As Tompa linked to, and as it says in my signature, I'm planning a co-op run through the game, as well as a Sonic solo and a Knuckles solo run. I need to get some friends birthday presents, but if I have money left over afterwards, I'll go ahead and grab the game and start to work on the solo stages.
I haven't heard anything about Mike's attempts or anyone else starting up, however. Can we get a roll call in here?
It's an exciting game to speed run true. The awesome thing is that 4 people could run it at once and not conflict due to the awesomeness of 4 character choices(assuming Sonic+Tails is sufficiently different from Tails alone, which he should be just for using Flight to skip a large portion of Sky Sanctuary).
Are we going to add up the total time from beginning to end (with cutscenes, bonus stages etc....)
Or will it just be the total combination of all the level's times?
I think if it was just a combination of all the level's times then people would want to take time to do bonus stages and acquire all the emeralds therefore making the rest of the run easier..

Time would be for each level added up since a timer is shown. Collecting all of the emeralds would be considered 100%.
But having all the emeralds would make the game much easier later on with super sonic/knuckles/tales... So would a 100% be done in shorter time than just speed running
First, I doubt it would be faster with the time it takes to reach the giant rings and collecting 50 rings to use super power each level you can. Second, the emerald stage times would be added too. The SADX run includes Adventure Field times, as well as the in-game clock for stages.
I personally would time using the level times for each level on a deathless, pure speed run. any other time would have to be manually timed, since deaths aren't counted in the level timers and special stages don't HAVE timers.
And yes, I'm the one doing the co-op, Sonic, and Knux runs. Mike was planning a Tails room when I heard last, but apparently he's out until Easter. I'm out until I can get a copy of the game, and my co-op run *can't* be done before summer, most likely.
Level times plus special stage times for a 100%. It's the only way.
This is why I was planning to use neither special or bonus stages.
A couple more things:
Trihex: I'm out because school is "more important". It's in quotation marks because it's not my words, it's my parents'. :x
Amazing Ampharos: Flying through most of Sky Sanctuary with Tails will get you a time of about 1:12 at best. Sprint found a method lately to get an incredible 0:35! (The best known time with Sonic is 0:42, using the same method.)
I didn't nessecarily say flying through all but just flying to skip stuff as the stage does zigzag up. But yeah, 2D flying is slow so it might be nice if there's more trickery besides going up instead of on the beaten path.
Is it a sin to use an emulator? I mean I have an old console in my shed with an old sega master system controller but that's still shoddy. I think if you guys don't like emulators being used then I'll have to invest in finding a controller or making my own Unless you guys have some good website to point me to

It's forbidden. You better start hunting around for a controller.
You mean besides the fact that you can slow down the game and save and load instantly at any time, and then produce a video which looks like it was played normally?
