This would be instantly submitted if I didn't die -twice- on Launch Base 1, the easiest level in the game! Sad

I think I'd submit anything within 15 seconds of this, depending on where and how bad my mistakes were. The two big variables in the run time are Ice Cap and Lava Reef 2, the former usually goes about ten seconds better, and there's a ton of room for improvement on the latter but it's all dependent on hitting the very precise double-spindash.

On the other hand, the remaining levels were all pretty much perfectly to plan. I've never had a run through the game where I haven't made at least a five-second mistake somewhere. It's such a shame I can't submit this run Sad

I hit Lava Reef 2 in two attempts. Holy shit did that just happen?

This run wasn't overall quite as flawless as the last one, I botched Launch Base 1 pretty bad (the stupid bird knocked me the wrong way) but I went to my backup plan for that, and in my excitement over LR2 I screwed up the screen wrap on Sky Sanctuary twice, jumping too early. On the other hand, the Death Egg 1 boss has some of the most amazing luck you ever did see.

I'm going to encode and submit this run tonight.
Congrats mike :3
Awesome job mike!  Sounds like an incredible run, can't wait to see it!
Make it so.
Boom! Shotgun the verification on this baby, can't wait to see it!
Twinkle-Twinkle Lil' Star, har har!
Along with the others, congratulations on this improvement, Mike! I cannot wait to see it, as I'm sure it will be very well executed and look awesome! All luck to you.

This run is now available on Youtube:

The audio was captured really, really badly... that's in the source video and there's nothing I can do about that. It's also slightly out of sync, which is something I can fix, and probably will later.

Balls jerky
Oh Icecap. How broken art thou?

I mean... scratch that. Let's be honest. The whole fucking game.
Make it so.
Marble Garden remains the ridiculous one for me. If I could nail that and Ice Cap even semi regularly I could begin serious recording attempts.

Amazing job as usual Mike!
~_~
...and if you think he broke THAT level:
Jump, Gypsy, Jump!
Does he always take that long to explode? Jeebus...
THIS RUN CONTAINS SECRET WORLDS
I really should watch this thread more. Mike89's run is nothing short of amazing. The quality of play is extraordinary enough to almost ignore the horrid sound quality.

I've just started to try and run this game and during a race on srl I found some strange glitch I've never seen before. I don't even know what triggered as I pretty much took the natural route.

So yea, don't laugh at my "SkIlLz" but I'm not shure where to upload glitches like this so just tell me if this is not the place.

Anyway, here's the video of me playing Sonic 3 (without knuckles). I don't even know where I triggered the glitch so I just uploaded the whole 3-4 minutes

Skip HCA2 Boss (and lock up your game) played on Sonic Mega Collection PAL 60Hz:

Yeah, it's a glitch that only happens in Sonic 3 alone, and not in S3&K.  Apparently, it happens if you go too fast from the Knuckles cutscene to the boss area.  It's in ORKAL's Hydrocity glitch video as well.

I remember playing Sonic 3 alone on Mega Collection, and I thought my game wouldn't let me pass Hydrocity anymore since this glitch kept happening to me. Tongue  My strategy was to charge a spindash on the bridge before it collapsed, and then let the spindash go as I landed... that got me the glitch every time.
Yeah that is a fairly old glitch, but more importantly, race me in sonic 3 at srl! >:o

I guess I knew somewhere in the back of my head that it had to be old, but it's always fun sharing and what better place than here? Anyway, I'll continue practising and post if I find something interesting I guess :p.

And wersterlobe, I'm up for a race, just find me on the irc or add me on skype :). I need friends to help me with some glitches so I don't completely fill this place up with my questions :p.
Make it so.
So I had a few friends round today who wanted to see a speedrun in action, somehow I got marathon luck by proxy even though I'm not at SGDQ and I had the most insane run of the s3 part of s3k:

AI: .54/1.34
HC: 1.01/.34 (+7)
MG: 1.40/.3 (easily the worst, I still can't do this regularly anyway)
CN: .56/2:34
IC: 1.20/0
LB: .47/.46 (yup, first try zip in 2)

So yeah, 12:08 with Sonic alone. Pity I dont have a recording device. Not that this is an accepted category but hey, pretty happy nonetheless!
Not an accepted category? You mean completing sonic 3 in s3&k right?

Also, find a way to record because I want to see sonic alone runs!

Strive for Greatness
is anyone interested in a Competition Mode run? I'd personally do it if there was a category for it. There are 5 levels, with each you need to go through 5 laps, made specifically for 2player mode, but you can run through it by yourself.

EDIT: Tiberius, do you not use the zip in CN2-Sonic?
lllllooooolllll. That zip saves like over a minute, gotta go in.

Also Strong Bad, S3 Competition would have to be a really high standards too, since everything is so short.

Make it so.
The one with clipping through the barrel? If someone can give me a way of doing it so that it works more than 10% of the time (and the other 90% causes an instant run-over) I'd love to put it in, CN2 sucks.
Oh wow I wasn't even thinking that one. Oh yeah, barrel clip is ez peaz champ, honestly. Just go up/down twice and start mashing A against the right side of the wall when the barrel is at its lowest point and go in.

I was refering to the second zip which you obviously arent doing either, the bubble clip. You can totally learn it if you want, as a warning though I'll spell out what you need.

6 tap spindash (must be 6) into frame perfect jump into frame perfect hold into frame perfect bubble bop all within a second. Not to mention half the time you'll then be trapped, probably sub-pixels at work. I;ve hit it once, ever, and it's one of the few things I'll freely admit was a fluke.

CN2-Sonic Barrel Zip:
Spindash onto the barrel (you should be on the left side), then do a quick double tap of a jump button, then hold down. Then when you rotate to the right, press A a couple times. When you're in the wall, hold left so you zip right. Skips like 40 seconds if you're optimal in both routes. Here's a video I recorded a couple years ago:

Obviously in an SDA run you'd skip the bonus stage. I do it here to round off any partialness of a second as well as be fully stopped for a spindash.

and screw the later zip. just, don't even try. I tried for like a month. you suck werster Sad

werster: I'm well aware that it'd need to be pretty good, heh.
Make it so.

I can do that much no problems whatsoever, it's just that when I'm in the wall, most of the time it just sends me down to a little "room" within the wall without zipping me at all and there's no way out, is that just me messing up the timing?

That other zips sounds utterly hilarious, definitely SS material right there.
