Yeah, I could just see someone picking Purin and kicking everyones ass and embarassing us all. Grin

me evidently, as my best character has pretty much always been puff  Grin

she's quite good in melee imo.  air combos can be sick.
Everybody loves Hypnotoad!
Now kicking everyone's ass with Pichu would be embarassing.

BTW, I'm in.  The first SDA SSB tournament...Cool!
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

All of the items range from "insanely too usefull", like the Superstar, to "just in the way", like the Homerun Bat. None of the items take "skill", if you may, to chose wich one to use and to use them, it all depends on who is the fastest at getting a certain item. Heck; if items were aloud in serious matches, Mewtwo wouldn't be N.24 in the tier list (here's a hint; there're 25 characters in the game).

As for stages, some of them have areas that are WAY too advantageous, like Sanctuary (as I like to call it), the lower area of Hyrule Temple, where as long as you can recover well, you will NOT DIE unless you have around 300% damage, some of them are way too cramped like Flat Zone (there aren't even any freakin' walls!), and the moving ones force players to focus too much on the field.

I really disagree about the items. Some of them could certainly be cheap, like if a heart container or star drops right in your opponent's lap, but most of them add a lot more variety to matches, IMO. To me, SSB wouldn't be SSB without star rods, beam swords, and bob-ombs. I'll agree about Flat Zone being a terrible stage though... it's the only one I keep disabled from the random select.

SSBB tourney? Count me in! (in 7 months :'()

I like Flat Zone... maybe I wouldn't like it if it were the only stage, but it's a nice change when it comes up. It'd be no fun if the stages were so bland that none of them affected the players' strategies.

And I love items. All of them. Sure, sometimes they affect the outcome of a match (not as often as a lot of tournament purists would have you believe), but they aren't going to consistently help the same player over multiple matches. I'm not so crazy about who wins and loses each match that I can't stand a bit of randomness in the mix.

I pick random characters, too. It's fun to get someone like Bowser and humiliate people who think he's useless.
He's back!
What I generally meant by shield dodges was holding L or R and tapping left or right. I would destroy a character like Bowser using that.  My favourite was Young Link because he had a good overall balance of speed, power and trajectory moves. All the characters were too simalar in SSBM and SSB-64 e.g Ganondorf was basically Falcon. I certainly hope there is more variety this time.

Ahem...everyone, if I could have your attention please. I would like to take this moment to announce the obvious tournament that will happen between us all in the SSBB online feature. (come on admit it, you all wanna do this...or most of you anyway). I for one will now pick up SSBM again and begin training. So perpare yourselves...the day is comming. (probably sometime next year).

This could get ugly.

That would be fricking nice. A SDA tournament xD. But seriously, though, you might have some difficulties with me around  8)

Are they actual tourament matches?, since many of they fights are amaturist and make the same consistent mistakes e.g. hanging at the ledge when the oponent is doing a recovery jump and hardly any use of shield dodges. I reccon I could beat them, but I couldn't say for definite.

No offense... but you clearly don't know much about SSMB tactics, and you're vastly overestimating yourself if you "reccon" you could beat the players in those videos.

Rolling (what you call "shield dodging") tends to leave you vulnerable, especially with characters that have a slow roll. I'm not all that good at the game myself (haven't played that many people, never learned a lot of advanced moves like wavedashing), but I could destroy someone who thinks rolling around Bowser is a good idea. Among other things, his up+b is a near instant and decently powerful omnidirectional attack, great for countering people who think Bowser is slow and clumsy and try to fight close in. And if you try to roll when I'm not recovering from an attack, it'd just give me time to have a powerful attack waiting for you when you get out of it...

Never did I say at any point I could destroy them, only I would have a realistic chance. You probally didn't read my first post either. I don't use usual tactics that peple would expect, which is why again you should refer to my first post. It would certainly be interesting to see what you mean by 'omnidirectional ' attacks during a serious match. We can't judge each other till we've seen or played each other. I would be interested if you posted a video of yourself playing SSBM against level 9's with no items and on a stationary stage.

What does "When your playing against other people or trying to beat the game in the fastest time then yes it is serious" have to do with anything I said? Other than highlighting yet again that you can't spell.

No, you don't use tactics that you think people will expect. There's a difference between what you think they'll expect and what they may actually expect.

By "omnidirectional" I mean "in all directions". It's not a hard word....
While my skill level is likely too low to be competent in any kind of tournament, I would be honored to compete against some of the great players here.  We could also record the matches, and have some epic battles like that link given.

I think my biggest problem is that I never play against real people.  I know no one who plays.  While I can beat level 9s no problem, that doesn't say much.  Online play will help out in this area.

1.To say that I think I can beat them isn't an overcomfident attidude. You must think of me like super ing.

2. You 'use' that 'word' as if its the 'ultimate' attack when its 'not'. If anything Roy's charging sword attack is the 'ultimate' attack.

The only reason it isn't overcomfident is that "overcomfident" is not a word.

1. Putting quotation marks around a word can be used to refer to that word as the word itself - for example, an apple is red, but "apple" has five letters. They're not to be used randomly, unless you want to flaunt your ignorance.

2. "omni" does not mean "ultimate", fool. "omnidirectional" most certainly does not. If you're going to argue with someone, perhaps you should learn the language being used before you try?

3. Roy's charging sword attack sucks.

You can't have read what I've said. I thought the terms 'use' and the phrase "as if", which is a metaphor would have helped you. Arguing as if you're a superior being is not the best attitude.

Agree, but its powerful when it hits.

But if it helps you beat your opponents more easiliy and helps you stay alive longer than without weapons, why wouldn't it do the same for your oppoenent?  Doesn't the use of and counterattack against items require some sort of skill?  I'll agree some items are broken and are simply a matter of being lucky enough to get one to fall near you (invisible thingy), but to ban all items would require individual arguments for each item.  [/rant]

So close to being sold on a wii.  Including Wario and Snake is going to make the decision so much harder.  Now if SSBB has Crono...

I'll agree with that to a certain extent, but what I said includes each type of character whether it's human or CPU players, I never said it could just benefit the human players assuming you would recognize the fact that the items do help everybody, if you wanted to see a fun and exciting match, then use all the weapons you want, but if you're going for a record by doing a run, you should try to make as challenging a run as you possibly can to be regarded as an excellent SSBM player. IOW, everybody can win with the aid of weapons by their side, there are not many people who can win with just pure skill and hand-to-hand combat techniques alone, that takes a lot of mastery of the game. Just responding to your point by trying to make mine seem clear to you, Rael.

I can guarantee you that all skilled Smash Bros players who play at tournaments are not going to let you stand still for 5 seconds to charge up an attack that they could negate by shielding. If you use the charge B attack in a serious fight then you'll just get hit from behind while charging.

Ditto, although I am leagues away from being a top tier player.  Playing as 1 character all the time gets boring.

My regulars include Link, Fox, Pika, Dr. Mario, DK, and Cpt. Falcon.

I've actually just taped myself playing SSBM. I played bowswer on level 9 on Termina with no items. Although for my own safety I won't upload it just yet  :-/

I would be willing to upload it if Strangeness and others were willing to upload footage on themselves playing  Cheesy

AKA, this is in no means meant as an insult or a slight, but you're not doing yourself any favors by boasting of, or even mentioning your exploits against the AI.  There is quite literally a universe of differences between playing the computer and playing tournament-hardened players.  Competitive play becomes a world of priority, safe vs. unsafe, intensly abbreviated techniques that defines specific character play.

Ever heard of Bowser's SHFFLC'd FA?  How about the wave-dash?  Dashdancing?  Crouch cancels?  Shield grabbing?  If any one of those last four didn't make sense to you, you're not in reach of beating a tournament player.  Even if you do know what they are, but don't know how to use them or counter them, you're not ready to beat a tournament player.  This isn't trying to put you down, it's simple fact.  You can't beat someone who uses techniques that are more advanced than yours without knowing how to stop them.  That's just the way it works.

DSS, I agree, Flat World isn't that bad.  I actually enjoy every stage in Melee, though admittedly I like some more than the others.  The reason why tournaments use no items and always play on Final Destination is that in a tournament environment, you "need" to have a static environment with no random factors outside of your own skill.  That's why the tournaments are all one on one, as well.  Now, I disagree with the sentiment, because it goes against Smash Bros.'s very concept of random chaos, but I don't make the tournament rules.

If we ran an SDA tournament, I'd rather prefer we had it in the way Smash was meant to be played.  All items on, all stages on, four players at once, teamed or unteamed, doesn't matter, let the chaos fall where it may.  Play double elimination, just so that the chances are that dumb luck won't kick your ass twice in a row.

On one hand, I'm looking forward to online smash.  Finally, a way to play humans without having to play the same people over and over again.  At the same time, I'm kinda apprehensive about it.  "Oh boy, I get to venture into the vast world of no items, Final Destinations, and high-tier thumping competitive players.  Joy."  We'll see how it goes.  If there's some sort of ranking system involved, much of my complaints go away.
King of hearts
I would, but I'm rusty.  I can't even shffl properly anymore(not that I fully mastered that either).  I would be much better if I actually had someone to play against...  Oh well, it's going to be a long time before it comes out anyway.

It'll be out in 2007.  More likely than not fist half 2007, though I'll put my money on Q2 more than Q1, personally.

This is one of the reasons why I shouldn't upload it. I know it isn't an achivement to beat the computer on level 9. It just gives an example of my general playing style. Uploading would probally just make things worse. Like I said before no one can be judged until they've been seen against other players.
