Read the first post of the voting thread for more info, including suggestion for emulator to use, how to time, etc. Ask if you have any questions. I am also linking the arcade tourney to give you an idea of how stuff works.

Also note that we are playing week 1 this week from midnight EST between Sun/Mon, to next week at the same time. We are also voting for week 2 simultaneously. You can check out the week 2 games when you want to take a little break.

The premise of Konami's Yume Penguin Monogatari is too awesome to believe. For corroboration, I will link this youtube and this gamefaqs review and this Gunbird 2 ending. This is a pretty simple game and everyone knows how to play for time, so I'm sure you can figure it out easily. Oh yeah! If you want it in English, you can use this patch. Even more awesome since you can actually understand the words. Several people have tried the prepatched English rom already. Don't do that unless you like to take it in the ass hard. Patch it yourself, trust me.

We will be playing the first loop only! This means when you get the ending, you're done. Also, you need to get the good ending, since getting the bad ending is like losing. Check the FAQ linked below if you're confused.

Time just like SDA: from first control of character (in this case, at the start of the tutorial) to loss of control (final hit). You don't even have to beat the game if you don't want. Just post a time after the stage (so stage 4 means you just beat stage 4). If you are unsure what counts as a stage, follow this FAQ. Format like SDA like:

0:20:55 - Radix - Stage 4

Look at how far I've updated, and to be courteous, if you make another new score since my last update, please edit your post to cross out the outdated new score. That way I don't have to update your score more than once per update. Also, please quote the previous score you beat. That way, I know which old score to remove and you won't appear on the scoreboard twice.

Ristar is a crazy underappreciated game by Sega. If it was by Nintendo or Treasure, it would probably be considered by many to be the greatest platformer ever, or something to that effect. It's about a star with stretchy arms who gets wished upon, so it's his job to go save some faroff galaxy. Pretty awesome if you ask me. Pretty dank if you ask Megatherium. Of course, dank is awesome.

Play on Normal difficulty (the default) and use only one continue. Keep in mind, continues is not the same thing as lives.

Timing is the same as always. Remember, you don't need to beat the game to post a time. New simplified posting rules! Please try to follow them.

If you are posting your first time for this game, please indicate this. No more quoting is necessary. I will just assume you had a previous time and look for it, unless you mark your time as NEW somehow.

1:01:01 - Radix - Stage 5-2 NEW

The part I would like people to try to follow is the crossing out. Look at when I have last updated, say Enhasa page 8. Let's say you post a time on page 9. Then you post a newer time on page 10. Don't need to quote or anything, all you should do is go back and edit your post from page 9 to strike it out. This way, I don't update unnecessarily. Thanks a bunch!

Pocky & Rocky is one of the best shooters of the entire 16-bit generation. Also the most awesome on the SNES. Like Ninja Warriors for SNES, it's a Natsume developed game of a Taito license: in this case, Kiki Kaikai. It's about a shrine maiden named Pocky who is a bazillion times more awesome than Reimu, who fights evil and actually I have no idea what this game is about. Also it stars a tanuki (tanukis are scientifically proven to be awesome) named Rocky.

If you love this game and want to play sequels, beware: Pocky and Rocky with Becky (by Altron) is eh (and so is Becky), and Heavenly Guardian (by Starfish) sucks so bad that Taito said WTF we're not allowing you to crap all over our franchise and withdrew support. Which is all for the better if you ask me. But I'm a moron who plays lots of games, even if I suspect they will be bad, so I still bought this POS, doh!

Anyway we get a top-down game for once. Play with defaults and do the electric slide. Read the Ristar post for posting rules. It goes something like this. Please include which character you use!

In a tourney full of awesome games, perhaps the most awesome is Gunners Heaven, developed by Media Vision and published by Sony. It's easy, it's fun, it's a run 'n gun. It's like Gunstar Heroes and Metal Slug had a baby that resembles its mother. It's fast-paced and you have cool movement methods like dashing/sliding and GRAPPLE HOOK. If you don't vote for love Gunners Heaven, you deserve to go to Gunners Hell. (That's a nasty place where people play pachinko games and turn-based RPGs all day, and nobody wants to end up there.)

I don't remember what this game is even about at all, so I'm making up a plot. One day these bad guys are like "hoho we are so awesome" and the good guys are like "no way dudes, we are." And then you fight through a set of awesome stages to prove who is the more awesome. Well finally the good guys beat the TRUE LAST BOSS and demonstrate their superior awesomeness once and for all. Except we all know the good guys are way lame and actually the bad guys are way more awesome even though they lost. (It's like a secret twist ending.)

Sequels? Media Vision is best known by a lot for the Wild Arms series. Let's compare and contrast the covers for Gunners Heaven and Wild Arms 1. Apparently sick of clones, Axel and Ruka themselves appeared in WA2.

I'm pretty sure they're the same speed, so you can use either Gunners Heaven (jp) or Rapid Reload (eu) if you want English text. If you're having trouble finding the iso, google for megaupload and AV4IV2YO whoops my cat just walked on my keyboard, I dunno what that was. BTW this upload is "by BonusJZ" and he seems like the kind of guy who is really vain and would want you to type that in somewhere.

Let's play with full defaults! Once again, list your character please. This time, it even matters for speedrunning who you use!

I did the first stage of Yume in 1:12.  This isn't perfect by any means.  I just wanted to post a video to get the competition started.
boss
A high 1:07 on stage1. I usually get 1:08-09 but I got lucky and got the final shape up even before the ladder.

PS. Thanks for the shortcut vgmr. Too bad there are invisible walls in this game, otherwise there would be a sweet cut at the bottom of the waterfall.
Never give up!

I was just about to warn people regarding translations.  DO NOT get the ROM that's translated by Kalevan - get the Japanese one and patch it yourself.

Why?

I've tried to play the already-translated one and I swear it's on second loop AND had its difficulty go way up.  The time limits were much shorter (I think), but the real kicker was that getting hit by just ONE food item sent your weight right back to maximum NO MATTER WHERE IT WAS.  When I switched to the Japanese ROM I made it all the way to stage 3 on the first try before running out of time against its boss.  (Too bad I didn't time this playthrough.)

Then again, maybe this is a similar situation to the strange anti-piracy measures of a lot of early Konami games.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
AquaTiger (or do you want me to say Frosty), that's good advice, I never get prepatched roms.

If you read the linked translation page, the original patch makes the game way insane because of Konami anti-piracy like you said. So they released an updated patch that fixes that. Both are included in the download. Apply the wrong one at your own expense!
boss
Btw does the bad ending count or are you required to get the good one?
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Good ending, since bad is just getting bashed on the final boss IIRC. Thanks, I'll update the info post.

BTW everyone in this thread so far has a flying creature as avatar, clearly a litmus test for awesome people. This is even future-proof as long as Mike posts next at least.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
I will post next because I want someone to create a penguin belly flop avatar for me, it's only the best move in the game.
boss
Bad ending is still killing the boss as usual, while getting pwnd (finishing without the required fat level or whatever that is). That would like SUPER speed up the last level as you could just fire away at him at point blank.

No. The boot is.
Cigar Man
Very nice stage one, groobo.  That's basically what I wanted to do, but I didn't have it as polished as you.

The cake level might have some good shortcuts.
boss
Fuck the caek level, just get the hat and fly all the way up to the end.

The whole rest of the game, if you are too fat you lose, so I wouldn't make the final boss any different.

How's this?
... That penguin is a tubby fat fuck. He won't stay thin enough for me to complete a run of the first level, let alone the whole game =[

0:17:13 - FrostyTheDragon - Stage 6

While my estimates are that at least a couple of minutes can be shaved off that time, I at least can say I managed a full clear of the game.

And if anyone knows ANYTHING about me, if I can accomplish a 1CC on a mixed platforming/shmup game, ANYONE ON THIS FORUM can.

I will probably be returning to this game and seeing if I can get sub-16.  And to get an actual video of this to prove my point above.

Notes:
-Every stage past stage 3 was basically passed by the skin of my teeth - by weight goals in all cases and by time goal in stage 5.
-This game has an awful lot of room for error in general.  Maybe it has to do with the fact that there's no real life meter to speak of.
-I was not concerned at all with play quality in this first one - I was just concerned about getting through the damn game.  I rate mine as 'mediocre' here - though the worst of it was generally in the shmup stages actually.  My platformer ability in this playthrough is probably around 'fair'.

Well, so far:

0:01:23 - Tharandir - Stage 1

Finally had a good run of the first level, then I screwed up right near the end... BTW, am I the only one who thinks grabbing onto ladders from a jump is harder than it should be in this game? o_O

And yeah, I signed up here just for this contest. I thought I already had an account here, but apparently not...
Cigar Man
I did Yume's stage three in 0:00:55.  Once again, this run isn't perfect, but it's a start.

Ok I lied, here you go:

BTW I know I've linked it a dozen times, but this Gunbird 2 ending perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this game.

Edit: Mike also sympathizes with Penta being fat and pulls off belly flops in real life on a daily basis.
