Ever heard of Bowser's SHFFLC'd FA?  How about the wave-dash?  Dashdancing?  Crouch cancels?  Shield grabbing?  If any one of those last four didn't make sense to you, you're not in reach of beating a tournament player.

*Cries*

I don't get any of that. I just use Link. All the time. I used to be an expert with him in SSB, but when Melee came out I just lost my touch. And also, you guys say that vs. level 9s isn't practise? Do team battle against 3 level 9s with max handicap on them all. THEN come back and say that again. I used to be able to do this easy on the 64 version as Link against any 3 characters. But on Melee, I find it quite harder for some reason.

AKA, upload your vid, I want to see how good you are. I know that if there were tournaments for this game here on SDA, anyone who plays me would beat me too fast. Think of it, "Link versus...wait, the match is already over? This game's winner is [insert character I'm not using here]!"

I don't know, I may upload it tommorow. I'll probally recieve elitist comments without me being able to base any arguments on anyone else's standard of play. All I'll say is one I get 2 kiils up on a points match I usually get dirty by running away and commiting suicide when I reach 100%, for entertainment sake I didn't do that in the video, but no way does it demonstrate any true skill playing a manipulatable level 9 oponent. I was going to play 3 comps, but ther was too much carnage and a drop in speed.

Missilewaster:  Here are some very good top tier players duking it out.  These video's show some of those techniques in action.  The most important being the shffl(short hop fast fall L cancel) because of it's speed and power.  My favorite is the Azen(Mewtwo) vs Chu(Samus) video.  It just goes to show even with top tier players using top tier characters(Samus is known to be high tier and Mewtwo to be one of the worst), slight differences in skill means everything.  The music is awesome too.

Anyone know where to download that video of Wes destroying a person after a taunt?  I have it but I forgot where I downloaded it.  They both look like expert players, but knowing the techniques and knowing when and how to use them are two completely different things, as Wes demonstrates by royally kicking his ass.

Hahahahahaha, yeah right. There's no way those kind of people would make up anywhere near a majority - they're called elites for a reason - plus stage selection voting is a huge possibility.

I can guarantee you that all skilled Smash Bros players who play at tournaments are not going to let you stand still for 5 seconds to charge up an attack that they could negate by shielding. If you use the charge B attack in a serious fight then you'll just get hit from behind while charging.

Eh, it can be useful as an edge guarding technique, but it's very situational even in that case. My personal best characters are Dr. Mario, Samus, and G-Dorf, but I make no claims about being good at the game. I haven't actually played in any tournaments or anything. And unfortunately, the only good player I know to compete against is my brother. It will be nice to be able to compete against humans anytime I want with online play.

At the same time, I'm kinda apprehensive about it.  "Oh boy, I get to venture into the vast world of no items, Final Destinations, and high-tier thumping competitive players.  Joy."  We'll see how it goes.

Well, I think it all depends on how the online mode works. If it's like MK: DS where everyone votes on the stage and item settings before each match, it could go either way just depending on whether the people you're randomly pitted against are "hardcore" or not. But it might use a more traditional system where you can either create a game or join a game that's been created, in which case you could always be assured a match with the settings you like.

Have you played online games?  50% of the population consists of people spending all their time playing it(it's 50% because they're on all the time).  Unless you chose to spend a hefty fraction of your life just to get decent at the game, you won't stand a chance.  And of course people love to gloat when they win so it'll be a lot less fun.

But having a tournament with people here on SDA will be fun, even if I get my ass handed to me.
I don't like items.  There is enough randomness with the stage that gets selected, who you face, what techniques they use, stage hazards, you don't need another thing out of your control.
Well, damnit. Now I really want to play Strangeness, HeroPeguin and Darkwasabi (ps: I posted that page earlier, if not, in the Nintendo press conference thread)

MissleWaster, doing something hard is not considered proper training. Fighting 3 level 9 Captain Falcons with a 9 to 1 handicap is hard, but training? Hell no. Here's a short list as to why:

1- AI is crap compared to human intelligence
2- Level settings only control how much time the CPU lets between it's attack (example: A level 1 CPU would walk in front of you, wait 5 seconds, attack, jump towards you, wait s'more).
3- AI has NO IDEA of many, many techniques humans have discovered
4- In a 3vs1 match, you have to be more defensive than anything. In a 1vs1 match, defence is toned down hugely. Also, in any real tournament (and most matches period), you will NOT fight a 3vs1 match.
5- Handicaps just adjust how far the character flies with a certain amount of damage. This also forces you to be more defensive.

Poo. Now I've spent around 5 minutes for someone who should've understood this a while ago.

As for the stages: I doubt it'll be Final Destination only, but letting every single stage probably will create some disputes. Although I'm somewhat against stage/character interaction for the sake of serious matches (though they should still exist just to mess around with them), Corneria is still one of my favorite stages in SSBM.
Rock on, Earthbound. Rock on.

Sorry if I got your hopes up, Hitaro.  I know OF the techniques, but I can't wavedash to save my life, I only have a cursory skill in shfflc-ing, I don't truly understand dashdancing, and crouch cancels and shield grabbing, though easy in theory are things that are FAR outside my first instincts in the game.  I also forgot about the ledge grab technique involving letting go of the ledge and airjumping immediately back towards it in order to be able to use your normal jump attacks rather than the generally worse recovery techniques...  I don't even know what that  technique is generally called, if it has a name.

I may or may not have mentioned this already, but I only know two other people readily available to practice against.  One of them is much better than I am, and the other is much worse.  I'm up for the idea of an SDA tournament, but I'll make no promises of skill.  I'm no tourney player.

I can wavedash, but I pretty much can't use it in a match (unless I'm playing with Luigi; Wavedashing is MUCH better that his crappy Luigi-physics enduced walking). And isn't Shield Grabbing just pressing A when having the shield up? Or am I missing something?

Play with the better one. That's what I do; I probably have around 5 opponents I know I can play against, but only my brother actually beats me (very frequently, with a 2 stock advantage).

Not being a tourney player shouldn't not not be a problem. I have NEVER been to any tournament (mostly 'cause I'm a minor and I have no freakin' clue where the closest tournament is (I think it's somewhere in Maine or Quebec...))

You're not missing anything.  Shield grabbing is just the old-fashioned L/R+A grab instead of using Z.  the advantage is a slightly longer reach and the fact that it's generally safer over a slight loss in damage.

I know I should be playing with the better one, but on the other hand...  meh.  I have no excuse, I just don't really have the drive, either.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

Whats all this using of the word "if"? And so what if most of us here suck. At least "if" we have the tourney, we can all be comfortable with the fact that we're all on the same level.

BTW, I'm working on the rules for this (I have about 9-12 months to do so apparently), and I'll post them alittle closer to when the game comes out. As well as the invitational (More on that later down the road.)

And don't worry, big events like this are usually mentioned months in advance anyway.

I hope they will enable a way for you to watch matches too.  I also like the idea of an all out melee.  Just because it's a tournament doesn't mean it has to be serious.  There's no prize or anything, so it should be a fun tournament.
Well, if we do this the way tournaments are set up right now (no items, and banned stages out), it'll only take me a couple of weeks to get my fox's infinite shine down again, and another week to master purin again.

First off, I never said the word training in my post. Yeah.

1. Apparently you don't know me and my friends.
2. And? Humans could pull off massive combos in a row, higher leveled AI could do that too.
3. Neither do most humans.
4. Then don't be on the defensive. No matter what the odds are, I never go defensive (it isn't in my nature to do so) and I don't lose. Well, not very often.
5. See 4. Just don't get all defensive. If you can have crap for handicap, that will help you to get away from your opponents.

And also, you never had to post that. Just needed to say something about that last comment.

I think it's a bit early to try to organize this when we still know so little about the game. For instance, we don't know if the online mode will allow items to be disabled or not, or how the stage selection will work. We don't know how many players will be able to compete at once or if the games will be limited to stock or time battles. Heck, we don't even know that all of the characters from SSBM will be returning. It seems likely, although I wouldn't be surprised if the clones were made more unique (sort of like how Luigi was changed from SSB to SSBM).

Training and practicing are basically the same thing. Being picky about words is just plain dumb (unless you're joking, then it's okay to pick on words).

1- Are you saying that you and your friends are idiots? Or are you saying that you and your friends are not human by nature? ;/
2- Attack speed does not equal comboing abbilities. And AI doesn't know anything near what humans have discovered (*cough*combos over 10 hits*cough*)
3- By humans I mean human kind, as in everything humans have discovered, no matter who. Not only that, but us humans have incredibly easy access to that information via the internet.
4- Record and send a vid then. By what you're saying, I think it's complete BS, really. And you don't seem to care about the fact that in a 3vs1 match, you have much less liberty than in a 1vs1 match...
5- " If you can have crap for handicap, that will help you to get away from your opponents." What the hell does THAT mean?

Oh, and I posted that 'cause I get pissed off when someone doesn't seem to understand what is obvious to me...

Just pointing out that I never said "training".

1. I would take that as an insult if it werent true (we're all stupid).
2. Umm, ok?
3. Access to it, yes. Ability to do it, less than likely for most people.
4. I just don't want to take the time to be defensive.
5. It will give you more of a reason to stay away from them.

Umm, then you should realize that the world does not revolve around you, I guess.

He's just posting a relpy, I don't think that means he's self centered...

Anyway, enough of this crap.  Training/Practicing/Mastu... ehm...  against AI is never good training, period.  There's a certain limit that it has.  As I've said, the only thing you can train against AI is technique, or skill with handling the character.  But 99% of all battles after the point of mastering technique is mind games and strategy.  Those you cannot improve with AI.
Darkwasabi is right. 'nuff said. I'm pretty sure that me arguing with you won't solve anything. Though I just want ot point out one thing:

5. It will give you more of a reason to stay away from them.

That's admitting that you're practically forced to be defensive, by the way.
Quote:

Ok, I see defensive as using defense. Hopping out of the way from attacks in order to not get launched off of the screen is just getting out of the way. So getting out of the way isn't necessarily defensive. Running from them doesn't have to be used as defensive, either. It doesn't matter how much I argue though, I didn't get how to do some crap and now am in an argument. I give up, I'm gonna go watch speed runs and play Morrowind now.

Hurray for not using the same definitions for the same words and expecting to have anything resembling a decent argument!  Hitaro, Misslewaster, chill out, your points have been made.  There is no last word.

1) You can only learn so much against the computer, and as far as learning the basics, it works fine.

2) You can't advance your technique beyond a certain point with the AI, and uphill matches aren't a valid replacement.

We all agreed?  No more argument, hurray!
