Actually, I found that rather easy to understand. He said:

1) I didn't know how to do that in GENS (assuming that's the emulator's name)

2) How can you be sure the run was done on a console?

1) It's certainly possible in GENS.  Check out Bisqwit's site...there's a ton of Genesis runs.

2) You will ALWAYS be found out in the end.  Never EVER try to fool StrangenessDSS.  Hell hath no fury like a emulated run passed off as real to a woman.
You got a deletion wish?

Dude, that's cold.
Let's fight to computer!
Just so we're clear, though, it's perfectly OK to practice your run on an emulator; probably half the people here do. Only the final recorded product must be done on a real console.
Rock on, Earthbound. Rock on.
I used level maps taken from an emulator program to plan my route routes, does that count?  XD
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
K, No Emulator it is Tongue

I do have a PAL System though as I live in Aus,

wonder if that'll be a problem
SEGA Junkie
Not likely to be a problem, as Radix timed Sonic 2 by the sum of the individual level times - this is unaffected by PAL being slower, the clock runs slower too.
will still have to be a separate category due to the change in difficulty from it running slower.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Fair enough... maybe i could find an NTSC system on the net somewhere
i can send you one if you'd like.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
First off I want someone else to do the run, so I know what time I am aiming for, and to have a rough Idea of what would be the easiest way through levels and to kill bosses etc...
SEGA Junkie
How about I do a run, then you try and beat it?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

If my latest attempt is any guide, you won't have too much trouble.

I was practicing on Gens+ just now and pulled the following times: (playing as Knuckles)

AI1: 58
AI2: 1:15
HC1: 1:40
HC2: 2:52 (:X)
MG1: 1:40
MG2: death

I killed the run off there - the boss fight was horrible anyways.

Don't worry, I promise I'll be much better before I start the real thing. =P
Forward standard-by-ten .
I'm in awe of Nate's dedication.
Speed Running Joy-bringer
Small Question.....

I remember seing it lots of times, jumping at one point during a loop and coming down the other side with tremendous speed. But It does not seem to work for me. It just resets my speed when I land on the part of the loop. Any reason why this happens? Perhaps a version of the game that was fixed or something?

That boss is a pain in the ass as Knuckles.

As for the rest of the times, I really have no idea.  I really suck at this game, especially playing as Knuckles.
I contemplated doing a run with Knux awhile back. Then I relized he plays to slow and the run would probably be boring.

Knuckles is anything but slow. Most of the courses in Sonic 3 can be beaten faster with Knux than with Sonic.
All in all, Sonic 3 and Knuckles can be completed more than 10 minutes faster than Sonic
Oh. Well I'm still not gonna do it. Seems like everytime I attempt a Sonic run, someone points me to a place where my times are beat by like 30-40 seconds. Kinda annoying.
Rock on, Earthbound. Rock on.

That's a trick used by TASers.  As far as I understand it, there's a few frames where you can jump parallel to the loop so that you hit the bottom slope perfectly at a steep angle that the game sees as being close enough to your jump trajectory that when you hit it, you're not hitting the slope perpendicular, but at a more or less parallel angle which makes the ground absorb none of your speed, and the thrust of your jump makes up for speed lost from impact with the ground.

It's tricky, and most likely unfeasible for a human player.

You do know that you can stand on the top of the large water funnel right after Robotnik/Egg Robo stops his/its propeller, giving you enough time for up to two easy hits?

Of course, for a speedrun, you'll need to bounce off of a mine explosion and repeatedly bounce off the top of Egg Robo.  I've managed up to four consecutive hits before, so the five or six required for a speedrun (two/three hits beforehand off of the water funnel) is reasonable.

Actually, Sprint managed to get eight hits on the boss before the funnel even lowered by jumping onto it, dodging the fan, and bouncing for eight.

Of course, I can't do that, I can only get two that way. But I'm working on it, along with everything else.

Another attempt today:

AI1: 55
AI2: 1:00
HC1: 1:21
HC2: 2:31
MG1: 1:30
MG2: death

HC2 was still awful, but not as much so this time.

These sort of times are more like what you can expect to see from me (I matched or beat four of my target times, missing only HC2).

And another thing:

HeroPenguin: "Loop-jumping" is just a variation on the ramp jump which is used to gain height or speed. (In this case, speed.) It's actually quite easy to pull off, jump from the top-left corner of the loop into the bottom left (assuming you're running left-to-right) and you go flying off at high speeds.
very cool.

keep it up.
Rock on, Earthbound. Rock on.

Ah, see I thought the frame window was much smaller.  Truth be told, I hadn't practiced it much myself.  Looks like that's something to consider.
