I'm not an expert, but my initial guess would be the more annoying/difficult bosses, and the final levels. CG is a pain in the ass no matter what, and so is Eggman 2. those would probably be the most important improvements overall.

Paragod, maybe you can try these boss strategies:

Shadow 1 - Stay close and run around him until you can hit with a homing attack from behind.  If he attempts an attack first, dodge it and homing attack him from behind after he lands.  I usually finish in under 20 here.

Eggman 2 - Try not to stray too far away from him so you can finish him quickly.  To avoid the high-damage laser: after the camera zooms in on Eggman, try standing still.  He should fire a volkan shot before firing the big laser; if the volkan shot hits you, then you'll still be flashing from the hit when he fires his laser, and you can walk out of the laser before you stop flashing.
EDIT: It looks like this might not work - I tried a Dark story run just now, and I died twice against Tails.  Couldn't even steer clear of the laser at all...

Shadow 2 - You can outrun his Chaos Spear while running normally.  Just stop and let him get ahead, then before he uses Chaos Spear, do a homing attack to gain speed, outrun his Chaos Spear, and attack him.  Practice the timing a bit, and you can finish in under 40 pretty easily.

I wish I could give some hints for King Boom Boo and Egg Golem.  For King Boom Boo, I'm not sure why Knuckles occasionally turns around and stops after landing a hit.  And I'm quite inconsistent at the Egg Golem fight myself.

Looks like your Rouge fight could've been better as well, but I guess you already know the strategy.
Currently needing ideas on games to speedrun
The Egg Golem fight is fairly easy. Just keep running him in circles, as soon as he attacks you can start heading up the slabs in his back. When he slams his head into the ground you might be able to jump up while his back is still arched, I always just wait it out but it would save a few seconds if you could go right away. I'm going to go replay the levels and see if I can get some faster times on some of the harder levels at the end.

((How on earth did you get Meteor Herd so fast? I got 6 minutes =*( ))

Are you doing this in level-segments?

Because if you are you can just abuse your luck in the Knuckles levels, I just did a run and got 0:48 on Pumpkin hill because I ran across an emerald on accident while en route to the another one.

I knew the boss strategies except for shadow 2, what I do now is get the first 3 hits by homing attacks, then charge a spindash until shadow is about to launch his spear, once he says his line I fly forwards hoping to hit him with a homing attack before he does the attack(On the 4th hit it's important, because I die 90% of the time if he hits me because I get knocked off) the 5th hit it doesn't matter, because you can die and still win. I usually kill him in under a minute, sometimes under 50 seconds, but I had really bad play during the completed run.

I do plan to do this single segment, I think sub 50 would be a good target, because my 52 had really good luck in the hunting levels but for the most part really bad boss fights, so I think it would even out to be able to get under 50 minutes.

I have a demo below of the first 5 levels for those who are interested as an example of  how the real run should turn out.(Failed run, Badluck on Aqautic mine)
City escape went very well, Green forest and the bosses were good, with everything else being average except wild canyon which was pretty bad. (Prison lane COULD of been great, but I missed the hidden enemy in the second to last room 4 times for some reason)

Marvelous, I've been wanting to see Green Forest for awhile now. I'll edit this after I've watched it.
Angered Me, You have!
X9, that was a smashing performance! 8) And how dare they give you a B rank when you were megafast at the first stage?! Really look forward to your final completed run.

I think I'll post my updates from http://speeddemosarchive.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=consoles_newer;action=display;num=1118552691 in here from now on.. it's a far more fitting title.

yeah, the other topic really is misleading, and old and needs to die since no one is insane enough to do all 180 emblems single segment, and probably wouldn't be very interesting anyway.

btw plenty of people will watch the run, as long as you don't get impatient and rush it like I probably would have done.

Also nice times you got there, if you think there is room for improvements I would say give it a few more shots.

I tried a couple more practice runs yesterday, but most died early on. :x I guess I'll need to get consistent on these levels!

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Playing around some more today, I realize paragod owns me early on int he run. I can speedrun the beginning for beans compared to him :x. I can do bosses, hunting levels, and levels near the end better, but none  t the beginning. =/And people care mostly about seeing fast ce1s and metal harbors.. not 1:39 and 2:10 mha1 and ce1 :x.

----

I'll just do a full run, mistakes and all, and keep track of it. Hopefully it comes out sub 50!

CE: 2:07- =/. It's against the laws of physics for someone who's not paragod to do this level fast. insane. I screwed up tons in the truck chase,... probably one of the worst chases I've ever had. I can get maybe 2:00 if I'm perfect.

BigFoot: 1:11 - Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. I need to improve this. Big trouble spot

WC: 1:09  - Horrible last piece. This level is early in the run, and I can pretty consistently sub 50, but it didn't happen this practice run.

1st Eggman: 14 - wheee.. simple boss

PL: 1:53 - A couple mistakes here and there.. nothing too costly. Not having hover kills some shortcuts though :x.

MH: 1:39  - I died =/. multiple times. this is just a practice, though, so it's ok. :x I will forever skip a shortcut up the rocket ascension due to it being an easy killer.. other than that the run was decently smooth, I'm just slow. Deaths hurt. Sad Good thing this is just a practice, but I hate it :x.

1st Shadow: 12.87  -  simpleeeee.

GF: 1:45  - err. it's hard to keep yourself from bouncing on this level, but fortunately I only bounced once. woo! I turned that bounce into a shortcut of sorts, as well.

PH: 2:50  - Getting all the pieces here is guesswork.. I don't use hints. I probably should, though. This was a horrible run, I normally do way better. Firt piece took 1 and a half minutes. eek.

MSTR: 2:40.99  - The weight elevator shortcut is make or break for the run. this time, it broke. =/. This is another part of the run that needs practice practice practice. Does anyone know an easy way to get the weight shortcut? The way I do it, there is a very short window of opportunity in which you can get atop the weight :x.the run was wonderful aside from that. So basically.. practice the weight. Sad

AM:  3:55 - I HATE HUNTING STAGES. I have had the poorest hunting stages this entire run! :(:( I hate it! hate it! I noramlly do no worse than 1:30... the stages this time around are killer. This run is sour. Maybe I'm not capable of doing a good run.. =/

r101: 2:26  - this was so bad. =/. Crashed, poorly used boosts, hit cars.. horrible. Sad this run is just bad.

HB:  2:05 - Ok, I died here at the beginning. I am used to having damage kill off more than one dynamite pack at a time.. but that doesn't happen here because I don't ahve the upgrade. So I died by accident.. I just need to remember to shoot every pack. Poorly optimized run, just needs practice so I remember to shoot every pack.

PC: 2:47  - SO I missed a rail and wasted probably 20 seconds.. oh man. I'm really doubting my abilities here. this run is just bad. bad. Sad Got grabbed by a ghost as well.  Died attempting a shortcut that I never die at.. it was bad. I don't think I can do this.

DC: 4:49  - All my hunting levels have had poor piece layouts. My friend, DC was no exception. enough said. hate this level. grr.

KBB: 2:55 - I alwYs quad hit. And this time, I got 2 -1-1 Blech. this run gets worse and worse. Sad

egg golem: 1:07.75  - Intentional deaths here.. restarting egg golem twice makes his boss time so much better as he is slower to start and you can get the first hit in way faster. Egg golem's hits are not luck based.. they follow a pattern if you do everything right, which for once in this stupid practice run, I did.

EE: 3:13.37  - wooh it says 1337! regardless, it was actually a nice run. Mistakes here and there, but I'm firly consistent at doing this level quickly.

MHe: 3:11  -  The only hunting stage I've had with decent layout (I just relaly poorly executed..)

Rouge:  24  - Just eh.

CG1: 2:05.75  - Mistakes were scattered but not major.. the highlight of the run, for sure.

2nd Eggy: 15 - OMAN. MY PR BY FAR. amazing run. I love it. I will never forget this strategy. woo.

FR: 2:44 - ah, poor end. 3 deaths at the beginning.. whatever. Sad this level is mean to me recently..guess itneeds major practice too :K Once I got into my groove, though, the run was decent. the great thing about this level is I can practice it with all upgrades and it won't make a difference :D.

2nd Shadow:  46 - err, tons of screwups. this is hard to practice though.. and a 46 is acceptable in a real speedrun for me.

I can't believe I kept going through this whole run.. it really is a motivation killer. The run overall was really terrible.. until the end. I did great at egg golem, ee, cg, and eggman 2, and that makes me really happy. i have the opposite problem of paragod.. I suck at the beginning of the run. Oh well! poor hunting plus dumb mistakes+death.. eek. whatever. I'm practicing for a reason.
hai yah
I refuse to believe that you can get something as awesome as 12.87 on shadow, yet at the same time only have 1:11 on bigfoot?! i'm lucky as hell to get 20 seconds on shadow.

whatever, you better start getting 25-26 seconds right now or your gunna drive me crazy wondering how you can kill the harder bosses so fast and easily yet you can't do a damn thing on the easiest ones Tongue

jump on crate, wait, jump+homing attack,  repeat. easy 25.99 seconds(or 26.01, like it really makes a difference)

All I can say about the weight drop thing on mission street is to take it slowly, don't rush as if you were just time attacking the level single segment, do it as fast as you can  while keeping 100% consistency.

Yeah, for bigfoot, I get the first hit in like I do in hot shot (hot shot vid: ), but on hit 2 one of two things happens

a) I hit bigfoot's feet, not his cockpit.
b) he destroys the crate

So I can never quickly gets those hits in.

Shadow is easy, also. you get behind him. when he's not facing you and he get's homing attacked, he gets hurt.

Anyway, how poor was the rest of the run. My ce1 is a good 15 seconds behind yours, mha1 I died on... gf1 is ~the same as yours. PL I can do fast.. hunting stages were disgusting. I don't think it was entirely my fault for the hunting problems though.. I got really bad layouts.

regardless, plenty of areas on this run need practice before I even consider making this run happen.

also, we realized the death abuse in egg golem really isn't worth it. It saves very little time if any and gives that bad label :(.

Well, as long as this is getting worked on, I think I'll start up my Dark Story run again.

But first, some questions.  How many deaths would you consider acceptable?  Also, in Sand Ocean, there's a way to get a faster time in the level by killing yourself to reset the platforms (saves about 5 seconds).  Should I use that or go deathless?

Sand ocean is probably the reason I don't want to do a dark story run. Really. having no hover really hurts :x.

Regardless, I think 0 deaths is what should be aimed for. I think any death, unless it saves major time, should not be in the run.this 5 second shortcut really depends on the case.. could you describe it? Where is it? How does it work?

EDIT: Just did a first try SO speedrun without hover or warp.. got a 2:46.52. What are you getting on your runs? if it's substantially better than 2:46, excellent job!

Also, paragod, your bigfoot strategy is far easier to execute.. first try got a 25. Dunno why I insisted on making a second hot shot; The mechanics for the two bosses are way different.

After some practice of timing, got a 24.99. I don't want a perfect time in the speedrun though.. 25 or 26 works.
Using deaths will obviously get you into the death abuse catagory. So use as many deaths as needed to help save time if necesary.

No deaths would be an ordinary speedrun.

2:34 is the best I can get without dying, 2:39 if I decide not to use a ridiculously difficult trick near the end.  I can actually get sub 2:30 with dying, although it's incredibly difficult.  It looks awesome, though.

The trick is to die after the second checkpoint.  It resets the platforms and puts the last spinner in a more desirable place.

Since this is the only place I know of where dying saves time, and it's only 5 seconds, I'll skip it.  Without it, I have a near 100% success rate with Sand Ocean, although the last part looks a little...meh.
Are you considering the fact that, if you do abuse death, you'll have to count the time from the checkpoint 'till the screen turn black and add it to your time, right?

Asking random stuff that comes through my mind right now.

Nice that you got so down so far.. I really despise that level without hover. For speedruns at least.

I'm also curious what paragod did so well on his p[rison lane. He failed major at the end of it and still got 1:53.. he would have had a 1:48 had he done it right. I think I'm gonna try this.

hmmm... seems I lsoe my forward momentum a lot... I just pulled off a 1:50 but it's not something I'll get often.

Anything worse than a no-death run is unacceptable imo, with the only "death" being on crazy gadget which is only partial anyway since you don't ever actually die.

I lose forward momentum all the time, which is the main reason I suck in general at walker levels, I think the best way to cut a sharp corner(which there are tons of in prison lane) is to just jump like I did.

also i'm kinda in the mood to do a SA2 hero story run again, with ya'll doing newgame run and all should I do a run with powerups? I could probably make a better powerups run than had I done a newgame run anyway, because i'm used to playing with them rather than without them.

I figure these are good targets

Sonic/Tails Targets:

CE: 1:42-1:45 (I always get really bad luck at the truck anymore or i'd go for 1:42 everytime)

Mharbor- 1:25

Gforest- 1:43(Like everyone else, bouncing is a big problem here which makes it hard to get consistant low times)

PCave- 2:10

CGadget- 1:52

Frush 2:35-2:40 (Just to be safe, there's alot of shortcuts that are easy to die on so i'll play it safe and take them slowly)
_

Prison lane- 1:50 (As I said before I suck at all the shortcuts hovering provides)

Mission street- 2:15 Haven't played this stage much, but my best time is around 2:15 and it didn't take any effort so  I should be able to recreate that in a speedrun easily.

R101- 2:20-2:22

Hidden base- 2:00- This stage is alot faster with powerups than without, and this is one of my better walker stages so it should be a easy target.

Eternal Engine- 3:20? I only time attacked this level once ever with powerups, so i'll have to practice it and see how it goes, as it is now i'd end up with 5+ minutes Tongue

How does that sound?

since I can't goto tsc anymore I just wanted to say to you stefan that your advice you gave me in the 06 awards topic really helped, acting like an idiot on tsc was step 1, i just went insane to the point where i realized that people aren't gunna judge you badly unless you act like a total idiot like I did and even if they do you gotta just overcome it and try to improve yourself.I know this sounds stupid and confusing but if you think about it it makes sense, but I just wanted to thank you for that indefinitely helpful advice, it should overall help me in life in general because I go through the same stuff there and until now I just couldn't see any hope.

there's no way I could ever go back to TSC again after i made such a big deal about leaving and all but that's okay, atleast such a situation will never happen again in the future Smiley thanks again man, it's a shame that we could never be friends or anything like that because when I get to know someone and get over that nervousness i'm completely different, fun cool style but meh.  I know this message is totally suited for a PM but PM's don't work so nyah to anyone that wants to lecture me.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Erm, why can't you go back to TSC? I still don't think anyone really dislikes you at all. They may think you're overdramatic, but not necessarily a bad person.

You're welcome for the advice, though. Didn't realize it was such big advice. Anyway, hopefully you'll remember that and use it.

Anyway, I think you should try and give TSC one more shot. Just don't think negatively of yourself this time. If you do feel someone dislikes you, just realize life always has antagonists. Nobody is ever 100% liked. So just get over it. Try giving TSC one more shot, but this time don't feel hated or whtnot, because chances are you really aren't.
