote:
Star 128 Switch Star of the Mountain
Switch to Mario
Secret Star 129: A Gift From Toad #3
Switch to Luigi
Tick Tock Clock
Star 130: Luigi in the Cage
Star 131: The Pendulum Switch Star
Star 132: Get a Hand
Star 133/134: 100 coins/ Stomp on the Thwomp
Star 135: Timed Jumps on Moving Bars
Star 136: Stop Time for Red Coins
Star 137: Tick Tock Silver Stars

Why do you switch Luigi to Mario -> Toad Star -> Switch to Luigi again? Luigi can get all 3 Toad Stars. Also Mario is faster on nearly all of the Tick Tock Stars, sure it may require a Luigi hat on both:
Luigi in the cage and
Timed Jumps on Moving Bars but it's near the Red ? Box and Mario can Wall Jump to high floors quicker than Luigi.

Last idea for now:

Quote:
Unlock Mario
Switch to Mario
Secret Star15: The Secret Aquarium
Jolly Rodger Bay
Star16: Plunder in the Sunken Ship
Star17: Can the Eel Come Out to Play?
Star18/19: 100 coins/Treasure in the Ocean Cave
Star 20: Blast to the Stone Pillar
Star21: Red Coins on the Ship Afloat

Luigi is faster on these set of stars because he is the Fastest Swimmer of the 4 characters, so skip those stars and let Luigi do those when you unlock him.

When my run gets submitted to SDA and gets accepted and published, I suggest you to watch it see how I get 80 stars quickly.

At least I'm proud that there is an 150 star route on the works.
